First disable every GPU overclock and restore the card to its factory settings. Then check the card’s cooling, case dust and airflow before investigating drivers, monitoring utilities, power connections and other hardware. If overheating, crashes, hangs, TDRs, BSODs, WHEA hardware error events or visual artifacts continue at stock settings, the overclock is not the only plausible cause and the card needs a more systematic diagnosis.

Do not apply a universal temperature cutoff. Thermal limits, sensor names and normal readings vary by GPU model, firmware and workload. Use the exact card manufacturer’s documentation when deciding whether a reading is abnormal.

Start with a stock-settings baseline

An unstable core or memory overclock can produce several different symptoms: driver recoveries, application crashes, system hangs, blue screens, WHEA hardware error events, reboots and corrupted pixels or textures. None of those symptoms identifies the cause by itself. The useful first test is whether the machine becomes stable when all custom tuning is removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disable custom tuning. Remove manual core-clock, memory-clock, voltage, power-limit and fan-curve changes. Restore the vendor’s default profile rather than merely lowering one frequency.
  2. Use the card maker’s reset procedure if the tuning utility will not open. A failed profile can prevent normal operation, so follow the GPU manufacturer’s instructions for clearing or resetting tuning settings.
  3. Restart the computer and verify the reset. Check that no profile is automatically re-applied at login. Third-party overclocking and performance-monitoring tools can reload settings even after a vendor utility appears to be reset.
  4. Record what happens at stock. Note whether the problem occurs at idle, during a light 2D task, only in a particular game or application, or during a sustained GPU workload.

AMD identifies unstable overclocking and overheating as possible causes of instability and recommends testing a stock configuration. Its Radeon WattMan guidance says to return to the last stable settings after instability. Current AMD Adrenalin documentation also describes a stress-test feature that resets GPU tuning to defaults when the test crashes or reboots. Control names and availability vary by GPU, so use the labels shown by your installed driver.

Separate a temperature problem from a general stability problem

Compare the behavior under controlled conditions instead of assuming every crash is thermal. The following distinctions determine what to check next.

Observation at factory settings What it suggests Next check
Artifacts or a crash appear only during a long, demanding workload and disappear after the card cools Cooling, airflow or a workload-specific power issue is more likely, although the evidence is not conclusive Inspect fans, heatsink airflow, dust and the card’s documented sensors while repeating the same workload
The system fails during light use or on the desktop A temperature-only explanation is less likely Prioritize driver installation, background utilities, operating-system changes, power connections and hardware seating
The problem began immediately after a driver or utility update A software conflict or regression is possible Read the driver and application release notes, perform a clean driver installation and test without third-party tuning tools
Only one application fails while other GPU workloads remain stable An application-specific bug, setting or compatibility issue is possible Update that application, test its default graphics settings and compare with another workload at stock
Artifacts remain in several applications and at stock settings Memory, power delivery, cooling or another hardware fault becomes more plausible Check the card’s seating and power cables, then arrange professional inspection if basic checks do not help

This comparison is diagnostic, not a ranking of causes. AMD’s stability guidance also lists outdated or misconfigured BIOS settings, unsupported or faulty hardware, and operating-system or driver problems. A crash or artifact alone cannot establish which of these is responsible.

Inspect cooling, dust and case airflow

Overclocking increases the heat and power that the cooling system must remove. Return to stock before judging the cooler, because a card that is stable at factory settings but not with a custom profile may simply have exceeded the available thermal or electrical margin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the graphics card itself

  • Confirm that the GPU fans, heatsink and any auxiliary cooling hardware operate as described in the card’s manual. Some cards use a zero-RPM mode at low load, so a fan that is stopped on the desktop is not automatically defective.
  • Look for dust blocking the heatsink fins, fan blades or case filters. Clean according to the manufacturer’s instructions and avoid forcing a fan to spin freely with high-pressure air.
  • Make sure the card has clear space for its exhaust and intake. A card pressed against another expansion card or a blocked case panel can recirculate warm air.
  • Check the rest of the system’s intake and exhaust fans. GPU temperature is affected by the air entering the case, not just by the graphics-card cooler.

Use the correct temperature interpretation

GPU software may report several sensors, such as a core reading, a hotspot or junction reading, and a memory reading. Their limits and expected differences depend on the exact model and firmware. There is no defensible single number that is safe for every GPU. Use the card maker’s specifications and warnings, and compare readings under the same workload rather than comparing an idle value with a peak value.

What a dusting tool can and cannot do

A hand blower or PC electric air duster can help remove dust when used in accordance with the manufacturer’s cleaning guidance. It cannot correct an unstable tuning profile, a failed fan, a driver conflict, a loose power connector or a failing component. If cleaning changes nothing at stock settings, continue with software and hardware isolation instead of repeatedly blowing out the case.

Check BIOS, operating-system and hardware support

Cooling is only one part of stability. AMD’s troubleshooting guidance includes outdated or misconfigured BIOS settings, unsupported hardware and operating-system problems among possible causes. If a fault began after a motherboard, firmware or operating-system change, document that timeline and check the board and GPU makers’ support notes.

  • Check that the graphics card, power supply, motherboard and accessories meet the manufacturers’ compatibility requirements. A physically working system can still contain unsupported or marginal hardware.
  • Remove nonessential add-in cards and accessories during diagnosis. Simplifying the system can reveal whether another device, slot or driver is involved.
  • Do not infer permanent GPU damage merely because a problem appeared after overclocking. Stability at stock, repeatability across workloads and the results of physical checks provide stronger evidence.

Keep the exact model numbers, firmware versions and operating-system build in your notes. Similar-looking cards can expose different sensors, power connectors and tuning controls, so generic instructions may not apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Isolate drivers and background software

If the problem survives a stock reset and cooling inspection, treat software as a separate variable. Keep the configuration simple while testing.

Install or roll back the graphics driver methodically

  1. Check the graphics driver and the affected application for updates, and read their release notes for known crashes, hangs, TDRs or rendering defects.
  2. Perform a clean installation of the graphics driver using the procedure supplied for your GPU and operating system. A clean install removes configuration remnants that a normal upgrade can leave behind.
  3. If the issue started after a driver change and the current release has no fix, test a previously working driver version using the manufacturer’s supported rollback process.
  4. Restart and retest at factory settings before reinstalling optional tuning or overlay components.

Do not change the driver, game settings, overclock and monitoring software simultaneously. If several variables move at once, a successful or failed test does not reveal which change mattered.

Temporarily remove utility conflicts

Disable third-party overclocking, fan-control, overlay and performance-monitoring utilities while isolating the fault. Two programs can apply competing clocks, voltage requests or fan commands even when only one appears active. Leave the vendor’s default driver controls in place, reboot, and repeat the same workload. If stability returns, add utilities back one at a time to identify the conflict.

Verify power, slot placement and physical connections

A card that is stable on the desktop can still fail when a workload demands more power. AMD’s stability guidance recommends checking both placement and power delivery.

  1. Power down and follow the PC and card manuals. Disconnect power before opening the case and use the handling precautions specified for the hardware.
  2. Confirm the primary PCIe slot. The graphics card should be seated in the motherboard slot designated as the primary slot unless the board manual specifies another arrangement.
  3. Reseat the card if necessary. Check that the retention mechanism is engaged and that the card is fully inserted. Do not force a connector or bend the board.
  4. Check power leads. Connect the card directly to the power supply with the required connectors. Where the card requires more than one connector, use independent cables as recommended by the manufacturer rather than improvised splitters.
  5. Remove nonessential accessories for the test. Temporarily disconnect add-in hardware or peripherals that the troubleshooting guidance identifies as unsupported or suspect, then retest with the smallest practical configuration.

Use the manuals for your exact power supply, motherboard and GPU. A cable that fits physically is not proof that it is wired or rated correctly for the card. Inspect connectors for looseness or visible damage, but do not continue using a connector that is hot, discolored or otherwise unsafe; have it examined by a qualified technician.

Run repeatable tests and change one variable at a time

Systematic testing is more useful than repeatedly launching random games. Build a short, repeatable baseline:

  1. Boot with factory GPU settings and no third-party tuning utility running.
  2. Observe the system at idle long enough to establish whether artifacts or crashes occur without a heavy workload.
  3. Run the light application that previously failed, if there is one.
  4. Run the same demanding workload that exposed the problem, using the same scene, duration and graphics settings where practical.
  5. Record the symptom: application exit, driver recovery, hang, reboot, BSOD, WHEA hardware error event or a specific visual defect.
  6. After each physical or software change, repeat the same sequence. Do not combine cleaning, driver replacement and cable changes in one test if you need to know which action helped.

Record whether the fault appears immediately or only after a long session, whether lowering workload changes it, and whether the screen recovers or the entire system locks. Those observations help separate an application or driver failure from a system-wide power or hardware failure, but they still do not prove a diagnosis.

A stable result at stock is the control condition. Keep it available so you can return to a known-good state whenever a later change fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand artifacts and memory instability

Artifacts include flashing polygons, checkerboard patterns, colored blocks, texture corruption, missing geometry or persistent lines. They can result from an unstable memory clock, an unstable core, overheating, driver behavior or failing hardware. The visual pattern is a clue, not a diagnosis.

NVIDIA’s Ampere GA102 architecture whitepaper discusses Error Detection and Replay for GDDR6X memory and describes overclocking-related memory errors and artifacts in that architecture context. That discussion should not be generalized to every graphics card, memory type or artifact. If corruption appears only after increasing memory speed, remove that change first; if it remains at stock across multiple applications, investigate cooling, power, drivers and hardware instead of assuming the memory setting is still the cause.

Also note when the artifact appears. Corruption visible in the firmware screen or desktop before a game loads points away from a single game profile. A defect confined to one title may instead involve that application’s renderer or settings. Capture a photograph or screenshot when possible, and record whether a reboot clears it temporarily. Do not use a screenshot as proof that the physical display path is healthy; some display faults are not captured in software.

Reintroduce tuning only after the stock system is stable

Do not resume overclocking until the card passes your repeatable stock tests. When you do, treat every adjustment as an experiment:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Save the stable factory profile so it can be restored immediately.
  2. Change one control at a time: core, memory, voltage, power limit or fan behavior, never several together.
  3. Use a small, conservative increment and run a stability check after that single change.
  4. Watch for artifacts, hangs, driver recoveries, crashes, reboots or WHEA events, not just benchmark completion.
  5. At the first recurring symptom, return to the last known stable setting. Do not keep raising voltage or temperature to force a marginal profile to pass.

AMD’s guidance emphasizes returning to the last stable settings after instability. A stress-test pass is not a guarantee that every game or application will be stable, so test the software you actually use. Keep a written record of each change so you can reproduce or undo it.

When stock settings do not solve the problem

Continued overheating or artifacts at factory settings, after dust and airflow checks, clean driver testing and power-connection verification, warrants professional inspection. The guidance does not diagnose a particular reader’s card or prove permanent damage. A technician can check the cooler, fan operation, board, memory, power delivery and other components with the correct equipment.

Arrange inspection promptly when the same fault appears across several applications, during light use as well as heavy workloads, or after every driver and configuration change has been removed. Keep notes of the exact GPU model, driver version, workload, sensor names and observed symptoms; that record helps distinguish a repeatable hardware fault from a software-specific failure. If the machine shows smoke, a burning odor, visibly damaged connectors or a fan that will not operate, shut it down and stop testing until it has been inspected.

A practical decision checklist

  • Have all core, memory, voltage, power-limit and fan-profile changes been disabled?
  • Does the vendor utility remain reset after a reboot?
  • Were dust, heatsink clearance, fan operation and case airflow checked using the card maker’s instructions?
  • Were temperature readings interpreted against the exact model’s documentation rather than a universal cutoff?
  • Was the driver clean-installed or, when appropriate, rolled back to a known-working version?
  • Were third-party monitoring, overlay and overclocking utilities disabled during testing?
  • Was the motherboard BIOS checked for support and configuration problems?
  • Is the card fully seated in the primary PCIe slot?
  • Are the required power connectors attached directly with the recommended independent cables?
  • Were nonessential accessories removed while isolating the fault?
  • Was each change tested separately, with the last stable configuration preserved?
  • Does the symptom occur at idle, in one application, or across several workloads?

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do first after a GPU overclock causes crashes?

Disable all custom core, memory, voltage, power-limit and fan settings, restore the vendor’s factory profile and reboot. Confirm that no utility reapplies the overclock before testing anything else.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there one safe GPU temperature for every graphics card?

No. Sensor types, firmware and thermal limits differ by model. Use the exact card maker’s specifications and compare readings under the same workload instead of applying a universal cutoff.

Why does my GPU artifact even after I removed the overclock?

Artifacts can also come from cooling, dust, airflow, drivers, power delivery, seating or failing hardware. Test at stock across more than one application and continue with the cooling, driver and connection checks.

Should I clean the PC before reinstalling the driver?

Return to stock first, then inspect cooling and airflow. Cleaning can remove a thermal cause, but it will not fix a driver conflict or unstable tuning profile. Change one variable at a time so the result is meaningful.

Can a GPU driver update cause crashes or TDRs?

A driver problem or regression is possible, especially if symptoms began immediately after an update. Read release notes, perform a clean installation and, when the current release has no fix, test a previously working version through the manufacturer’s supported rollback process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need separate PCIe power cables?

Follow the GPU and power-supply manuals. When a card requires multiple connectors, AMD’s stability guidance recommends independent cables rather than improvised splitters, with the card connected directly to the power supply.

What if the GPU is stable in games but crashes on the desktop?

Desktop or light-use failures make a temperature-only explanation less likely. Prioritize driver installation, background utilities, operating-system changes, BIOS configuration, power connections and physical seating.

When should I stop troubleshooting and seek repair?

Seek professional inspection if overheating or artifacts continue at factory settings after basic cooling, driver, utility, seating and power checks, especially when the fault appears across several applications or during light use. Do not continue operating hardware with burning odors or visibly damaged connectors.

Can I resume overclocking after a successful stress test?

Only after repeatable stock tests are stable. Reintroduce one control at a time in small increments, test the applications you actually use and return to the last known stable setting at the first recurring artifact, hang, crash or WHEA event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Reset the GPU to factory settings first. Then inspect cooling and airflow, isolate drivers and third-party utilities, verify PCIe seating and direct power connections, and retest one change at a time. If the card still overheats, crashes or artifacts at stock settings, stop assuming the overclock is responsible and arrange a qualified hardware inspection.
