When Linux remounts a filesystem read-only, it is often protecting your data after detecting corruption or an I/O problem. Do not begin by repeatedly forcing a read-write remount or by running fsck against a mounted volume. First identify the device, mount point, and filesystem type, read the kernel logs, protect important data, and then run the filesystem’s own checker while the filesystem is offline.
For ext2, ext3, and ext4, that checker is e2fsck. XFS requires XFS-specific recovery and repair tools. A root filesystem normally must be checked from recovery mode or a live environment; a separate data volume can usually be unmounted before repair.

What a read-only filesystem error means
A read-only mount prevents ordinary writes such as creating files, changing configuration, or updating a database. Linux may make that change deliberately after a filesystem error rather than because someone selected a permanent read-only setting.
Protective remounts after an error
Ext filesystems support the errors=remount-ro behavior. When the kernel detects a serious filesystem error, it remounts the filesystem read-only to limit further damage. The resulting message may look like a permissions problem, but changing file ownership or running chmod will not repair the underlying metadata.

Storage and transport failures
Kernel messages about I/O errors, command timeouts, failed requests, checksum failures, or a disappearing device point to a broader storage problem. The filesystem may be consistent enough to mount read-only while the disk, SSD, cable, controller, virtual disk, or underlying host remains unreliable. In that situation, repeated repair attempts can increase risk; preserve data and investigate the device first.
Why ext4 can write while mounted ro
A journaled ext4 filesystem may replay its journal during mounting. Therefore, ro does not always mean that the mount operation performs no writes. The Linux ext4 documentation specifies ro,noload when journal replay must be prevented. Use that combination for a strictly non-replaying inspection.
Protect data before running a checker
If the volume contains irreplaceable files, stop treating the error as a routine maintenance task. Avoid repeated write attempts, application restarts that modify the volume, and improvised repair commands. If the device is still readable, copy critical files or make an image using a recovery workflow appropriate to the hardware and your organization’s procedures.
- Record the affected mount point and device before changing anything.
- Stop services and users that write to a non-root volume.
- Keep a known-good backup or verified copy before choosing a write-capable repair.
- If logs show recurring hardware I/O errors, prioritize data preservation and device diagnosis over forcing the filesystem read-write.
Identify the device, mount point, and filesystem
Never guess the partition from a message such as “read-only filesystem.” A path can be backed by a local partition, logical volume, RAID device, network filesystem, or another mount layered below it. Run these commands against the affected path and inspect the result.
findmnt -no SOURCE,FSTYPE,OPTIONS /path/to/problem
findmnt reports the source device, filesystem type, and active mount options for that path. The source might be a name such as /dev/sda2, an LVM path, a mapper device, or a network source.
lsblk -f
lsblk -f gives a device tree with filesystem types, labels, UUIDs, and mount points. This helps distinguish an ext4 partition from an XFS partition before you select a checker.

What fsck actually does
The fsck command is a dispatcher. It may select a helper such as e2fsck based on the detected filesystem, but the helper performs the real examination and repair. Its accepted targets can include a device, mount point, label, or UUID; that flexibility does not remove the need to verify the target yourself.
Read kernel evidence before repair
Check the messages that caused the remount. Use both the current kernel ring buffer and the journal when available.
dmesg -T | tail -n 100
journalctl -k -b -p warning..alert
Look for filesystem corruption reports, journal errors, metadata or checksum failures, command timeouts, failed reads or writes, and repeated resets. A single filesystem error with no hardware symptoms leads to a different decision than a stream of transport errors. Save the relevant output so you can compare it after repair or reboot.

| Another filesystem type | Find the native checker and its current manual; follow that filesystem’s mount-state rules. | Assuming generic fsck options or risks are universal. |
| Any filesystem with repeated hardware I/O errors | Preserve data and investigate the device, then repair only after the storage path is trustworthy. | Repeatedly forcing a read-write remount. |
Repair ext2, ext3, or ext4 safely
1. Stop access to a separate volume
Identify the exact source with findmnt, stop applications using the mount, and unmount it. You can specify the mount point or the device shown by your inspection.
sudo umount /path/to/mount
If unmounting reports that the target is busy, stop the services, shells, containers, backup jobs, and other processes using that path. Do not jump to a forced unmount while writes are still in flight; find and remove the workload that keeps the filesystem open, then retry.
2. Check without changing metadata first
For an offline ext filesystem, perform a no-modification pass before authorizing repairs. The -n option answers “no” to proposed fixes; -f forces a full check even when the filesystem’s clean flag might otherwise skip it.
sudo e2fsck -fn /dev/sdXN
Replace the example device with the source you confirmed. Read the output carefully. A dry run helps you verify that the target is the intended partition and shows the classes of inconsistency that a write-capable pass would address.

3. Run the repair pass only after confirmation
When you have a backup or an acceptable recovery plan and the target is definitely unmounted, run the checker without -n.
sudo e2fsck -f /dev/sdXN
The checker may ask whether to repair individual structures. Review the proposed action instead of blindly accepting every prompt, especially when the volume contains valuable data. An automatic-yes mode can apply many changes without interactive review; use it only when your recovery procedure specifically calls for that trade-off.
4. Bring the volume back and verify
After e2fsck completes, mount the volume normally or reboot if that is how it is managed. Then inspect the mount options and kernel log again.
findmnt -no SOURCE,FSTYPE,OPTIONS /path/to/mount
journalctl -k -b -p warning..alert
A clean check does not prove that failing hardware is healthy. If new I/O errors appear, stop writing and investigate the storage path rather than repeating the same repair.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repairing the root filesystem
The root filesystem is normally mounted and busy while the installed system is running, so a normal online repair is unsafe. The e2fsck manual states that “in general it is not safe to run e2fsck on mounted filesystems,” and results from a mounted check can be invalid.
Recovery mode
- Reboot and choose your distribution’s recovery or rescue entry from its boot menu.
- Open a root shell or maintenance console.
- Confirm the root partition and filesystem with
lsblk -fand, where available, findmnt. - Ensure the target is not mounted read-write. Recovery environments sometimes mount partitions automatically, so unmount the target before checking.
- Run a no-change pass such as
e2fsck -fn /dev/sdXN, review the target and findings, then run the repair pass if appropriate. - Reboot into the installed system and inspect kernel logs and mount options.
Live environment
A distribution live system is useful when recovery mode cannot keep the root partition offline or when the installed system does not boot. Identify the installed root partition from the live session, do not repair the live session’s own filesystem, and run the same offline inspection and repair sequence against the installed partition.
Inspect ext4 without journal replay
If you need to examine an ext4 volume while preserving a strictly non-writing view, mount it with both ro and noload. The kernel documentation specifically describes these options as a way to prevent writes to the filesystem.

sudo mkdir -p /mnt/recovery
sudo mount -o ro,noload /dev/sdXN /mnt/recovery
Use this for inspection or copying files when journal replay must not occur. It is not a substitute for an offline consistency repair: a no-load mount can leave recently journaled changes unapplied, and it does not correct metadata errors. Unmount it before running e2fsck.

XFS is not repaired by applying ext-family logic. Its mount process performs recovery when needed, and its repair workflow uses XFS-specific tooling. Do not run e2fsck on an XFS device.
Confirm that the target is XFS
findmnt -no SOURCE,FSTYPE,OPTIONS /path/to/problem
lsblk -f
Proceed only when the output identifies XFS and you have the correct source device.
Unmount and perform a non-writing assessment
Stop writers and unmount the filesystem. Follow the xfs_repair procedure documented for your distribution. Many installations provide a no-modification assessment option before the write-capable pass; use that mode first when supported by the installed tool.
sudo xfs_repair -n /dev/sdXN
Review the result and your backup status before running the corresponding repair command without the no-modification option. XFS repair can require additional recovery steps for severe damage, so follow the tool’s messages and distribution documentation rather than substituting ext4 commands.
Other filesystems
For Btrfs, F2FS, exFAT, NTFS, network filesystems, and other types, select the checker native to the detected filesystem. The generic fsck command may dispatch to a helper, but options, mount requirements, journal behavior, and recovery risks differ. Read the current manual for that helper and keep the target offline whenever its documentation requires it.
Why forcing a read-write remount is risky
A command such as the following changes mount state; it does not repair corrupted metadata.

sudo mount -o remount,rw /path/to/mount
Use a remount only after the underlying check has completed and logs no longer show the condition that triggered protection. If the kernel is still reporting I/O failures, a successful remount can expose the filesystem to more writes while the device is failing. That can turn recoverable files into a larger loss and obscure the original evidence.
Common failures and what they mean
“fsck: device is mounted”
The checker detected that the target is active. Re-run findmnt to confirm the source, stop processes using the mount, unmount it, and then invoke the native checker. For a root filesystem, leave the running installation and use recovery mode or a live environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Target is busy” during unmount
Applications, terminals whose current directory is inside the mount, containers, indexers, or automated jobs may still hold references. Stop those users and change any shell working directories away from the mount before retrying. A busy target is a coordination problem, not evidence that forcing a repair is safe.
The filesystem becomes read-only again
Capture fresh output from dmesg -T and journalctl -k. Recurring corruption messages suggest the repair did not address every issue or that new damage is occurring. Recurring I/O, timeout, or reset messages shift the priority to hardware and data preservation.
The device name changed after reboot
Do not assume a name such as /dev/sda2 remains attached to the same volume. Use UUIDs, labels, and the current lsblk -f tree to identify the partition on each boot. Verify the filesystem type again before selecting a checker.
A read-only mount still appears to have changed something
On ext4, journal replay can account for writes during a nominally read-only mount. Unmount it and use ro,noload when a non-replaying inspection is required.
Quick Recap
Post-repair validation checklist
- Confirm the expected source, filesystem type, and mount options with
findmnt. - Review new kernel messages for corruption, journal, checksum, timeout, and I/O errors.
- Verify that applications can create and update a harmless test file only after the filesystem is considered healthy; remove the test file afterward.
- Check that the important files you expected to preserve are readable and that services start normally.
- Schedule replacement, vendor diagnostics, or a deeper storage investigation if hardware errors recur.
Minimal decision flow
- Preserve important data and stop unnecessary writes.
- Identify the source, mount point, and filesystem type.
- Read kernel logs and separate filesystem symptoms from hardware I/O symptoms.
- For a separate ext volume, unmount it; for root, boot recovery or a live environment.
- Run the native checker in a no-change mode where supported.
- Perform a write-capable repair only after confirming the target and backup position.
- Remount or reboot, then validate mount options and logs.
- If errors persist, stop forcing remounts and investigate the storage device or underlying platform.
