Start by checking whether Rockstar or your console platform is having an outage. If services are available, test your internet connection, inspect NAT, then apply only the port, DNS, router and cache steps for your platform. Error messages such as “Saving failed,” “Timed out locating session,” “Failed to find a compatible GTA Online session,” “Rockstar Games Services are unavailable,” and “Connection to the session lost due to an unknown network error” can all have more than one cause.
The sequence below separates a server problem from a fault in your home network and gives recovery steps for PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
1. Check Rockstar and platform service status first
Open Rockstar’s Service Status page while the error is occurring, and check the entry for your GTA Online platform. Also check the online-service status for your console platform. Rockstar says an “online services are unavailable” message can result from either a Rockstar outage or a problem with your own network, so the message alone cannot identify the cause.

If maintenance or an outage is shown, wait for recovery before changing router settings or forwarding ports.

If status is operational, continue with the local checks below. A successful status check narrows the possibilities but does not prove that your connection, NAT or router is healthy. Take a screenshot or note the time of the status result; that timestamp helps Rockstar or your ISP compare your report with their logs.
2. Match the message to a test, not a guess
Rockstar’s troubleshooting pages use several different error strings. Treat them as symptoms rather than diagnoses:
- “Rockstar Games Services are unavailable.” Check service status, then test another internet connection. Rockstar documents this wording and explains that either its servers or your network may be responsible in its PC unavailable-services guide.
- “Connection to the session lost due to an unknown network error.” This indicates that the game lost session communication, but it does not distinguish Wi-Fi interference, NAT restrictions, routing trouble or a service incident. Use the connection, NAT and alternate-network tests.
- “Timed out locating session” and “Failed to find a compatible GTA Online session.” These can occur when matchmaking or peer/session communication cannot complete. Check NAT and the platform-specific network requirements.
- “Saving failed.” Do not assume that your save is permanently lost. First check service status and connection stability, then avoid quitting immediately after major activity until the service is available and the warning clears.
Write down the exact wording, including whether it appears at sign-in, while joining a session, or after you are already playing. “Services unavailable” at launch points you toward status and sign-in checks, while a session-lost message after several minutes makes a local path, NAT or wireless comparison especially useful. The wording narrows the next test; it does not prove a single cause.

3. Test the connection and device before changing settings
Confirm that the device is actually online
- On the same PC or console, open another online service or a web page.
- Run the platform’s built-in network test and note whether it reports packet loss, NAT problems or a failed sign-in.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups and streams on your network while testing GTA Online.
- Restart the game after the test so it creates a fresh session rather than reusing a failed connection.
Test at the time the failure normally happens. A connection that works for browsing can still fail when GTA Online establishes a multiplayer session, so compare the game result with the platform test instead of treating a working web page as proof that every path is healthy.
Use Rockstar’s speed targets correctly
Rockstar’s PC and Xbox Series X|S guides give the following troubleshooting targets. They are publisher-stated targets, not independent measurements and not a guarantee that gameplay will be free of lag or disconnections.

If your result is below a target, stop competing traffic and test again before changing DNS or ports. If it stays below the target, the useful next step is your ISP, not repeated game reinstalls. If the result meets the target but sessions still fail, continue with NAT and alternate-network checks because speed alone does not establish stable session communication.

Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet on PC
If PC Wi-Fi continues to fail while other tests look normal, connect the computer directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the session test. Rockstar specifically suggests trying a wired connection when wireless remains troublesome. This is a diagnostic comparison: if wired play is stable and Wi-Fi is not, investigate signal strength, interference, distance or wireless congestion rather than assuming the game installation is damaged. A cable is optional and is not a guaranteed cure.
4. Check NAT before forwarding anything
Network Address Translation (NAT) maps a device’s private address and ports to the public internet. Rockstar describes the practical multiplayer effect this way:

Rockstar recommends Open or Moderate NAT for PC. Its Strict NAT guide, updated January 23, 2026, describes UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) as one possible way to let the router create the required mappings. Router menus differ, so enable UPnP only if you understand how your router applies it and can reverse the change.
A Strict result can reflect more than one router setting. The console or PC may be behind a second router, a carrier-grade NAT service, or an ISP restriction. If UPnP is enabled and the result never changes, document that result and ask the ISP whether the connection uses another NAT layer. Do not assume that adding more forwards will overcome an upstream restriction.

- PC: Use the NAT information shown by the game, launcher or router, then compare it with Rockstar’s Strict NAT guidance.
- Xbox Series X|S: Open the console’s network settings and run the NAT test. Record whether it reports Open, Moderate or Strict.
- PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4: Run the network-connection test in the console’s network settings and note the NAT type. Follow Rockstar’s dedicated PS5 or PS4 procedure for the result shown.
Do not disable the router firewall as a first response. Do not add random port forwards: Rockstar warns that opening or forwarding unrelated ports can change NAT behavior and create new security or connectivity problems.
5. Apply the correct port requirements for your platform
Port rules are platform-specific. Forwarding a port used by another platform does not automatically fix GTA Online and can make NAT less predictable. Use the source for your exact device and router model.

After a port or UPnP change, restart the router and the game, then run the same session test. Change one category at a time and record what you changed. If NAT remains Strict, the router may be behind another router, a carrier-grade NAT service or an ISP restriction; contact the ISP rather than endlessly adding forwards.

6. Try DNS only after the basic checks
DNS changes can help when name resolution is failing, but they do not repair low bandwidth, packet loss or a Strict NAT. Save or photograph the existing DNS settings before changing them so you can restore them.

Enter the values in the device’s network-adapter or console network configuration, reconnect, and test GTA Online. If the error becomes worse, restore the saved automatic or previous DNS values. DNS is a reversible comparison, not a reason to purchase new hardware or leave unrelated router options changed.
7. Restart the router and isolate the network path
Perform a full router restart
- Close GTA Online and shut down the affected device.
- Unplug the router’s power cable.
- Leave it unplugged for about 10 minutes, as Rockstar’s guides recommend.
- Reconnect power, wait until the internet connection is fully restored, then restart the device and game.
This clears temporary router state. It does not upgrade your internet plan or fix an ISP outage. If you use a separate modem and router, restart them according to the manufacturer’s sequence and wait for the connection to return before starting the game.
Test another connection
For a PC “services unavailable” error, Rockstar suggests trying another internet connection, such as a mobile hotspot. Use the hotspot only long enough to test sign-in and a session; it may have data limits or higher latency. Interpret the result as follows:
- GTA Online works on the hotspot but not at home: the home router, ISP routing, DNS path or NAT is implicated. Contact the ISP with the time, error text and network-test results.
- The same error occurs on both networks: a Rockstar or platform incident, account/session issue or game-side problem remains possible. Recheck service status and use Rockstar Support.
- Only Wi-Fi fails while Ethernet works: focus on wireless interference, signal quality or the access point rather than forwarding more ports.
A hotspot comparison is valuable because it changes the entire path between your device and Rockstar. It does not prove that every home-router feature is wrong, but it tells you where to concentrate the next call for help. Do not treat a temporary hotspot as a permanent replacement for a home connection.
8. Use the platform-specific cache and power steps
Xbox Series X|S
Rockstar’s Xbox guide instructs you to turn off the console, unplug its power for two minutes, reconnect it and start it again. It also provides an Alternate MAC Address clear procedure. On the Xbox, open network settings, choose the advanced network options, select Alternate MAC address, choose Clear, and restart when prompted. Run the network test and GTA Online again.

These steps are for Xbox Series X|S. Do not apply them to a PC or PlayStation and assume an equivalent cache operation exists. If clearing the alternate MAC address does not change the NAT result or error, return to the platform test and router comparison instead of repeating it indefinitely.
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
Rockstar publishes separate procedures for each PlayStation generation. Use the PS5 guide or PS4 guide for its exact power, network and cache instructions. Do not present the Xbox Alternate MAC procedure as a universal PlayStation fix. The PS5 page was updated July 5, 2024, and the PS4 page August 28, 2024; check those live pages for any revised menu wording.
9. Avoid common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing settings during an outage: If the status page reports maintenance, wait. A router reset cannot restore a service that is offline.
- Using the wrong platform’s ports: Xbox, PlayStation and PC requirements are not interchangeable. Apply only the values listed for your device.
- Treating speed as a guarantee: 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload are troubleshooting targets, not a promise of stable sessions.
- Disabling security controls: Do not turn off the firewall or create unrelated forwards simply because a session failed.
- Changing DNS without recording the old values: Save the original settings so you can undo the test.
- Buying hardware first: Rockstar’s guidance supports a wired Ethernet comparison on PC, but it does not identify a new router as a normal cure. Use the hotspot and wired tests to show whether hardware or the ISP is actually implicated.
- Assuming cache steps are universal: Xbox’s two-minute power removal and Alternate MAC procedure should not be presented as PC or PlayStation instructions.
10. A decision checklist for the common failure patterns

11. When to contact your ISP or Rockstar Support
Contact the ISP when other devices also lose connectivity, speed remains below the stated targets, NAT is Strict despite correct local settings, or the hotspot comparison points to the home connection. Give the ISP the exact error, timestamps, platform, NAT result and whether wired or hotspot testing changed the outcome. Ask whether there is an outage, routing problem, carrier-grade NAT or another upstream restriction.
Use Rockstar Support when the status page is operational, your device passes its network test, the same failure occurs on another connection, or the platform-specific steps do not resolve repeated session loss. Include the platform, game edition, error wording, service-status result and the steps already completed. The official guides were updated at different times—PC May 2, 2024; PS5 July 5, 2024; PS4 August 28, 2024; Xbox Series X|S September 18, 2025; and PC Strict NAT January 23, 2026—so recheck the live pages when you report a problem.

What should I check first when GTA Online says Rockstar Games Services are unavailable?

Which NAT type is best for GTA Online?
Rockstar describes Open NAT as able to play with Open, Moderate or Strict; Moderate as able to play with Open or Moderate; and Strict as limited to Open. Open or Moderate is preferred. Check the NAT result on your platform, consider UPnP where appropriate, and avoid unrelated port forwards or disabling the firewall.

How do I clear the GTA Online cache on Xbox Series X|S?
