When Gboard will not type capital letters, first separate two problems that look alike: automatic capitalization at the beginning of a sentence and manual capitalization with the Shift key. In Gboard, open Settings → Text correction and check Auto-capitalization for the first problem. For a Shift-key failure, test another app, restart and update the phone and Gboard, then clear Gboard’s cache. Clear Gboard’s data only as a later step because it returns the keyboard to its default state.
The sequence below also covers app-specific fields, glide typing, caps lock, and what to record if the failure remains.
Identify which kind of capitalization is failing
A precise symptom points to a faster fix. Type in a normal text field and compare automatic sentence starts with a manually selected capital letter.
| What you see | Most relevant check | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| A new sentence starts with a lowercase letter, but tapping Shift works | Gboard Auto-capitalization under Text correction | It does not indicate that the Shift key is broken. |
| Tapping Shift gives visual or touch feedback, but the next letter remains lowercase | Test another app, then follow the restart, update, and cache sequence | It does not establish a known, widespread Google bug. |
| Capitals work in one app or field but not another | Compare a second standard text-entry app | The available evidence does not establish why a particular app or field may differ. |
| Capitals fail mainly while swiping or glide-typing | Switch briefly to tap typing and test Shift separately | It does not show that automatic capitalization is disabled. |
Use a short test sentence such as “this is a test.” Start a fresh sentence without touching Shift, then type another word after tapping Shift. This separates the automatic rule from the keyboard control.

Repeat the test after every change rather than relying on memory. A useful sequence is: type a lowercase word after a period, tap Shift once and type a letter, then type another letter without Shift. Write down which of those three results is wrong. This prevents a successful automatic capital from masking a manual Shift failure, or vice versa.
Turn on automatic sentence capitalization
If the first letter after a period or other sentence boundary stays lowercase, check the setting before changing anything else. The setting is part of Gboard, not a system-wide capitalization switch.
- Open any app with a text field.
- Tap the keyboard’s gear icon. If the toolbar is hidden, tap the four-square or arrow button first and then choose Settings.
- Tap Text correction.
- Find Auto-capitalization and turn it on.
- Return to the text field and begin a new sentence to test the change.
Menu names and the location of the gear can vary slightly by Gboard version and phone manufacturer. If you do not see the setting in the keyboard, open the phone’s Settings, search for Gboard, and enter its settings from there.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Auto-capitalization changes sentence starts automatically; it does not force a capital when you tap a letter in the middle of a word. Conversely, turning this option on cannot repair a Shift key that fails to produce a capital on demand.
Google’s Gboard Help explains that automatic changes can be disabled when they are unwanted: “If it causes unwanted alterations to your text, turn off Smart compose or Auto-capitalization.” That advice is useful in reverse here: if sentence-start capitals are missing, verify that Auto-capitalization is enabled.
After enabling it, test a genuinely new sentence. Place the cursor at the end of a short sentence, add a period and a space, and type a letter without pressing Shift. Then test a separate word after manually tapping Shift. If only the first test fails, remain focused on the setting rather than resetting the keyboard.
Test manual capitalization and caps lock
To test the Shift key independently, tap it once and then tap a letter. The letter should appear uppercase. Do not rely on sentence position for this test, because automatic capitalization might obscure the result.
Single capital letter
- Tap inside a plain text field.
- Tap Shift once. On Gboard it is the upward-arrow key.
- Tap a letter, such as a.
- Confirm that the result is A, then tap another letter without Shift to check that lowercase typing resumes.
Look at the character that was inserted, not only the key animation, vibration, or color change. A Shift key can provide touch feedback while the resulting character remains lowercase, so the inserted text is the decisive test.
A run of uppercase letters
A Google community answer recommends double-tapping Shift for shift lock. Treat this as community guidance rather than a behavior guaranteed on every Gboard version, language, or device. If double-tapping does nothing, use one-letter tests and continue with the supported maintenance steps instead of assuming the keyboard has a permanent hardware-style caps-lock mode.

Also test whether a long press or hold-and-slide gesture is involved. A gesture can be misread when the finger moves before the key press registers. Tap Shift and the letter separately while diagnosing; return to gestures only after ordinary taps work.
For a fair caps-lock test, double-tap Shift, type two or three letters, then tap Shift again and type another letter. Record whether the first run is uppercase and whether lowercase resumes. Because the community recommendation is not guaranteed across versions, a failed double-tap is not by itself proof that Gboard is defective.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck whether only one app or field is affected
Open a second, ordinary text-entry app and repeat both tests. Gmail and Keep are examples of standard fields, but any app that accepts ordinary text will work.
- If automatic and manual capitals work in the second app, the original app or its particular field is the likely boundary of the problem.
- If both apps show the same failure, the issue is more likely in Gboard, its configuration, or the device software.
- If only one field within an app behaves differently, compare a title field, message field, search box, or note field before changing Gboard data.
An August 28, 2023 Google community answer describes app-dependent capitalization behavior, but the available official guidance does not explain why particular apps or fields may differ. Therefore, app comparison is a diagnostic test, not proof of a specific cause.
Some fields intentionally restrict editing or transform text. A password box, numeric field, search field, or form controlled by an app may not behave like a normal paragraph. Test in a plain note or message field before concluding that Gboard itself is failing.
Keep the comparison controlled: use the same language, the same one-tap Shift action, and the same short test in both apps. If the original app is the only place with a problem, capture its name and the exact field. That detail is more useful for app support than a general statement that “Gboard is broken.”
Follow the low-impact repair sequence
Google’s troubleshooting guidance places basic maintenance before destructive resets. Perform these steps in order, testing the same manual and automatic-capitalization examples after each one.
1. Restart the phone
Save unfinished work, restart the device, unlock it, and repeat the test. A restart reloads the keyboard process and the app that hosts the text field without changing Gboard’s saved configuration.
Do not skip the post-restart test by opening an already-running field from before the reboot. Open the app again and create a fresh text field so you know the keyboard process has been relaunched.

2. Update Gboard
Open the device’s app store, search for Gboard, and install an available update. If the store shows only Open or Installed, there may be no update offered for that device at that moment. After updating, reopen the affected app rather than testing in a field that was left open during the update.
Also install pending Android system updates when practical. The exact update path differs by manufacturer, so use the phone’s Settings search for System update if necessary.
Note the Gboard version before and after updating if you are documenting a repeatable failure. Version timing can help distinguish a persistent configuration issue from behavior that started after a software change.
3. Clear Gboard’s cache
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Tap Apps, App management, or the equivalent label.
- Select Gboard. Use the app search if the list is long.
- Tap Storage or Storage & cache.
- Choose Clear cache, not Clear data.
- Return to a text field and repeat the capitalization test.
Manufacturers use different labels, but the distinction matters: clearing cache is the less disruptive operation. It is intended for temporary keyboard data and does not deliberately return all Gboard settings to their defaults.
If the capitalization issue is unchanged, do not repeatedly clear the cache expecting a different result. Move to the next diagnostic step and keep the result in your notes.
4. Force-stop and relaunch only if Gboard is frozen
If Gboard is crashing, frozen, or ignoring all key presses, open its app-information screen from Settings → Apps → Gboard, tap Force stop, confirm, and open a text field again. This is a relaunch step for an unresponsive keyboard; it is not a replacement for checking Auto-capitalization or testing Shift.
Clear Gboard data only after the basic steps
If the same failure appears across multiple apps after a restart, update, and cache clear, clearing Gboard’s data is the next supported reset. It returns Gboard to its default state and may reset your configuration, so note any language, layout, or preference changes you want to restore.
This reset is more disruptive than clearing cache. Before confirming it, make sure you know which languages and layouts you use and that you can complete Gboard’s setup again. Do not treat it as a harmless repeat of clearing cache.
- Open Settings → Apps → Gboard → Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear storage, Clear data, or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
- Confirm the reset.
- Open a text field and complete Gboard’s setup prompts if they appear.
- Recheck Settings → Text correction → Auto-capitalization, then test a manual Shift press.
After the reset, test before restoring every preference. First confirm one automatic sentence-start capital and one manually shifted letter. If those work, restore languages, layouts, and other preferences one at a time so a later change can be identified if the symptom returns.

When reinstalling or removing an update is appropriate
For crashes, repeated freezing, or a keyboard that will not respond after the earlier steps, Google also lists reinstalling as an option. Before uninstalling Gboard, make sure another keyboard is installed and enabled so you can still enter text and sign in if needed.
If the problem began immediately after an update
Google says uninstalling updates may help when a problem starts right after an update. The wording refers to removing the app’s updates, not deleting the entire operating system. The available option and exact path depend on the phone; it may appear in Gboard’s app-information menu as Uninstall updates.
After removing an update, test capitalization before installing the latest version again. Record what changed and when, because that timing is useful if you submit feedback.

If Gboard must be reinstalled
- Install and enable a secondary keyboard first.
- From the app store, uninstall Gboard or remove its updates using the option offered by the device.
- Restart the phone if requested.
- Install Gboard again from the official app store, open a text field, and select it as the active keyboard.
- Retest automatic sentence capitalization and manual Shift independently.
Reinstallation is a recovery step for persistent crashes or unresponsiveness, not the first response to a single missing capital.

A Google Gboard Community thread dated October 9, 2026 describes a Shift key that provided touch feedback but did not capitalize letters. The report also says that long-press caps lock and hold-and-slide capitalization failed. The thread labels community content as potentially unverified. It demonstrates that a user reported this exact symptom; it does not confirm a widespread Google bug or an official workaround.
If your phone shows the same behavior after the supported steps, collect a reproducible description before sending feedback through Gboard’s Help & feedback option. Include:
- Phone make and model
- Android version
- Gboard version
- Enabled language or languages
- The apps and specific fields where capitals fail
- Whether automatic sentence capitalization, single-tap Shift, double-tap Shift, and glide typing each fail
- The exact steps that reproduce the problem
- Which maintenance steps you already tried and what changed, if anything
Keep the report specific. State whether Shift produces touch feedback, whether the resulting character is lowercase, and whether the same sequence works in Gmail, Keep, or another plain text field. Include the date the behavior began and whether it followed an update. Avoid presenting the community thread’s behavior as a confirmed diagnosis.

Common mistakes that make the problem harder to diagnose
- Changing Auto-capitalization to fix Shift: The option controls automatic sentence starts, not the physical action of tapping Shift.
- Testing only one app: An app or field can behave differently. Always make a comparison test before resetting Gboard.
- Clearing data first: A data reset returns Gboard to its default state and can erase your carefully configured preferences.
- Using only glide typing: Swipe paths can obscure whether Shift itself works. Use separate taps while troubleshooting.
- Assuming touch feedback proves success: The key may animate or vibrate even when the resulting character is lowercase.
- Uninstalling without another keyboard: Install and enable a backup keyboard before removing Gboard from the only active input method.
- Changing several settings at once: If you toggle capitalization, reset data, and change languages together, you cannot tell which action affected the result.
- Calling every lowercase result a Gboard failure: First check whether the field is a special input control or whether only automatic sentence capitalization is disabled.
After the fix: verify both paths
Once a step appears to work, verify both kinds of capitalization again. Type a new sentence without touching Shift, then tap Shift for a capital in the middle of a line. Test a second app if the original symptom was app-specific. Finally, try the gesture you normally use, such as glide typing, only after ordinary taps produce the expected characters.
If the fix works only temporarily, note when it regresses, which app was open, and whether the phone or Gboard updated. That repeatable timeline is more useful than repeatedly applying resets.
A compact decision path
- Does the problem affect only sentence starts? Enable Auto-capitalization in Gboard Settings → Text correction.
- Does one-tap Shift fail? Test a second standard text field, then restart, update, and clear Gboard’s cache.
- Does the failure remain in every app? Consider clearing Gboard data, understanding that it resets the keyboard’s configuration.
- Is Gboard crashing or frozen? Force-stop and relaunch; if that fails, prepare a secondary keyboard before reinstalling or removing an update.
- Does Shift still fail after the reset? Record the device, software versions, languages, affected apps, and repeatable steps, then send feedback through Gboard Help & feedback.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Gboard type lowercase at the start of every sentence?
Open Gboard Settings, choose Text correction, and enable Auto-capitalization. Then start a fresh sentence and test again. This setting controls automatic sentence starts; it does not repair a manually tapped Shift key.

Why does the Shift key highlight but still produce a lowercase letter?
Test Shift with separate taps in a plain text field and compare another app. If the result is still lowercase everywhere, restart the phone, update Gboard, and clear its cache before considering a data reset.
How do I turn on caps lock in Gboard?
A Google community answer recommends double-tapping Shift, but that behavior is not guaranteed on every Gboard version, language, or device. Treat it as a test rather than a confirmed universal feature.
Could only one app be causing the capitalization problem?
Yes. Compare the same automatic and manual tests in another ordinary text-entry app, such as Gmail or Keep. App-specific behavior is reported by users, but the reason for differences is not established by Google’s official troubleshooting guidance.
Will clearing Gboard data delete my settings?
Clearing data or storage returns Gboard to its default state and may reset languages, layouts, and preferences. Use it only after restarting, updating, and clearing the cache.

The Bottom Line
Separate automatic sentence capitalization from manual Shift behavior. Enable Auto-capitalization for missing sentence-start capitals; for a failed Shift key, compare another app and follow Google’s sequence of restart, update, and cache clearing. Clear Gboard data, remove updates, or reinstall only when simpler steps fail, and document persistent failures through Gboard Help & feedback.
