Most “Gmail socket” failures on Ubuntu are not Gmail socket failures at all. They are either a local Postfix-to-Dovecot Unix-socket problem or a separate Gmail network, TLS, or credential problem. Dovecot should create /var/spool/postfix/private/auth; Postfix should use the queue-relative path private/auth. Once that socket is visible to the postfix service, SASL mechanisms are enabled, and the SMTP client uses the correct Gmail TLS and authentication method, the error can be isolated and fixed without weakening relay security.
First identify which connection is failing
There are two different authentication paths that are often mixed together:
- Local submission: an SMTP client connects to your Ubuntu server. Postfix asks Dovecot over a Unix socket to verify the login.
- Outbound Gmail submission: Postfix connects over TCP to
smtp.gmail.com. This path depends on DNS, routing, firewall egress, TLS, and Google’s authentication policy; it does not use the local Dovecot socket for the Gmail connection itself.
A log line mentioning private/auth, smtpd_sasl_path, “SASL per-connection initialization failed,” “permission denied,” or “no such file” points to the first path. A timeout while connecting to a Gmail hostname points to the second. Gmail reply codes such as 530, 534, 535, or 504 usually indicate TLS or authentication policy rather than Unix-file permissions.
| Evidence | Likely layer | What to inspect first |
|---|---|---|
private/auth missing or “no such file” |
Dovecot listener or path | Listener configuration, socket creation, and the Postfix queue directory |
“permission denied” opening private/auth |
Unix ownership/mode or directory traversal | Socket owner, group, mode, and every parent directory |
| “SASL per-connection initialization failed” | Postfix SASL setup, Dovecot socket, or chroot visibility | postconf, doveconf, socket visibility, and master.cf |
| Connection to a Gmail host times out | DNS, IPv4/IPv6, firewall, or provider egress | Name resolution and TCP reachability to the selected port |
530, 534, 535, or 504 from Gmail |
TLS mode, credentials, or Google policy | STARTTLS/SSL selection and the account’s allowed authentication method |
Install the services you actually need
On Ubuntu, install Postfix and Dovecot’s core authentication service. Add IMAP or POP packages only if this machine will provide those mailbox protocols; they are not required for SMTP AUTH alone.

Package and directive names can vary slightly between Ubuntu, Postfix, and Dovecot releases. The paths below are the conventional Ubuntu layout; always confirm the effective settings with postconf -n and doveconf -n.
Make Dovecot create the Postfix authentication socket
Configure the listener in 10-master.conf
Edit /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-master.conf. Inside the existing service auth { ... } block, add or correct a listener for Postfix:
service auth {
# Keep any other auth settings already present.
unix_listener /var/spool/postfix/private/auth {
mode = 0660
user = postfix
group = postfix
}
}
The absolute path matters to Dovecot: it must create the socket inside Postfix’s queue directory, normally /var/spool/postfix. The corresponding Postfix setting is deliberately relative and will be private/auth. Do not put the absolute Dovecot path into smtpd_sasl_path unless your Postfix documentation explicitly calls for a different setup.
Why the ownership and mode matter
Mode 0660 allows the socket owner and group to connect while denying access to unrelated users. A common documented arrangement is owner postfix, group postfix. The service account must also be able to traverse /var/spool/postfix and its private directory. A socket with the right mode is still unusable if a parent directory blocks traversal.

Enable the mechanisms your clients request
Edit /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-auth.conf and set:
auth_mechanisms = plain login
PLAIN and LOGIN are common requirements for traditional SMTP clients. They must be protected by TLS; enabling a mechanism does not make sending credentials over an unencrypted connection safe. If your deployment intentionally uses different mechanisms, make Postfix, Dovecot, and the client agree instead of enabling every possible method.
Check the effective result after editing:
sudo doveconf -n | grep -E 'auth_mechanisms|unix_listener|postfix/private/auth'
Point Postfix at Dovecot and preserve relay protection
Set the SASL parameters in main.cf
In /etc/postfix/main.cf, set the Dovecot SASL type, queue-relative socket path, and SMTP authentication switch:
smtpd_sasl_type = dovecot
smtpd_sasl_path = private/auth
smtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes
Postfix resolves private/auth relative to its queue directory. You can confirm that directory with:
postconf queue_directory smtpd_sasl_type smtpd_sasl_path smtpd_sasl_auth_enable
Keep unauthenticated relay blocked
Authentication is not a reason to turn off relay restrictions. Retain an equivalent of the following policy in main.cf, adapting it to any existing restrictions rather than blindly deleting them:
smtpd_recipient_restrictions =
permit_sasl_authenticated,
permit_mynetworks,
reject_unauth_destination
On newer Postfix configurations, relay controls may be expressed with newer restriction parameters. The required logic is the same: authenticated clients and explicitly trusted networks may relay, while unauthenticated destinations outside your local domains are rejected.
Check chroot visibility
Ubuntu’s Postfix service definitions can run the SMTP daemon in a chroot. A chroot changes what the daemon can see, so a socket that exists at /var/spool/postfix/private/auth on the host may still be invisible to a chrooted service if the path is not inside that service’s jail.

Inspect the SMTP service line in /etc/postfix/master.cf. The chroot column is commonly the fifth field in a line such as:
smtp inet n - y - - smtpd
For diagnosis, Ubuntu documentation describes temporarily changing the SMTP service’s chroot flag to n, then restarting Postfix. Make the smallest possible change, test again, and restore your intended hardened setting once you understand the cause. Do not leave a temporary security relaxation in place without evaluating its consequences.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Reload services and read the first relevant log line
Validate syntax before restarting:
sudo postfix check
sudo doveconf -n > /dev/null
Restart both services after changing listener or SASL settings:
sudo systemctl restart dovecot
sudo systemctl restart postfix
Then check their state and recent messages:
sudo systemctl status dovecot --no-pager
sudo systemctl status postfix --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u dovecot -u postfix -n 100 --no-pager
sudo tail -n 100 /var/log/mail.log
Some Ubuntu installations log mail through systemd only; use the journal when /var/log/mail.log is absent. Focus on the earliest socket or connection error in a transaction. Later “authentication failed” lines may merely be consequences of an initialization failure.
Prove that the socket exists and is usable
Check creation and metadata
sudo ls -l /var/spool/postfix/private/auth
sudo stat /var/spool/postfix/private/auth
sudo namei -l /var/spool/postfix/private/auth
The first command should show a Unix socket, normally with mode equivalent to srw-rw----, owner postfix, and group postfix. namei displays permissions on each parent directory, which catches traversal failures that a socket listing alone misses.
Test from the Postfix account
sudo -u postfix test -S /var/spool/postfix/private/auth && echo "socket exists"
sudo -u postfix test -r /var/spool/postfix/private/auth && echo "postfix can access socket path"
A successful file test does not complete an authentication exchange, but a failure immediately confirms a local permission or visibility problem. If the socket is absent, inspect Dovecot’s startup log and the spelling and nesting of the unix_listener block. If it appears and disappears, look for a Dovecot configuration error or a service restart that removes the old socket before failing to recreate it.

Compare effective Postfix and Dovecot paths
sudo postconf queue_directory smtpd_sasl_path
sudo doveconf -n | sed -n '/service auth {/,/}/p'
The concatenation of Postfix’s queue_directory and smtpd_sasl_path should resolve to the same socket Dovecot creates. A mismatch such as Dovecot using /var/spool/postfix/private/auth while Postfix is pointed at a different queue directory explains “no such file” errors even when both configurations look individually reasonable.
Verify SMTP capabilities with EHLO
Test the listener that clients actually use. For a submission service on port 587, negotiate STARTTLS:
openssl s_client -starttls smtp -connect 127.0.0.1:587 -crlf
For implicit TLS on port 465, use:
openssl s_client -connect 127.0.0.1:465 -crlf
After the TLS handshake, type:
EHLO test.example
A working authenticated submission service should advertise STARTTLS before TLS where applicable and AUTH LOGIN PLAIN (or the intentionally enabled mechanisms) after TLS. If AUTH is absent, check smtpd_sasl_auth_enable, the service-specific settings in master.cf, and whether the SMTP daemon can reach the Dovecot socket. If AUTH appears but login fails, the socket is probably reachable and the investigation should move to credentials, TLS policy, or the account backend.
Do not paste real passwords into a shared terminal or an unencrypted test session. The purpose of EHLO is to verify advertised capabilities, not to expose credentials.
Configure Gmail submission with the correct TLS mode
Use the right hostname and port
| Gmail endpoint | Security mode | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
smtp.gmail.com:587 |
Plain SMTP connection followed by STARTTLS | Submission clients that explicitly issue STARTTLS before AUTH |
smtp.gmail.com:465 |
Implicit SSL/TLS from the first byte | Clients configured for SSL-wrapped SMTP |
Do not configure port 587 as implicit SSL or port 465 as cleartext-plus-STARTTLS. A mode mismatch can look like a socket or authentication failure because the server never reaches a usable AUTH exchange.
Use an account-compatible authentication method
Use the full Gmail or Google Workspace account address as the username. Modern Google accounts may require OAuth, and password-based SMTP may require an app password where Google permits that method. Workspace administrators can also impose policies that disallow basic password authentication, require specific OAuth flows, or restrict SMTP access by organization.

504 5.7.40 XOAUTH is no longer supported |
The client is attempting an obsolete XOAUTH method. | Update the client or relay configuration to a supported OAuth mechanism. |
Separate Gmail network failures from local socket failures
When the log shows a timeout
A timeout to smtp.gmail.com is not fixed by changing Dovecot permissions. Check resolution and both IP families:
getent ahosts smtp.gmail.com
resolvectl query smtp.gmail.com
nc -vz -w 10 smtp.gmail.com 587
nc -vz -w 10 smtp.gmail.com 465
If IPv6 addresses resolve but the host has broken IPv6 routing, test IPv4 explicitly with your preferred network diagnostic tool or temporarily correct the IPv6 route. Check host and cloud-firewall egress rules, NAT, and whether the provider blocks outbound SMTP ports. Port 25 is commonly restricted by hosting providers; Gmail submission normally uses 587 or 465 instead.
When TLS negotiation fails
Use the matching OpenSSL test against the remote endpoint:
openssl s_client -starttls smtp -connect smtp.gmail.com:587 -crlf
openssl s_client -connect smtp.gmail.com:465 -crlf
Certificate errors, an incomplete handshake, or an immediate disconnect indicate a TLS or network-path issue. A successful handshake followed by a Gmail 530 or 535 moves the problem into SMTP sequencing or account authentication.
When the local socket is healthy but outbound relay still fails
Dovecot’s private/auth socket authenticates clients to your Postfix server. It does not authenticate Postfix to Gmail. If a locally submitted message is accepted but Postfix later cannot relay it through Gmail, inspect the relayhost, remote TLS policy, stored OAuth or app-password credentials, and the deferred queue log entry separately.
Send one controlled test message
After EHLO advertises AUTH and the intended TLS mode works, send a single test message to an address you control. Use the same listener, username format, and authentication method as the real client. Then inspect the queue and logs:
mailq
sudo postqueue -p
sudo tail -n 100 /var/log/mail.log
sudo journalctl -u postfix -n 100 --no-pager
An authenticated local submission should show a queue ID, a recipient transaction, and either a delivery result or a clear deferred reason. If the message remains deferred, follow that queue ID through the log instead of repeatedly sending test mail. Remove the test message with the normal Postfix queue-management procedure once the diagnosis is complete.
Clean up diagnostic changes and protect the service
- Restore any temporary
master.cfchroot change after testing, unless you have deliberately redesigned the service’s jail. - Turn off temporary verbose or authentication-debug settings. They can produce very large logs and may expose sensitive protocol details.
- Keep TLS required before password-based mechanisms. Never “fix” a 530 STARTTLS response by allowing cleartext AUTH.
- Retain
reject_unauth_destinationor an equivalent modern relay restriction to prevent an open relay. - Use a dedicated service credential or OAuth token where possible, and rotate any app password that was exposed during troubleshooting.
- Limit testing to accounts and recipients you control; repeated failed attempts can trigger account security controls or provider rate limits.
Understand Gmail sending limits separately from socket repair
Google’s current guidance lists service limits such as 2,000 messages per day for a Google Workspace user and 10,000 recipients per user per day for SMTP relay. These are account or service quotas, not measurements of socket performance and not evidence that a Unix-socket repair succeeded. A correctly configured socket can still be followed by a quota rejection, and a quota-eligible account can still fail because TLS or credentials are wrong.
Quick Recap
End-to-end checklist
- Classify the error as local socket, network reachability, TLS negotiation, or Gmail authentication.
- Confirm Dovecot listens on
/var/spool/postfix/private/authwith mode0660, ownerpostfix, and grouppostfix. - Confirm Postfix uses
smtpd_sasl_type = dovecot,smtpd_sasl_path = private/auth, andsmtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes. - Ensure Dovecot enables the mechanisms the client needs, commonly
plain login, and that TLS is mandatory before them. - Check parent-directory permissions and whether the SMTP service chroot can see the socket.
- Restart or reload both services, then read
systemctl, journal, and mail-log output. - Use EHLO over the correct local listener and verify that AUTH is advertised after TLS.
- For Gmail, use
smtp.gmail.comwith 587/STARTTLS or 465/implicit TLS, the full account address, and OAuth or an eligible app password. - Run one controlled authenticated send and trace its queue ID.
- Remove temporary debugging and restore hardened service settings.
