When a game will not launch, hangs on “Preparing to Launch,” or runs badly on a SteamOS handheld, work from the device and game state outward: update SteamOS and the game, restart completely, check the Deck compatibility label and requirements, verify the installation, then test one compatibility tool or performance setting at a time. This separates damaged files and runtime problems from titles blocked by launchers, anti-cheat, or other middleware that graphics tweaks cannot repair.
Start by recording the problem
Before changing settings, create a short baseline. Troubleshooting becomes much faster when you can tell which change helped and provide useful details if you need support.
Write down these facts
- The handheld model and SteamOS version.
- The game’s installed build or version, and whether it is installed internally or on a removable card.
- Free storage space and the library location.
- The exact error message, or the point where the process stops, such as a permanent “Preparing to Launch” message, a black screen, or an immediate return to the library.
- Whether the game has a native Linux build or is running a Windows build through Proton.
- The current Deck compatibility label: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown.
- The Proton or Steam Play tool selected for the title, if one is forced.
- What you have already tried and what changed, if anything.
Do not assume a fix posted for one game, Proton release, or SteamOS version applies to another. Keep a simple note with the date and each test result. That prevents repeatedly changing the same setting and gives a support report enough context to be actionable.
Install updates and perform a full restart
Pending updates are the highest-value first check because SteamOS, the Steam client, compatibility tools, and the game can each contain a fix for launch or performance problems. Open the system update controls in Gaming Mode and install every available SteamOS update. Let Steam finish client and compatibility-tool downloads, then update the game itself.

- Install pending SteamOS updates from the system settings.
- Allow Steam client, Steam Play, Proton, and game updates to complete.
- Restart the handheld from the power menu rather than merely closing the game.
- Launch the title once with its normal, default compatibility selection before applying custom tweaks.
Valve’s software guidance treats updating and restarting as the first software checks. A restart matters after an update because it reloads services, graphics components, and the Steam client instead of leaving an older process in memory.
If a stable update appears to have introduced the problem, the SteamOS Beta channel can be a diagnostic option. Beta software is not automatically more reliable; use it to test whether a newer fix changes the behavior, and record the channel and version when reporting the result.
Use the Deck compatibility label as a constraint
The label on the game’s store or library details is a practical starting point, not a guarantee for every hardware revision or future update.

Valve’s checks cover more than whether the main executable opens. They include controller input, support for 1280×800 or 1280×720 displays, usable launchers, Proton compatibility for middleware, and anti-cheat support. A game that runs on a desktop can therefore remain Playable or Unsupported on a handheld because its launcher, input flow, or anti-cheat component does not work in the handheld environment.

Compare requirements with the handheld
Read the game’s published minimum and recommended requirements and compare them with the handheld’s CPU, GPU, memory, and storage situation. A device close to the minimum can launch yet stutter, compile shaders for a long time, or fail when a launcher consumes additional memory. Requirements are not a promise of a particular frame rate, and no universal FPS or battery figure applies to every SteamOS handheld and game.
Repair files when launch stops at “Preparing to Launch”
Steam Support identifies corruption in extracted game files as a common cause of a title that remains at “Preparing to Launch” or closes immediately. Verify the installation before downloading a complete reinstall.
- Open your Library and highlight the game.
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of installed files and wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game again without changing several other variables at the same time.
Verification may reacquire damaged or missing files. If it repeatedly reports a problem, check whether the library drive is still mounted, whether the card or internal storage has enough free space, and whether the storage is showing read or write errors. A reinstall on an unreliable or intermittently mounted drive can reproduce the same failure, so storage health and connection stability deserve attention before repeating a large download.
Record the exact error rather than paraphrasing it. “Cannot initialize,” a missing executable, a launcher crash, and an anti-cheat refusal point to different branches of the diagnosis.

Test Proton deliberately instead of guessing
Windows games on SteamOS normally run through Proton, while some titles provide a native Linux build. Proton is not a single permanent environment: Valve and the community publish multiple Steam Play compatibility tools, and a game can behave differently after an update.
Force a compatibility tool for one game
- Highlight the game in the Library.
- Open Properties.
- Choose Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the Valve-recommended or default tool first, launch the game, and note the result.
- If it still fails, test one alternate Proton tool at a time, recording its exact name and version.
Change only one tool between launches. Testing several versions together makes it impossible to identify the cause, and an alternate tool that helps one title may break another. Do not treat Proton Experimental or a community build as a universal cure; compatibility is title-specific and can change with a game patch or Proton update.
When a runtime branch has just changed
Steam Play also uses Linux container runtimes. If Steam downloads or switches a runtime branch, the client can continue using an older runtime in the current session. Valve’s documented workaround is to allow the update to finish, completely exit Steam, and launch Steam again. A game that fails only immediately after a runtime update should therefore be retested after this full client restart before you start changing game files.

The game executable is only one part of the launch chain. A separate launcher, anti-cheat service, codec, DRM component, or other middleware can stop a title before gameplay begins. Valve’s Verified criteria explicitly require navigable launchers and Proton support for all included middleware, including anti-cheat.

Signs that graphics settings are not the answer
- The game returns to the library before a window appears.
- An anti-cheat or security dialog reports that the platform is unsupported.
- A launcher opens but cannot accept controller input or has unreadable controls at handheld resolution.
- The title works only when a separate service is available, but that service does not support the SteamOS environment.
- Changing resolution, texture quality, or frame limits has no effect on the failure.
For these cases, check the title’s current compatibility notes and community reports for a supported configuration. If the underlying component is not supported, changing Proton versions may not help, and an Unsupported label is a meaningful constraint rather than an invitation to endlessly lower graphics settings.

Once the game launches, establish a conservative baseline before chasing higher image quality. Use the handheld’s performance menu and the game’s own video options, and change one setting per test.
Respect the display’s refresh-rate cap
Set the refresh rate at or below the maximum supported by your particular handheld model. A refresh setting above the panel’s cap cannot improve performance and can increase battery use. The exact cap varies by model, so use the value shown by the device rather than copying a setting from another handheld.
Use a controlled graphics test
- Choose a conservative in-game resolution appropriate for the panel, such as 1280×800 or 1280×720 when the title supports it.
- Select a low or medium preset and disable optional effects that have a large GPU cost.
- Set a frame-rate limit that the device can sustain instead of targeting an unstable peak.
- Play the same scene or repeat the same action for several minutes.
- Observe frame pacing, temperature, fan behavior, and battery draw.
- Raise one setting, retest the same scene, and keep the change only if the result is acceptable.
Frame rate alone can hide uneven delivery. A game that reports a high average but pauses during shader compilation may feel worse than a title held to a lower, steady limit. Record whether a problem is constant, occurs only during loading or new effects, or appears after the device warms up; those patterns distinguish a graphics limit from a one-time compilation event or thermal behavior.

Balance image quality, speed, and battery

There is no responsible universal FPS target for all SteamOS handhelds. The result depends on the model, game engine, Proton version, resolution, scene, and update state. Use repeatable scenes and your own acceptable frame pacing as the decision rule.
Check storage and removable-library behavior
An installation on internal storage and one on a removable card can differ in mount reliability, available space, and read performance. Capture the location in your baseline. If verification fails repeatedly or the game disappears from the Library, confirm that the drive is mounted and that Steam still sees the library path.
- Keep enough free space for updates and temporary extraction; a nearly full device can fail while patching even when the installed game appears intact.
- Do not remove or reseat a card while Steam is downloading, verifying, or writing shader and compatibility data.
- If the same title works from one library but not another, treat the storage path as a variable and test without changing Proton at the same time.
- Repeated verification errors on one location justify checking the card or drive for health and connection problems before reinstalling.
Follow a complete decision path
Use this order so that each test answers a different question:

- Restart: reboot the handheld; if a runtime changed, also completely exit and relaunch Steam.
- Classify: read the compatibility label and compare the game’s requirements with the device.
- Repair: use Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of installed files.
- Tool test: for a Windows title, force the default Valve tool, then test one alternate Proton version at a time.
- Middleware check: identify launcher, anti-cheat, codec, or DRM failures that graphics settings cannot solve.
- Performance baseline: stay within the model’s refresh cap, lower resolution and preset, cap frame rate, and change one option per test.
- Storage test: confirm the library remains mounted and investigate repeated verification errors.
- Escalate: report the complete evidence instead of only saying that the game does not work.
Know when a workaround is unlikely to help
A forced Proton version is worth testing when the title is expected to work but its current tool or runtime state is suspect. It is not a general solution for a title whose required anti-cheat or launcher is unsupported. Similarly, lowering graphics can improve a game that launches slowly or stutters under load, but it cannot repair missing files, a detached library, or a middleware rejection.
Use the compatibility label to set expectations: Verified narrows the likely causes to a local or recent change; Playable tells you to look for manual input, launcher, or display adjustments; Unsupported means Valve currently considers the title nonfunctional; Unknown requires more cautious testing because no Valve check is available.
Escalate with useful evidence
If the workflow does not resolve the problem, provide a reproducible report through the game’s support route, Steam Play community discussions, or the Proton issue tracker. Include:
- Handheld model and SteamOS version.
- Game name, build, and compatibility label.
- Native Linux or Proton execution, plus the exact Proton or runtime version.
- Internal or removable install location and remaining free space.
- The exact error text and the point of failure.
- Whether updates, restart, file verification, a default tool, and an alternate tool were tested.
- Any launcher or anti-cheat message.
- For performance reports, resolution, refresh rate, frame cap, graphics preset, repeatable scene, and observed frame pacing or battery behavior.
This information lets others distinguish a corrupted installation from a regression, runtime mismatch, hardware limit, or platform-level middleware block. It also prevents a title-specific workaround from being presented as a fix for every SteamOS handheld.
