If How to Fish opens to a black or gray screen—or Steam says it is still running—first let Steam finish updating, then restart Steam and your PC. Next, verify the game files, update Windows and your graphics driver, and close nonessential apps. These are general Steam troubleshooting steps, not confirmed cures for this specific game. Check the published requirements before assuming you need new hardware.
Check the game’s setup and update status first
How to Fish is a Windows PC game on Steam, released August 20, 2026. Its Steam page describes it as a one-to-four-player physics-based fishing simulator. The developer continued to publish updates through September 29, 2026, including patch 1.1.3. An earlier announcement for patch 1.0.11 said it focused mainly on stability and platform support and asked players to restart Steam to receive the update; the announcements do not identify a particular patch as a black-screen fix. - Wait for any Steam download or update to finish.
- Exit and reopen Steam, then restart your PC.
- Start the game again and note whether the screen, error, or Steam status changes.
Change one thing at a time and retest. That makes it easier to identify which step, if any, affects the problem.
Compare your PC with the minimum requirements
The game’s published minimum requirements are:
- 64-bit processor and operating system
- Windows 10 or newer
- Intel Core i5-5257U, AMD Ryzen 3 1200, or equivalent processor
- 8 GB RAM
- GeForce GTX 1050, AMD RX 460, or equivalent graphics hardware
- Broadband internet
- 1 GB available storage
The store page does not provide a detailed recommended configuration beyond a 64-bit processor and operating system. Steam cautions that a PC at or near minimum requirements can still experience launch or performance problems. Compare your system with the published requirements; do not assume an upgrade is necessary unless you identify a specific shortfall or hardware fault.

Try the standard Steam launch checks
Steam recommends several general checks for games that do not launch. They can help rule out common file, driver, or software issues, but they are not developer-confirmed fixes for How to Fish. Steam’s guidance is available in its launch troubleshooting article.
Verify the installed game files
In Steam, open your Library, right-click How to Fish, choose Properties, then Installed Files and Verify integrity of game files. Let the check complete before starting the game again. Steam notes that corrupted or incomplete files can prevent a game from running.

Update Windows and your graphics driver
Install available Windows updates and the appropriate graphics driver for your PC, then restart Windows and retry the game. If the issue began immediately after an update, note that timing for your report.

Temporarily exit nonessential programs that might interfere with Steam or the game, then test again. Do not permanently remove security software as a troubleshooting shortcut.

Use the fix that matches the Steam message
Steam says the game is already running
This message can appear after a silent crash or an unsuccessful launch that left the game process open. Open Task Manager, look for a How to Fish process, and end that process if it is still present. Then try launching the game again. Steam’s explanation is in its guidance for games stuck as running.
Steam reports a missing executable
Security software can mistakenly quarantine a game file. Check its quarantine and verify the game files in Steam. Restore a quarantined file only if the security product and your trusted Steam installation indicate it is a false positive. The game opens to black or gray, with no specific error
Follow the update, restart, file verification, driver, and nonessential-app checks above. A game-specific community discussion titled “Black Screen When Starting” includes reports of a black screen, gray screen, and inability to launch through Steam. One player in the game-specific discussion reported that enabling Run this program as administrator for the executable helped; another said it did not. Other replies describe mixed outcomes. This is an anecdotal, reversible test, not a required setting or a developer-confirmed fix.

- In Steam, open the game’s Properties and use Installed Files to browse to its installation folder.
- Right-click the game executable, choose Properties, then open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator, apply the change, and try launching the game.
- If it makes no difference or causes another issue, return to the same tab and clear the checkbox.
What to include when you ask for help
A useful report lets other players or support distinguish a display problem from a stuck process or missing file. Include:
- The exact symptom: black screen, gray screen, no window, audio without an image, or the full Steam error.
- Whether the game process remains open and whether Steam says it is running.
- Your Windows version, CPU, graphics card, and installed RAM.
- The current game version, or confirmation that Steam finished updating.
- Whether the problem started after a particular update and whether it happens on every launch.
- Each troubleshooting step you tried and what changed afterward.
- A screenshot when it helps show the error or screen. For a missing-executable support ticket, attach an uncropped screenshot and a System Report as Steam requests.
