Most Gboard problems can be fixed without replacing your keyboard or resetting your phone. Start in Gboard’s Text correction settings: turn on Auto-correction for automatic fixes and Show suggestion strip for the prediction bar. Then update Gboard, restart Android, check your active languages, and clear the app cache. Clear Gboard data or storage only as a later step because Google says that resets the keyboard to its default state.
The labels and menu paths can vary by Android version and phone manufacturer. The steps below use Google’s current Android guidance and identify where a setting has a different effect from a full app reset.
Start with the symptom you actually have
“Gboard autocorrect not working,” “Gboard predictive text not showing,” “Gboard suggestion bar disappeared,” “Gboard keeps changing my words,” and “Gboard is using the wrong language” are related complaints, but they do not all use the same control. Use this quick map before changing settings.
| What you see | First place to check | What the change should do |
|---|---|---|
| Words are no longer corrected automatically | Gboard Settings > Text correction > Auto-correction | Enables automatic replacement of likely typing errors. |
| The row of predicted words is missing | Gboard Settings > Text correction > Show suggestion strip | Restores the suggestion bar above the keys when the language and app support it. |
| Correct words are being replaced unexpectedly | Auto-correction, Smart Compose, and Auto-capitalization | Lets you disable the specific behavior instead of turning off every suggestion. |
| Suggestions appear in the wrong language | Gboard Settings > Languages | Leaves the intended languages enabled and reduces competing layouts. |
| One name or technical term is repeatedly marked wrong | Gboard Settings > Dictionary | Adds the term to your personal dictionary or removes an unwanted learned word. |
If a control is already set correctly, do not keep toggling it. Continue in the order below so that low-impact fixes happen before a reset.

Open Gboard’s settings
Gboard’s settings are available from the keyboard itself, so you do not need to hunt through every Android settings category.
- Open an app that accepts text, such as Messages, Notes, or a browser address field.
- Tap the text field so Gboard appears.
- Tap the keyboard’s Settings icon. Depending on your layout, it may be under the four-square or three-dot menu.
- If you cannot see a Settings icon, touch and hold the comma key. Google documents that gesture as an alternative way to open Gboard settings.
On some phones you can also reach the keyboard’s app page through Android Settings, but the exact category names differ by manufacturer. Once Gboard Settings is open, use the sections named Text correction, Languages, and Dictionary for the fixes in this guide.
Repair autocorrect and the suggestion bar
Turn automatic correction on or off
- Open Gboard Settings.
- Tap Text correction.
- Find Auto-correction.
- Turn it on if you want Gboard to replace likely mistakes automatically. Turn it off if Gboard keeps changing words that you intentionally typed.
Auto-correction controls replacement behavior; it does not control whether the row of proposed words is visible. You can therefore leave automatic correction off while keeping suggestions available for manual selection.

- In Gboard Settings, open Text correction.
- Enable Show suggestion strip.
- Return to the text field and type a few characters to test the bar.
This is the setting to check when “Gboard predictive text not showing” or “Gboard suggestion bar disappeared” describes the problem. Suggestions depend on supported languages and particular device features, so enabling the strip does not guarantee suggestions for every language or every context.
Stop unwanted rewrites without losing useful suggestions
If Gboard keeps changing my words, inspect the other correction controls in the same screen rather than switching off every feature:

- Smart Compose: If it is available on your device and language, turn it off when its completions or rewrites are the behavior you want to stop. Google documents restrictions for Smart Compose, so its availability is not universal.
- Auto-capitalization: Turn it off if sentence starts, names, or code are being capitalized against your intentions.
- Auto-correction: Turn this off when the unwanted change is an automatic replacement rather than a gray or selectable suggestion.
Test one change at a time in the same app. That makes it clear which control caused the change and preserves the features you still want.
Update Gboard and restart Android
Google’s first maintenance steps are to install the latest Gboard version and restart the device. An update can repair a keyboard bug, while a restart reloads the input service and clears a temporary process failure.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for Gboard and open its app listing.
- Tap Update when an update is offered. If the button says Open, Play Store is not offering an update at that moment.
- Restart the phone or tablet using its normal power menu.
- Open a text field and test correction, suggestions, and the affected language.
Do this before clearing app data. Updating and restarting do not intentionally erase your personal dictionary or reset your keyboard layout.
Clear the cache before clearing Gboard data
A damaged temporary file can interfere with suggestions or the keyboard process. Google’s Android troubleshooting order puts cache clearing ahead of clearing data or storage because cache clearing is the lower-impact reset.
Clear only the cache
- Open Android Settings.
- Tap Apps (the label may be Apps & notifications).
- Select Gboard. If it is not visible, use the app-list search.
- Tap Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Return to a text field and test the keyboard.
The exact wording can differ on Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, and other Android interfaces, but look for Gboard’s storage page and a separate cache action. Clearing cache removes temporary files; it is not the same as deleting the keyboard’s stored settings.

Use Clear data or Clear storage only as a later reset
If the keyboard is still broken after checking controls, updating, restarting, and clearing cache, return to Settings > Apps > Gboard > Storage and cache and choose Clear data or Clear storage, depending on the wording on your device. Google says this resets Gboard to its default state.
Before you confirm, expect to review your keyboard settings again afterward, including languages, correction preferences, themes, and other customizations. This step is more disruptive than clearing cache, so use it for persistent faults rather than as the first response to a missing suggestion.
| Action | Effect | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Change Text correction settings | Changes one feature immediately | When a specific correction or suggestion control is wrong. |
| Update and restart | Refreshes the app and its running service | After checking settings, or when behavior changed suddenly. |
| Clear cache | Removes temporary Gboard files | When settings look right but the keyboard still behaves incorrectly. |
| Clear data or storage | Resets Gboard to default state | Only after the preceding steps fail and you are ready to configure it again. |
Check languages and layouts
Gboard can produce confusing corrections when several languages or layouts compete for the same keystrokes. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping the active set to one or two languages for smoother typing.
Confirm the intended language is enabled
- Open Gboard Settings from a text field.
- Tap Languages.
- Check that the language you intend to type is present.
- Tap a language to verify the layout you want, such as QWERTY, and remove a layout you never use.
- Return to the keyboard and use the language or globe key to select the intended language before testing.
If Gboard is using the wrong language, check this list before changing autocorrect. A language mismatch can make correct words look like errors and can replace words with a different language’s vocabulary.
Reduce multilingual conflicts
For routine typing, keep only the languages you actively need enabled. If you regularly switch between two languages, test with those two first; temporarily remove additional languages to identify whether one is causing the unwanted suggestions.

A Gboard Community guide offers supplementary advice for mixed-language suggestions: check whether the languages are paired under one layout, or remove and re-add them. This is community guidance rather than a guaranteed Google fix, so use it after the official settings, update, restart, and cache steps.
Manage learned words and personal dictionary entries
Gboard learns words that you type so it can improve spelling and prediction. A learned name, abbreviation, or specialized term can be useful, but an accidental entry can also keep appearing in suggestions.
Add a word that Gboard incorrectly flags
- Type the word in any text field.
- Tap the red-underlined word or the correction indicator.
- Choose Add to dictionary.
- Type the word again to confirm that it is accepted.
This is preferable to repeatedly overriding the same correction because the dictionary records the term for future typing.
Delete learned words
- Open Gboard Settings.
- Tap Dictionary.
- Choose Delete learned words.
- Follow the confirmation prompt.
Google says deletion is permanent. It removes learned words rather than merely hiding them for one conversation, so use it when the learned vocabulary itself is the problem. Afterward, Gboard may need time and normal typing to learn preferred terms again.

When the suggestion feature itself is unavailable
Suggestion controls are not a promise that every feature works in every language or on every device. Google’s suggestions documentation describes support limits for particular languages and devices, and it lists restrictions for Smart Compose. If the suggestion strip is enabled but a specific feature never appears, verify that the feature is supported for your selected language and device before treating the behavior as a fault.

Basic word suggestions and automatic correction are separate from Smart Compose. A language may support the former while not offering the latter. Likewise, a missing suggestion in one app or text context can reflect that context’s limitations rather than a damaged Gboard installation.
Use a targeted troubleshooting sequence
Follow this sequence when you want a single path instead of trying random toggles:
- Identify the symptom. Decide whether the issue is replacement, missing suggestions, wrong language, or one repeatedly misrecognized word.
- Open Gboard Settings. Use the keyboard Settings icon or hold the comma key.
- Check Text correction. Verify Auto-correction and Show suggestion strip; inspect Smart Compose and auto-capitalization if the problem is an unwanted change.
- Check Languages. Keep the intended language selected and limit the active set to one or two while testing.
- Update Gboard. Install the current Play Store update if one is offered.
- Restart Android. Test the same phrase after the restart.
- Clear cache. Use Android Settings > Apps > Gboard > Storage and cache > Clear cache.
- Reset only if necessary. Clear data or storage only when the earlier steps fail, then configure Gboard again.
- Send feedback. If the issue persists, report it through Gboard’s in-keyboard feedback option or the relevant Android Settings feedback path.
Privacy details about learned words and searches
Google states that Gboard saves words you type to help with spelling and prediction and that these saved words stay on the device rather than being sent to Google. That local learned-word behavior is separate from other Gboard functions.
Google also says that searches are sent to Google to return search results and that usage statistics are sent to improve features. Do not treat the on-device dictionary statement as a claim that every Gboard interaction is processed only on the phone; searches and usage statistics are separate categories with their own handling.
When to send feedback instead of performing another reset
Use feedback after you have documented the exact symptom and completed the settings, update/restart, language, and cache checks. Include:
- The Android version and phone model, if you know them.
- The Gboard version shown in its Play Store listing.
- The language and layout selected in Gboard.
- Whether the issue affects every app or only one text field.
- A short example of the word that was changed, omitted, or suggested incorrectly.
- Which troubleshooting steps you already completed.
Gboard provides an in-keyboard feedback route, and Android may expose a feedback option from Settings. A precise example helps distinguish an incorrect dictionary entry from a missing feature or an app-level limitation.
Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not clear data first when a single toggle, language selection, or learned word explains the symptom.
- Do not assume that disabling Auto-correction will restore a missing suggestion strip; they are separate controls.
- Do not delete every language when selecting the intended one or two would solve the conflict.
- Do not expect Smart Compose to be available for every language or device.
- Do not perform a factory reset or install a paid “cleaner” for an ordinary Gboard correction problem. Google’s documented sequence does not recommend either as a standard fix.
