If Gmail’s Help me write option is missing, first verify the account type, eligible Google AI or Google Workspace plan, country, language, and device. If the option appears but cannot be selected or email generation fails, Google’s documented first actions are to try again later, reload Gmail in a computer browser, or close and reopen the Gmail app on Android or iOS. The control is also in different places on desktop and mobile, so checking the correct compose view matters.
What a missing or broken Help me write control usually means
Help me write is Gmail’s Gemini-powered feature for creating a new email draft and refining text that is already in a draft. A missing button does not automatically mean that Gmail is damaged. Availability depends on the Google account, subscription or Workspace edition, country, language, platform, and the current rollout.
There are two different problems to separate:
- Missing: You open a compose window or reply and cannot find the Help me write control at all.
- Not working: The control is visible, but it cannot be selected, the prompt will not submit, or Gmail fails to produce a draft.
Use the eligibility checks before reinstalling anything. Google’s public guidance does not promise that the basic recovery steps will solve every account-specific problem, and it does not publish a universal failure rate or a guaranteed time for an outage to end.
Check whether your account and device are eligible
Google’s availability information distinguishes personal Gmail from managed Google Workspace accounts and from accounts with Google AI plans. The exact list of eligible editions and the countries in a rollout can change, so treat the following as a current diagnostic framework rather than a permanent guarantee.

Availability is subject to Google’s rollout and regional rules. If the account recently changed plans, moved countries, or is managed by an organization, allow for the possibility that access has not been granted to that specific account yet.
Identify the account before changing settings
Look at the address currently signed in to Gmail. A personal address and a work or school address can have different entitlements even on the same phone or browser. If several Google accounts are open, switch to the account that owns the mailbox where you expect Help me write to appear, then open a fresh compose window.
Check the account’s plan or Workspace edition
For a personal account, determine whether it is using an eligible Google AI plan. If it has no paid plan, the current Google availability guidance limits access to the United States. For a work or school account, ask the administrator which Workspace edition is assigned and whether Gemini features are available to the organization. A user cannot repair an edition or administrator restriction from the compose window.

Country eligibility and language eligibility are separate tests. An account can be in a supported country but use a device language that is not listed for the feature. Check the language configured on the phone or computer, and compare it with Google’s current Help me write availability list. Changing language may require reopening Gmail before the control is shown, but Google’s documentation does not guarantee an immediate rollout after a language change.

Find Help me write in the correct place
On a computer
- Open Gmail in the browser and sign in to the eligible account.
- Click Compose, open an existing draft, or open a message and choose the reply action.
- Inspect the bottom area of the compose window. Google places the Help me write prompt bar there when it is available.
- If the prompt bar is not visible, look for and click the Help me write control in the compose window. The control opens the prompt area where you describe the email you want drafted or the change you want made.
Checking only the inbox or a message-reading view can make the feature appear to be missing. It is a compose, reply, and draft function, not a general Gmail toolbar command.
On Android or iOS
- Open the Gmail app on the phone or tablet and select the eligible account.
- Tap Compose, or open a message and start a reply.
- Look inside that compose window for Help me write. Google documents mobile flows for creating a draft and refining text already in the draft.
- If the control is not in the compose view, finish the eligibility checks before assuming the app installation is defective.
The mobile control is not required to appear in the same position as the desktop prompt bar. Compare the app’s compose window with Google’s mobile instructions rather than searching the desktop layout on a phone.
Follow this troubleshooting sequence
Work through the checks in order. Each step rules out a different cause and avoids wasting time on reinstalling an app when the account is simply not eligible.
1. Confirm the account category
Decide whether the mailbox is personal Gmail or a managed work or school account. If the account is managed, note the organization and contact the administrator later if the feature remains absent. Do not use the behavior of a different Google account as proof that this one should have access.

2. Verify plan and regional access
For personal Gmail without a paid plan, compare your country with Google’s current availability statement, which currently lists the United States for that situation. For a personal account with an eligible Google AI plan, or for an eligible Workspace account, verify that the plan or edition actually covers the feature. Plan names and regional availability can change, so consult the current Google account and Workspace information for the account in question.
3. Verify the language and platform
Check the computer or phone language against the currently supported list: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Then confirm that you are testing on a documented platform: Gmail on the web, the Gmail app for Android, or the Gmail app for iOS. If the account is eligible but the device language is outside that list, eligibility is not established.
4. Open the right compose state
On a computer, use Compose, a reply, or an existing draft and inspect the bottom of that compose window. On mobile, use Compose or a reply and inspect the compose window itself. This step catches the common mistake of looking for Help me write in the inbox, message list, or reading pane.
5. Retry if the button is visible but cannot be selected
Google specifically warns that the Help me write button can sometimes be temporarily non-selectable. Its mobile troubleshooting instruction says: “Sometimes, you may not be able to select the Help me write button. When this happens, try again later.” Close the compose window if necessary, wait, and try the feature again rather than repeatedly tapping a disabled control.

6. Reload Gmail on a computer
If the control is present but the prompt does not open or generation fails, reload Gmail in the browser and sign in again if prompted. Return to a new compose window after the reload. A reload is Google’s documented computer recovery action; it is different from changing the account plan or language.
7. Close and reopen Gmail on Android or iOS
On mobile, close the Gmail app completely and reopen it, then return to Compose or a reply. Google documents reopening the app as the mobile counterpart to reloading Gmail on a computer. If the control remains unavailable after reopening, continue with the account, language, and administrator checks instead of assuming that repeated restarts will add eligibility.
8. Test a new draft and an existing draft separately
Help me write supports both creating new email text and refining existing text. Try a fresh Compose window first, then try an existing draft with text in it. If one flow works and the other does not, record which flow failed when you contact support. The distinction helps separate a compose-state problem from a broader account or service issue.

9. Ask an administrator about managed accounts
For a work or school mailbox, contact the Google Workspace administrator if the feature is absent after the basic checks. Access can depend on the organization’s edition and settings. An administrator can confirm whether the account is covered and whether Gemini features are enabled for the organization. A regular user generally cannot override those controls from Gmail.

10. Use Gmail Help for an account-specific case
If an eligible account still lacks the control, or generation continues to fail after reloading or reopening, use Gmail Help while signed in to that account. Google’s public instructions explain the first checks but do not identify the cause of every individual account problem. Include the account type, plan or Workspace edition, country, device, language, the compose path you tested, and whether the control was missing, disabled, or failed during generation.

What not to assume
- A normal Gmail inbox does not prove Help me write eligibility. Gmail access and Gemini feature access are separate.
- A missing button is not automatically an installation failure. Country, account plan, Workspace administration, language, and rollout status can all affect availability.
- A button that appears is not guaranteed to work continuously. Google documents temporary cases where it cannot be selected.
- Changing language or restarting is not a guaranteed fix. These checks can expose a compatibility issue, while the actual account rollout or service condition may still require support.
- There is no published universal repair time. Google’s public guidance does not state how long a Help me write failure should last or what percentage of attempts each step resolves.
Review every generated draft before sending
Help me write produces suggestions, not a final authority. Google cautions that generated text can be inaccurate or inappropriate. Read the entire draft, verify names, dates, amounts, attachments, promises, tone, and technical details, and edit it before sending. The feature’s availability or successful generation does not remove the sender’s responsibility to check the message.
When the documented steps have not solved it
At that point, classify the remaining problem as either eligibility or account-specific service behavior. Eligibility questions belong with the plan owner or Workspace administrator: confirm the edition, organization settings, country, and supported language. Service or account-specific behavior belongs with Gmail Help. Give support a reproducible description rather than only saying that Gemini is broken:

- Whether you tested Compose, a reply, and an existing draft.
- Whether reloading the browser or reopening the app changed the result.
This information lets the administrator or support team distinguish a missing entitlement from a temporary non-selectability problem without treating all failures as the same.
