“Googlebook OS” is not an official Google product name. The Mac installer people usually mean is ChromeOS Flex. Most problems are solved by checking the exact Mac model for certification, recreating the USB installer correctly, selecting the USB or installed EFI entry from the Mac startup picker, and separating a temporary live test from a permanent installation. Google warns that ChromeOS Flex does not support most newer Mac models, and an unsuccessful full installation can still permanently destroy the Mac’s existing data.
Check whether the Mac is a suitable ChromeOS Flex target
Start with Google’s current ChromeOS Flex certified models list and the notes for your exact Mac model. Certification is model-specific: two Macs that look similar can have different graphics, firmware, storage, or wireless behavior. Google guarantees functionality only on certified models. A non-certified Mac may boot, but performance, hardware support, and stability are not guaranteed.
Google’s official wording is that “ChromeOS Flex does not support most of the newer Mac models.” Do not assume that a newer Mac is a better candidate. Verify the model identifier and year before downloading an image or changing the internal drive. If the exact Mac is absent from the certified list, treat every result as experimental rather than as a supported installation.

| Component | Google’s minimum or guidance | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Intel or AMD x86-64-bit compatible processor | The operating system requires the x86-64 platform; a Mac that does not use a compatible processor is outside these requirements. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | Less memory is below the stated requirement and can make testing or daily use unreliable. |
| Internal storage | 16 GB | The installer needs an internal destination larger than approximately 16 GB. |
| USB boot | The Mac must be able to boot from USB | A USB installer cannot help if firmware blocks external startup. |
| Firmware access | Full administrator access to BIOS or equivalent firmware settings | Some devices require changes to boot mode, boot order, or external-boot permissions. |
| Older components | Intel or AMD components from 2012 or earlier, and Nvidia components from 2014 or earlier, are not recommended or supported | These age limits come from Google’s guidance and are separate from certification. |
Meeting the processor, memory, storage, and USB requirements does not override the certified-model list. Use the list and its device notes as the deciding check, especially for graphics, wireless, and startup behavior.
Protect data before you test or install
Back up documents, photos, browser data, and anything else you cannot replace. Disconnect backup disks and other storage while installing so you cannot accidentally select the wrong drive. A full ChromeOS Flex installation replaces the current operating system and erases existing data, applications, and settings. Google’s warning is explicit: “Lost data is permanently unrecoverable, even if the installation is not successful.”
Keep the backup disconnected until installation is complete and the Mac has shut down. This is both a safety check and a way to make the destination list easier to read. If you cannot verify a complete backup, do not proceed to the permanent-install option.
If you are not ready to erase macOS, use the live-boot option first. Live boot is a trial environment, not a normal installed system: Google notes performance and storage limitations, and it does not provide automatic updates or management enrollment. It is for checking compatibility, not for judging the final installed speed or replacing a managed deployment.
Create a reliable ChromeOS Flex USB installer
Use Chromebook Recovery Utility
Google recommends Chromebook Recovery Utility, which runs in Chrome on macOS, Windows, or ChromeOS. Use a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating the installer erases that USB drive, so copy any files from it first. The only physical item directly required here is the 8 GB-or-larger flash drive; Google does not endorse a particular brand.
- Install and open Chromebook Recovery Utility in Chrome on a working computer.
- Choose Google ChromeOS Flex as the manufacturer.
- Choose ChromeOS Flex as the product.
- Insert the USB drive, select it in the utility, and start the write process.
- Wait for verification to finish, then eject the drive safely.
Check the selected removable disk carefully before confirming. The utility reformats the selected USB, so a mistaken selection can erase another removable drive. A larger-capacity drive is acceptable, but extra capacity does not guarantee that the Mac’s firmware will recognize it.
Google also documents downloading the ChromeOS Flex image and writing it with a disk-imaging utility. Use that route only if you understand image files, removable-drive selection, and safe ejection; choosing the wrong disk can erase another drive. For most people, Recovery Utility is the simpler and more repeatable route.
When the USB itself is the problem
Google notes that SanDisk and other manufacturers’ drives sometimes fail as ChromeOS Flex installers. If the Mac will not see or start the USB, recreate it with Chromebook Recovery Utility and try a different flash drive rather than repeatedly changing Mac settings. An 8 GB drive is the minimum; a larger drive is acceptable, but capacity alone does not guarantee compatibility.

Keep one known-good replacement drive available if you are troubleshooting. There is no supported-brand shortcut: a different model, a direct connection, and a fresh write are more useful tests than buying a particular named brand.
Decide between a live test and permanent installation
| Choice | What happens | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Try ChromeOS Flex first | Runs from the USB without replacing the internal operating system. You can check display, keyboard, trackpad, Wi-Fi, audio, camera, and other hardware. | Use this when model support is uncertain or you need to confirm that essential hardware works. |
| Install ChromeOS Flex | Replaces the existing operating system and erases data, applications, and settings on the internal drive. | Use only after a verified backup and a successful enough live test. |
During the live session, test the functions you actually need: screen output, keyboard, trackpad, wireless networking, speakers or headphones, microphone, camera, and any special input or connectivity hardware. A system that merely reaches the desktop has not demonstrated that every component works.
Live boot is useful for finding hardware problems before committing, but it is slower and has the limitations described above. It does not turn an uncertified Mac into a supported one. If a critical device fails in the live environment, stop and reassess instead of assuming installation will fix it.

Boot the Mac from the installer USB
- Shut the Mac down completely; do not merely close the lid or choose a sleep option.
- Insert the ChromeOS Flex installer directly into a USB port. Remove a hub or intermediary dongle while troubleshooting.
- Power on the Mac and immediately hold Option, the key next to Command.
- At the startup picker, select the USB installer. Device-specific certified-model notes take precedence if they describe a different key sequence or entry.
- Choose the option to try ChromeOS Flex before installing if you still need to test hardware.
If no external drive appears, do not keep holding the key after the picker has passed; shut down and repeat the sequence from a fully powered-off state. Check whether the exact model requires external USB boot to be enabled in firmware, and follow its model-specific instructions because setting names and behavior differ.
After a permanent installation, follow the on-screen erasure warning, allow the process to finish, and wait for the Mac to shut down. Remove the USB only after the device is fully off, then start it again. Leaving the installer attached can cause the Mac to boot from USB instead of the internal installation.
Fix a USB installer that is missing or will not start
The USB does not appear in the Option startup picker
- Recreate the installer with Chromebook Recovery Utility; an incomplete or corrupted write is common.
- Try another USB drive, especially if the current one is a model Google identifies as occasionally unreliable.
- Try another USB port. Remove adapters, hubs, and docks so the drive is connected directly.
- Confirm that external USB boot is allowed in firmware where that setting exists. Apple and other Mac firmware interfaces use different names and behaviors, so follow the instructions for the exact model.
- Test the installer on another compatible computer if possible. If it fails there too, the media is the likely fault; if it works elsewhere, investigate the Mac’s port or firmware.
Do not jump to an internal-drive reinstall while the USB is still unverified. A second drive and a second port provide a quick way to separate media failure from Mac firmware or connector failure.
Blank screen or blinking cursor while starting from USB
Google lists three broad possibilities: unsupported hardware, a corrupted installer, or a USB-port or dongle problem. Check the exact model against the certified list, recreate or replace the USB, and test a different direct port. Do not interpret a successful appearance of the ChromeOS Flex logo as proof that every Mac component is supported.

Fix “cannot find a valid destination” during installation
ChromeOS Flex excludes the USB installer itself and generally looks for internal storage rather than removable media. Google says a valid destination must be larger than approximately 16 GB. If the installer cannot find one:
- Confirm that the Mac has internal storage installed and that it is larger than 16 GB.
- Check the model’s device-specific installation notes for storage or firmware exceptions.
- Recreate the installer in case the media is damaged.
- Disconnect other external disks so the destination list is unambiguous.
- If the internal drive is absent, intermittently detected, or reporting errors, resolve the hardware problem before attempting another installation.
The USB is intentionally not a destination for the permanent installation. The installer is looking for usable internal storage, not simply any disk that is plugged in. A drive that meets the nominal size but is not detected consistently is not a safe target.
Google’s general troubleshooting guidance also discusses restoring firmware defaults and checking boot order. Those changes are model- and symptom-specific. Do not disable TPM or alter another security setting merely because it appears in a generic troubleshooting page; apply a change only when Google’s instructions match your Mac and the symptom you have.
Fix a Mac that installs ChromeOS Flex but shows a black screen
A black screen after a seemingly completed installation often means the Mac is not using the installed EFI entry as its default startup choice. Follow Google’s Mac-specific sequence:
- Remove the installer USB and open the Mac’s startup boot choices.
- Select EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex as the default startup option. In Google’s instructions, select the entry and use Control with a click, or highlight it with the keyboard and press Control-Enter.
- Restart and check whether the installed system now starts from the internal drive.
- If the screen remains blank, shut the Mac down and clear PRAM/NVRAM by holding Command-Option-P-R while powering it on. Google says to continue until two startup chimes. With a Windows keyboard, use Win-Alt-P-R.
- After the reset, expect settings such as brightness and volume to change and set them again if necessary.
Remove the USB before repeating the test; otherwise the Mac may keep selecting the installer and obscure whether the internal EFI entry is fixed. If the EFI entry is absent, return to the certified-model notes and verify that the installation actually completed and that internal storage is being detected.
Do not reset NVRAM on the older Apple models Google lists as exceptions: iMac 5,2 and MacBook 2,1, 3,1, and 4,1. If your Mac is one of those models, stop after selecting the correct EFI entry and consult the model-specific guidance instead.
Fix a ChromeOS Flex splash-screen stall
If ChromeOS Flex reaches its splash screen and stops, Google’s general device troubleshooting recommends resetting firmware defaults, checking the boot mode, and trying UEFI where the firmware offers it. Some devices install successfully only in Legacy mode, so changing modes without checking the model can make the problem worse.
- Confirm the Mac’s exact model and review its certified-model notes.
- Restore firmware defaults if the device guidance calls for it, then verify the resulting boot order.
- Try UEFI where it is available and specifically appropriate; do not assume UEFI is correct for every device.
- On hardware with switchable graphics, consider that graphics switching may be involved. This is general device guidance, not a Mac-specific diagnosis.
- Reinstall the latest Stable release with another USB drive if the installer or release appears corrupted.
These splash-screen steps come from Google’s broader device guidance and are not established as universal Mac remedies. If the certified-model page gives different instructions, use those instructions. Avoid changing several firmware options at once; otherwise you will not know which change affected the result.

Find the failing layer instead of changing random settings
ChromeOS Flex startup failures usually belong to one of four layers. Identify the layer first:
- Media layer: the installer was not written correctly or the drive is incompatible. Recreate it and try another USB.
- Port and connection layer: a particular USB port, hub, adapter, or dock prevents detection. Connect directly and test another port.
- Mac startup layer: the firmware does not allow external boot, or the wrong entry was selected in the Option picker. Check the model’s startup and firmware instructions.
- Internal-installation layer: storage is missing, too small, not detected, or the installed EFI entry is not the default. Verify internal storage and select EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex after installation.
This order matters. Reinstalling repeatedly will not fix a blocked external-boot setting, and changing NVRAM will not repair a corrupt USB image. One controlled change at a time makes it easier to identify whether the problem follows the drive, the port, or the Mac.

Stop troubleshooting and reassess if the model is not certified, essential hardware fails during live boot, the internal drive is not reliably detected, or you cannot verify a complete backup. Full installation is a replacement operation, not a harmless upgrade. If you need macOS or cannot accept permanent data loss, keep using the live environment only for testing and do not select the installation command.

Why is the USB missing from the Option menu?
Recreate the media, try another drive and direct USB port, remove hubs or dongles, and confirm that external USB boot is permitted for the exact Mac model. Testing the drive on another computer can show whether the media itself is defective.
Why does the installer say there is no valid destination?
ChromeOS Flex excludes the installer USB and generally requires internal storage larger than approximately 16 GB. Confirm that the internal drive is present and detected, disconnect other disks, and review model-specific notes.
What should I do if installation ends at a black screen?
Remove the USB, open startup choices, and set EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex as the default entry using Google’s Control-click or Control-Enter method. If needed, clear PRAM/NVRAM with Command-Option-P-R, except on iMac 5,2 and MacBook 2,1, 3,1, and 4,1, where Google warns against that reset.
Should I always switch to UEFI when the splash screen stalls?
No. Google’s general guidance says to try UEFI where appropriate, but some devices install only in Legacy mode. Follow the certified-model and symptom-specific instructions rather than changing modes automatically.
Does a successful live boot prove the Mac is fully supported?
No. Live boot can reveal working or failing hardware, but an uncertified model still has no guarantee of performance, functionality, or stability.
