Fortnite crashes, low FPS, long loading, and high ping have different causes, so the fastest fix is to identify the symptom and platform before changing settings. First check Epic’s live service-status and known-issues channels, then use the platform-specific steps below. PC players should verify files, clear the Epic Games Launcher cache, update graphics drivers, and reduce graphics load before reinstalling anything. Console players should update the game and system, clear the console cache, and power-cycle or reinstall only if necessary. For online lag, measure packet loss and jitter—not just average ping—and test Ethernet or a less congested connection.

Start by identifying what is actually failing

Write down the platform (Windows PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch), when the issue began, the exact error text, and whether it occurs at launch, while loading into a match, or during play. Also note whether it happens every time or only occasionally. This prevents a network problem from being treated as a graphics problem, or a game-service outage from being treated as a faulty computer.

Symptom Most likely category Best first checks
The game closes, freezes, shows a black screen, or displays an error Crash, files, drivers, system resources, or platform software Search the exact error, check service status, verify files (PC), and install updates
The game runs but feels jerky or has a low frame rate (FPS) Graphics settings, driver, CPU/GPU load, background programs, or cooling Set Quality Presets to Low, keep 3D Resolution at 100%, check drivers and temperatures
Players teleport, actions arrive late, or the ping indicator is high Latency, packet loss, jitter, congestion, Wi-Fi, ISP, or routing Check status, measure loss and jitter, then test Ethernet and household load
Loading or login takes a long time Service connection, background applications, drivers, requirements, or cache Check the exact login message, update drivers, close background apps, and clear console cache where applicable

Check Epic’s service status before changing your device

Review Epic’s Fortnite Community Issues board, its status account, and the Epic Games Status page when the problem starts. These channels can identify an outage, maintenance, matchmaking problem, or known bug that local troubleshooting cannot repair. Recheck them when you publish or troubleshoot because the information changes. If the service is disrupted, changing router settings, reinstalling Fortnite, or buying hardware will not restore the service.

Search Epic Games Support for the exact error message, including capitalization and punctuation. “Fortnite crashes” is too broad; an exact message can point to a specific support procedure. Keep a note of the error, platform, game mode or Fortnite experience, and the time it occurred for any support request.

Fix Fortnite crashes and launch errors on a Windows PC

Epic’s PC troubleshooting sequence is an escalation path, not a promise that every step fixes every cause. Start with reversible checks and move to reinstalling or deleting local data only after the earlier steps fail.

  1. Search the exact error. Enter the complete message in Epic Games Support. If no message appears, record whether the launcher closes, Fortnite freezes, or the game fails before the main menu.
  2. Confirm the minimum requirements. Compare your CPU, graphics hardware, memory, operating-system version, and available storage with Fortnite’s current requirements. Requirements can change, so use Epic’s current listing rather than an old forum post.
  3. Verify the game files. In Epic Games Launcher, open your Library, select Fortnite’s three-dot menu, choose Manage, and select Verify. The launcher checks for damaged or missing files and downloads replacements. Your installed game is not removed by verification.
  4. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache. Exit the launcher completely, including its notification-area process, then follow Epic’s current cache-clearing instructions for Windows. Reopen the launcher and try Fortnite again.
  5. Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver from your graphics-card or laptop manufacturer. Restart Windows after installation, even if the installer does not insist on it.
  6. Run the launcher as administrator. Close it, right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut, choose Run as administrator, and test. Administrator mode can help with a permission problem, but it is not a general performance setting.
  7. Disable background applications. Close overlays, recording tools, browsers with heavy tabs, hardware-monitoring utilities, and other programs that may hook into a game or consume memory. If the crash disappears, re-enable programs one at a time to identify the conflict.
  8. Check the drive for errors. Use Windows’ drive-error checking tools on the drive containing Fortnite. A failing or severely full drive can cause read errors, freezes, or failed updates.
  9. Try another drive. If Fortnite is installed on a drive that is nearly full, slow, or reporting errors, install it on a different healthy drive and test again. This is a diagnostic step; it does not prove that a faster drive is required for every PC.
  10. Follow Epic’s Fortnite-folder exclusion procedure. Epic documents specific security-software exclusion steps for the Fortnite folder. Use the exact folder paths and exclusions in its current instructions, and avoid broadly disabling antivirus protection.
  11. Reinstall the Epic Games Launcher, then Fortnite. Do this only after verification, cache clearing, driver updates, and the other checks. Reinstalling consumes time and bandwidth and will not fix a service outage or an unrelated hardware fault.
  12. Remove the local FortniteGame folder only as a final local-data step. Epic lists this later in its sequence because it removes local configuration and cached data. Close Fortnite and the launcher first, follow Epic’s current folder path, and expect to redo local settings afterward.

If the complete sequence does not resolve the issue, Epic directs users to their computer or hardware manufacturer. Include the exact error, Windows version, graphics-driver version, crash timing, and the steps already attempted so support can avoid repeating them.

Fix freezes, black screens, and low FPS on PC

Reduce the graphics load without lowering resolution unnecessarily

For black screens, visual corruption, freezes, or poor performance, first confirm that the PC meets Fortnite’s minimum requirements and verify the game files. In Fortnite’s video settings, set Quality Presets to Low and leave 3D Resolution at 100%. Test a complete match or the same reproducible scene, then raise quality settings gradually if stability returns. Epic cautions that results depend on the hardware and that its performance steps may improve performance only slightly or not at all.

Try Performance Mode when DirectX 12 is unstable

If crashes, freezing, or black screens begin while using DirectX 12, Epic says Performance Mode may help. Epic also documents the launcher argument -d3d12 -es31. Use the current Epic instructions for applying that argument, change one setting at a time, and remove it if it does not help. A rendering-mode change cannot repair packet loss or an Epic service outage.

Make sure Fortnite uses the high-performance GPU

Laptops and PCs with integrated and dedicated graphics can launch Fortnite on the lower-power GPU. In Windows graphics settings or the laptop manufacturer’s control panel, assign Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher to the high-performance GPU. Keep the laptop connected to its normal power adapter while testing; battery-saving modes can reduce clocks.

Check heat, airflow, and power settings

If trouble appears only after extended play, inspect vents and fans for dust, make sure the computer is on a hard, unobstructed surface, and use a well-ventilated space. Check Windows power mode and return it to a performance-oriented setting while gaming. Excess heat can cause clock-rate reductions, instability, or shutdowns; cleaning airflow is safer than immediately changing advanced voltage settings.

Address persistent frame-rate stutter

  • Install current graphics drivers and restart Windows.
  • Verify Fortnite’s files again after a failed update or crash.
  • Close background programs and overlays that consume CPU, GPU, memory, or disk bandwidth.
  • Use lower graphics settings and test Performance Mode.
  • Check available memory and storage. For older systems, Epic says installing Fortnite on an SSD or having 6 GB of RAM or more can help the game fit in memory and reduce hitches or stutters. This is conditional, device-specific guidance, not a universal upgrade requirement.

Do not buy a graphics card, RAM, or storage before completing the free checks. A low FPS problem and a high-ping problem can feel similar, but extra graphics hardware will not reduce ISP latency.

  2. Install every available Fortnite update.
  3. Install the console’s system update.
  4. Clear the console cache using the current procedure for your PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch model. Cache menus and power procedures differ by model; use the platform’s documented steps.
  5. Fully power-cycle the console: close Fortnite, shut the console down rather than leaving it in sleep or standby, disconnect power only if the platform’s procedure calls for it, wait, reconnect, and start it again.
  6. Reinstall Fortnite through the console’s own game-management process if crashes continue after updates and cache clearing.

Epic notes that console troubleshooting is limited by the closed platform. If the problem remains after updates, cache clearing, power cycling, and a reinstall, contact PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo support. Provide the exact message, console model, system version, and whether other games show the same behavior.

Fix long loading times and “Unable to login to Fortnite Servers. Please try again later”

Epic documents this message as appearing when Fortnite cannot load quickly enough to connect to its servers. It does not prove that every long loading screen has the same cause, so treat it as a connection-to-login symptom rather than a universal diagnosis.

On PC

  • Install the current graphics driver.
  • Close background applications, downloads, overlays, and recording tools.
  • Confirm that the PC meets Fortnite’s minimum requirements.
  • Check Epic’s service status and search the exact message.

On a console

Clear the platform cache first. If the message remains, continue with Epic’s connection troubleshooting and check for both Fortnite and system updates. Reinstall only after those checks.

A long initial load can also be affected by storage health, available free space, or a service-side incident. Do not assume that replacing a drive or router is the first answer; identify whether the delay is at game launch, account login, matchmaking, or loading a particular Fortnite experience.

Fix Fortnite lag, high ping, packet loss, and jitter

Understand what ping measures

Epic Games Support defines latency, also called ping, as “the time it takes for data to travel from your device to a Fortnite server and back.” It is measured in milliseconds. Congestion in your home or ISP network, the route between you and Epic, and matchmaking-server selection can all change it. A matchmaking region may contain several subregions, and matches can run in different datacenters within a subregion, so ping can vary even when you have not changed hardware.

Average ping alone is not enough. Packet loss means some packets never arrive, while jitter is variation in delivery time. Epic’s troubleshooting guide says packet loss should be 0%; consistent loss above about 1% can cause in-game problems. That figure is Epic’s support threshold, not a universal guarantee for every network or game mode.

Run a 50-packet test to an Epic subregion endpoint

Use the subregion endpoint listed in Epic’s current latency guide. On Windows, open Command Prompt and run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ping -n 50 <Epic-subregion-endpoint>

On macOS, open Terminal and run:

ping -c 50 <Epic-subregion-endpoint>

Replace the value in angle brackets with the endpoint from Epic’s guide. Record the average time, the percentage of lost packets, and how widely individual results vary. Repeat while the household is using the connection if lag appears only during streaming, uploads, or large downloads.

This test uses ICMP, while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP. Epic cautions that some networks prioritize ICMP differently, so a clean ICMP result does not rule out a problem on the gameplay path. Include that limitation when interpreting the result.

Result pattern What it suggests Next action
0% loss, low and stable times, but the game still lags The ICMP path looks healthy, but UDP routing, the selected experience, or the game service may differ Check the in-game ping, experience name, and Epic status; report the ICMP/UDP distinction
Consistent loss above about 1% A connection problem likely affects play Test Ethernet, pause competing traffic, restart network equipment, and contact the ISP if it persists
Large swings between replies High jitter or intermittent congestion Repeat under household load and inspect Wi-Fi placement, band selection, and router QoS
High but stable times Distance, routing, or matchmaking subregion may be contributing Test another in-game matchmaking subregion, understanding the queue and match-quality trade-offs

Work through the practical network fixes

  1. Check for outages. Review Epic’s status channels and ask your internet service provider about a local outage or degraded service.
  2. Restart the modem and router. Shut them down using the manufacturer’s procedure, wait for them to reconnect fully, and then retest.
  3. Test wired Ethernet. Connect the PC or console directly to the router with an Ethernet cable for a controlled comparison. Confirm that the device has an Ethernet port or use a compatible adapter. Wired testing can remove Wi-Fi interference and signal loss; it cannot fix ISP routing or a Fortnite outage.
  4. Pause competing traffic. Stop large downloads and uploads, cloud synchronization, video streams, and other high-bandwidth activity. Compare an idle test with one taken while the household is busy.
  5. Try the in-game matchmaking-region preference. A different subregion can lower ping when routing is poor, but Epic warns that it may produce longer queues and reduced match quality. Return to the automatic choice if the alternative is worse.
  6. Use router QoS or gaming mode if available. Configure it conservatively to prioritize the gaming device. Router interfaces vary, and QoS cannot create bandwidth that the ISP does not provide.
  7. Improve router placement. Put the router in an open, central position, away from major obstructions and sources of interference.
  8. Test both Wi-Fi bands. The 2.4 GHz band reaches farther but is often more crowded. The 5 GHz band is generally faster over a shorter range. Choose the band that produces lower loss and steadier jitter at the device’s actual location.
  9. Update router firmware. Install the manufacturer’s current firmware and retest after the router restarts.
  10. Test another router only when a fault is plausible. Borrowing a known-good router can isolate failing hardware. It is a diagnostic last resort, not a general requirement for Fortnite.

What to send to your ISP or Epic

Provide the endpoint tested, the 50-packet results, average latency, packet-loss percentage, jitter observations, the in-game ping, your matchmaking region, the Fortnite experience where the issue occurs, and whether Ethernet changed the result. State that the command used ICMP while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP. This gives support a reproducible network description instead of only “the game is laggy.”

Choose the least costly intervention first

Action Cost and reversibility Use it when
Check status, exact error, requirements, and updates Free; fully reversible Any crash, login, loading, or lag symptom
Change graphics settings, close background apps, or switch Performance Mode Free; reversible Low FPS, freezes, black screens, or heat-related instability
Verify files or clear launcher/console cache Free; generally reversible, though local cache is rebuilt Corrupted updates, launch errors, or unexplained loading problems
Ethernet test, router restart, QoS, or Wi-Fi-band comparison Usually free; reversible High ping, packet loss, or jitter
Reinstall Fortnite or the launcher Uses time, storage, and bandwidth Earlier file, cache, driver, and platform checks failed
SSD, additional memory, or replacement router Purchase and compatibility risk Only after diagnostics indicate an older PC storage/memory limitation or a possibly faulty router

An internal SSD is a narrower option for an older PC with hitches or stutters, because Epic says SSD storage may help in that situation. A replacement router is appropriate only when testing suggests the current unit is faulty. Neither purchase is a substitute for checking status, files, drivers, requirements, or packet loss.

When the problem is still unresolved

Escalate with a compact record: platform and model, operating-system or console version, Fortnite version if shown, exact error, start date, whether the issue is reproducible, the affected Fortnite experience, service-status result, and every troubleshooting step already completed. For network reports, add the endpoint, 50-packet output, packet loss, jitter, in-game ping, matchmaking region, and whether Ethernet or household-load testing changed the result. For PC crashes, include hardware specifications, graphics-driver version, temperatures if relevant, and whether Fortnite works after a clean background-app test.

Use Epic Games Support for Fortnite-specific errors and service or gameplay symptoms. Use PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo support for unresolved console behavior, and your computer or hardware manufacturer for persistent PC hardware, driver, or thermal failures. This routing keeps each support team focused on the part of the system it can actually change.

Bottom line

Diagnose before you reinstall or spend money: service status and exact errors first; platform updates, file verification, cache, drivers, and graphics settings next; network measurements and Ethernet testing for lag; reinstallations and hardware changes only when the evidence points there. Crashes, low FPS, long loading, and high ping can share a screen but require different fixes.
