Start by checking Rockstar’s live service status, then confirm your internet works outside the game. If Rockstar reports an outage or maintenance, wait; changing router settings will not restore a service that is unavailable. If services are operational, work through the checks for your platform in order: connection quality, NAT and router restrictions, the correct game and platform ports, then the later diagnostics that fit your symptoms.
Start with the two checks that rule out the biggest causes
1. Check Rockstar’s live service status
Open Rockstar Games Customer Support’s Service Status page and look specifically at GTA Online for your platform. The status can differ by service or platform, so do not assume that an issue affecting one system means all players are affected. If the page reports an outage or scheduled maintenance, wait and check again later rather than changing your network configuration.
A status snapshot is only accurate for the time shown on it. For example, Rockstar’s status page showed GTA Online operational on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One at 7:21 PM UTC on September 25, 2026. That is a historical snapshot, not a statement about availability now. Use the live page when you troubleshoot, and check it again if the problem changes or continues.
2. Make sure your internet connection works
On the device you play on, confirm that you can use other online services or load a few websites. If they also fail, troubleshoot the home internet connection before GTA Online. If they work but the game does not, continue to the game and platform checks below. A successful web-page test is useful, but it does not prove that the connection is stable enough for a multiplayer session.

Rockstar’s PC and Xbox One troubleshooting guidance lists 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload. These are support targets, not guarantees: meeting them does not rule out latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, router restrictions or a problem elsewhere between your connection and the game. Upload matters as well as download because the game needs to exchange information in both directions.
If you play over Wi-Fi, test with the gaming device connected to the router by Ethernet, if practical. Change only the connection for this test, then try GTA Online again. If the wired test works more reliably, that points toward the Wi-Fi link or its conditions; it does not establish that every session problem is caused by Wi-Fi. An Ethernet cable is a straightforward optional test for someone whose device can reach the router; buying one is not necessary if you already have a wired connection or cannot conveniently connect the device.
When comparing the wired and wireless tests, keep the rest of the setup as consistent as you can. Try the same game action, such as joining a session, and note whether the error changes. If you switch multiple settings at once, it becomes harder to tell whether the change helped. If both connection types fail in the same way, move on rather than assuming that Wi-Fi is the only possible cause.

Use the error or symptom to choose the next check
“Why can’t I join a GTA Online session?” and “Why does GTA Online keep kicking me out?” can describe different failures. The exact message and when it appears help narrow the next step. Rockstar’s connection guidance addresses the following errors and situations:
- “Rockstar Games services are unavailable”: check the live service status first. If services are operational, use the connection checks below; Rockstar’s PC guidance also includes testing a different network.
- “Timed out locating session”: first rule out an outage, then check your connection, NAT and router restrictions. A timeout while looking for a session does not by itself identify which part of the connection failed.
- “Failed to find a compatible session”: check for restrictive NAT or router rules that may limit which players or sessions your device can connect to.
- A session is lost because of an “unknown network error”: verify the connection is stable, try Ethernet if you were on Wi-Fi, and then check NAT and the relevant ports.
- “Saving failed”: Rockstar lists this among its connection-related errors. Check service status and your connection before changing router settings; the message alone does not prove that a particular router setting is responsible.
If you can join but are disconnected later, note whether the interruption happens at roughly the same point each time and whether other internet services remain available. That observation helps distinguish a broader internet interruption from an issue limited to joining or maintaining a GTA Online session, but it is not a diagnosis by itself.
Use the wording and timing of the error as clues, not as proof of a particular cause. A session-search timeout and a failed compatible-session search may both lead you to check NAT, but they do not establish that NAT is the problem. Likewise, “services are unavailable” is a reason to check Rockstar’s live status; if the status page shows services operational, it is still worth checking your own connection and platform settings.
For a saving message, avoid making several router changes simply because the word “failed” appears. First check whether Rockstar lists an outage and whether your connection is otherwise working. If the message persists while the service appears operational, keep a note of when it appears and which platform you use so you can describe the issue accurately to support.

Check NAT and router restrictions for your platform
NAT affects which other players’ connections your device can communicate with. A restrictive NAT can reduce the pool of compatible connections, which can contribute to failed session searches or connection problems. Rockstar’s PC guidance describes these NAT relationships:

These definitions are from Rockstar’s PC guidance and should not be treated as universal labels for every console or router. Console NAT menus and terminology vary. Check the network status screen on your own platform, then follow the matching Rockstar connection procedure for that system and your router. Do not apply PC instructions to a console just because the labels look similar.
On PC, Rockstar also has a separate guide for resolving Strict NAT type errors, last updated January 23, 2026. Use its procedure for a Strict NAT result rather than guessing at router changes. For PlayStation and Xbox, use the troubleshooting guidance for the specific console family; its menus and steps are platform-specific.
A NAT result is most useful when you pair it with the symptom. If you can connect to some sessions but not others, compatibility restrictions are one reasonable area to investigate. If all online services fail or Rockstar reports an outage, a NAT change is unlikely to address the primary issue. Avoid broad router changes based only on a generic online tip: use the relevant Rockstar procedure and record the original configuration before altering it.

Rockstar lists these GTA Online UDP ports: 6672, 61455, 61456, 61457 and 61458. Its connection instructions also list platform-network ports for PlayStation Network or Xbox network. Those are additional, platform-specific requirements; the GTA Online list is not a complete combined list for every PC and console.
Use the GTA Online ports and the platform ports specified for your own system in Rockstar’s corresponding guide. Do not open unrelated ports or copy another platform’s list. Router interfaces differ, so if you cannot identify the correct port-forwarding controls, consult the router’s documentation rather than making broad firewall changes. Port forwarding is a diagnostic configuration step, not a guaranteed fix; a service outage, ISP issue or other connection fault can produce similar symptoms.
In practice, this means first identifying whether you play on PC, PlayStation or Xbox, then using the matching instructions. Do not combine every number you find into a single rule set. The five UDP ports above are the GTA Online ports Rockstar lists; PlayStation Network and Xbox network have their own additional requirements in their respective procedures. A platform-specific list matters because opening the wrong ports can leave the original issue unresolved while changing unrelated router settings.

The Rockstar procedures name platform-specific network ports, but the port numbers for PlayStation Network and Xbox network are not reproduced here. Use the list in the procedure for your console and region rather than treating the five GTA Online UDP ports above as a complete console setup.

Xbox Series X|S also has the cache and alternate MAC address cleanup steps described below. These are not universal steps: they should not be transferred to PlayStation or PC, and Xbox One has its own guide.
For PlayStation 4, the safest route is to check PlayStation 4 in the live service status and use the PlayStation procedure for that console. A PlayStation 5 guide may be useful background, but menu paths and instructions should not be assumed identical between console generations. The same principle applies to Xbox One versus Xbox Series X|S.
Use later diagnostics only after status and basic checks
Test another network to isolate the source
For a PC “services are unavailable” problem that persists while Rockstar reports services operational, Rockstar suggests connecting through another network, such as a mobile hotspot. This is an isolation test, not a recommended permanent connection. If GTA Online works on the alternate network but not your usual one, the difference points toward the original router, ISP or network path; it does not identify which one without further testing.
Mobile data may have different limits, performance and costs from your home connection. Keep the test brief, and do not download updates over a metered connection unless you intend to. If the alternate network also fails, that result does not prove the game service is at fault; return to the platform checks and verify the status again.
Make the alternate-network test a controlled comparison: use it only long enough to see whether the same sign-in or session action behaves differently, then switch back. A hotspot working once does not prove that the home router is defective, and a hotspot failing does not rule out a home-network issue. The test narrows the possibilities; it is not a permanent workaround or a substitute for the correct NAT and port checks.
Restart the router when the connection points to it
Rockstar’s troubleshooting suggestions include restarting the router. Do this after checking service status and confirming the issue is not a wider outage. Follow the router maker’s normal restart procedure, allow the connection to return fully, then test the game again. A restart can refresh a router’s connection, but it cannot correct an ISP outage or guarantee that NAT and port restrictions are resolved.

If other devices are also having trouble, restarting the router may be a reasonable basic step, but check with your ISP if the broader connection problem remains. Avoid repeatedly restarting it as a substitute for checking the status page or noting whether the connection itself returns. Once the router is back online, test one symptom at a time so the result is useful.
Change DNS only as a deliberate test
Rockstar includes DNS changes among its possible diagnostics. DNS settings are different from port forwarding and from a console cache reset. Before changing DNS, record the existing settings so you can restore them. Use the platform-specific instructions and change only the DNS values those instructions call for. If the test makes no difference, restore the previous values rather than leaving an unhelpful configuration in place.
Do not treat a DNS change as a routine first step or as a guaranteed speed improvement. It is a later diagnostic after status, general connectivity and platform checks. Keep a note of the original values and the outcome; if you cannot confidently restore the previous configuration, do not guess at settings.
Xbox Series X|S: clear cache or alternate MAC address when indicated
Rockstar’s Xbox Series X|S troubleshooting instructions include clearing the console cache and clearing the alternate MAC address. These are Xbox-specific cleanup steps; they are not general GTA Online fixes and should not be applied to PlayStation or PC.
- Use Rockstar’s Xbox Series X|S connection procedure to locate the cache and alternate MAC address actions in the console menus. Menu labels or software presentation can change, so follow the current console-specific procedure rather than an unrelated platform’s instructions.
- Complete one indicated cleanup action at a time, following the console prompts. Avoid changing several unrelated network settings simultaneously; if the connection changes, you will otherwise have less information about which action mattered.
- Reconnect and test GTA Online after the console has completed the action. If the error remains, proceed to the Xbox-specific NAT and port checks rather than repeating resets indefinitely.
Rockstar’s Xbox One troubleshooting page is separate from its Series X|S page. For Xbox One, use its own instructions rather than assuming that the newer console’s menu sequence applies unchanged. Similarly, PlayStation and PC players should use their own connection guidance rather than looking for an equivalent cache step that Rockstar’s cited procedures do not identify for them.

Keep a short record of the platform, the exact error text, when it occurs, whether other online services work, the live status shown at the time, and which single diagnostic you tried. This makes it easier to describe the issue accurately if you contact Rockstar Support or your ISP. Include whether you were using Wi-Fi or Ethernet and whether an alternate network changed the result, if you performed that test.

- If other services also fail, resolve the general internet connection problem with your ISP or network provider.
- If only GTA Online fails on one network, use the matching platform’s NAT, port and connection guidance; if practical, compare with the brief alternate-network test for PC.
- If a change to DNS or router configuration makes the connection worse, restore the recorded prior setting before trying another diagnostic.
Rockstar’s listed guides were updated on different dates: the PC connection page on May 2, 2024; PlayStation 5 on July 5, 2024; Xbox One on January 7, 2025; Xbox Series X|S on September 18, 2025; and the PC Strict NAT guide on January 23, 2026. For menu instructions, rely on the current procedure for your platform, since console and router interfaces can change.

When contacting support, describe what you observed rather than presenting a guess as a confirmed cause. For example, say that other online services worked, that the status page showed the relevant platform as operational at the time, and that a wired test did or did not change the outcome. If the issue is broader than GTA Online, tell your ISP what other services or devices are affected. Clear observations help keep the next troubleshooting step focused.

Why can’t I join a GTA Online session?

Rule out a Rockstar outage first. If the service is operational, verify your internet connection, then check your platform’s NAT and router restrictions using the relevant Rockstar procedure. A timeout does not by itself prove that NAT or a specific port is responsible.

The Bottom Line
Check Rockstar’s live status and your general connection before changing settings. If services are up, follow the guide for your platform, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if practical, then investigate NAT and the correct game and platform ports. Use DNS, router restarts, alternate networks and Xbox cleanup steps only where they fit the symptom and platform; none is a guaranteed fix.
