Most Fitbit problems fall into two separate categories: the device is recording data but cannot transfer it to your phone, or the phone is syncing normally but a measurement such as heart rate or sleep-related vitals is missing. Start by identifying which case you have. For sync failures, keep the Fitbit beside the phone, prevent another nearby phone from holding the connection, request a manual sync, then check Bluetooth, internet access, permissions, power settings, updates and charge. For missing readings, check wrist fit, movement, sleep conditions, settings and whether your model supports that metric.
The sequence below follows Google’s documented troubleshooting order. App names and screen labels can change between releases, so use the current device or connection screen on your phone when a label differs.
First decide whether this is a sync problem or a tracking problem
A Fitbit can store information on the device while the phone app is unable to retrieve it. In that case, the measurements may appear after the connection is repaired. A different problem occurs when the app is up to date but a particular reading was never captured or is considered unreliable. Sensor contact, arm movement, sleep duration, device settings and model capability can all affect tracking.

| Steps or other data arrive, but heart rate or sleep vitals are blank. | Metric tracking | Check wrist fit, movement, sleep conditions, settings and model support for that metric. |
| Data appears only after opening the app or interacting with a watch. | Background connectivity | Check phone power restrictions; on Pixel Watch, Battery Saver and Bedtime mode can limit background data connectivity. |
| The device will not stay connected and is nearly empty. | Power and pairing | Charge it, then retry the connection before deleting pairings or reinstalling the app. |
Google’s help guidance states: “Important: Fitbit device must remain near your phone to sync.” Treat proximity as a requirement, not merely a suggested first attempt.

Fix Fitbit syncing in the documented order
1. Put the Fitbit and phone together and check for a competing device
Place the Fitbit within a short distance of the phone and leave it there while troubleshooting. A Fitbit device can sync with only one device at a time. If you recently used a tablet, an old phone or another phone in the household, check whether that device is nearby, signed in to the same account and attempting to maintain the connection. Temporarily move it away or disable its Bluetooth connection before trying again.
This check matters even when your current phone shows Bluetooth as enabled: a second signed-in device can retain the active connection and prevent the phone you are holding from completing a sync.
2. Request a manual sync from the app
Open the Google Health app on the phone with the Fitbit nearby. Go to the device or connection screen and use its refresh, sync or equivalent control. The exact navigation labels can change, so look for the page that lists the paired Fitbit and its connection status rather than relying on an older menu name.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the app open until the request finishes. Check the “last synced” time and one recent metric, such as steps, to confirm whether new data arrived. If the time does not move, continue to the connection checks instead of repeatedly tapping refresh.
3. Reset the phone’s Bluetooth connection
- Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled in the phone’s quick settings or system Settings app.
- Turn Bluetooth off briefly.
- Turn Bluetooth on again and wait for the phone to rediscover the Fitbit.
- Return to the Google Health app and request another manual sync with the device close by.
A Fitbit sync also needs the phone to reach the service. Confirm that Wi-Fi or cellular data works by opening another online service. A phone can show a Bluetooth connection while lacking the internet access needed to upload or retrieve account data.

4. Restart both devices
Restart the Fitbit using the model’s normal power or restart control, then restart the phone. After both have fully started, enable Bluetooth, keep the devices together and retry the manual sync. Restarting clears a temporarily stuck Bluetooth or app session without deleting locally stored Fitbit data.
5. Install available updates
Check for updates in three places:
- The phone’s operating-system update screen.
- The app store page for the Google Health or Fitbit app installed on the phone.
- The Fitbit device update control in the app, when one is offered.
Install updates only when the phone has sufficient battery and a reliable internet connection. Recheck the connection after each update; a changed permission prompt or pairing request may need your confirmation.
6. Check Android permissions and power settings
On Android, open the app’s permissions in system Settings and allow the permissions the current app requests for nearby-device communication. Google’s Android guidance specifically lists Nearby devices and Location permissions for troubleshooting.
Android 11 and earlier bundles Bluetooth scanning with Location services. On those versions, granting the app permission is not enough if the phone’s main Location switch is off. Turn on Location services, retry the sync, and then review the result.
Battery Saver and other aggressive background restrictions can interrupt a connection or repeatedly produce location prompts. Temporarily turn those restrictions off while testing. If syncing works only with power saving disabled, adjust the app’s battery or background-use setting rather than leaving every phone app unrestricted.

7. Charge the Fitbit and verify the charging path
Connect the device to power and confirm that it actually shows a charging indicator. A low or empty battery can stop communication and tracking. Clean, dry contacts and reseat the device if the charge indicator does not appear.

Verify the exact Fitbit model before buying a cable; connectors are not interchangeable across every generation. A cable cannot repair Bluetooth pairing, app permissions or a wrist-sensor problem.
8. Remove stale Fitbit pairings only after the earlier checks
If the connection still fails, remove unused Fitbit devices from the account and remove obsolete Fitbit entries from the phone’s Bluetooth list. Keep the currently used device and phone together, then pair it again through the current app flow rather than adding it as a generic Bluetooth accessory.
Do not delete pairings as an opening move. Removing the wrong entry can create another setup step, while the original fault may have been a disabled permission, a competing phone or a flat battery.
9. Reinstall only as a later recovery step
Reinstalling the app is later in Google’s sequence. Before uninstalling, confirm that the phone still meets the app’s current requirements and that you can sign back in to the account. Reinstalling does not guarantee a fix for a device-side, sensor or charging fault, and it should follow the checks above rather than replace them.

Android and iPhone troubleshooting are not identical
The core sync sequence is shared, but permission screens and pairing behavior depend on the operating system. Do not apply Android’s Location requirement as a universal iPhone instruction.
| Check | Android | iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth and internet | Enable Bluetooth and verify Wi-Fi or cellular data; toggle Bluetooth off and on if needed. | Enable Bluetooth and verify Wi-Fi or cellular data; toggle Bluetooth off and on if needed. |
| App permissions | Review Nearby devices and Location permissions. Android 11 and earlier also needs the phone’s Location services enabled for Bluetooth scanning. | Review the permissions shown for the installed app in iOS Settings. Use the labels on the current phone because they can change with iOS and app releases. |
| Competing pairings | Check other Android phones, tablets or watches signed in to the account and remove stale entries if the documented sequence reaches that step. | Check other nearby Apple devices signed in to the account and remove stale Fitbit entries only after proximity, Bluetooth, restart and update checks. |
| Power management | Review Battery Saver and app background restrictions if the connection repeatedly drops. | Review any system setting that prevents the app from refreshing in the background, using current iOS labels. |
Pixel Watch: apply the watch-specific exception
A Pixel Watch is not identical to a Fitbit tracker. The sync guidance for Pixel Watch says that Battery Saver and Bedtime mode can limit background data connectivity. Data may sync after you interact with the watch or turn those modes off.
Use that advice only for Pixel Watch. Do not assume that disabling Bedtime mode is the correct fix for every Fitbit band or tracker. For another model, return to the general proximity, Bluetooth, internet, update and charge sequence.

If the app’s sync time is current and other metrics update, stop treating the issue as a Bluetooth failure. Troubleshoot the individual metric and the conditions under which it is measured.
Heart-rate readings
- Wear the band snugly enough that it does not slide, while keeping it comfortable and not painfully tight.
- Keep the sensor in steady contact with the skin. A loose fit can create gaps that prevent a reliable optical signal.
- Reduce vigorous arm movement while checking the reading. Rapid or forceful movement can interfere with the sensor signal.
- On relevant older models, open the device settings in the app and confirm that heart-rate tracking is enabled. The setting and availability vary by model.
A missing heart-rate value after these checks does not prove that syncing failed. The device may have transferred all data it successfully recorded.

Sleep-related vitals
Sleep measurements require more than an overnight connection. Check that the device was worn with skin contact, that the sleep period was long enough for the feature to record, and that movement or a loose fit did not interrupt sensing. Then perform a fresh sync and check whether the metric appears.
Not every Fitbit model supports every sleep-related vital. Confirm support for the specific model and metric before interpreting a blank field as a fault. A model limitation cannot be corrected by reinstalling the app or replacing a cable.
Other measurements
For any metric that is absent, ask three questions in order:
- Did the device have adequate contact and the right wearing conditions when the event occurred?
- Was the device able to record the metric under the movement, sleep or activity conditions present?
- Does this model include that metric, and is the relevant setting enabled?
Only after those checks should you return to sync troubleshooting. If the entire day’s data is missing, the connection branch is more likely; if one metric is missing while others are current, the tracking branch is more likely.
Common symptoms and the right next action
| Symptom | Most useful next action | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| “Last synced” time is old. | Keep the Fitbit near the phone, check another signed-in device, toggle Bluetooth and request a manual sync. | That the sensor failed or that all locally recorded data is lost. |
| Bluetooth is on, but no data arrives. | Verify Wi-Fi or cellular internet, restart both devices and install updates. | That Bluetooth alone completes account synchronization. |
| Android repeatedly asks for Location. | Review Location and Nearby devices permissions; on Android 11 or earlier, enable Location services for Bluetooth scanning. | That the same Location rule applies to every operating system. |
| Only heart rate is absent. | Adjust the fit, limit arm movement during the check and verify the heart-rate setting on supported older models. | That reinstalling the app will improve skin contact. |
| Sleep vitals are blank after a night. | Check skin contact, sleep duration, movement, recent sync and model support. | That every Fitbit records every vital. |
| Data appears after tapping the watch. | For Pixel Watch, check Battery Saver and Bedtime mode; interact with the watch or disable those modes while testing. | That this watch-specific behavior applies to every tracker. |
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Contact Google or Fitbit customer support after completing the documented checks for your platform and model. Include the phone operating-system version, app version, Fitbit model, whether another device was paired, the last successful sync time and what happened after charging and restarting. That information helps support distinguish account pairing, phone permissions, device firmware and sensor conditions.
Do not treat a factory reset, app reinstall or device replacement as a guaranteed cure. Those actions can remove configuration or create setup work, and none addresses a missing metric caused by unsupported hardware, poor skin contact or movement. Use a reset only when support or the model’s current instructions specifically direct it, and follow the on-screen warning about stored data.
Quick Recap
A short recovery checklist
- Identify whether the whole data set is stale or only one metric is missing.
- Place the Fitbit beside the phone and move other signed-in phones or tablets away.
- Open the Google Health app’s device or connection screen and request a manual sync.
- Confirm Bluetooth plus Wi-Fi or cellular internet; toggle Bluetooth once.
- Restart the Fitbit and phone.
- Update the phone, app and device when updates are available.
- On Android, review Nearby devices, Location and—on Android 11 or earlier—the main Location switch.
- Check Battery Saver and background limits; apply the Battery Saver and Bedtime checks specifically to Pixel Watch.
- Charge the device and verify the exact-model cable if it is not charging.
- Remove stale pairings, reinstall the app or seek support only after the earlier steps fail.
- For a single missing metric, check fit, movement, sleep conditions, settings and model support instead of repeating sync resets.
