Fortnite update problems have different causes, so the right fix depends on whether the update is downloading slowly, refusing to start, failing during installation, or crashing afterward. First check Epic’s service status and your platform’s known-issues page. Then follow the platform-specific steps below: adjust the Epic Games Launcher and network for slow PC downloads, verify files and storage for installation errors, and use cache, system-update, and power-cycle steps on consoles.
Identify the problem before changing settings
Write down the exact symptom and any error text. “The update is slow,” “the update will not begin,” “corrupted data was found,” and “the game crashes” are separate failure modes. Also note whether you play on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or mobile. Epic’s recommended actions and menu labels differ by platform.
| Symptom | Most useful first checks | Where the fix usually applies |
|---|---|---|
| Download is unusually slow | Epic service status, connection type, launcher speed limit, cache, DNS, proxy | PC, primarily Epic Games Launcher |
| Update does not start | Platform update command, launcher restart, known issues, available storage | PC, console, and mobile |
| Installation or corrupted-file error | Verify files, check free space and date/time, try another drive if necessary | PC; console procedures are different |
| Fortnite crashes after updating | Exact error, requirements, file verification, drivers, cache, background apps | PC and consoles, with separate procedures |
Search the exact error text in Epic’s Help Center and check its known-issues information before making extensive changes. A temporary service problem can make a local fix irrelevant. Live service status changes, so check it when the problem occurs rather than relying on an earlier outage report.

1. Check Epic’s service status
Open Epic’s current server-status page and look for incidents affecting Fortnite, downloads, authentication, or the Epic Games Store. If an incident is active, wait for service recovery and retry before changing DNS, reinstalling, or deleting files.
2. Test the connection
- Use wired Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi when your computer and router support it. A cable can remove wireless interference, but it cannot increase the speed supplied by your internet plan.
- If possible, try another connection briefly. A different network helps distinguish a home-network problem from an Epic or ISP problem.
- Pause other large downloads, cloud-sync jobs, streams, and game updates on the same connection.
- Restart the router and computer if the connection is unstable, then test the Fortnite download again.
Do not infer a fault from the displayed megabytes-per-second number alone. Launcher speeds can fluctuate as files are downloaded, checked, and written to disk.
3. Clear the device cache
Close Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher completely, including any launcher process still running in the notification area, then clear the device cache using the operating system’s normal cache procedure. Restart the computer and launch the update again. Cache-clearing instructions vary by operating system; avoid deleting the Fortnite installation folder.

4. Turn off the Epic Games Launcher download limit
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Settings.
- Find the download-throttling or download-speed-limit option.
- Make sure the limit is disabled, then restart the launcher.
If you intentionally limit downloads to protect other users on your network, leave the limit enabled and choose a value appropriate for your connection. A limit that is set too low can look like a faulty update.
5. Check blocked Epic domains
Security software, a firewall, parental-control service, or a managed network can block domains required by the launcher. Temporarily test with the relevant Epic domains allowlisted according to Epic’s current support instructions. Re-enable protection after testing and keep only the narrowly required exceptions.
6. Flush DNS or try another DNS service
A stale or failing DNS resolver can prevent the launcher from reaching download services. Flush the DNS cache using your operating system’s network instructions, restart the launcher, and retry. If the problem continues, test a reputable public DNS resolver by following Epic’s current DNS guidance. Record your previous DNS settings so you can restore them if the change does not help.
7. Disable an unnecessary proxy
A proxy configured in Windows or on a managed network can interfere with launcher connections. Check the system proxy settings and disable a proxy only if you do not need it for work, school, or another required service. Restart the launcher after changing the setting.

When a wired cable is worth trying
Epic specifically suggests wired Ethernet for slow launcher downloads. It is useful when Wi-Fi signal quality, interference, or congestion is the bottleneck and your device has a compatible network port or adapter. Cable category or brand is not a Fortnite requirement, and a cable will not fix an Epic outage, an ISP limit, or a full drive.
Make Fortnite check for an update
Use the update command for your platform. Menu names can change with system software versions, so treat the following paths as the current Epic-documented pattern and confirm the label shown on your device.
PC: Epic Games Launcher
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and sign in.
- Open Library.
- Launch Fortnite. The launcher checks for an available update and should begin it before the game opens.
- If nothing happens, exit the launcher completely, reopen it, and check the Library entry again.
Confirm that the launcher is online and that the installation drive has enough free space for the download, temporary files, and the unpacked update.
PlayStation
- Open your game Library.
- Highlight Fortnite.
- Open the options menu and choose Check for Update.
If the console reports that the game is current but Fortnite still behaves as if it is outdated, check for a console system update and restart the console.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Xbox
- Open My games & apps.
- Open Manage or the updates area.
- Select Fortnite and choose its available Update option.
Leave the console connected to the network while the update is queued. A full storage device can prevent an update from starting even when the download itself is small.
Nintendo Switch
- Highlight Fortnite on the HOME menu.
- Open the software-options menu.
- Choose Software Update, then Via the Internet.
Install any pending Switch system update as well. If the software is archived or the microSD card has storage errors, the console may need additional storage troubleshooting.
Mobile devices
Use the store or distribution method through which Fortnite was installed and check for an available app update. Also install pending Android or iOS system updates, keep sufficient free storage, and use a stable Wi-Fi connection. Store labels and Fortnite availability vary by device, region, and distribution method, so follow the update prompt shown on your phone or tablet.

Repair installation errors and corrupted files on PC
Verify Fortnite’s files before reinstalling
Epic’s verification tool checks whether installed files are damaged or differ from the expected versions and repairs them. Epic states that your saved data will not be affected.
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Library.
- Find Fortnite and open its three-dot or menu button.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for verification and any repair download to finish, then start Fortnite.
Verification can take time because the launcher must inspect files and may need to replace damaged data. Do not interrupt it by shutting down the computer or removing the drive.
“Corrupted data was found in game files”
Along with verification, check two easy-to-miss causes identified by Epic:
- Date and time: Make sure the operating system date, time, and time zone are correct and set to synchronize automatically where appropriate.
- Free space: Check the drive that contains Fortnite and the launcher’s temporary-data location. Updates need working space in addition to the final installed size.
After correcting either issue, restart the launcher and run Verify again.
Installation error when closing Fortnite
Epic associates this type of installation error with corrupt files or a hard-drive problem. Verify Fortnite first. If verification repeatedly fails, check the drive for errors using your operating system’s disk-checking tools and inspect the drive’s available space. If the drive remains suspect, try installing Fortnite on another healthy drive. Moving the installation is preferable to repeatedly forcing writes to a drive that may be failing.
When a reinstall is justified
Reinstall only after service status, storage, and verification checks. Reinstallation requires a complete download and may take substantially longer than repairing a few files. Before removing Fortnite, confirm that you know the account credentials and that your progress is associated with the correct Epic or platform account.
Stop Fortnite from crashing on PC
Use this sequence rather than changing every setting at once. After each major step, restart Fortnite and check whether the crash returns.

1. Capture the exact error and check requirements
Search the exact crash or launch message in Epic’s Help Center. Confirm that the computer meets Fortnite’s current requirements, that Windows is updated, and that the game is installed on a drive with free space. Requirements and supported configurations can change, so do not treat an old specification list as permanent.
2. Verify the game files
Run Library → Fortnite menu → Manage → Verify in the Epic Games Launcher. This is the least destructive repair for damaged or changed files.
3. Clear the launcher cache
Exit the launcher fully, clear its cache using Epic’s current PC instructions, restart Windows, and sign in again. Cache files can become inconsistent after an interrupted update.
4. Update the graphics driver
Install the latest driver offered for your graphics hardware from its manufacturer, following the manufacturer’s normal installation process. Restart the PC afterward. If a crash began immediately after a driver change, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback option rather than downloading drivers from an unknown source.
5. Run the launcher as administrator
Close the Epic Games Launcher, right-click its shortcut, and choose Run as administrator for a test. This can expose a permissions problem, but it should not be the default solution for every crash. Keep normal user permissions when elevation makes no difference.
6. Reduce conflicts from background applications
Close overlays, recording tools, hardware monitors, and other nonessential background applications one at a time. A clean startup test can reveal a conflict without permanently disabling security software. Re-enable applications after testing and keep your security protection active.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
7. Check the drive and consider another installation location
Use the operating system’s drive-error checking tool. Repeated crashes during loading or updates can occur when the installation drive has file-system errors or is running out of space. If the drive checks out but the problem continues, Epic suggests trying another drive.

Console storage and file systems are managed differently from a PC installation, so do not use PC file-verification instructions on a console.
Check known issues and updates
Review Epic’s known-issue information, then install both the Fortnite update and the console’s system update. A game can crash because the console software is behind even when Fortnite itself is current.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Clear the platform cache
Use the cache-clearing procedure for your specific PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch model. Cache menus and power states differ by generation. Cache clearing should not be confused with deleting saved data; follow the platform’s wording carefully.
Power-cycle the console
Close Fortnite, fully power down the console, disconnect power if the platform’s standard procedure calls for it, wait briefly, reconnect, and start the console again. A full power cycle can clear a temporary state that a normal game exit leaves behind.
Reinstall when the local installation is damaged
If updates, cache clearing, and a power cycle do not help, reinstall Fortnite through the console’s normal library or store controls. Ensure the console has enough free storage and avoid shutting it down during the download or installation.
Escalate unresolved platform faults
Epic notes that some console-level technical problems need to go to PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo support. Contact the platform manufacturer when the console reports storage, system-software, account, or download-service errors that affect other games as well as Fortnite.

Do not confuse performance stutters with update failures
Hitches and low frame rates after an update are performance symptoms, not evidence that the download is slow or that files are corrupt. Epic’s guidance for older PCs says an SSD or at least 6 GB of RAM may help reduce hitches and stutters in the relevant Performance Mode scenario. That is a hardware consideration, not a universal Fortnite requirement and not a remedy for a failed update.
Epic also describes a Performance Mode setup in which removing high-resolution textures saves over 14 GB and leaves an installation described in that article as 17 GB. Those figures are time-sensitive support guidance, not a promise about every current build. Check the current in-game and launcher options before removing optional content, and keep enough space for future updates.
A practical decision tree
- Is Epic or your platform reporting an outage? Wait for service recovery if yes.
- Is the problem a slow PC download? Test wired or alternate connectivity, clear cache, disable the launcher speed limit, then check domains, DNS, and proxy settings.
- Does the update not start? Use the platform-specific update command, restart the launcher or console, and check free storage.
- Is there an installation or corruption message? On PC, run Verify, correct date/time, check drive space, and test another drive if the error persists.
- Does Fortnite crash? Follow the PC crash sequence or the separate console cache, update, power-cycle, and reinstall sequence.
- Is the symptom only stuttering? Treat it as performance troubleshooting; investigate storage, memory, graphics settings, and optional high-resolution content instead of repeatedly reinstalling.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
- The exact error persists after the platform’s documented update, cache, verification, and restart steps.
- Other games or applications show the same storage, network, or system-software failure.
- The drive reports errors, disappears, makes unusual noises, or repeatedly corrupts files.
- The console or account displays a platform-service or account error rather than a Fortnite-specific message.
- You need help with a managed school, work, or parental-control network that you cannot change yourself.
When contacting support, include the platform and model, operating-system version, Fortnite version if shown, exact error text, when the issue began, available storage, and the steps already attempted. This prevents repeating unrelated fixes and helps support separate an account, platform, network, or game-file problem.
