First check whether you’re using the Gemini app for Windows or the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com. They’re separate ways to access Gemini, and a browser fix may not fix a problem with the Windows app. For the Windows app, check Google’s stated PC requirements, your internet connection, and any in-app update notice. For sign-in problems, check whether your Google Account is eligible and, for work or school accounts, whether the service is enabled for you.
Use the exact route and symptom to choose a check: an app that never opens, an app that opens but stops responding, a rejected sign-in, and a web page showing “Something went wrong” are not interchangeable problems. The checks below follow Google’s Gemini Apps Help guidance, checked October 13, 2026, and distinguish what Google documents from what it does not specify.
Identify which Gemini experience is failing
Google documents two routes on a Windows PC: the Gemini app for Windows and the Gemini web app, which you use in a browser. Start by noting exactly what you launched. If you visit gemini.google.com, you’re troubleshooting the web app. If you launch Gemini as a Windows app, use the app-specific checks below. Gemini in Chrome is a further browser feature; its troubleshooting guidance applies to that feature, not automatically to the Windows app.

| What you’re using | What to check first | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini app for Windows | Windows version, memory, available disk space, internet connection, and an update notice in the app | Google lists PC requirements for this app. Browser-specific instructions do not establish a fix for it. |
| Gemini web app | Supported browser, internet connection, and account eligibility | A “Something went wrong” message can indicate that your account cannot access the web app at that moment. |
| Gemini in Chrome | Chrome version, supported language and organization settings, page reload, and possible VPN or virtualized-environment restrictions | These are checks for the Chrome feature, not a general repair procedure for every Gemini app. |
The distinction matters when one route works and another does not. If the web app loads but the Windows app will not, that points you toward app requirements or an app-specific issue; it does not prove that the app is working correctly. If the Windows app opens but the web app rejects sign-in, investigate web access and account eligibility rather than treating the app’s installation as the cause.

Before troubleshooting, write down the route, the point of failure, and the message on screen. For example, “the app window never appears” is different from “the app opens and asks me to sign in,” while “the web app displays ‘Something went wrong’” is a specific web-access message. If you switch routes during testing, keep track of which account you selected in each one. This simple separation prevents applying Chrome-only advice to the desktop app or interpreting a web eligibility message as evidence of a Windows installation problem.
If the Gemini Windows app won’t open or respond
Google’s Windows-app help documents requirements, setup, an update action, and a keyboard shortcut. It does not provide a symptom-by-symptom repair sequence for every case where the app fails to open or stops responding. Use the checks below to rule out the documented prerequisites and identify what kind of failure you have; none is a guaranteed fix for an otherwise unexplained app failure.
1. Check the PC requirements
Google lists these requirements for the Gemini app for Windows: Windows 10 or later, at least 8 GB of RAM, 200 MB of available disk space, and a stable internet connection. These are product requirements, not a promise that meeting them will resolve a launch or responsiveness problem.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the PC is running Windows 10 or a later version.
- Check that the PC has 8 GB of RAM or more.
- Check that at least 200 MB of disk space is available.
- Confirm the PC can maintain a stable internet connection.
If a requirement is not met, address that constraint before treating the problem as a sign-in or browser issue. If all four are met and the app still fails, the documented requirements alone do not explain the cause.
These figures apply to the Gemini app for Windows, not to every way of visiting Gemini. The stated 200 MB figure is available disk space, not a recommendation to buy or upgrade storage, and 8 GB is the listed minimum rather than a prediction of performance on every PC. A computer meeting the listed baseline has passed a prerequisite check; it has not necessarily ruled out connection, account, or app-specific trouble.
2. Look for an update notice
If the Windows app displays a notice that an update is available, Google’s instruction is to click Restart. That restarts Gemini and installs the update. This step applies when the app presents that notice; it is not a general repair command for an app that never opens.
If the notice is visible, follow its wording and allow the app to restart. If no notice appears, do not treat the absence of an update prompt as proof that the app is current or outdated; Google’s documented instruction is conditional on the notice being shown. Likewise, if the app cannot launch far enough to display it, this particular update step may not be available to you.

3. Separate launch failure from a frozen session
Note what happens when you try to use the app: whether no window appears, a window appears but sign-in fails, or an open session does not respond. Also note whether you can access the Gemini web app in a browser. These observations help distinguish an app-launch problem from a broader connection or access problem, but Google’s published Windows-app guidance does not specify a separate fix for each symptom.
Google documents Alt + Space as the Windows app’s quick-access shortcut. You can use it as another way to invoke the app if that is how you normally access it. A shortcut that does nothing does not, by itself, identify the cause of a launch failure.
When recording a frozen session, note whether the app became unresponsive before or after sign-in and whether you saw an update notice. Those details do not diagnose the cause on their own, but they keep the issue description precise. Avoid calling a sign-in rejection a freeze if the interface is still responding and displaying an access message; account eligibility is a separate path to check.
4. Use the web app as a separate diagnostic check
Try the Gemini web app in a supported browser. If it works while the Windows app does not, you have a usable alternative and evidence that the two routes are behaving differently. If neither route works, check the account, internet connection, and any access message rather than assuming the Windows installation is the only issue. Success in one route is a comparison point, not proof of the root cause in the other.

A different account can have different eligibility, particularly when one is a personal account and the other is managed by work or school. A web app that works is useful if you need access while you investigate the Windows app, but it does not install, update, or repair the desktop app.
If Gemini won’t let you sign in
Sign-in depends on the account type and, for managed accounts, on administrator settings. Google says Gemini sign-in supports a personal Google Account, a qualifying work account, or a school account whose administrator has enabled the service. A valid password alone does not establish that a work or school account is allowed to use Gemini.
- Identify the account you selected. Check whether it is your personal Google Account or an account provided by work or school.
- For work or school, confirm access with the organization. Work accounts must qualify, and a school administrator must enable Gemini for a school account. If access is controlled by an organization, ask its administrator whether Gemini is enabled for your account.
- Check which route is showing the failure. Try to distinguish an app sign-in issue from a web-app access message. Google’s explanation of “Something went wrong” below specifically concerns the web app.
- For the web app, check browser support. Google lists Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, and a browser name rendered as “Edgium” on its help page. Use one of the browser families Google lists; do not assume that a browser-related fix applies to the Windows app.
Google’s computer help also notes that some Gemini features are limited when you are signed out. A signed-out or partially signed-in experience may therefore differ from a signed-in one; it is not necessarily evidence that the Windows app itself is broken.

When asking an organization administrator about access, specify that you are trying to use Gemini and say whether you are using a work or school account. The key question is whether the account qualifies and, for a school account, whether the administrator has enabled the service. A password reset is not the remedy established by Google’s access guidance when the issue is that the account is not permitted to use Gemini.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a web sign-in attempt, the browser is part of the supported setup too. Google’s listed browser families are Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, and “Edgium,” as rendered on its help page. If you are using a different browser, testing in one of those listed options can help separate a browser-support question from an account question. That comparison is for the web app; it does not change the requirements for launching the Windows app.
What “Something went wrong” means on the web app
Google explains that if this message appears while trying to access or sign in to the Gemini web app, “your account can’t access the app at the moment.” Google lists location, age, and account type as possible reasons and suggests trying again later. That message does not identify which reason applies to a particular user, and it should not be treated as the guaranteed explanation for a Windows-app crash or freeze.
- If you’re using the web app, note the exact message and the account type you selected.
- If the account is managed by work or school, check whether the organization allows Gemini for that account.
- If the message persists, try again later as Google suggests. The help text does not promise a specific waiting period or a way to override an eligibility restriction.
The wording is deliberately limited: the account cannot access the web app “at the moment.” It is not a diagnosis of a wrong password, a damaged browser, or a broken Windows app. Location, age, and account type are possibilities Google names, not a list that tells you which one applies. Keep the route in view when using this advice: Google’s explanation is specifically about trying to access or sign in to the Gemini web app.
If you are signed in with an organization-managed account, an administrator can clarify whether access is available to your account. If the account is personal, retain the exact message and try again later as Google suggests. The official guidance does not state a guaranteed resolution time, a particular location workaround, or a way to bypass an access limitation, so avoid treating any of those as established fixes.

Google publishes separate troubleshooting guidance for Gemini in Chrome. Keep these checks within that scope; they are not documented as universal fixes for the Gemini app for Windows or every problem on gemini.google.com.
- Update Chrome. Google advises checking that Chrome is current.
- Check language and organization settings. Google identifies supported language and organization settings as relevant checks for Gemini in Chrome. If the feature is managed by an organization, review its access settings with the administrator.
- Reload the Gemini interface. Google recommends reloading the interface for this Chrome-specific feature.
- Consider the network or environment. Google’s guidance says VPN use or a virtualized environment may be relevant. If either applies, account for it when diagnosing the Chrome feature; the guidance does not establish that either one is always the cause.
If these checks do not resolve the Chrome feature, don’t assume that clearing Windows-app data or reinstalling the desktop app is the next documented step: Google’s cited Chrome guidance does not make that connection.

Keep the order practical: first confirm that you are troubleshooting Gemini in Chrome rather than the standalone Windows app; then check Chrome’s version and the feature’s language or organization settings; reload its interface; finally consider whether a VPN or virtualized environment is relevant. These checks are not a claim that each condition is wrong on your computer. They are the specific browser-feature items Google calls out, and they should not be presented as fixes for every instance of Gemini failing to respond.
Choose the next step from the symptom
| Symptom | Best next check | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| The Windows app does not open | Check Windows version, RAM, available disk space, and internet stability; note whether the web app opens separately. | These are the app’s published prerequisites. If they are satisfied, Google’s documented guidance does not identify a specific cause or guaranteed repair for a launch failure. |
| The app opens but does not respond | Check for an update notice and use Restart if one is displayed. Compare with the web app. | The update action applies only when the app says an update is available. A working web app is a separate route, not proof that the Windows app is repaired. |
| Sign-in fails for a work or school account | Confirm that the account qualifies and that the organization has enabled Gemini. | Managed-account access can depend on administrator settings. |
| The web app says “Something went wrong” | Check account eligibility and consider location, age, or account type; try again later. | Google says the account may be unable to access the web app at that moment, but the message does not specify which possible reason applies. |
| Gemini in Chrome fails | Update Chrome, check language and organization settings, reload the interface, and consider VPN or virtualization. | These checks apply to Gemini in Chrome, not automatically to the Windows app. |
This comparison also helps avoid unnecessary steps. App requirements are relevant when you launched the Windows app; browser support and the “Something went wrong” explanation are relevant when you used the web app; Chrome’s language, organization, reload, VPN, and virtualization checks belong to Gemini in Chrome. The three routes overlap in that they involve Gemini, but Google documents different conditions for each.
When the documented checks aren’t enough
If the Windows app still will not launch or respond after its published requirements and update notice have been checked, Google’s Windows-app help does not establish a universal, symptom-specific fix. Keep a short record of the route you used, what the app did, whether an update notice appeared, whether the web app worked, and which account type you tried. That makes it easier to describe the issue accurately when seeking support without confusing an app problem with an account-access restriction.
For a managed work or school account, the organization’s administrator is the relevant contact for whether the service is enabled. For a web-app access message, use Google’s account eligibility guidance and the exact wording of the error; do not apply the message’s location, age, or account-type explanation to a separate desktop-app failure without evidence.
A useful issue note can be brief: “Windows app” or “gemini.google.com”; whether the window appeared; whether the failure happened before or after sign-in; whether an update notice was shown; the account category (personal, work, or school); and whether the web route behaved differently. Include the PC checks you verified—Windows 10 or later, 8 GB or more of RAM, 200 MB available disk space, and stable internet—rather than simply saying the computer is compatible. This does not replace support guidance, but it makes the symptom and tested route clear.
There is no single repair sequence in Google’s Windows-app help for every non-opening or unresponsive state. In particular, the published information does not promise that reinstalling, clearing app data, changing hardware, or using a PC-cleanup tool will fix the issue. Stay with the documented checks, use the web app as a separate access route if it works for you, and ask the account administrator about managed-account eligibility.

Is Gemini for Windows the same as the Gemini web app?
No. The Windows app and the web app at gemini.google.com are separate routes. A browser check or a working web session does not by itself repair or diagnose the Windows app.
Which browsers does Google list for the Gemini web app on a computer?
Google lists Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, and “Edgium” as rendered on its help page. Browser-support checks apply to the web app, not automatically to the Windows app.
Why does Gemini say “Something went wrong” when I try to sign in?
For the web app, Google says this can mean your account cannot access the app at that moment. Possible reasons include location, age, or account type; the message does not specify which reason applies. Google suggests trying again later.
Can I use a work or school account with Gemini?
Google says sign-in supports a qualifying work account or a school account whose administrator enabled Gemini. If you cannot sign in with a managed account, check eligibility and ask the organization’s administrator whether the service is enabled.
What should I do if the Windows app says an update is available?
Google’s instruction is to click Restart. Gemini restarts and installs the update. This applies when the app displays the update notice; it is not a general fix for an app that will not open.
Does Alt + Space fix Gemini if it won’t launch?
Alt + Space is Google’s documented quick-access shortcut for the Windows app. You can try it as another way to invoke the app, but a shortcut that does nothing does not identify or resolve the cause of a launch failure.
What should I check if Gemini in Chrome is not working?
For the Chrome-specific feature, Google advises checking that Chrome is current, reviewing supported language and organization settings, reloading the Gemini interface, and considering VPN or virtualized-environment restrictions. These are not universal fixes for the Windows app.
The Bottom Line
Start by identifying whether you’re using the Windows app, the web app, or Gemini in Chrome. For the Windows app, verify Windows 10 or later, 8 GB RAM, 200 MB free disk space, and stable internet; click Restart only if the app shows an update notice. For sign-in problems, check account eligibility and administrator access, and treat “Something went wrong” as a web-app message with several possible causes—not as a guaranteed explanation for a desktop-app failure.
