If your COROS watch records a poor GPS track or unreliable workout heart rate, start with setup: wait for GPS to acquire outdoors, let the signal settle, and make sure the watch fits securely with a clean, dry sensor against your skin. If problems persist, refresh satellite data, choose a GPS mode your model supports, and consider a compatible external heart-rate sensor when workout accuracy matters.

Fix GPS problems before and during an activity

A slow satellite fix, a wandering track, and a distance that differs from expectation can have different causes. Work through GPS setup first; the watch needs a clear satellite signal to record a dependable route. COROS’s troubleshooting guidance, updated September 28, 2026, recommends waiting for acquisition before starting and allowing an additional minute for the signal to settle. COROS GPS troubleshooting and its activity setup guidance describe the acquisition indicator and start-screen process.

1. Wait for a full GPS signal

  1. Go outdoors before starting the activity and give the watch an open view of the sky.
  2. On the activity start screen, wait until the GPS signal icon is solid/full or the display says “Acquired.” The exact display may vary by model.
  3. After acquisition, remain in place for another minute before starting. That extra settling time can help the watch establish a better signal.
  4. If acquisition is unusually slow, do not begin moving just to see whether it catches up. First check whether the satellite data is current, as described below.

Starting before the watch has acquired GPS can leave the beginning of a route missing or less reliable. A signal can also degrade after the activity starts if the route runs beneath heavy tree cover, between tall buildings, or near a large body of water where signal refraction can occur. These conditions may affect the recorded track, pace, or distance; changing a setting cannot guarantee a clean signal through an obstruction.

It helps to separate a slow fix from a poor track. If the watch takes a long time to show acquisition, check the satellite-data sync and wait in an open area. If it acquires normally but the route later wanders or the distance looks off, consider the surroundings along that section of the route. A mode with more satellite information may help in difficult reception, but buildings, trees, and signal effects near water can still interfere.

2. Pause when you go indoors

If your route enters a building, pause the activity while inside. COROS says the watch otherwise continues searching for GPS, which can affect the distance and recorded track. Resume after you are back outdoors and the watch can receive a signal. COROS’s GPS guidance covers this indoor-route case.

3. Refresh satellite data after a long gap or trip

Satellite data gives the watch information about when satellites are expected to be in position. When paired devices connect, the COROS app transfers data covering the prior seven days. If the watch has not synced for more than seven days, it may prompt you to update. Stale or missing satellite data can make acquisition take two minutes or longer, according to COROS.

  1. Open the COROS app and connect or sync the watch.
  2. Open Profile, select your device, and follow the app’s prompt or current satellite-data update control. Labels and placement can change between app versions.
  3. Keep the watch outside and in place while the update and GPS acquisition complete; do not start the activity partway through.

This is especially worth checking after travel or a period when the watch and app have not connected. The relevant issue is whether the satellite data is current, not simply whether the watch has GPS enabled. If a watch has been synced recently, this is less likely to be the explanation for a track that becomes inaccurate only in one particular area.

4. Pick a GPS mode suited to the route and watch

COROS recommends All Systems On for most situations on models that support it. It uses multiple satellite systems. Dual Frequency is intended for harder reception—such as dense urban areas, deep canyons, and heavily forested terrain—and consumes more battery. A standard or single-system GPS choice is primarily a battery-saving option and may be less accurate when signals are obstructed or refracted. See COROS’s GPS mode guide.

Mode When it may make sense Trade-off and caveat
All Systems On COROS’s recommended choice for most situations on supported watches. Availability depends on model; check the watch’s own settings.
Dual Frequency Challenging reception, including dense urban areas, deep canyons, and heavily forested terrain. Uses more battery and is available only on supported models.
Standard or single-system GPS When conserving battery is the priority. Can be less accurate where signals are obstructed or refracted; mode combinations vary among watches.

The practical choice is a balance between reception conditions and battery use, not a universal “best” setting. For a route with open sky and ordinary reception, start with All Systems On if your model offers it. For a route through a canyon, dense city streets, or heavy forest, Dual Frequency may be worth the added battery use if it is available. If a long outing makes battery conservation the priority, a standard or single-system option may be preferable, with the understanding that obstructed reception can make the track less accurate.

To change modes, use the GPS or satellite mode setting available on your specific watch; COROS menu paths and supported combinations vary by model. If the mode you expect is absent, consult the model-specific settings or the mode guide rather than assuming the watch is malfunctioning. After selecting a mode, still wait for acquisition before starting. Switching modes does not replace a clear view of the sky at the start or remove obstructions later in the route.

5. Understand what GPS accuracy figures do—and do not—promise

COROS states: “Under normal conditions with a strong signal, wearable GPS devices are accurate within 3 meters (10 feet) of your actual location.” That is COROS’s stated figure under those conditions, not a guarantee for every watch, route, or moment. Tall buildings, heavy tree cover, and refraction near large bodies of water can create discrepancies in a track, distance, or pace even when the device is operating normally. The figure and limitations are in the COROS troubleshooting article updated September 28, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That figure describes performance under normal conditions with a strong signal; it should not be read as a promise that every point on a recorded route will fall within 3 meters (10 feet). A single distance or pace discrepancy near an obstruction does not by itself establish that the watch has failed. Compare the conditions at the time and place where the track changed, and repeat the start procedure in an open-sky location before escalating.

If the app reports “AGPS verification failed”

If the satellite-data update fails with this message, COROS recommends trying the connection steps below in order. AGPS here refers to the satellite data the app transfers to the watch; the error is not, by itself, proof of a hardware fault.

  1. Disable any VPN on the phone, then retry.
  2. Switch the phone’s network from Wi-Fi to cellular, or from cellular to Wi-Fi, and retry.
  3. On iPhone, clear Safari history and website data, then try again.
  4. If those steps fail, restart the watch. If the error remains, sync the watch to the app before considering a reset.
  5. After syncing, the COROS article gives this reset path: System > More Settings > Reset > Reset All. It says this does not delete data saved in the COROS app/account.

Resetting is a later troubleshooting step, not the first response to a slow GPS fix. Follow the current in-app labels if they differ from the path shown in the support article. See COROS’s full GPS troubleshooting steps.

Fix inaccurate or missing wrist heart-rate readings

Wrist optical heart rate estimates pulse using light and sensors against the skin. It is convenient, but it is affected by contact, motion, temperature, moisture, and individual physiology. First correct how the watch sits and the conditions at the sensor; then decide whether wrist readings are adequate for your workout. COROS explains the causes in Why Heart Rate Data May Be Inaccurate and its guide to accurate heart-rate readings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Stabilize the fit and sensor contact

  • Wear the watch snugly enough that it does not slide during movement, but not so tight that it is uncomfortable or restricts circulation.
  • Try positioning it above the wrist bone, where the surface may be flatter. The best position can differ; COROS’s guidance does not establish one exact distance that suits everyone.
  • Clean and dry both the optical sensor and the skin beneath it. Sweat or water trapped under the watch can interfere with readings and allow the device to move.
  • If one wrist has a tattoo beneath the sensor, try the other wrist. Hair, skin characteristics, blood-vessel differences, and individual physiology may also affect the signal.

These steps address common contact problems. They cannot remove every source of variation: optical sensing depends on how light interacts with tissue and blood flow, which differs among people. COROS discusses individual variation; its guidance does not support predicting a person’s accuracy from skin tone alone.

For a useful check, put the watch on before the workout, adjust it so it stays still during arm movement, and check that the back sensor has clean, dry contact. If the reading changes when the watch slides or when moisture gathers under it, correct those conditions first rather than trying to interpret every fluctuation as a change in effort.

2. Prepare for cold-weather exercise

Cold can reduce blood flow at the wrist and weaken the optical signal. Warm your hands and warm up before judging the reading during a cold-weather workout. A watch that is secure and positioned well can still struggle to produce a stable reading when circulation at the measurement site is reduced. COROS’s accuracy guidance covers warming up and hand temperature.

3. Wait for a stable reading, especially before intervals

On the activity start screen, wait for the heart symbol or displayed heart-rate reading to stabilize before beginning. If you start before the optical reading settles, the opening portion of the workout may not reflect a stable measurement. For interval training, COROS recommends using the interval mode’s more responsive algorithm. This can help the watch respond to changing intensity, but it does not eliminate the physical limits of wrist sensing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This start-screen check is particularly useful before a session in which early readings affect pacing or training decisions. If the reading has not settled, give it more time and confirm that the watch is not loose or damp underneath. A stable start reading is a sensible setup step, not a guarantee that every later reading will match an external measurement.

4. Check for motion and cadence lock

If the displayed heart rate rises and falls in step with your running cadence, the sensor may be following repetitive arm movement rather than pulse—a problem often called cadence lock or crossover. Improve contact by making the fit snug and stable; COROS notes that a nylon band may reduce movement. Sweat or water under the watch can also contribute to sliding. Correct the fit and sensor conditions before treating a cadence-shaped trace as a precise heart-rate response.

Motion-related problems can be intermittent: the reading may look plausible at rest but become unreliable as your arm movement changes. If a snug, stable fit and dry contact do not solve the issue—or if your training depends on a dependable response during hard intervals—an external sensor is a reasonable next step rather than repeatedly tightening the watch.

When to use an external heart-rate sensor

Wrist sensing is convenient for everyday use, while a compatible chest strap is the better option when dependable workout readings matter. COROS describes wrist optical readings as estimates and says chest straps usually provide better accuracy than wrist-based solutions. It recommends ANT+ or Bluetooth chest straps or armbands for athletes following heart-rate-based training. The sources do not provide a universal quantified accuracy difference across all devices, people, and activities, so treat this as a practical choice rather than a guaranteed numerical improvement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Best fit Consideration
Watch’s wrist optical sensor Convenience and routine tracking without another device. Fit, movement, cold, moisture, tattoos, hair, and physiology can affect the reading.
Compatible external chest strap or armband Heart-rate-based training when more dependable workout readings are important. Check the protocol and compatibility for both the exact COROS watch model and sensor before purchase or pairing.

The trade-off is convenience versus a more dependable workout measurement: the wrist sensor is already on your watch and avoids another accessory, while a compatible strap or armband is an option when heart-rate data guides training. COROS’s guidance supports ANT+ or Bluetooth chest straps or armbands, but does not state that one sensor type is right for every wearer or activity. It also does not quantify a universal accuracy gain, so choose based on how important the readings are to your training rather than expecting a specific improvement.

Do not assume that every ANT+ or Bluetooth sensor will pair with every watch simply because the protocol name matches. Verify compatibility for the exact model and accessory. COROS’s guidance supports the use of compatible ANT+ or Bluetooth sensors, but does not establish compatibility for every product. See COROS’s heart-rate accuracy article and its explanation of inaccurate readings.

When to contact COROS support

Contact support if GPS trouble continues after satellite data is updated, acquisition is allowed to complete, and the available mode has been chosen for the conditions—or if heart-rate readings remain unreliable after you have checked fit, sensor cleanliness, temperature, and movement. Include the watch model and a clear description of what happens; this helps support assess the issue without assuming a general device defect.

In the COROS app, open Profile > Customer Support > Contact Support to submit GPS details. COROS also directs users with continued heart-rate issues to submit feedback through the app’s support flow. Menu labels may vary with app updates. The escalation routes are listed in the official GPS support guidance and heart-rate troubleshooting guidance.

Quick troubleshooting checklist

  • GPS slow to acquire: Go outside, wait for “Acquired” or a solid/full signal, allow another minute, and update satellite data if the watch has been offline from the app for more than seven days.
  • Track or distance looks wrong: Consider whether the route passed under trees, between tall buildings, or near water; use a supported mode suited to the conditions and pause indoors.
  • Heart rate is missing or erratic: Stabilize the fit above the wrist bone, clean and dry the sensor and skin, warm up if cold, and wait for the pre-workout reading to settle.
  • Heart rate mirrors running cadence: Improve fit stability and consider a compatible external sensor if training decisions depend on the reading.
  • Problems persist: Submit the details through the COROS app’s support flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my COROS GPS inaccurate?

A track can be affected by starting before the watch acquires GPS, stale satellite data, or reception conditions such as tall buildings, heavy tree cover, and refraction near large bodies of water. Start outdoors, wait for a full signal and another minute, and sync the watch with the COROS app if it has not connected for more than seven days. A GPS mode change cannot remove environmental obstructions.

How do I fix GPS issues on my COROS watch?

Wait outdoors until the activity screen shows “Acquired” or a solid/full signal, then allow another minute before starting. Keep satellite data current through the app, and select a supported GPS mode suited to your route. If you enter a building, pause the activity. For “AGPS verification failed,” try disabling a VPN, switching Wi-Fi and cellular, and, on iPhone, clearing Safari history and website data before considering a reset.

Why is my COROS heart-rate data inaccurate or missing?

A loose or damp fit, cold conditions, movement, tattoos beneath the sensor, hair, and individual physiology can affect wrist optical readings. Wear the watch snugly above the wrist bone without restricting circulation, clean and dry the sensor and skin, warm up when cold, and wait for the pre-workout reading to stabilize. If the trace follows running cadence, improve fit stability and consider an external sensor for training that depends on heart rate.

Is Dual Frequency GPS always more accurate than All Systems On?

COROS positions All Systems On as the recommended choice for most situations on supported watches, and Dual Frequency for difficult reception such as dense cities, deep canyons, and heavy forest. Dual Frequency uses more battery and is not available on every model. Check the settings and mode guidance for your specific watch; reception conditions still matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use a chest strap instead of the COROS wrist sensor?

The wrist sensor is convenient for routine tracking, while COROS says chest straps usually provide better accuracy than wrist-based solutions and recommends compatible ANT+ or Bluetooth straps or armbands for heart-rate-based training. Check compatibility with the exact watch and sensor before purchasing or pairing. COROS does not give a universal numerical accuracy difference for every person and activity.

The Bottom Line

For GPS, start outdoors only after acquisition, let the signal settle, keep satellite data current, and choose a mode your model supports. For heart rate, secure the watch above the wrist bone, keep the sensor clean and dry, and warm up in cold conditions. If readings remain unreliable or dependable workout heart rate is important, verify a compatible external sensor or contact COROS support.
