If GitHub Copilot in a JetBrains IDE says it “Could not reach GitHub to verify the selected account,” the message does not prove that your internet connection or GitHub is down. One documented JetBrains incident was traced to local Copilot authentication data; update the plugin first, then consider a reversible reset of its authentication database only if your symptoms match that case.
What this sign-in error does—and doesn’t—tell you
The message has appeared during GitHub Copilot sign-in from JetBrains IDEs. In a June 2026 report, users also saw OAuth code-flow or device-flow errors, error code -32603, or Copilot stuck at “Initializing Copilot…”. That incident was attributed to corrupted local Copilot configuration data. Those additional symptoms are clues from that specific report, not requirements for every occurrence. A network-wide problem is not the only explanation. In an August 2026 Rider report, the user said curl https://api.github.com succeeded and Copilot worked in VS Code on the same machine and network, while Rider still showed the sign-in error. The report did not establish the cause or a fix. A successful API request or another working editor can point toward an IDE-specific problem, but it cannot diagnose one by itself. Rider report

- In your JetBrains IDE, open the plugin manager (usually Settings/Preferences → Plugins) and find GitHub Copilot.
- Install the latest stable version offered for your IDE, then restart the IDE.
- Try signing in again.
A maintainer said a hotfix was deployed on June 19, 2026, and the issue identified version 1.11.2-251 as a stable version to install at that time. That is historical information, not a recommendation to install that version now; use the current stable release available in your IDE. When to reset Copilot’s local authentication database
If updating does not help and the failure resembles the documented JetBrains authentication-database incident, move the Copilot database files aside so the plugin can create fresh local authentication data. This is a targeted workaround, not a universal fix for every version or IDE reporting the same message.
- Close every IDE or editor that uses Copilot. An open IDE can keep the database files locked.
- Open the Copilot configuration directory for your system:
- Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%github-copilot - macOS or Linux:
~/.config/github-copilot, or$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/github-copilotif that environment variable is in use
- Windows:
- Move these files, if present, to a backup folder outside the configuration directory:
auth.db,auth.db-wal, andauth.db-shm. Do not remove unrelated IDE caches or credentials. - Reopen the IDE and sign in to GitHub Copilot again.
The reported workaround says you can undo the change by closing the IDE and moving the backed-up files back. Follow the same close-all-editors precaution before restoring them. Documented database workaround

Use diagnostics to decide what to report next
If you are unsure whether your case matches the database incident, note what happens in the affected IDE and compare it with another client or a basic GitHub API request. Treat the results as clues, not proof of a root cause. A GitHub Community post from August 17, 2026 repeats the exact error during an IntelliJ Copilot login attempt but offers no technical answer. The June issue also lists these log or error markers: OAuth code flow error, signInWithCodeFlow, signInWithDeviceFlow, -32603, EditorFetcher JSON-RPC errors, and TypeError [ERR_INVALID_CHAR]: Invalid character in header content ["Authorization"] in idea.log. Their presence may help identify a similar incident; their absence does not rule it out.

If the targeted reset does not apply or does not resolve the problem, the cited reports do not establish a general next fix. When seeking support, include the IDE and operating system, Copilot plugin version, exact error and relevant log messages, and whether GitHub API access or Copilot in another editor works on the same machine. The Rider report illustrates why those comparisons are useful but not conclusive.
