A free game that will not start is usually blocked by one of six things: a platform outage, an account or license problem, unmet system requirements, outdated software, damaged installation files, or another program interfering with launch. Work through those possibilities in that order, beginning with checks that do not delete data. The right fix depends on your device, storefront, the affected game, and what happens after you select Play.
Before changing anything, note whether the failure affects one title or every game, which launcher or console is involved, whether the game window appears briefly, and the exact error code or message. That information determines which branch below is relevant.
Start with a five-minute diagnosis
Do not reinstall immediately. A reinstall cannot repair a platform outage, an expired entitlement, or a computer that does not meet the game’s minimum requirements. Record these observations first:

- Scope: Does one free game fail, or do several games fail?
- Trigger: Does selecting Play do nothing, show a launcher briefly, close with an error, freeze, or return to the dashboard?
- Account: Are you signed in to the account that claimed or installed the game?
- Location: Is the game on an internal drive or external storage?
- Message: Capture the exact wording, number, and any lock or warning icon.
One failed title usually points toward its files, settings, requirements, or entitlement. Every title failing on the same platform makes an outage, system update, storage, account, or background-software problem more likely.

1. Check service status before changing local files
Launchers and console networks can be unavailable or degraded. When that happens, verification, cache clearing, and reinstalling will not restore access. Check the platform’s official service-status page and look for incidents affecting sign-in, downloads, game launching, or account services. Epic’s launcher guidance specifically places a server-status check near the start of its troubleshooting process, and PlayStation directs users to service status for some access failures.
If an incident is active, wait for the platform to report recovery, then restart the launcher or console and test again. If status is normal, continue with local checks rather than repeatedly retrying the launch button.
2. Confirm entitlement, account, and requirements
Verify that the game is still attached to the right account
“Free” does not always mean permanently available without an account check. A promotional title may require the account that claimed it; a subscription catalog title may require an active subscription and may leave the catalog; and a console lock icon can indicate that the current account cannot validate the license. Sign out and back in only after confirming the correct account, rather than creating a second account and trying to claim the game again.

Console sharing or primary-console settings can also affect access when a game was obtained by another account.
Compare the PC with the game’s minimum requirements
Open the game’s current store or publisher requirements and compare them with the actual computer: operating-system version, processor, memory, graphics hardware, graphics-driver support, and free storage. A PC below minimum requirements can fail to launch or run poorly; requirements vary by game, so do not assume that another free title’s requirements apply.
Check the exact edition and operating-system architecture. A computer that launches older games may still lack a required graphics feature or runtime for a newer title. Consider hardware changes only after identifying a specific shortfall in the game’s published requirements. The available guidance does not support a generic upgrade recommendation for an unspecified game.

3. Update every relevant layer
Install updates for the game, its launcher or store client, the operating system, and the graphics driver where applicable. Epic lists launcher updates and graphics drivers in its PC checklist; Capcom’s Steam guidance also calls for current Windows and graphics drivers. Restart the computer after a driver installation when the vendor requests it.

- Close the game and launcher completely, including any icon still running in the notification area.
- Install pending operating-system updates and restart.
- Open the launcher and let it finish its own update before starting the game.
- Install the latest driver offered for the computer’s graphics hardware. Use the manufacturer’s normal installation process and restart if prompted.
- Update the game itself, then test once before making another change.
On a console, open the system-update area and apply pending firmware updates. A game update and a system update can be separate; install both when offered.
4. Repair damaged or missing game files
File verification is an appropriate early PC fix when a download was interrupted, a file was quarantined, or an update left an incomplete installation. It compares the local installation with the storefront’s records and replaces what is missing. It is less destructive than manually deleting a game folder.
Steam
- Open Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish; Steam warns that verification can take several minutes.
Start the game only after Steam reports completion. Steam’s missing-executable guidance identifies damaged or missing files and antivirus interference as possible causes, so verification is preferable to manually removing folders as a first step.
EA app
Open the game’s menu in the EA app and choose Repair. Let the repair finish before launching. If the app cannot complete the operation, restart the computer, confirm that the client is updated, and retry while no other game process is running.

Use the game’s launcher menu to select its built-in verification option. Epic’s checklist also includes updating the launcher, confirming launcher requirements, clearing the launcher cache, and updating graphics drivers. Clear the cache only through Epic’s current instructions, then restart the launcher and test the title.

Epic documentation mentions administrator mode and disabling fullscreen optimizations in a section focused on low frame rates. Treat those as targeted performance experiments, not universal launch fixes. Do not change them before checking status, requirements, updates, and files.
5. Remove software conflicts without weakening security
Overlays, capture tools, hardware monitors, RGB utilities, aggressive startup programs, and other background applications can interfere with a game executable or its launcher. Close likely conflicts and try again. If ordinary closing does not help, follow the platform or publisher’s official clean-boot procedure so that you can identify a conflicting service systematically.
Security software can sometimes mistake a game executable for a threat. Do not leave antivirus or other protection disabled. If its event log shows a specific block, use the security vendor’s instructions to create a narrow exception for the verified game file or folder, then restore normal protection and retest. Remove the exception if it does not resolve the launch failure.

PC-specific launch paths
When only one Steam game fails
Check requirements, update Windows and the graphics driver, close background programs, and verify the game’s installed files. If Steam reports a missing executable again, inspect the security software’s quarantine or event history for that particular file. Restore only a file you obtained through the official installation and verify the files afterward.
When the Epic launcher itself will not cooperate
Check service status, install any launcher update, confirm the launcher meets its own system requirements, clear its cache using Epic’s current procedure, and update the graphics driver. Disable background applications for a controlled test. Reinstall the launcher only after these steps fail; reinstalling the client is different from reinstalling every game and may preserve game files depending on the installation location.

When a launcher opens but the game closes immediately
Use the requirements and driver checks first, then verify or repair files. Capture any crash dialog rather than repeatedly pressing Play. A clean-boot test can distinguish a game problem from an overlay or security block. Do not infer that administrator mode or fullscreen-optimization changes are required unless the platform’s guidance or a specific error points there.

For PlayStation and Xbox, the least destructive sequence is update, restart, power cycle, storage check, and only then reinstall. EA’s console guidance also recommends disconnecting attached USB devices during troubleshooting. Remove external drives or accessories temporarily, restart, and test with only the essential controller and display connection attached.
Power-cycle procedure
- Close the game and shut down the console using its normal power option.
- Wait until the console is fully off, not merely in rest or standby mode.
- Disconnect power briefly, reconnect it, and start the console.
- Install any pending system or game update and try the title again.
Do not interrupt an update or repeatedly remove power while the system is writing data.
Storage location
If the game is installed on external storage, move it to internal storage and test again. EA identifies this as a useful step in the cited console cases. A storage move can expose a failing drive or connection without immediately deleting the installation.

Restart the console, confirm that system software is current, and use Restore Licenses when a lock or ownership error appears. If the title still fails, delete and redownload it from the correct account. For a PS5 game installed on USB extended storage, move it to internal storage before redownloading.

Reserve those options for persistent problems and follow Sony’s on-screen instructions precisely; they are not the first response to a single failed launch. Before deleting anything, confirm that saved data is synchronized or backed up through the options available for your account and game.

What a lock icon means
A padlock generally signals that the console cannot validate the current account’s license. Check account ownership, transaction history, subscription status, title availability, and console-sharing settings. Restoring licenses addresses a recognition problem; it cannot make a subscription title available after it has left the catalog or revive access for an account that never claimed it.
Xbox
The Xbox steps described here come from EA’s cross-platform support guidance rather than a general Microsoft troubleshooting article. Install system updates, disconnect USB devices, restart, and power-cycle the console. If the problem persists, reinstall the game and try internal storage instead of an external drive.
EA also lists clearing the alternate MAC address and deleting local saved data as possible steps. Treat these as advanced actions. Clearing local saved data can affect the copy stored on the console, so read the current Xbox prompts, confirm synchronization, and follow current support guidance before accepting a deletion. Do not choose it merely because an ordinary restart was inconvenient.
Nintendo Switch
Check for an update under System Settings and follow the console’s prompts. The update number shown can vary by region and by the date of the support page you are reading.
Nintendo’s Korean support page reports that version 23.0.1, released October 1, 2026, fixed slow software launch, suspension, and closing times associated with version 23.0.0. Nintendo’s Japan page reports version 23.0.0 released September 10, 2026. These regional reports should not be treated as a universal claim that every console displays the same version at the same time; check the version offered by your own console and region.
Use the failure pattern to choose the next step

Reinstall only after the reversible checks
Reinstalling consumes bandwidth and can remove local configuration, so use it after status, entitlement, requirements, updates, file repair, conflicts, and storage checks. Confirm that saved data is synchronized or backed up before deleting a console installation. On PC, use the launcher’s uninstall and install controls rather than manually deleting folders; a manual deletion can leave settings or registrations behind and makes diagnosis harder.
After reinstalling, launch once with overlays and optional background tools closed. If the clean installation fails in exactly the same way, the cause is less likely to be a damaged download and more likely to be account access, requirements, a driver or operating-system issue, platform availability, or a reproducible compatibility problem.
Prepare a useful support report
Contact the platform or publisher when the documented steps do not resolve the problem. Include:
- Device model and operating-system or console-system version.
- Game name, edition, storefront or launcher, and installation drive.
- The account or subscription context, without sharing passwords or security codes.
- Exact error code or message and when it appears.
- Whether one game or every game is affected.
- The steps that reliably reproduce the failure.
- What you already tried, including verification, repair, updates, storage moves, or reinstalling.
- A screenshot or short video when the failure is visual.
PlayStation specifically asks for the error, a description, reproducible steps, and a screenshot or video when possible. The same information helps support teams for other platforms separate an account problem from a local installation or hardware problem.
