If a game started crashing after you installed or updated a mod, first preserve an unmodded save, then disable mods using the game’s supported method and repeat the same action that caused the crash. If the problem stops, investigate mod compatibility or a conflict between mods. If it continues, look for a base-game, platform, driver, or other issue instead. The exact steps vary by game, platform, and mod system, so use the official support instructions for your title rather than assuming a universal folder path or repair menu.
Why games crash after installing mods
A mod can change game files, add content, or depend on other mods. A game update can change the behavior those mods rely on, and a mod update can introduce its own incompatibility. Two mods can also interfere with each other even if each works by itself. The result may be a crash, a failure to load a save, a black screen, or an error in the interface.
That does not mean every crash on a modded game is caused by a mod. A useful diagnosis starts with a controlled comparison: record the failure, test the same action with mods disabled, and use the result to choose the next branch. Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 support guidance says to disable mods and check whether the issue persists; Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition guidance recommends uninstalling a recently added Creation or mod and reloading to confirm whether it is related.
These are game-specific examples of the same diagnostic idea, not a universal removal procedure. A mod manager, load-order convention, save format, or repair option used by one game may not apply to another.

Before changing anything: record the failure and protect your save
Take a moment to establish what changed and when. A short record makes it easier to reproduce the problem and to explain it to a mod author or official support team. Note the game version and platform, which mods are enabled and their versions if known, and whether you changed the load order, profile, or save shortly before the first failure.
- Describe the trigger: Does the game crash at startup, while loading a save, after entering a particular area, or after a repeatable action?
- Record recent changes: Include game updates, mod updates, newly installed mods, dependency changes, and changes to the active profile or load order.
- Capture the visible error: Write down the message or take a screenshot. If the game provides a crash report or log through its supported tools, keep it for troubleshooting.
- Preserve an unmodded save: Keep a clean save or backup that you can return to. Bethesda specifically warns Skyrim Special Edition players to keep unmodded saves available in case modded gameplay causes problems.
Do not assume that removing a mod from a save is harmless. A save may refer to content or changes provided by that mod, and the consequences depend on the game and the mod. Where the game supports separate profiles or save copies, use one for diagnosis rather than experimenting on your only working save. Consult the game’s and mod’s instructions before removing content from an existing save.
Check compatibility before changing unrelated settings
If the problem began after a game update, check the mod’s description, update notes, and requirements for the exact game version and platform. A mod that worked yesterday may not yet support today’s game build. Mod creators may need time to publish an update, and an apparently current mod may still require a separate dependency to be updated or enabled.
Bethesda’s Skyrim PC guidance warns that outdated mods can cause crashes, black screens, and interface errors. Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 support material likewise notes that a game update, dependencies, or conflicts can affect supported mods. Check both the mod itself and any required components; updating one item does not necessarily update everything it relies on.

- Compare the game version shown in the game or launcher with the version named in the mod’s compatibility notes.
- Check whether the mod author identifies required companion mods, a specific load order, or known conflicts.
- Look for a notice that an update is pending or that the mod is incompatible with the current game version.
- Do not install a file simply because its name looks similar to the mod you use. Follow the author’s and game’s supported installation process.
If a recently updated game is the likely trigger and the mod has not been confirmed compatible, disabling that mod for a test is more informative than changing graphics settings or unrelated system options first.
Disable mods and repeat the same test
The key comparison is whether the original problem still occurs with mods disabled. Use the game’s mod manager or its documented removal method; do not guess at a folder path or manually delete files unless the game’s instructions tell you to do so. Some games provide in-game mod controls, while others rely on a launcher or a separate system.
- Make sure your clean save or backup is safe. Do not overwrite it with a modded save during the test.
- Disable or remove mods using the supported method for your game. If the game has a documented distinction between disabling and uninstalling, follow the guidance for the test you are performing.
- Restart the game if its instructions require it. A restart can ensure the game is no longer running with previously loaded mod content.
- Repeat the same action that caused the failure. For example, test the same startup, save load, or in-game location rather than doing something unrelated.
- Record what happened. Note whether the same crash or error returned, changed, or disappeared.
Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 support instruction is to uncheck mods and see whether the issue persists. Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition guidance uses a related test for a recently installed Creation or mod: uninstall it and reload. Follow the instructions for your specific game rather than treating either example as a universal rule.
Use the result to choose the next step

This comparison narrows the diagnosis; it does not prove that every mod is faulty when the clean test succeeds, or rule out every mod-related factor when it fails. Keep the test conditions as similar as possible so that the presence or absence of mods is the meaningful difference.

Find the mod or combination that triggers the crash
If the game works with mods disabled, re-enable them in small groups and repeat the same test after each change. This is a practical way to narrow the cause from the official disable-and-retest guidance; it is not a universal procedure prescribed by Larian or Bethesda. Keep notes about which group was enabled and what happened.
Start with recent changes
Test the mod added or updated immediately before the problem began first, if you can do so without disturbing your safe baseline. A recently changed mod is a useful lead, not proof: a game update, a dependency update, or an interaction with another mod may be involved instead.
Test groups, then narrow them
- Begin with all mods disabled and confirm that the original test no longer fails.
- Enable a small group using the game’s supported process, then run the same test.
- If the problem returns, disable that group and test its members or smaller subgroups in turn.
- If the problem does not return, keep that group enabled and test the next small group.
- When one mod seems responsible, test it alongside its documented dependencies and check whether a particular combination reproduces the failure.
This grouping approach is an efficient diagnostic inference, not a guarantee that every conflict will be easy to reproduce. Some failures may depend on a particular save, location, sequence of actions, or interaction between mods. If a mod works alone but the game fails when another is enabled, treat the combination as the lead rather than declaring either mod universally broken.

Once you have narrowed the group, revisit the mod’s requirements and compatibility notes. Confirm that each required component is installed and enabled as directed and that the versions match the game and each other. Look for a known conflict or an author’s specific load-order instructions. Do not apply load-order rules from another game or another mod unless the instructions for your setup support them.

If the issue appears only with a particular mod or combination, share your findings with the mod author. Include the game and mod versions, platform, exact reproduction steps, and the relevant error or log if available. This is more useful than reporting only that the game crashes, because it identifies the conditions under which the failure occurs.

Move on to the official support guidance for the affected game, platform, and launcher. Do not jump straight to a generic repair checklist: the available options and their names differ by system, and an instruction for one launcher may not apply to another.
Bethesda’s support guidance for Skyrim on PC gives examples of base-game checks such as confirming minimum requirements, closing additional programs, updating graphics drivers, and verifying game files through Steam. Its Starfield PC guidance also covers requirements, performance settings, drivers, and game-file repair. These are examples for those games and contexts, not a universal list of fixes for every title.

A mod-free test does not rule out a performance or compatibility problem.
- Use the correct file-check option: If official guidance for your launcher recommends verifying or repairing game files, follow the launcher’s instructions. Do not substitute a file-check process from another platform.
- Review driver and background-app guidance: Apply these checks when the game’s support instructions recommend them for your system. Avoid making several unrelated changes at once, or it may become harder to tell what helped.
- Keep a record of each change: Note the setting or repair step and whether it changed the original symptom. This prevents repeating ineffective steps and makes an eventual support request clearer.
If the crash occurs on a clean save or profile as well as with mods disabled, include that result when contacting official game support. If it occurs only on one modded save, say so; the distinction may help support identify the appropriate next steps.

Choose the right support channel
For a failure isolated to one user-created mod, contact the mod author or use the support channel identified by that author. Larian says it cannot directly manage or fix player-created mods, and Bethesda directs users with mod-specific problems toward the creators. Official game support is the better destination for a failure that persists without mods or for questions about the game’s own troubleshooting procedure.
Include concise, reproducible details rather than a long list of guesses:
- Game title, version, platform, and launcher where relevant.
- Mod names and versions, including required dependencies and the active profile if applicable.
- The action that triggers the problem and the exact message, if any.
- Whether the same test succeeds with mods disabled and, if so, which re-enabled group brings the problem back.
- A relevant crash report or log only when the game or mod author provides a supported way to obtain it.
Do not send files or logs you do not understand through unofficial channels, and do not remove or replace game files based on an unverified fix. Use instructions from the game’s official support page or the mod’s author for any further changes.

Common mistakes that make mod troubleshooting harder
