If your Fitbit stats are stale or the app reports a sync error, first bring the device close to your phone, turn on Bluetooth and internet access, open the Google Health app, and try a manual sync. Check the device-specific steps below before changing Bluetooth pairings: Aria Air scales and Pixel Watches have different considerations from Fitbit trackers and watches.
Identify what is not syncing
Sync trouble can show up as stale stats, an error in the app, missing phone notifications, or an incorrect time on the device. These symptoms point to a connection problem but do not, by themselves, show that the device has failed. First identify whether you have a Fitbit tracker or watch, a Pixel Watch, or an Aria Air scale, and whether your phone is Android or iPhone/iPad.
Fitbit tracker or watch
Keep the device near the phone and open the Google Health app. Confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or cellular data are enabled, then attempt a manual sync before changing any pairing. On Android, open the app’s Connections view and pull down until a progress bar appears. The official guides give separate instructions for iPhone and iPad and Android.
Pixel Watch
Pixel Watch syncing is addressed separately in Google’s Fitbit sync guidance. Battery Saver and Bedtime modes can restrict background data, so check whether either mode is enabled if background syncing is the main problem. Use the steps for your phone platform in the official sync guide.

Aria Air scale
For Aria Air, have the Google Health app open on a nearby phone or tablet during the weigh-in, and make sure Bluetooth is on. Check the scale display for a critically low battery. Other nearby phones that are syncing can compete for Bluetooth; move them away or turn off their Bluetooth temporarily. The Aria Air troubleshooting guide covers its specific sync requirements.
Try basic connection checks before changing settings
- Move the device close to the phone. Keep the Fitbit device and phone together while testing. For a firmware update, Google advises keeping the device within 2–3 feet of the host phone and ensuring it has adequate charge; see troubleshooting a Fitbit device update.
- Check the connection. Turn on Bluetooth and connect the phone to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- Open the Google Health app and manually sync. On Android, go to Connections and pull down until the progress bar appears. On iPhone or iPad, use the sync control described in the iPhone and iPad guide.
- Refresh the app connection. If the manual sync does not start, close and reopen the app, then turn Bluetooth off and back on and try again.
Allow syncing to run in the background
If manual syncing works but automatic updates do not, check the app’s background permissions and the phone’s battery controls. Menu names differ between phone manufacturers and software versions, so use your phone’s settings search if a label below is not an exact match.

On iPhone or iPad
Confirm that the Google Health app has Bluetooth, Background App Refresh, and Cellular Data access. The iPhone and iPad sync instructions describe these permissions.

Allow background data and unrestricted mobile data for the app, and permit background usage without battery restrictions. Battery controls or data limits can interrupt automatic syncing even when the device is paired. Google’s Android sync guide and Google Health app instructions for Android cover these settings.

On Android 11 and earlier, location permission may also matter because Bluetooth scanning is bundled with location services. Google’s location-services explanation for Android phones and tablets explains that requirement.
Update the app, phone, and device
Install available updates for the Google Health app, your phone’s operating system, and the Fitbit device. If a device update will not complete, keep the device near the phone and sufficiently charged while following Google’s update troubleshooting steps. Avoid interrupting an update once it has begun.

Remove competing connections and restart
Make sure the device is not paired to another nearby phone. If other phones or tablets signed in to the same account are nearby, remove the app from them temporarily while you test. For Aria Air, also keep other syncing phones away or temporarily disable their Bluetooth.
If syncing still fails, restart both the Fitbit device and the phone, then open the app and retry the manual sync. This refreshes the connection without first discarding the existing pairing.

Re-pair only after the earlier checks fail
Re-pairing removes the old connection profile, so use it after checking proximity, permissions, updates, competing connections, and restarts. Remove the device through the app or account, then forget it in the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Set it up again from the Google Health app rather than pairing it directly from Bluetooth settings. Follow the relevant sync guide for your phone platform.
For persistent connectivity trouble on Android, clearing the Google Health app cache is another documented advanced step. Google’s Android app instructions cover app troubleshooting.
When to contact support
If the device still will not sync after these checks, contact Google Health customer support through the app or the official Help Center. Do not assume a factory reset, device replacement, or data deletion is required; use such steps only if support gives instructions for your specific model.
