Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Valheim servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
Fix high ping on a Valheim dedicated server by first finding out whether the delay affects one player or everyone. One affected player usually points to that player’s Wi-Fi, uploads, VPN, proxy, or ISP route. Delay affecting the whole group more often points to the server’s host, uplink, backend, firewall, NAT, or shared route. Confirm that distinction, identify whether the server uses Steam or Crossplay, then verify the required UDP access from outside the host’s network. Do not treat visual stutter as proof of high ping, and do not expect a particular router, cable, or hosting change to guarantee a specific millisecond reduction.
Start by separating network ping from game stutter
“Lag” in Valheim can describe two different problems. Network latency is the time data takes to travel between a player and the server. Simulation or rendering stutter is a delay in processing or displaying the game, even when the network path is healthy. A crowded base, many active entities, a heavily modded world, or a struggling computer can feel like high ping without changing the measured network latency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRecord what players actually observe before changing settings:
- Does the delay affect one player, several players, or everyone at the same time?
- Is it constant, or does it arrive in bursts during uploads, combat, building, or world saves?
- Do characters snap back, take damage late, or fail to interact, indicating network delay?
- Do frames pause while voice chat and other players remain responsive, indicating local rendering or simulation stutter?
- Does the problem disappear when the affected player changes networks?
Valheim’s official documentation does not establish a universal “high ping” threshold, and no authoritative figure guarantees a fixed number of milliseconds saved by forwarding a port, replacing a cable, changing backends, or moving hosts. Use before-and-after measurements from the actual players instead.

Use the one-player versus everyone diagnostic
| Observed scope | Most useful first suspects | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Only one player is delayed | Congested Wi-Fi, local uploads or downloads, VPN or proxy, device load, or that ISP’s route | Test Ethernet or another network, stop background traffic, and compare with the VPN disconnected |
| Everyone is delayed together | Server host load, home uplink saturation, server geography, router or firewall rules, backend configuration, or a shared upstream route | Check the server machine, uplink usage, backend, ports, and firewall from an external connection |
| Players outside the host’s network cannot join, while local players can | NAT, missing forwarding, host firewall, router firewall, ISP filtering, or a managed network blocking traffic | Test from a different Internet connection and verify the backend-specific network requirements |
| Only during heavy building or crowded areas | Simulation or rendering workload rather than Internet latency | Compare network symptoms with frame-time or server-performance symptoms before changing network settings |
This is a practical diagnostic heuristic, not a published Valheim rule. A shared ISP problem can affect a subset of players, and an individual device can appear to lag during a server-wide event, so confirm the pattern with more than one test.
Step 1: Measure the symptom before changing configuration
Record a repeatable time and event
Ask each player to note the time, location, and activity when the delay occurs. A short log can show whether the issue starts when someone begins a cloud backup, streams video, uploads a large file, enters a busy base, or connects through a particular network. Correlate reports from at least two players rather than relying on one person’s impression.
Check the route with ordinary network tools
From an affected computer, use the operating system’s normal ping and route-tracing utility to compare the server address with another stable Internet destination. Windows commonly provides tracert; macOS and Linux commonly provide traceroute. These tools do not reproduce Valheim’s complete traffic path, and some routers deprioritize or block diagnostic probes, so treat the output as evidence about the route, not as a precise in-game latency measurement.
Run tests while the game is healthy and while the problem is occurring. Look for a change that coincides with the event: rising delay, packet loss, or a route that changes to a distant provider. A route trace that looks normal does not prove that game traffic is healthy, and asterisks in a trace do not automatically prove packet loss; many network devices simply decline to answer those probes.
Keep local and remote tests separate
A connection from the same LAN as the server proves only that local traffic can reach the machine. It does not prove that Internet clients can traverse the router’s NAT, firewall, or ISP path. Always include a test by a player outside the host’s LAN using the normal server address.
Step 2: Eliminate a single player’s local bottleneck
Compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi
For the affected player, test a wired Ethernet connection if practical. If Ethernet is unavailable, move closer to the access point, use a less congested band, and avoid testing through a mesh node with a weak backhaul. Pause large downloads, cloud synchronization, video uploads, and other traffic on the player’s device and household network. A speed test showing high throughput does not rule out queueing delay when an upload is saturated.

Temporarily remove VPN and proxy variables
Disconnect a VPN or proxy for a controlled test, then reconnect it only if the comparison is clear. A VPN can add a distant gateway or a congested tunnel even when the player’s local connection is fast. Corporate, school, hotel, and other managed networks can also filter game traffic or force it through a proxy.

Try a second access network
Use a phone hotspot or another trusted connection briefly, observing data limits and local policies. If the problem disappears on the second network, the original Wi-Fi, router, ISP route, or managed network becomes the leading suspect. If the delay follows the player across networks while others remain unaffected, inspect the game device, background software, and local system load.
Distinguish device performance from latency
Watch whether the game freezes visually while voice chat and the movement of other players continue normally. That pattern suggests rendering or simulation work on the device rather than a network round trip. Lowering graphics settings, closing intensive applications, or checking system thermals may help that class of problem, but those actions will not repair a blocked UDP path.
Step 3: Identify the server backend
Inspect the dedicated-server launch script or service definition for the backend argument. A Steam-backend server does not have the same inbound-router requirement as a server launched with Crossplay.
Recommended Free Tools
| Backend | Inbound router forwarding | Connection path | What to measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam backend | Required for Internet reachability; the launch port must match the router rule | Direct Internet path through the host’s router and firewall | Latency and packet loss from each real player, plus external reachability |
Crossplay (-crossplay) |
Iron Gate says router port forwarding is not required | Relay networking rather than a directly forwarded inbound connection | Latency to the relay path for the affected players and any relay congestion |
Crossplay can remove a reachability problem caused by carrier-grade NAT, a restrictive router, or an ISP that does not provide usable inbound access. It is not automatically a speed upgrade: relay geography and congestion determine the path. Test the players who actually experience the delay before deciding that Crossplay is faster or slower for your group.
Platform compatibility and local behavior also matter. Compare the platforms your group uses, whether local or LAN connections are important, and the measured route for those players. Choose the backend that solves the group’s connectivity constraints, not one that sounds faster in the abstract.
Step 4: Configure the Steam backend’s port pair correctly
Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide states that Valheim uses the configured port and that port plus one; its defaults are UDP 2456 and 2457. If you set another base value with -port, forward that value and the next port instead.
- Open the dedicated-server launch script or service configuration and identify the numeric value after
-port. Record the exact base port. - In the router’s port-forwarding page, create rules for UDP traffic to the base port and the immediately following port.
- Set the destination address to the local IP address of the machine running the Valheim server. Reserve that address in the router or configure a reliable static address so the rule does not follow the wrong device after a reboot.
- Save the router configuration and confirm that the rule is enabled. A rule aimed at an old DHCP address will appear correct but send traffic to another device.
- Allow the same UDP traffic through the server computer’s operating-system firewall. If the server runs on a VPS or other hosted system, also allow it in the provider’s security group or network firewall.
- Restart the server if your configuration requires it, then have a player on a different Internet connection join using the normal server address.
Do not infer that a successful local join validates this setup. The router may support hairpin or loopback behavior for local clients while external clients remain blocked, or the opposite may occur. The external test is the meaningful check.

Step 5: Understand Crossplay’s relay trade-off
Launch the server with the Crossplay option documented by Iron Gate, -crossplay, when the group needs relay connectivity or cannot accept inbound forwarding. Because the relay handles reachability, you do not create the Steam-backend forwarding rules solely for Crossplay.
Measure the result with players in their normal locations. A relay may place traffic closer to some players and farther from others. Congestion can vary by time and region, so capture more than one session if the first comparison is inconclusive. If Crossplay fixes timeouts but produces a longer route for one player, decide whether reliable access or the measured latency is the group’s priority, then investigate hosting geography if necessary.
Step 6: Check every firewall and NAT layer
Port forwarding is only one part of the path. Check each layer independently:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Server operating-system firewall: permit the required UDP ports for the dedicated-server process or the corresponding inbound rules.
- Router firewall: confirm that the forwarding rule is enabled and that no separate WAN-blocking policy overrides it.
- Double NAT: identify whether an ISP gateway sits in front of your own router. Forward through both devices, place the downstream router in the appropriate bridge or passthrough arrangement, or use Crossplay if inbound access cannot be provided.
- Carrier-grade NAT: an ISP may share one public address among customers, preventing ordinary inbound forwarding. Ask the ISP whether a publicly reachable address or another supported option is available; otherwise test Crossplay or move the server.
- Cloud or VPS security group: the provider’s network policy must permit the same UDP traffic even when the guest operating system is configured correctly.
- Managed upstream network: school, university, business, hotel, and proxy networks can block ports required for Steam operation. Valve’s support documentation explicitly warns about these environments.
Do not open every port listed in a generic gaming guide without a reason. For a vanilla Steam-backend Valheim server, begin with the documented Valheim pair. Steam support lists additional UDP ranges used for Steam traffic, including remote ports 27000–27250, but those ranges do not replace the Valheim server’s configured-port requirement. Apply only rules your network administrator or the relevant service documentation requires.
Step 7: Test from outside the host LAN
Use a real remote player
Ask a friend on another ISP, a mobile connection, or a different household to connect at a scheduled time. Record whether the server appears, whether the connection times out, and whether play is delayed after joining. This test exercises the complete Internet path, unlike a local loopback test.
Change one variable at a time
For a useful comparison, keep the world, server machine, and player location constant while changing only one factor: Steam versus Crossplay, VPN connected versus disconnected, Wi-Fi versus Ethernet, or current router versus another network. Record the outcome rather than relying on memory. A change that fixes joining but not in-game latency solved reachability, not necessarily the route-quality problem.
Interpret partial success carefully
- If remote clients cannot join but local clients can, continue with NAT, forwarding, firewall, and managed-network checks.
- If remote clients join but every player experiences delay, inspect the host uplink, server workload, geography, and shared route.
- If only one remote client is delayed, return to that player’s network and ISP-path tests.
- If Crossplay joins reliably but latency varies by player, compare relay geography and consider a different server location.
Step 8: Check hosting geography and uplink capacity
Choose a location near the player majority
Physical distance and the number of network networks between players and the server influence latency. If most players are in one region and the server is at the opposite side of a continent or across an ocean, compare a location closer to that majority. This is a service decision, not a guaranteed reduction: peering, congestion, and the route chosen by each ISP still matter.

Watch the home uplink, not just download speed
A home-hosted server shares the Internet connection with every device in the house. A saturated upload can queue game packets and create large bursts of delay while an ordinary speed test still reports an acceptable download rate. Check router traffic graphs during an incident, stop nonessential uploads, and retest. If the uplink repeatedly saturates, a managed host or a different connection may be more dependable than repeatedly changing in-game settings.
Check the server machine and workload
Confirm that the server process is not competing with backups, media transcoding, antivirus scans, or other sustained workloads. If players report visual or simulation pauses only in dense areas, treat that as a performance investigation alongside, not instead of, network testing. A stronger machine can reduce simulation stalls but cannot repair an unreachable UDP port.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Moving the server can solve a structural problem, but it should follow measurement. Compare the options on the factors that affect your group:
| Factor | Home or self-hosted server | Managed Valheim host |
|---|---|---|
| Geographic region | Fixed to the host’s home or current data-center location | May offer several regions; verify the actual cities or regions before buying |
| Uplink quality | Shares the household or existing server connection | Usually uses a data-center uplink, but capacity and contention vary by provider |
| NAT and firewall control | You control the router, firewall, and forwarding, unless the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT | The provider controls edge networking; confirm which ports and protections are included |
| Maintenance | You handle updates, restarts, logs, and recovery | The provider may offer a control panel and scheduled maintenance; check the exact scope |
| Backups | You must create and test your own world backups | Backup frequency, retention, restore process, and extra fees differ by provider |
| Version and mod support | Full control, with responsibility for compatibility | Verify Valheim version timing, mod support, file access, and rollback options |
| Total monthly cost | Existing hardware and Internet may make incremental cost low, but electricity and upgrades still count | Recurring price varies by region, memory, player capacity, backups, and contract terms |
A managed host is most compelling when ISP NAT, a poor home uplink, server geography, or maintenance burden is the root cause. Compare measured latency from your players and confirm region coverage, uptime terms, backups, version support, and total recurring cost before migrating.
Handle mods as a separate network variable
Do not assume a mod-related port requirement applies to vanilla Valheim. Community deployment documentation notes that some mods using RPC may require an additional port, such as the game port plus two. That is not a standard vanilla Valheim requirement.
- Reproduce the problem with the same world and server configuration but without the suspected mod, if the world and mod author’s instructions make that safe.
- Read the specific mod’s documentation for its RPC or service ports and whether those ports use UDP, TCP, or both.
- Open only the documented additional traffic in the host firewall, router, and any cloud security group.
- Retest from outside the host LAN and confirm that every player is using the same compatible mod and version.
If removing the mod eliminates the symptom, report the exact version, server log behavior, and player pattern to its maintainer. Do not add arbitrary forwarding rules based on another mod’s instructions.
Troubleshoot by symptom
Everyone experiences regular delay spikes
- Check whether the host’s upload is saturated by backups, streaming, or another household device.
- Inspect server CPU, memory, disk activity, and simulation behavior during the spike.
- Compare an external player’s route at a quiet time and during the incident.
- Test a server location nearer the player majority if geography or peering is consistently poor.
Only one player rubber-bands
- Move that player from congested Wi-Fi to Ethernet or a different access point.
- Stop uploads and disconnect VPN or proxy services for a controlled comparison.
- Test another ISP or mobile connection.
- If the second network fixes it, provide the original ISP or network administrator with the time, destination, and route evidence rather than changing the server.
The server works locally but remote players time out
- Confirm whether the server is using Steam or Crossplay.
- For Steam, match
-portto the router’s UDP base-and-next-port rules and the server machine’s current LAN address. - Check the host firewall, router firewall, double NAT, carrier-grade NAT, and cloud security group.
- Retest from outside the LAN; never use only the host’s local address as proof of Internet reachability.
Crossplay connects but feels slower
- Measure the affected players rather than assuming the relay is closer or farther.
- Check whether the delay affects everyone or only a player whose relay route is poor.
- Compare a properly configured Steam backend when inbound forwarding is genuinely available.
- If the relay is reliable but consistently distant, evaluate a server location nearer the group.
Players report “lag” only in busy bases
- Compare network symptoms with frame-time and simulation pauses.
- Check server and client resource use during the event.
- Test whether the same player experiences the issue on another server or world.
- Investigate mods and entity density before changing router settings.
A repeatable maintenance checklist
- Keep a record of the server’s backend,
-portvalue, router destination address, and firewall rules. - Reserve the server machine’s LAN address so forwarding does not break after DHCP renewal.
- Test one external connection after router, firewall, backend, or host changes.
- Monitor household or server uplink use during the hours when players normally connect.
- Maintain current world backups and verify that a restore works before a failure occurs.
- Document mod versions and any non-vanilla ports with the mod’s own instructions.
- When changing hosts, compare the same players, time window, world activity, and backend so the result is meaningful.
The reliable order is scope, measurement, backend, required ports, every firewall and NAT layer, external testing, then geography or hosting. That sequence prevents a player’s Wi-Fi problem from being misdiagnosed as a server fault and prevents a server-wide route problem from being hidden by a successful local connection.
