If Fitbit data is missing in Google Health, first find the point where it disappears: the Fitbit device-to-phone connection, or the Google Health-to-connected-app connection. Keep the device close to your phone, confirm charge, Bluetooth and internet access, then run a manual sync. Android users should also check Nearby Devices or Location permission, background data and battery restrictions. Only after those checks should you restart, update, reconnect or reinstall.

Google’s current app name is Google Health. Older instructions and screenshots may still say Fitbit or Fitbit app because Google changed the app’s name; the troubleshooting sequence is otherwise the same.

First determine where the data disappears

A missing step count, workout, sleep record or weight can indicate two different failures. The correct fix depends on which system last shows the information.

How Fitbit syncing normally works

Most Fitbit trackers and watches use Bluetooth Low Energy to send data to a nearby phone or tablet. Google Health normally performs that exchange in the background when the device is nearby and the app is allowed to run. Opening the app can prompt a sync, and you can initiate one manually. Fitbit Aria and Aria 2 scales are different: they use Wi-Fi directly rather than the phone’s Bluetooth connection. Applying watch or tracker Bluetooth steps to one of those scales can send you down the wrong path.

A sync cannot transmit information the device never recorded, information that was erased, or account history that was not retained after a migration deadline. The checks below are designed to restore a connection and upload data that still exists on the device or in the account.

Run the basic connection and power checks

Keep the Fitbit close to the phone

Place the Fitbit within a few feet of the phone while testing. Avoid a room, floor or wall that separates the two devices. Keep the phone awake for the first attempt, open Google Health, and wait for the app to show activity. A device that is out of range may continue displaying its own readings while the phone remains on an old sync time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify Bluetooth and internet

  1. Open the phone’s quick settings or Settings app and confirm Bluetooth is on.
  2. Turn Bluetooth off, wait several seconds, then turn it on again. This resets a stalled radio connection without deleting the pairing.
  3. Confirm the phone has Wi-Fi or cellular internet. Bluetooth moves the data to the phone; an internet connection is then needed to upload it to Google Health.
  4. Keep the Fitbit beside the phone, open Google Health and try the manual sync described below.

Do not repeatedly toggle Bluetooth while the app is actively showing a connection attempt. Give each change a moment, then check whether the “last synced” time advances.

Charge a low-power device

Connect a Fitbit that is low on charge to its charger before retrying. A tracker or watch can stop communicating when its battery is nearly empty, and charging also gives you a simple way to confirm that the device is responsive. Chargers vary by Fitbit model; if you do not have a working one, obtain a charger confirmed for that exact model rather than assuming a generic cable will fit. The sync guide specifically recommends connecting the device to its charger and trying again.

Check Android permissions and background limits

Android can discover a wearable yet still prevent Google Health from syncing reliably in the background. Menu names differ among phone manufacturers and Android versions, so use the closest equivalent if a label is different.

Choose the permission that matches your Android version

Android version Permission or service used for discovery What to check
Android 12 or later Nearby Devices Settings > Apps > Google Health > Permissions > Nearby Devices. Allow it so the app can find the watch or tracker. Nearby Devices does not require turning on GPS location for this discovery.
Android 11 or earlier Location services for Bluetooth scanning Settings > Apps > Google Health > Permissions, then allow the applicable location permission. Also make sure the phone’s Location service is enabled because Bluetooth scanning is bundled with it on these versions.

The distinction is based on Android version, not on whether you want location tracking. Android 12 and newer can use Nearby Devices for wearable discovery without enabling GPS location. On Android 11 and earlier, Location services are part of the Bluetooth scanning requirement.

Allow background data

Open Settings > Apps > Google Health > Mobile data (or Data usage) and allow background data. If your phone offers a separate “Unrestricted data usage” switch, enable it when Data Saver is on. Without this allowance, Google Health may update only while you are looking at it, leaving automatic sync apparently broken.

Remove battery restrictions

Open Settings > Apps > Google Health > Battery and select the option equivalent to Unrestricted or Allow background activity. Manufacturers may call the choices Optimized, Restricted and Unrestricted, or place them under Battery > Background usage limits. Select the setting that does not suspend Google Health in the background. If you cannot locate it, use your phone maker’s support instructions because the path is not uniform across Android devices.

Temporarily disable modes that interrupt syncing

Battery Saver and Bedtime mode can limit background connectivity. Turn those modes off for the test, or interact with the Fitbit by waking its screen and taking a few steps, then open Google Health and sync. If syncing immediately resumes, add Google Health to the phone’s allowed background or exception list before re-enabling the mode.

Trigger a manual sync

With Bluetooth and internet working and the Fitbit nearby, open Google Health. On the main screen, pull down until a progress indicator appears and keep the app open while it checks the device. The current guide also describes a Connections > Sync option; use that route if it appears in your version of the app. Wait for the indicator to finish, then compare the latest-sync time and the missing metric.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A manual sync is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee that every historical record will appear. If the device has not stored a reading, or if account history was removed during migration, repeating the gesture cannot recreate it.

Restart the phone and Fitbit

Restart the phone first

  1. Close Google Health.
  2. Restart the phone using its normal power menu.
  3. After the phone finishes starting, confirm Bluetooth and internet are on.
  4. Keep the Fitbit nearby, open Google Health and run a manual sync.

Restart the Fitbit

Use the restart procedure for your specific Fitbit model, then place it beside the phone and retry. A restart clears a temporary firmware or Bluetooth state without removing the account. If the device will not respond or cannot remain powered, charge it and follow the model-specific support instructions before attempting a new pairing.

Install pending updates

Update all three layers involved in the connection:

  • Install the phone’s pending operating-system updates.
  • Update Google Health from the phone’s app store.
  • Install any Fitbit firmware update offered through Google Health while the device is charged and near the phone.

Restart after updates if the phone requests it, then perform one manual sync. Updating only the app while leaving an old phone system or device firmware in place can leave the same connection problem unresolved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Eliminate competing pairings

A Fitbit can be associated with another nearby phone or tablet signed in to the same account. That second device may capture the connection, preventing the phone you are testing from syncing consistently.

  1. Check other nearby phones and tablets for the Fitbit app or Google Health and the same account.
  2. On the device that should no longer manage the Fitbit, remove its app/device pairing or sign out as appropriate.
  3. Move that device out of Bluetooth range, then keep the intended phone beside the Fitbit.
  4. Open Google Health on the intended phone and run a manual sync.

Do not leave several devices competing for the same wearable while diagnosing. Once one phone is reliably syncing, you can decide whether a second device is necessary and configure it deliberately.

Disconnect and reconnect the Fitbit only after the earlier checks

Re-pairing can resolve a damaged association, but it should not be the first response because it adds steps and can complicate an otherwise recoverable connection. Before disconnecting, note the account currently shown in Google Health and allow the device to charge.

  2. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and choose the paired Fitbit, then select Forget or Remove.
  3. Restart the phone and the Fitbit.
  4. Return to Google Health, choose the option to add or connect a device, and follow the on-screen pairing flow.
  5. Keep the Fitbit close, approve the requested permissions, and run a manual sync.

Pair the Fitbit through Google Health rather than creating a fresh Bluetooth-only pairing in Settings. The app needs the account connection as well as the radio pairing to upload records.

Reinstall Google Health as a late escalation step

If permissions, background access, updates, restarts and reconnection have not corrected the issue, reinstalling Google Health can clear damaged local app data. Confirm that you know the Google account used for Google Health before removing the app. Records already uploaded to the account should remain online, but data that exists only on the phone or Fitbit has no guarantee of recovery after an app reset.

  1. Uninstall Google Health using the phone’s normal app-management screen.
  2. Restart the phone.
  3. Install Google Health again from the official app store.
  4. Sign in to the same Google account.
  5. Allow the required Nearby Devices or Location permission, background data and battery access.
  6. Reconnect the Fitbit through the app and run a manual sync.

If the app still cannot see the device after a clean install, record the phone model, Android version, Fitbit model, app version and exact error before contacting support.

When Google Health has the data but another app does not

This is a different failure path. If the steps, workout or sleep record is visible in Google Health, the Fitbit-to-Google-Health sync has already succeeded. Re-pairing the wearable is unlikely to repair the separate connection.

  1. Open the affected connected app and its integrations or connected-services settings.
  2. Unlink Google Health (or the Fitbit connection presented by that app).
  3. Close and reopen both apps, then reconnect the service using the same Google account.
  4. Grant the data categories the partner app requests and wait for a fresh sync.
  5. If the partner app remains empty while Google Health is current, contact that app’s developer. Its import schedule, permissions or server-side mapping may be the cause.

Use the date and type of a missing record when reporting the problem. Saying “Google Health shows the workout, but your app does not” helps the developer investigate the downstream import rather than sending you through wearable-pairing steps.

Check Fitbit account migration and older history

Some apparent sync failures are account-history issues rather than a live Bluetooth problem. Google’s privacy FAQ, updated May 19, 2026, says Fitbit-account access ended after May 19, 2026 and that a Fitbit account had to be moved to Google to continue using it. It also says data from accounts that were not moved could be downloaded or deleted before Google began processing data deletions on July 15, 2026.

  • Sleep better: Automatic sleep tracking, a daily detailed Sleep Score, smart wake vibrating alarm, and sleep mode help you improve your sleep quality[3]

If an older Fitbit account was never migrated, verify its status in your Google account and Fitbit/Google Health account notices. Do not assume that a new pairing can restore history that was not migrated or retained. A newly synced device can add current readings to an eligible account, but it cannot recreate data that Google has already deleted or that was never transferred.

iPhone and iPad considerations

The detailed Nearby Devices, background-data and unrestricted-battery instructions above are Android-specific. On an iPhone or iPad, follow the iOS version of Google’s official syncing guide and review Bluetooth permission, Background App Refresh, Low Power Mode and internet access using Apple’s current Settings labels. Keep the Fitbit near the iPhone, open Google Health, and use the app’s manual sync control. If a setting name differs from this article, use the current wording on your iOS version rather than enabling unrelated location services.

What to record before asking for help

Support can diagnose a connection faster when the report identifies the failing link and the exact environment. Gather:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether the missing information is absent from Google Health or only from a connected app.
  • Fitbit model and whether it is a tracker, watch or Aria/Aria 2 scale.
  • Phone model, operating-system version and Google Health app version.
  • The last date and metric that successfully synced.
  • Whether the Fitbit itself still displays the missing reading.
  • Battery level, Bluetooth status and any error message.
  • Which steps you completed: permission changes, background settings, restarts, updates, reconnection or reinstall.

Contact Google Health support when the device cannot sync into Google Health after the full device path. Contact the developer of the other service when Google Health clearly contains the data but that service does not. This division prevents two support teams from sending you through the wrong connection.

Optional charger replacement

If charging is the only unresolved check, replace the cable or charger only after confirming compatibility with the exact Fitbit model. Fitbit charging connectors are not universally interchangeable, and a cable that physically fits another device may not charge or communicate correctly. A working charger is a prerequisite for testing a low-power Fitbit; it is not a fix for missing account history or a broken third-party import.

Practical decision checklist

  • Device stats missing in Google Health: check proximity, charge, Bluetooth, internet, Android permissions and background limits; manually sync; restart; update; remove competing pairings; then reconnect or reinstall.
  • Google Health current, partner app missing data: unlink and reconnect that partner, then contact its developer if the import remains absent.
  • Only old history missing: verify Google account migration and retention status, especially in light of the May 19 and July 15, 2026 policy dates.
  • Aria or Aria 2 scale: troubleshoot its Wi-Fi connection rather than applying phone-Bluetooth steps intended for trackers and watches.
