An HDMI “no signal” message usually comes from one break in the path between the mini PC and the display. Power both devices, choose the monitor’s HDMI input, reseat the cable, remove docks or adapters, and test a different cable and display. If Windows is already running, Windows+P and Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B can restore the picture. If there is no image even before Windows starts, investigate the connector type, GPU output, BIOS/UEFI and firmware instead.
First determine when the signal disappears
The timing of the failure determines which fixes are relevant. A mini PC can show its manufacturer logo or BIOS screen and then lose the picture when Windows loads, or it can fail to display anything at all.
No picture from power-on
If the monitor never shows a logo, firmware screen or boot menu, Windows settings and Windows drivers are not yet involved. Concentrate on power, input selection, the cable, the physical connector, the output port and the mini PC’s ability to produce video. A known-good monitor and cable provide the fastest way to separate a display problem from a computer problem.

Picture during boot, but no signal after Windows starts
This pattern points more often to an incorrect projection mode, a display-driver change, incompatible resolution or refresh settings, or a firmware interaction. Use the Windows recovery shortcuts before opening the case or changing BIOS settings.

Run the basic signal-path checks
- Power the display and mini PC. Confirm that the monitor’s power light is on and that the mini PC has started. If the monitor has a separate power brick or switch, check it as well.
- Select HDMI manually. Open the monitor or television’s Input/Source menu and choose the HDMI socket used by the mini PC. Do not rely on automatic input detection while diagnosing the fault.
- Reseat both cable ends. Unplug the HDMI cable from the mini PC and display, inspect the plugs for damage, then push each end fully into its socket. A partially inserted plug can leave the display powered while carrying no usable signal.
- Remove intermediaries. Disconnect USB-C docks, HDMI switches, AV receivers, dongles and adapters. Connect the mini PC directly to the display for the test.
- Try another HDMI cable. Use a cable known to work with another computer or console. Intel’s external-display guidance specifically recommends testing a different HDMI cable.
- Try another output and another display. If the mini PC has more than one video output, test the other one. Connect it to a different monitor or television, or connect the original display to another computer. This cross-test identifies whether the fault follows the mini PC, cable or display.
After each change, wait several seconds for the display to renegotiate the connection. Record which combination produces an image; that result is more useful than changing several components at once.
Use Windows display recovery shortcuts
Cycle the projection mode
When Windows is running but the monitor says no signal, press Windows+P. A projection panel appears; press the shortcut repeatedly or use the arrow keys and Enter to cycle through PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend and Second screen only. Select a mode that sends video to the HDMI display. A previous presentation setup can leave the external screen disabled even though the mini PC is working normally.
Reset the graphics driver
Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. Microsoft documents this shortcut for resetting the graphics driver. A successful reset may produce a beep, a brief screen flicker or a short black screen. Give the system a moment to redraw before deciding that it failed.

Check whether Windows is responsive
Listen for the Windows sign-in sound, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, or use the keyboard’s Caps Lock indicator. If the computer responds while the external display remains blank, continue with projection and driver troubleshooting rather than treating the mini PC as completely unpowered.
Check the cable and connector type carefully
Mini PCs do not all use the same HDMI socket. Some have a full-size HDMI Type A port; others use mini-HDMI (Type C) and require a mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable or adapter. A physically similar connector that is not the correct type will not establish a link. Verify the port label and the cable’s plug shape before replacing hardware.
Inspect the socket for bent contacts, looseness or debris. Do not force a full-size plug into a mini-HDMI port. If an adapter is required, test a different adapter as well as a different cable because either component can fail.

For a direct diagnostic connection, avoid long chains of adapters and switches. Once a direct cable works, reconnect other equipment one item at a time to identify the component that interrupts the signal.

Update, roll back or reinstall the display driver
If the problem started after a Windows update, graphics-driver update or software installation, use Device Manager while the mini PC is connected to a working display (or through Remote Desktop if you already configured it).
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the listed graphics adapter and choose Update driver, then allow Windows to search or install the manufacturer’s current package.
- If the failure began immediately after an update, open Properties, select the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver when that option is available.
- If the driver is damaged, choose Uninstall device, restart the mini PC and install the current driver supplied for that exact mini PC model and Windows edition.
Use the mini PC manufacturer’s driver package when available; a generic package can omit model-specific display settings. Reboot after installation and test the HDMI connection directly, without a dock.

Check monitor and television firmware
Display firmware can affect HDMI handshakes, resolution detection and wake-from-sleep behavior. Check the monitor or television manufacturer’s support page for firmware instructions, and apply an update only for the exact model and region. Intel also advises checking television firmware when an external HDMI display fails.
After an update, power-cycle both devices: shut down the mini PC, turn off the display, disconnect power briefly if the manufacturer permits it, reconnect the HDMI cable, power on the display and then start the mini PC. This forces a fresh HDMI negotiation.
Test the connection before Windows loads
Enter BIOS or UEFI
Restart the mini PC and use the model’s documented setup key (commonly shown on the startup screen) to enter BIOS/UEFI. If the firmware menu appears on the HDMI display, the cable, port and basic video output are functioning; focus on Windows projection and drivers. If the display remains blank before the firmware screen, continue with hardware and firmware checks.

Confirm the selected graphics output
A mini PC may expose outputs from integrated graphics, a discrete GPU or both. Connect the monitor to the output driven by the active GPU. On a system with a discrete graphics card, a motherboard video port may remain inactive. MSI notes that a motherboard video connector cannot produce an image when the processor has no integrated graphics.
Check BIOS and firmware updates
Intel’s NUC guidance includes checking for a current BIOS and graphics driver, and describes BIOS-recovery procedures for cases where normal video output is unavailable. Use the exact recovery file and steps for the mini PC model; an interrupted or incorrect firmware update can make the system unbootable. Keep the unit on stable power during the process.

When resolution or refresh settings are the trigger
A monitor can report no signal when Windows is configured for a mode it cannot accept. If another display works, open Settings > System > Display, select the HDMI monitor and choose a supported resolution and refresh rate. Start with the display’s recommended setting, then test higher modes only after a stable picture is established.

Do not change several display settings simultaneously; record the last working value so you can reverse it.
What to do when the screen is blank but the mini PC is running
- Use a working display temporarily to complete driver and display-settings changes.
- If remote access was enabled previously, connect remotely and check Device Manager and Display settings without changing BIOS options blindly.
- Shut down fully rather than repeatedly forcing power off. Then reconnect only the mini PC, one HDMI cable and one display for a clean test.
- If the mini PC never reaches a logo or BIOS screen with a known-good display and cable, stop treating it as a Windows problem and arrange manufacturer support.
Common mistakes that prolong diagnosis
- Changing several parts at once: Replace or disconnect one item, then retest so the successful change is identifiable.
- Using the wrong HDMI format: A mini-HDMI socket requires the matching plug or a correctly fitted adapter.
- Leaving the monitor on automatic input: Select the exact HDMI input manually.
- Testing only through a dock: A direct connection is the baseline; docks add power, firmware and compatibility variables.
- Installing an unrelated driver utility: Start with the mini PC manufacturer’s display driver and Windows Device Manager. Third-party utilities can change drivers without model-specific validation.
- Updating BIOS from a generic file: Firmware must match the exact model and revision, and the manufacturer’s recovery instructions must be followed.
When to contact the mini PC manufacturer
Contact support after you have tested a different HDMI cable, another display, a direct connection and every appropriate output, and there is still no image before Windows starts. Provide the mini PC model, connector type, display model, cable type, whether a BIOS logo appears, and the exact test that failed. This information lets support distinguish a defective port or GPU from a display compatibility issue.
If the system is under warranty, avoid opening the chassis or attempting board-level repairs before checking the warranty terms. A loose port, failed graphics hardware or unsuccessful firmware recovery requires model-specific service rather than repeated driver changes.
