This guide covers the original PC release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, not the Definitive Edition. Identify your storefront and build before changing files: Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher, Windows Store, and retail/DVD copies do not always use the same fixes or support the same modifications. Then match the remedy to the exact symptom, back up saves and settings, and test one change at a time.

Start by identifying your edition and symptom

Write down the storefront, game version or build if it is shown, and the exact wording of any error. A save made by one release can fail in another, and community recovery packages may explicitly exclude Windows Store and Rockstar Games Launcher copies. Do not apply a Steam or retail instruction to a Windows Store installation simply because the screen looks similar.

What to record before troubleshooting

  • Storefront or media: Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher, Windows Store, or retail/DVD.
  • The exact symptom: no launch, a startup crash, a freeze during play, a mission or vehicle behaving incorrectly, a save that will not load, a new game starting instead of your save, an unsupported resolution, a stretched image, misplaced HUD, or a graphics-driver failure.
  • The complete error text, especially whether it says “Grand Theft Auto SA requires at least DirectX version 9.0” or “Cannot find 800×600 video mode.”
  • Whether you recently changed resolution, installed a patch or mod, downgraded a build, changed monitors, or moved save files.

Back up before deleting or converting anything

Close the game and copy the entire GTA San Andreas User Files folder to a separate location. Include every save and the gta_sa.set settings file if it exists. Keep the untouched copy outside the User Files folder until the replacement configuration or converted save has loaded successfully. A backup is especially important before deleting settings, converting a save, downgrading, or installing a plugin.

Check the official baseline first

Rockstar Games Customer Support’s requirements page, last updated May 1, 2024, lists the following baseline for the PC game. These are the requirements published on that page, not a guarantee that every modern driver or graphics device will work.

#1 Best Overall
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas V2.0 - PC
  • Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
  • Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals
  • Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
  • Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
  • New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
Category Rockstar’s published specification
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit
Processor 1 GHz Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon
Memory 256 MB minimum; 384 MB recommended
Graphics 64 MB DirectX 9-compatible card, GeForce 3 or better, minimum; 128 MB Nvidia GeForce 6 or better, recommended
API DirectX 9
Storage 4.7 GB of disk space

Rockstar warns that some mobile chipsets, integrated graphics, and AGP cards may be incompatible, and that requirements can change over time. A computer that greatly exceeds the old specification can still expose a driver, display-mode, overlay, or timing problem.

Run the low-risk checks

  1. Install current Windows updates.
  2. Install the latest graphics driver supplied for your GPU.
  3. Run the game with administrator privileges as a diagnostic test.
  4. Temporarily disable screen overlays, recording, sharing, and performance-monitoring software.
  5. If you use Steam, run its game-file verification command for the San Andreas installation. This checks for altered or missing files without requiring you to delete saves.

Rockstar’s general PC troubleshooting page, updated December 12, 2024, specifically says, “Ensure that your video drivers are the most up to date versions” and “Disable any screen overlay, recording, or sharing software.” Those are broad PC checks, not a title-specific promise that one of them will cure every crash.

Fix “Game Doesn’t Launch / Crashing At Start-up”

When the error names DirectX 9.0

If the message is exactly “Grand Theft Auto SA requires at least DirectX version 9.0,” a Steam community technical guide attributes the problem to a disabled legacy Windows component called DirectPlay. Its procedure is:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Settings or Control Panel and search for Windows Features or Turn Windows features on or off.
  2. Expand Legacy Components.
  3. Enable DirectPlay.
  4. Confirm the change and restart Windows.
  5. Launch the game again before making another change.

The guide presents this as applicable to Steam, digital, and DVD-ROM copies, but not Windows Store copies. It is community guidance for that particular message, not an official universal repair. If DirectPlay is already enabled, leave it enabled and continue with the symptom-specific checks rather than repeatedly toggling it.

Rank #2
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Second Edition
  • Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities you can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
  • Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals
  • Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
  • Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
  • New graphics elements -- cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them

When a settings file is corrupted or incompatible

A launch or loading failure that began after a downgrade or display change may involve gta_sa.set. The community guide’s suggested reset is to close the game, copy that file to your backup location, and delete the original from the GTA San Andreas User Files folder. The next launch creates fresh settings and resets resolution, controls, and other configuration choices.

Deleting gta_sa.set is not an official Rockstar diagnosis. It is reversible only if you made the backup, and it should not be confused with deleting saves. If the game starts, reapply display and control settings gradually; an option that immediately recreates the crash identifies the setting to avoid.

When a community patch is appropriate

SilentPatchSA is an unofficial plugin intended to address PC-specific bugs. Treat it as an optional, build-specific intervention after backups and basic checks, not as the first official repair. Read the current project instructions for your exact release, preserve the clean original files, and remove the plugin if it introduces a new crash. A package or installation method designed for one storefront may not work on another.

Stop crashes, freezes, and odd behavior during play

Turn on the in-game frame limiter

The Steam community technical guide describes timing-related problems as frame rates rise and recommends enabling San Andreas’s built-in frame limiter. The reported symptoms include mission difficulties, abnormal movement or aiming, unusual vehicle handling, cutscenes that never finish, and crashes while listening to user radio.

Rank #3
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
  • Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals
  • Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
  • Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
  • New graphic elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
  1. Start the game and open its display or graphics options.
  2. Find the Frame Limiter setting.
  3. Set it to enabled, apply the change, and restart the game if requested.
  4. Test the mission or activity that previously failed before changing any other performance setting.

Do not treat an uncapped frame rate as a general performance improvement for this game. A setup guide discussing the unofficial Framerate Vigilante approach notes that frame-rate-related issues can remain and that some vehicle and mission problems may still occur at 60 frames per second. The modification is an option for a compatible build, not a guarantee of perfect behavior.

Handle the multi-monitor car-explosion crash

The same technical guide describes a crash when a car explodes on a multi-monitor setup. Test one of these community-sourced workarounds:

  • Temporarily disable the additional monitors in Windows, then launch the game using only the primary display.
  • Try Windows XP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode on the game executable.
  • On a compatible build, use SilentPatchSA, which the guide says addresses this issue while allowing other monitors to remain enabled.

Change only one variable at a time and restore the normal display configuration after the test. Compatibility mode can affect other older-game behavior, so it is not a blanket recommendation for every crash.

Separate a timing fault from a damaged installation

If enabling the limiter changes movement, mission completion, cutscenes, or radio-related stability, keep the limiter enabled and do not immediately replace game files. If there is no change, return to the low-risk checks, verify Steam files when applicable, and test with overlays disabled. A crash that occurs only after a particular mod, executable replacement, or downgrade should be investigated as a build or modification conflict rather than assumed to be a graphics-card failure.

Repair “Save File Not Working” without losing progress

First decide whether the save is damaged or from the wrong build

A save that crashes during loading or opens a new game may be healthy but incompatible with the installed release. The community guide warns that saves from retail DVD or older Steam versions may not work with a different Steam or retail build. Version mismatches can cause a load crash or unexpected behavior, so do not begin by deleting the save.

Use a safe save-recovery sequence

  1. Exit San Andreas completely.
  2. Copy the original save and the entire User Files folder to a separate backup location.
  3. Record the save’s source version as precisely as you can: retail/DVD, older Steam, newer Steam, or another storefront.
  4. Record the installed target version and storefront.
  5. Try the untouched save once after the low-risk startup checks. If it still fails and the source/target pair is known to differ, consult current documentation for a third-party save converter.
  6. Select a conversion profile only when it explicitly matches your source and target versions. Do not guess between “old” and “new” Steam or retail options.
  7. Save the converted copy under a new name, place only that copy in the game’s User Files folder, and keep the original outside it.
  8. Confirm that the converted game loads, displays the expected progress, and can create a new save before relying on it.

The converter and its present compatibility were not independently validated here. Verify its current instructions and version support before use. If no documented source-to-target match exists, keep the original backup and do not apply a conversion profile at random.

Why deleting saves is the wrong first move

Deleting a save cannot repair a version mismatch and permanently removes the easiest recovery path. Preserve every original file until a replacement has loaded and written a new save successfully. If only one slot fails while other slots work, that is evidence for a damaged or incompatible slot; it is not proof that the whole installation should be erased.

Fix graphics, resolution, aspect ratio, and HUD problems

Classify the display symptom

  • “Cannot find 800×600 video mode”: treat this as a display-mode or configuration problem first. Back up and reset gta_sa.set, then test a supported mode before adding a widescreen modification.
  • Stretched or squashed image: investigate aspect-ratio handling and the selected resolution.
  • HUD or menu elements in the wrong place: investigate widescreen scaling rather than assuming a GPU driver is defective.
  • Black screen, driver reset, or immediate graphics crash: update the driver, disable overlays, test administrator privileges, and verify files where supported.
  • Only one monitor causes the failure: use the multi-monitor checks in the crash section.

Changing several resolutions, driver versions, and mods at once makes the cause harder to identify. Reset the configuration, test a standard mode, and record the result before proceeding.

Best Value
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  • Features exclusive to the PC version include the ability to edit the lead character's appearance and switch to a radio station that plays MP3 files stored on the computer. Perhaps the biggest change is the improved visuals, now optimized specifically for high-performance systems. Players will be able to view the game with new 32-bit textures, longer viewable distances, and support for multiple display resolutions. Furthermore, players can watch replays of the last 30 seconds of action and then e-mail them to friends.
  • Offers support for 32-bit textures and multiple display resolutions for sharper visuals than the PS2 game Import your favorite tunes for play on a custom radio station, or listen to over nine hours of '80s music
  • Record the last 30 seconds of stunts, shootouts, or fiery crashes and show them to friends via e-mail
  • Customize the look of Tommy Vercetti and his threads with the player skin editor
  • Supports EAX 3.0 audio for enveloping sound effects and music

Use Widescreen Fix for aspect ratio and HUD issues

A setup guide describes ThirteenAG’s Widescreen Fix as improving widescreen support, including aspect ratio, HUD placement, and field of view. It also identifies Widescreen Frontend Textures as a separate, optional component for loading screens.

These are community modifications. Check the current project instructions for your exact game build, back up the clean executable and original files, and install only the component that addresses your symptom. A fix for the HUD does not automatically repair a driver crash or a missing video mode. If the result is worse, remove the added files and restore the clean backup.

Do not downgrade every installation

Some recovery-package methods combine a particular executable version with SilentPatchSA and widescreen files, but the setup guidance explicitly excludes Rockstar Games Launcher and Windows Store copies. Downgrading a different storefront can create save incompatibility, launcher failures, or new crashes. Use a downgrade only when the instructions identify your exact release and you have a verified backup.

Choose between a clean troubleshooting path and community patches

Approach Best fit Store/build compatibility Reversibility and backup Evidence and remaining limits
Official baseline checks Unknown startup crashes, driver or overlay conflicts, Steam file problems Broad PC guidance; Steam verification is for Steam Low risk; normally reversible, but back up before file operations Official Rockstar guidance; not a title-specific guarantee
DirectPlay enablement The exact DirectX 9.0 startup message Community guide says Steam, digital, and DVD-ROM; excludes Windows Store Low risk; restart required Community-authored and symptom-specific
Delete and recreate gta_sa.set Configuration-related launch or loading failure, especially after a downgrade Depends on the installed release and User Files location Reversible only with a backup; resets settings Community suggestion, not an official diagnosis
Built-in frame limiter Timing-related mission, movement, vehicle, cutscene, radio, or crash symptoms In-game option; generally less release-sensitive than external patches Easy to reverse Community technical guidance; does not prove every crash is timing-related
SilentPatchSA Known PC-specific bugs on a compatible build Release-specific; instructions differ by storefront Back up clean files and remove the plugin if needed Unofficial; no promise that all bugs disappear
Widescreen Fix and optional frontend textures Aspect ratio, HUD, field of view, or loading-screen presentation Must match the game build; recovery methods may exclude Windows Store and Rockstar Launcher Back up original files; remove additions to revert Community modifications; unrelated to every driver or save failure
Save conversion A documented source/target version mismatch Only use a profile that names both versions Keep the untouched save outside User Files Third-party tool compatibility can change; never guess a profile

A symptom-led order of operations

  1. Identify the build. Note Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher, Windows Store, or retail/DVD and record the exact error.
  2. Protect data. Copy User Files, saves, and gta_sa.set before deleting, converting, downgrading, or modding.
  3. Apply official basics. Update Windows and graphics drivers, test administrator privileges, disable overlays, and verify Steam files when applicable.
  4. Use the matching narrow fix. DirectPlay is for the named DirectX 9.0 message; resetting gta_sa.set is for configuration-related failures; the frame limiter is for timing symptoms.
  5. Address presentation separately. Use a compatible widescreen modification only for aspect-ratio, HUD, field-of-view, or frontend problems.
  6. Escalate carefully. Consider SilentPatchSA, compatibility mode, or a documented save converter only after identifying the build and preserving clean files.
  7. Validate the result. Reproduce the original symptom, test a new save, and confirm that another monitor, mission, or resolution still works before removing your backup.

When to stop and restore the clean installation

Restore the backed-up executable and configuration if a patch introduces a new startup error, if the game begins rejecting saves that previously loaded, or if a widescreen change causes menus to disappear. A clean installation with the frame limiter enabled and overlays disabled is a useful control test. If the clean build works, reintroduce one optional component at a time; if it does not, return to the storefront-specific checks rather than stacking more modifications.

There is no single patch that fixes every San Andreas crash. Edition, build, symptom, display setup, and save origin determine which intervention is appropriate. Keeping those variables separate is the safest way to recover the game without sacrificing progress.
