If a public Ghost site sends you to http://localhost:2368, Ghost is advertising its internal development address instead of the address readers should use. In production, set Ghost’s canonical url to the complete public scheme and hostname, restart Ghost, and leave port 2368 only as the private upstream between Ghost and your reverse proxy. If the redirect continues, check that the proxy preserves the original Host and protocol, especially X-Forwarded-Proto: https after TLS termination.
What the localhost:2368 redirect means
Ghost has two different addresses in a typical deployment:

- Public URL: the address visitors type, such as
https://example.com. Ghost uses this value for canonical links, redirects, admin links and generated URLs. - Internal listener: the local service address, commonly
http://127.0.0.1:2368. A reverse proxy connects to this address while the outside world connects to the proxy.
The production url setting must contain the first address, not the second. Ghost’s configuration reference describes it as the public URL for the blog. A browser reaching localhost:2368 is therefore usually seeing a development URL left in production configuration, a proxy that supplied the wrong host or protocol, or an intentionally local development setup.
Use this order to fix it
- Write down the exact public address readers should use, including
httporhttpsand the hostname. - Set Ghost’s production
urlto that address using Ghost CLI, the active production configuration file, or the Docker environment. - Keep Ghost listening internally on
127.0.0.1:2368(or the container’s port) and configure the proxy to forward the public host and protocol. - Restart the Ghost process after changing configuration.
- Test the public hostname with a private browser window or
curl -I, so an old cached redirect does not mislead you.
Set Ghost’s canonical public URL
With Ghost CLI
From the Ghost installation, set the URL to the address that should appear in readers’ browsers:

ghost config url https://example.com
ghost restartReplace https://example.com with your real public scheme and hostname. Do not use http://localhost:2368, http://127.0.0.1:2368, a Docker service name or a private IP as this value. The port belongs in the upstream connection, not in the canonical public URL, unless your readers genuinely access the site on that port.
The restart is part of the change. A configuration file can contain the correct value while a running Ghost process continues using its previous value until it is restarted.
With a manual installation
Open the production configuration file that the running service actually loads and set the equivalent url value:

}Keep the rest of the existing production configuration intact. The exact file path varies with the installation layout, so changing an unused example file will have no effect. Restart the service after saving the file, then test the public hostname rather than the local port.

With Docker
Set the container’s url environment variable to the externally reachable address:
url=https://example.comThe container can still listen on port 2368. A mapping such as 8080:2368 only controls how the host reaches the container; it does not tell Ghost what canonical URL to publish. If a proxy or load balancer presents https://example.com to visitors, that is the value Ghost should advertise, regardless of the internal service name or published port.
After changing the environment, recreate or restart the container using the method used by your deployment. Verify that the new container received the variable; editing a host shell variable without applying it to the running container does not change Ghost.
Configure the reverse proxy correctly
A proxy is expected to terminate TLS (if it handles HTTPS) and pass requests to Ghost’s internal HTTP listener. The proxy must preserve the public host and tell Ghost which protocol the visitor used. An official nginx pattern is:

Hostcarries the public hostname. If it is replaced withlocalhost, Ghost can generate localhost links or redirects.X-Forwarded-Protocarries the original scheme. Without it, Ghost may see an HTTP connection from nginx even though the visitor used HTTPS.X-Forwarded-Forpreserves the visitor’s address through the proxy chain.X-Real-IPprovides the direct client address in setups that use it.proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:2368identifies Ghost’s private upstream. It does not make that private address public.
If TLS is terminated by a load balancer before nginx, $scheme at nginx may be http even though the original request was HTTPS. Ensure the final request reaching Ghost has X-Forwarded-Proto: https. Otherwise Ghost can believe the request is insecure, redirect to an HTTPS URL, receive another HTTP-looking request from the proxy, and repeat indefinitely.
Proxy checklist for nginx, Caddy, Traefik or another gateway
- The public
Hostreaches Ghost unchanged. - The original protocol is preserved as HTTPS when TLS was terminated upstream.
- The proxy forwards to Ghost’s internal address and port, normally
127.0.0.1:2368for a host installation. - The proxy configuration is reloaded after edits.
- Only one component is responsible for the public HTTP-to-HTTPS policy; conflicting rules can create loops.
The exact directive names differ between proxy products, but the required information is the same: public host, original protocol and a reachable Ghost upstream.

In a local development environment, http://localhost:2368 can be the correct URL. Ghost’s development guidance notes that links continue to use that address until a forwarding URL is placed in the local configuration and the environment is restarted. A tunnel or temporary forwarding service therefore needs two coordinated settings:
- The forwarding service must expose a public hostname and route it to the local Ghost process.
- Ghost’s local configuration must use that forwarding URL while the tunnel is active, followed by an environment restart.
Do not copy a temporary tunnel hostname into a permanent production configuration unless you intend to keep using it. Conversely, do not “fix” a deliberate local-only installation by pointing it at a public domain that is not routed to the machine.

Verify the change without being fooled by a cached redirect
Check headers with curl
Request the public hostname and inspect the first response:
curl -I https://example.comA redirect response will show its destination in the Location header. If that header still contains localhost:2368, the running Ghost configuration or a proxy layer is still producing the old address. If the public URL is correct but a browser continues to jump to localhost, test in a private window and clear site data for the domain; browsers can retain permanent (301) redirects.

- From the server, confirm Ghost is reachable on its internal listener at
127.0.0.1:2368(or the container network address). - From an external client, request the public HTTPS hostname.
- Compare the public response’s
Locationheader with the configuredurl. - If the public request loops between HTTP and HTTPS, inspect the forwarded protocol at the proxy boundary.
This separates a Ghost configuration problem from DNS, firewall, proxy and browser-cache problems. The internal listener can work perfectly while the public request is still misidentified by the proxy.
Diagnose the most common failure patterns

Details that prevent the problem from returning
Use one canonical public address
Decide whether the site uses a particular hostname and HTTPS, then use that exact combination in Ghost, DNS, the proxy and any upstream load balancer. Treat alternate hostnames as deliberate redirects at the edge rather than allowing several layers to disagree about the canonical address.

Keep private ports private
Port 2368 is useful as the Ghost upstream. It does not need to be exposed to the internet when nginx or another gateway is serving the public site. Separating the public URL from the internal listener also means changing a host-side port mapping does not require changing Ghost’s canonical address.
Restart the layer you changed
Changing Ghost configuration requires a Ghost restart; changing a proxy requires its configuration reload; changing Docker environment variables generally requires restarting or recreating the container. Restarting only one layer can leave an old value active in another.

Check the first redirect, not just the final page
Browsers hide intermediate redirects. The first Location header identifies which layer supplied the wrong destination. A localhost destination points to canonical URL or host forwarding; an HTTP/HTTPS cycle points to protocol forwarding; a correct response in curl but not in one browser points to cached browser state.

- If Ghost’s internal listener is unavailable, fix the Ghost process, container networking or firewall before changing the public URL.
- If DNS points the hostname to the wrong server, correct DNS or the load balancer route; Ghost cannot compensate for traffic arriving elsewhere.
