If a Samsung gaming TV will not show 4K at 120 Hz, VRR, or another HDMI 2.1 option, start with the TV’s exact model code and the HDMI port you are using. Then use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, enable Game Mode and Input Signal Plus, configure the console or PC for a supported output, and update both TV software and PC graphics drivers. HDMI 2.1, VRR, and 4K/120 are model- and port-specific features; the label on the television or the purchase year is not enough to prove that every port supports them.
The quickest reliable diagnosis is to simplify the connection: source directly into the designated gaming port, with one known-good cable and one target mode. Once 4K/120 works, add a receiver, soundbar, switch, capture device, or wall connection back individually. That separates a TV capability problem from a cabling, settings, or signal-path problem.
What must be supported for 4K/120 Hz or VRR to work
A working high-refresh gaming connection has five separate requirements. A failure in any one of them can make the feature disappear or force a lower resolution or refresh rate.

Do not treat “HDMI 2.1” as a single guaranteed performance level. A television can have HDMI 2.1-related features on one input but not another, or support 4K/120 while differing in VRR support. Samsung’s Canadian guidance also identifies 48 Gbps as a product capability label, not a promise that every port, cable, or source combination will deliver that rate.
1. Identify the exact Samsung TV model and the correct HDMI port
Find the full model code in the TV’s support or About screen, on its information label, or in the original documentation. Include the screen size and sales region when checking specifications. Model families can use different HDMI hardware, and Samsung’s menus and port assignments can change between years and software versions.
Use the port marked for gaming
Connect the console or PC directly to the HDMI input identified for 4K/120 Hz, often shown with a game-controller icon. Do not assume that port 4 is always the right choice. Samsung’s US NVIDIA guidance lists selected 2021 examples in which HDMI 2.1 is available only on HDMI 4, while Samsung’s Canada Game Mode guidance explains that some newer televisions provide more than one 4K/120 Hz port. Check the port diagram or manual for your exact set.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Samsung’s selected-model guidance also notes that certain Frame models have size-related limitations. A model name alone therefore cannot establish capability; the full model code and screen size matter. See Samsung’s NVIDIA graphics-card setup guidance and Samsung Canada’s Game Mode instructions for the model and port examples.
Rule out an incompatible path
For the first test, connect the source straight to the television. Temporarily remove an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, capture device, or wall plate so the signal has the shortest path. This is a diagnostic step, not proof that every intermediary device is incompatible; once the TV works directly, add equipment back one component at a time and verify its own 4K/120 and VRR specifications.
If a device in the chain is required for audio, test video first with the source connected to the TV and use the TV’s audio return connection separately where supported. Do not conclude that the TV is defective until the direct test has been completed.
2. Verify the HDMI cable and connection
Samsung specifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for features such as 4K at 120 frames per second and 8K at 60 frames per second. A cable that was adequate for 4K/60 may not sustain the higher data rate. Use a cable carrying the official Ultra High Speed certification mark, with a connector that matches the source and TV.
Cable certification is a requirement for a reliable 4K/120 test, not a guarantee that an unsupported TV or disabled setting will gain the feature. If the screen flickers, goes black, repeatedly reconnects, or drops to 60 Hz, test with a known-good certified cable of the shortest practical length. Inspect both plugs for damage and make sure each connector is fully seated.
When choosing a replacement, compare certification, the length needed for the installation, and connector compatibility rather than relying on an unverified brand claim. Avoid buying a cable before checking the model and port: a new cable cannot add 4K/120 or VRR to hardware that lacks it. Conversely, continuing to troubleshoot a high-refresh failure with an uncertified or damaged cable can obscure the real cause.

Samsung’s cable requirement and PC setup notes are documented in its NVIDIA graphics-card support article.
3. Enable the TV’s gaming and enhanced-input settings
Turn on Game Mode
Game Mode reduces processing intended for video playback and exposes the TV’s gaming signal options. Samsung says it will generally activate when a console is detected, but automatic activation does not occur with every console. With a PC, Samsung specifically says Game Mode will not turn on automatically, so enable it yourself from the TV’s Quick Settings.
On many recent models, the route is Quick Settings → All Settings → Connection → External Device Manager → Game Mode. The exact labels and location vary by model and software, so use the on-screen search if your menu differs.
If Game Mode is on but 120 Hz is still unavailable, do not repeatedly toggle picture presets. Continue through the port, cable, Input Signal Plus, source-output, and software checks. Game Mode cannot create a refresh rate that the TV, source, or link does not support.
Enable Input Signal Plus for the active port
Input Signal Plus allows an HDMI input to accept the expanded signal format needed by supported high-resolution, high-refresh sources. Samsung Canada’s current path is Settings/Quick Settings → All Settings → Connection → External Device Manager → Input Signal Plus. Turn it on for the specific HDMI port carrying the console or PC, then retest.
On Samsung models from 2018 and earlier, the corresponding setting is called HDMI UHD Color. It may be listed separately for each input. Samsung’s Gulf UHD gaming guide explains this older name and the enhanced-input setting; menus can differ by country, model, and firmware. See Samsung’s UHD gaming settings guide and its HDMI 2.1 overview.

Then verify the model’s manual; not every Samsung TV exposes the setting in the same place or supports the same enhanced modes.
4. Configure the console or PC to send a supported signal
Console checks
Open the console’s video-output settings and confirm that its model supports 4K output at 120 Hz and the VRR mode you want. Select 120 Hz only after the TV and cable are connected to the correct port. If the console offers an automatic or recommended setting, use it first; then check whether the TV reports the resulting resolution and refresh rate.
Console menu names and available options differ by console generation and firmware. Samsung’s cited support pages do not document a universal console menu path, so do not expect a setting shown in one console’s guide to exist on another. If 120 Hz is absent, check the console’s own specification and support documentation before changing TV settings repeatedly.

A console may offer 4K and 120 Hz as separate capabilities, and a particular game may not use both simultaneously. Confirm the console’s system-level output first, then check the game’s own performance or graphics options. If only one game reports a lower rate while the system test succeeds, that is a game configuration issue rather than proof of a failed HDMI connection.
PC checks
Confirm that the graphics card and its output connector support the required resolution, refresh rate, and VRR technology. Install the graphics driver required by the card, then select the Samsung display in the operating system’s display controls or graphics-card control panel and choose a supported 4K/120 mode. Samsung’s NVIDIA instructions specifically call for the needed graphics drivers and current TV software.
If the high-refresh mode is missing, test the certified cable and direct connection first. A PC can expose only modes that the graphics card, driver, cable link, and TV report through the connection; changing a TV menu cannot create a mode the hardware does not advertise.
For diagnosis, change one variable at a time. First establish a stable 4K/60 picture, then select 4K/120, and only afterward enable VRR. This makes it easier to identify whether the failure begins with bandwidth, the source’s mode selection, or variable-refresh negotiation.
5. Update the TV and retest in a controlled order
Open the TV’s Software Update section and install any available firmware. Samsung says an update may resolve a television problem, and its PC guidance also calls for current TV software. After the update:
- Power off the TV and source completely, then start the TV before the console or PC.
- Reconnect the source directly to the verified 4K/120 port with the certified Ultra High Speed cable.
- Confirm Game Mode and Input Signal Plus are enabled for that input.
- Set one target mode, such as 4K at 120 Hz, rather than changing resolution, HDR, and VRR simultaneously.
- Check the TV’s information, signal, or gaming-status display if your model provides one, and compare it with the source’s output status.
- If the test fails, return to the last known-working mode and record exactly what changed before trying the next variable.
The restart and status check are practical isolation steps. Samsung’s documented requirements are the compatible model and port, suitable cable, gaming settings, and current software.
Why VRR is missing even when HDMI 2.1 is present
Variable refresh rate requires support and correct configuration at both ends of the connection. The TV must implement VRR on the input being used, and the console or PC must support and enable a compatible VRR mode. The cable and intermediary equipment must also carry the negotiated signal.
- Verify VRR support for the exact TV model and HDMI port, not just the product family.
- Enable VRR in the source device’s video or display settings.
- Use the same direct connection and Input Signal Plus test used for 4K/120 Hz.
- Check that the source is actually outputting a supported refresh-rate range; a fixed 60 Hz output will not demonstrate variable refresh.
- Update the TV firmware and, on a PC, the graphics driver.
- Test VRR after stable 4K/120 operation, rather than treating a VRR failure as evidence that every HDMI feature is broken.
Do not promise VRR solely because a television advertises “HDMI 2.1,” because the TV is recent, or because another port on the same set supports 4K/120. Samsung’s support material explains VRR as an HDMI gaming feature but does not publish a complete matrix for every model, source, firmware, and region. If VRR remains absent after these checks, consult the support page and manual for the exact model code.
Use the symptom to choose the next test
| Symptom | Most useful next checks |
|---|---|
| 4K is available but only at 60 Hz | Confirm the designated 4K/120 port, replace the cable with a certified Ultra High Speed model, enable Input Signal Plus, and verify that the source is set to 120 Hz. |
| 120 Hz works intermittently or the screen blanks | Reseat both ends, test a shorter certified cable, bypass intermediary equipment, and update TV and PC software. |
| Game Mode does not appear | Enable it manually, especially for a PC; then confirm the source is connected to the intended HDMI input. |
| Input Signal Plus is unavailable | Check that you are editing the active HDMI port and look for the older “HDMI UHD Color” name on 2018-and-earlier models. |
| VRR is missing while 4K/120 works | Verify VRR support for the exact TV and source, enable VRR at the source, and check software versions. HDMI 2.1 alone is not sufficient evidence. |
| The source reports no compatible 4K/120 mode | Check the graphics card or console specification, driver, connector, cable, and port before changing picture settings. |
| The picture works directly but fails through a receiver or switch | Check that intermediary’s own 4K/120 and VRR specifications, firmware, input assignment, and cable connections; restore components one at a time. |
| Only one port works | Use the port identified in the manual or by the gaming icon. Do not infer that all other ports have identical bandwidth. |
Regional and software-version caveats
Samsung Canada’s Game Mode article applies to televisions sold in Canada and warns that settings and options can differ in other countries. It also notes that screenshots and menu layouts vary by model and software version. Samsung’s US NVIDIA page covers a selected list of models rather than every television sold worldwide. Treat those pages as setup guidance, not a universal compatibility database.

When a specification conflicts with what the TV displays, check all of the following together: full model code, screen size, sales region, firmware version, HDMI port number, source device, and cable certification. A support article for a similarly named model may describe different hardware.
Regional differences also explain why a menu path or port count shown online may not match the set in front of you. Use the documentation for the television’s market and current firmware, and record any regional suffix in the model code when contacting support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to stop troubleshooting and contact Samsung
Contact Samsung support with the full model code, region, firmware version, source device, cable certification, HDMI port number, and the exact signal shown by the TV. Explain which tests have succeeded: for example, whether 4K/60 works, whether 4K/120 appears when connected directly, and whether Game Mode and Input Signal Plus are enabled. That information lets support distinguish an unsupported feature from a port, cable, configuration, or firmware fault.
If the exact manual says the model and port support the requested feature but the option is still absent after a direct connection, certified cable, correct settings, source configuration, and updates, the remaining issue may require model-specific service guidance rather than another generic HDMI change.
Frequently asked questions
Which HDMI port should I use for 4K/120 on a Samsung TV?
Use the port identified in the exact manual or marked with the game-controller icon. Some Samsung 2021 models in the US NVIDIA guidance limit HDMI 2.1 to port 4, while some newer sets have multiple 4K/120 ports. Port 4 is not a universal rule.
Do I need a new HDMI cable for 4K/120?
Samsung specifies a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K at 120 frames per second. If your existing cable is uncertified, damaged, too long for a stable installation, or only known to work at 4K/60, use a known-good certified cable as a diagnostic requirement. It will not add the feature to an incompatible TV or source.
Why does Game Mode not turn on automatically?
Samsung says automatic activation generally occurs when a console is detected, but it may not happen with every console. PC users must enable Game Mode manually. Check the active input and the TV’s Quick Settings.
What is Input Signal Plus called on an older Samsung TV?
On Samsung models from 2018 and earlier, the comparable setting is called HDMI UHD Color. It may be configured separately for each HDMI input, and the location varies by model and software.

Can HDMI 2.1 guarantee VRR?
No. VRR depends on the exact TV input, source device, enabled source setting, cable path, firmware, and regional model. Confirm VRR in the specifications for both ends of the connection.

Why does my PC not list 4K/120?
Check the graphics card and connector capability, install the needed graphics driver, use the designated TV port and certified Ultra High Speed cable, enable Input Signal Plus, and update TV software. The PC can list only modes that the complete connection advertises.
Should I connect my console through a soundbar or receiver?
For diagnosis, connect it directly to the TV first. If that works, restore the receiver or soundbar and verify that the intermediary supports the same 4K/120 and VRR signal. The direct test identifies the failing part without assuming every intermediary is incompatible.
What information should I give Samsung support?
Provide the complete model code, screen size and region, firmware version, source device, HDMI port, cable certification, selected output mode, and whether direct 4K/60 or 4K/120 testing succeeded. Include whether Game Mode and Input Signal Plus are enabled.

Is HDMI port 4 always the 4K/120 port?
No. Samsung identifies port 4 for selected 2021 models, while other televisions have multiple 4K/120 inputs. Follow the exact model manual or the port’s gaming icon.
What cable does Samsung recommend for 4K/120?
Samsung specifies a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Compare certification, practical installation length, and connector compatibility; do not rely only on a brand name.
Recommended Free Tools
Why will Game Mode not activate?
Automatic activation is not guaranteed for every console, and Samsung says it does not happen automatically for a PC. Turn Game Mode on manually from Quick Settings and verify the connected input.
The Bottom Line
Fix Samsung HDMI 2.1, VRR, and 4K/120 problems in order: confirm the exact model and gaming port, connect directly with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, enable Game Mode and Input Signal Plus (or HDMI UHD Color on older sets), configure the source, and update software. If the feature still does not appear, check the model-specific manual and contact Samsung with the complete test details; HDMI 2.1 branding alone is not a guarantee.
