Most launch and input problems on the ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA) come from an outdated software stack, a game profile pointing to the wrong executable, an incorrect control mode, or Xbox mode hiding a window that is already open. Update Windows 11, the Xbox PC app, Game Bar and Armoury Crate SE first; then use the symptom-specific fixes below.
Identify the failure before changing anything
The Ally X combines Windows 11, the Xbox PC app and Game Bar with ASUS Armoury Crate SE. Armoury Crate SE imports games, stores per-game profiles, selects control modes, calibrates sticks and triggers, and installs device updates. Xbox mode adds a controller-focused full-screen shell that changes how windows and desktop shortcuts behave. A problem in any one layer can look like a broken game.

1. Restart and update the complete software stack
Do this before reinstalling a game or rebuilding a profile. A Windows, Game Bar, Xbox app or Armoury Crate update can change how the launcher, input services and Xbox mode communicate.

- Install Windows updates. In Game Bar, open Settings > More Settings > Open Windows Settings > Windows Update. Install every available update, then restart when Windows asks.
- Update Armoury Crate SE. Open Command Center, choose Open Armoury Crate SE, go to Update Center, select Check for Updates, and choose Update All. Restart again if prompted.
- Bring the Xbox PC app and Game Bar to current versions. Update them through their normal Windows or Microsoft Store update route. Do not test a launch failure until both applications have finished updating.
Xbox mode itself requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is available only in supported markets. If the feature is absent, behaves differently or cannot be enabled, verify the Windows version and regional availability before treating that behavior as a game fault.

2. Make a missing game appear in Armoury Crate or Xbox
Add an installed title to Armoury Crate
Armoury Crate normally imports installed games, but an installation can be missed after a launcher update, a drive-letter change or a manual install.
- Open Armoury Crate SE and select Manage Library.
- Choose Add Game/App to Library.
- Browse to the installed game’s launcher or executable, add it, and open the new tile.
- Use the tile’s Game Options to verify the profile and startup path before launching.
Removing a tile from the Armoury Crate library does not uninstall the game. To remove the actual installation, use the original launcher or Windows Apps settings. This distinction lets you safely clean up duplicate or stale tiles without deleting files.
Find a title through the Xbox Library
The Xbox Library can aggregate installed PC titles from other storefronts. In My Apps, select the relevant storefront. If that storefront is not listed, open Microsoft Edge and download its launcher from the store’s own website, install or sign in to the launcher, and allow the Xbox Library to detect it. The Xbox Library can also show whether a title is owned, installable or playable through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

If a tile points to a launcher that has moved, correct the executable path in the Armoury Crate profile instead of downloading a second copy.
3. Fix games that launch with the wrong controls
Use Gamepad Mode for controller-first games
Open the game’s profile in Armoury Crate SE and confirm that the control mode is Gamepad Mode, not Desktop Mode. Desktop Mode maps the handheld as a mouse and keyboard for Windows navigation; a game expecting an XInput-style gamepad may ignore those mappings or display keyboard prompts.

Review the button mapping in the same profile. On the RC73, press M1/M2 + B to display the current mappings. This is useful when a rear button, trigger or stick was remapped for another title and the game appears to have stopped responding.
Correct a profile that points to the wrong executable
A launcher may start a helper, updater or a different edition while Armoury Crate applies the profile to another file. The result is a game that opens but uses the wrong controls, or a title that starts in Desktop Mode even though the profile says Gamepad Mode.
- In Armoury Crate SE, open the game’s tile.
- Choose Game Options > Game Info.
- Select an alternative path and browse to the executable that actually starts the game. If the launcher presents several editions, choose the executable for the edition you play.
- Save the change and restart the game completely. Close the launcher and game process before testing again.
If the game has multiple launchers, repeat the check after a launcher update. The profile must follow the executable that receives the game’s input, not merely the first file in the installation folder.
4. Calibrate sticks, triggers and gyro input
When slight stick movement is ignored
Open the device or game profile’s calibration controls in Armoury Crate SE. A dead zone deliberately ignores a small amount of stick movement, which helps prevent drift but can make fine aiming feel unresponsive. Reduce the dead-zone value gradually and test in the game after each change.
An anti-dead-zone increases the output once movement passes the dead zone. It can make a stick feel more responsive, but too much can cause an abrupt jump from no movement to a large in-game movement. ASUS describes dead-zone choices as a trade-off between responsiveness and accidental input, so use the lowest value that stops unintended movement rather than copying a setting from another game.

When gyro aim jitters or drifts
Open the gyro profile and lower its anti-dead-zone setting if the sensor jitters or drifts while the Ally X is held still. Test with the device resting on a stable surface, then retest in the game. Keep gyro settings per game where possible: a value that feels useful for aiming can be too sensitive for a menu or racing title.
Confirm the result outside the game
- Use the Armoury Crate calibration display to confirm that each stick and trigger reaches its full range.
- Press M1/M2 + B to verify the active mapping after calibration.
- Launch a second game or controller-aware Windows screen to separate a device-wide input problem from a single game’s profile.
If several games show the same missing axis or button after calibration and profile checks, leave the game installations intact and repeat the update sequence in section 1 before attempting any reinstall.
5. Understand docked-controller handoff
When the Ally X is docked, an Xbox or Designed for Xbox controller can become the active input device. The April 2026 Xbox update says the paired controller takes control and the handheld controls are disabled until that external controller is disconnected.
- Pair the Xbox or Designed for Xbox controller while the Ally X is still handheld.
- Confirm that the controller can navigate the Xbox interface and that its buttons are recognized.
- Dock the Ally X and start the game.
- If you want to return to handheld controls, disconnect the external controller. Input then returns to the Ally X.
Pairing after docking can leave the game focused on the wrong device or make it appear that the handheld controls have failed. For the smoothest handoff, pair before docking. This behavior changes the input device; it does not alter the game’s installation or save data.
6. Recover a game hidden by Xbox mode
Why the game looks as if it never launched
Xbox mode displays one window at a time. An app can be running in the background while another window is the only one visible. Unsupported full-screen apps can also appear against a black background. Xbox mode disables some desktop shortcuts, so trying ordinary Windows window-switching commands may not produce the expected result.

Use Task View to select the running game
Open Task View in any of these ways:
- Press Win + Tab.
- Long-press the Xbox button.
- Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen.
Select the game window from Task View. If it appears there, the launch succeeded and the issue is window presentation rather than game files. Give the game a moment to finish switching to full screen after selecting it.
Leave Xbox mode when you need the desktop
Exit Xbox mode through Game Bar settings, Task View or Win + F11. Once back at the Windows desktop, check whether the launcher displayed a sign-in prompt, permission dialog or error behind the game window. Complete that prompt, then relaunch from Armoury Crate or the Xbox PC app.
If the title consistently opens to an unsupported black full-screen view, run it from the desktop long enough to change its display mode to a supported windowed or borderless setting, then test it again in Xbox mode. The shell’s documented limitation is the window presentation; it is not evidence that the local game files disappeared.

After updates, library checks, profile correction and Xbox-mode recovery, use the Xbox Library to classify the title. It may be listed as owned, installable or playable through Xbox Cloud Gaming. That classification tells you whether the problem is local files, a launcher account or availability on the current device.
Use cloud play as a fallback, not a repair
Xbox Cloud Gaming can let you play a supported title without fixing the local installation, but it requires a network connection. It does not repair missing files, a broken launcher or a bad local profile. Treat it as a temporary option while you repair or reinstall the local copy.

Prepare for offline use
For travel or unreliable connections, sign in while connected, pre-download game updates and downloadable content, and test the game before leaving the network. A cloud listing cannot substitute for an offline-capable local installation.
8. A decision path that avoids unnecessary reinstalls
- Update and restart. Complete Windows Update, Armoury Crate SE Update Center and Xbox/Game Bar updates.
- Check visibility. Add a missing tile through Manage Library, or inspect the Xbox Library’s My Apps storefront list.
- Check input mode. Set Gamepad Mode, inspect mappings with M1/M2 + B and disconnect any paired docked controller when testing handheld input.
- Check the executable. In Game Options > Game Info, select the path that launches the actual game and restart it.
- Calibrate only the affected controls. Adjust stick dead zone, anti-dead-zone or gyro anti-dead-zone in small steps.
- Check the window. Use Task View in Xbox mode; leave Xbox mode with Win + F11 if the app is black or hidden.
- Choose a fallback. If the local copy remains unavailable, use an available cloud title while connected or repair the original launcher and files.
This order preserves the existing installation and isolates software, profile, input-device and window-management causes before a time-consuming reinstall.
What the current compatibility information means
Xbox reported more than 1,000 PC games in its Handheld Compatibility program in 2026 and reported default Game Profiles for 40 supported games in 2025. Those figures describe program coverage, not a guarantee that every title will launch on every Ally X configuration. A game can still require a corrected executable path, a profile adjustment or a launcher sign-in.
No authoritative failure-rate statistic has been published for games failing to launch or controls failing on the ROG Xbox Ally X. Diagnose the individual symptom instead of assuming that a percentage of devices is affected.
