Extract the ZIP to a short folder first, such as C:Temp. The error usually concerns the complete path Windows is trying to create—not just the visible filename. That path includes the destination folder, every nested folder stored in the archive, separators, the filename, and its extension. If the short destination does not solve it, inspect the archive’s internal folders and names, then consider Windows long-path settings or an extractor whose documentation explicitly confirms long-path support.

What “file name too long” means during ZIP extraction

Windows may display “file name too long”, “path too long”, or Error 0x80010135: Path too long when extraction would create an output path that the extracting application cannot handle. A path is the complete address of the output file: the drive, destination folders, nested folders from the ZIP, separators, the filename, and its extension. Spaces and punctuation count too.

For example, a file named summary.txt is short by itself. If the destination is C:UsersAlexDownloadsclient-projects2026deliverablesarchive-name and the ZIP contains several more nested folders, the resulting address can cross an application’s limit even though no individual name looks unusual.

Microsoft’s path guidance describes 260 characters as the common legacy Windows File Explorer/path limit. It separately describes 255 characters as the maximum length for an individual file or folder name. Those are different constraints:

  • Full-path limit: the character count of the entire output address.
  • Component limit: the length of one file or folder name within that address.

A path can therefore fail because the hierarchy is too deep, because one component is too long, or because both conditions occur together. Renaming the ZIP file itself does not necessarily help: the ZIP’s own name is not the same as the names stored inside it, and the extraction destination contributes to every output path.

Try the low-risk fix first: extract to C:Temp

A short destination removes characters from the beginning of every path without changing the archive’s contents. It is the fastest way to determine whether the problem is mainly the folder in which you started extraction.

  1. Open File Explorer and open the Windows system drive, normally C:.
  2. Create a folder named Temp, making the destination C:Temp. If that folder already exists, you can use it or create another short folder such as C:Zip.
  3. Locate the ZIP file, right-click it, and choose Extract All.
  4. In the extraction destination box, enter C:Temp (or browse to that folder). Do not leave a deeply nested Downloads, project, or synchronized-workspace path selected.
  5. Start extraction and open the resulting folder in C:Temp to confirm that the files are present.

This approach changes only where the output is written. It does not rename files, remove folders, or alter the ZIP. If it works, you can move the extracted tree later to a longer destination only if the final paths remain within the limits of the application that will open and manage them.

If a short destination still fails, inspect the ZIP’s internal paths

When extraction to C:Temp fails, the archive itself may contain a very deep hierarchy or a component approaching the 255-character individual-name limit. Open the ZIP in the extraction program and review the folder tree before extracting everything.

Find the deepest branch

Look for repeated project, date, backup, or package folders. Count the complete path that would be created under C:Temp, not merely the final filename shown in the archive list. A short destination can remove only the destination portion; it cannot remove folders that are embedded in the archive.

Shorten names only when the workflow permits it

If the archive is under your control, preserve the original ZIP and make a working copy. Rename an overlong folder or file to a shorter, meaningful name, then extract the copy. Keep a record of the old-to-new names if scripts, project files, or documentation refer to the original paths. Renaming can make the files usable, but it changes the archive’s internal structure and may break software that expects exact names.

If a single component is longer than Windows’ documented 255-character individual file-or-folder limit, changing the extraction application or enabling long-path behavior does not remove that component constraint. Shortening that name, rebuilding the archive with shorter names, or obtaining a corrected archive is the practical remedy.

Do not assume moving the ZIP is enough

Moving the ZIP from a long Downloads subfolder to the drive root does not change the names stored inside it. It helps only when the extraction command uses the ZIP’s location as the default output folder and you then extract beside it. Explicitly selecting C:Temp is clearer and avoids relying on a default.

Understand Windows long-path support before changing settings

Windows 10 version 1607 and later removed MAX_PATH limitations from many common Win32 file and directory functions. Microsoft’s technical documentation states: “Starting in Windows 10, version 1607, MAX_PATH limitations have been removed from many common Win32 file and directory functions.” The next sentence is the important qualification: “However, your app must opt-in to the new behavior.”

Two conditions are required for the documented long-path behavior:

  • The LongPathsEnabled registry value must be set to 1 (or the corresponding Group Policy setting must be enabled).
  • The application must include a longPathAware entry in its manifest.

Both conditions matter. Enabling a Windows setting cannot make an application that has not opted in suddenly understand longer paths. Microsoft also notes that some processes need to be restarted, and a reboot may be required before all applications recognize the registry value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable the system setting, with the application caveat in mind

Use one of the following administrator-level methods on a supported Windows installation. A setting change is worth trying when you routinely handle long project trees, but it is not a universal fix for the built-in extractor.

Group Policy method

  1. Sign in with an account that can change computer policy.
  2. Open the Local Group Policy Editor, if it is available in your Windows edition.
  3. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Filesystem.
  4. Open Enable Win32 long paths, set it to Enabled, and apply the change.
  5. Restart the affected extraction application. If it still behaves as before, restart Windows.

Registry method

  1. Open Registry Editor as an administrator.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystem.
  3. Find the LongPathsEnabled value and set it to 1. If it is not present, an administrator can create the documented value with that name and type.
  4. Close Registry Editor and restart the extraction application; reboot Windows if the change is not recognized.

Back up the registry or use your organization’s change procedure before editing it. The setting affects system behavior, but it does not rewrite existing archive paths and does not guarantee that every program will accept them.

Why File Explorer may still fail after long paths are enabled

Microsoft’s current support guidance says File Explorer does not use the long-path Group Policy setting. Consequently, turning on Enable Win32 long paths may have no effect when the extraction is started from File Explorer’s built-in ZIP workflow. Third-party applications can impose their own limits as well.

This explains a common sequence: an administrator enables the policy, retries Extract All, and sees the same error. The setting may be correct, but the particular extraction process has not opted in. A short destination or shorter internal names remains the dependable workaround for that process.

Compare the available fixes

Approach Shortens the final path? Changes archive contents? Application opt-in required? Best use and limitation
Extract to C:Temp or another root-level folder Yes, by removing destination characters No No special long-path opt-in First attempt; cannot remove deeply nested names stored in the ZIP
Rename folders or files inside a working copy of the archive Yes, by shortening components Yes No Useful when you control the archive; may break references that depend on original names
Enable Win32 long paths by policy or registry No No Yes, the application must declare longPathAware Helps compatible Win32 programs on supported Windows versions; does not make File Explorer a guaranteed long-path extractor
Use another extraction application Potentially, depending on its implementation No The application must support long paths Check the vendor’s current documentation for your Windows version; no general tool can be assumed to solve every case

Choose the right branch for your situation

The ZIP extracts to C:Temp but not to your normal folder

The destination path is the difference. Keep the short extraction location, or shorten the parent folders in your normal workspace. If another program later opens the files, test that program with the extracted tree; its own path handling may be stricter than the extractor’s.

The ZIP fails even at the drive root

Inspect the archive’s hierarchy and individual names. A deeply nested internal path or a component near the 255-character limit is likely. Rename the working copy’s internal folders or request a rebuilt archive with shorter names. Preserve the original if exact names are needed for records, scripts, or future comparison.

Policy is enabled but File Explorer still reports the error

That result is consistent with Microsoft’s documentation: File Explorer does not use the long-path Group Policy setting. Do not keep toggling the same policy expecting Explorer to change. Use a shorter destination, shorten internal names, or select an application whose own documentation confirms long-path extraction.

Another extractor works for ordinary ZIP files but fails on this one

Check whether the failure is caused by a long path, an individual component, or another archive feature. Microsoft mentions third-party archive tools in the context of encrypted archives, but that mention is not proof that a particular utility supports long-path extraction. Verify the utility’s current Windows-version documentation and its stated limits before relying on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The archive is encrypted

Windows’ built-in ZIP workflow may not cover every archive feature. A different application may be required for encryption, but encryption support and long-path support are separate capabilities. Confirm both before switching tools, and do not infer long-path support merely because a program can open the archive.

How to identify the failing limit

Test one variable at a time. First, extract the unchanged archive to C:Temp. If that succeeds, the original destination was adding too many characters. If it fails, inspect the longest branch in the archive and note whether the problem is depth or one unusually long component.

Remember that every separator counts, as do spaces, punctuation, and the extension. The ZIP’s display may show only a relative path such as reports2026finalsummary.txt; the extractor appends that path to your selected destination. A final file named summary.txt can therefore be the one that triggers the error even though the filename itself is ordinary.

If a single stored name is close to or above 255 characters, treat it as a component-limit problem. If all names are modest but the archive has many levels, treat it as a full-path problem. Both checks are useful because a long-path-aware application may handle a deep path while still rejecting an individual name that exceeds the file-system component limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preserve names when they are part of the workflow

Shortening internal names is not harmless housekeeping. Build scripts, source-code imports, project files, shortcuts, documentation, and comparison tools may contain the original path text. Before renaming anything, make a working copy of the archive and preserve the untouched original in a separate location.

Create a simple old-to-new name list as you work. Rename the highest-level overlong folder first when possible; that can shorten every descendant path at once. Then extract the copy and test the files in the software that will use them. If exact names are required for an audit, delivery, or automated process, do not silently rename them—ask for a rebuilt archive or use a documented long-path-capable workflow instead.

Moving the extracted files later can recreate the error

A successful extraction at C:Temp proves that the chosen extractor could create those paths there; it does not guarantee that the same tree will work in a deeply nested project folder. Move it to the final location in stages, or shorten parent folders before moving the entire tree. If a move fails, return to the short location and verify which destination adds the excess characters.

Also test the application that will open the files. An extractor may create a path that a later editor, build tool, or synchronizer cannot open because that second application has its own path handling. The Windows setting and the extractor’s behavior do not automatically change limits in unrelated programs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Administrative and compatibility cautions

Changing Group Policy or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE requires administrator rights and may be restricted on a managed computer. If the controls are unavailable, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly editing settings or installing software. Group Policy Editor is not present in every Windows edition, so the registry route may be the available documented method, subject to organizational rules.

After changing the value or policy, close and reopen the extractor. Some processes read the setting only when they start; Microsoft also notes that a full restart may be needed before all applications recognize the change. Confirm the Windows version and the extractor’s own documentation. A setting that helps one opted-in Win32 program does not certify support in File Explorer or in every third-party utility.

When to request a rebuilt archive

Ask the sender to rebuild the ZIP when a component exceeds the individual-name limit, when the original names cannot be changed, or when the archive must work for recipients using File Explorer’s built-in extraction. Suggest a concise top-level folder and fewer repeated directory levels. Keep the original archive and any name mapping if the content is evidence, a release artifact, or part of a reproducible build.

A repeatable troubleshooting checklist

  • Record the exact message, including whether it says file name too long, path too long, or 0x80010135.
  • Create or select a short destination such as C:Temp.
  • Run Extract All again and verify the output.
  • If it fails, inspect the ZIP’s deepest folders and longest individual names.
  • Decide whether changing internal names is acceptable for your workflow.
  • If names must remain unchanged, check the extracting application’s documentation for long-path support on your Windows version.
  • If you administer the computer, enable Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Filesystem > Enable Win32 long paths, or set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystemLongPathsEnabled to 1.
  • Restart the application, and reboot Windows if necessary.
  • Retry with the shortest destination before moving the extracted files into a deeper directory.

What the error does—and does not—tell you

The message does not prove that the final filename alone is too long. It can represent the sum of many ordinary folder names. Conversely, a short overall path can still fail if one stored file or folder name exceeds the individual component limit. Treat the complete output address and each component as separate checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also does not prove that Windows itself is incapable of storing the data. Modern Windows versions support longer paths for many Win32 functions when the system setting and application manifest requirements are met. The failing extractor may simply be a legacy or non-opted-in process. Testing the same archive with a short destination is therefore more informative than immediately changing system policy.

Prevent the problem in future archives

  • Keep working folders close to the drive root when creating archives intended for many users.
  • Use concise, consistent project and date names rather than repeating the same descriptive phrase at every folder level.
  • Check the deepest resulting path before distributing a ZIP.
  • Keep individual file and folder names well below the documented 255-character component maximum.
  • When an archive must preserve an exact naming scheme, tell recipients that a short extraction destination may be required.
  • For automated workflows, confirm that the program creating and extracting the archive both document long-path behavior; a Windows setting alone is not enough.

Bottom line

Start with C:Temp. It is reversible, does not alter the ZIP, and directly reduces the full output path. If that fails, the long portion is probably inside the archive or an individual component is too long. Shorten names only in a copy when your workflow allows it. Windows 10 version 1607 and later can support longer paths for opted-in applications when LongPathsEnabled is set to 1 and the application manifest declares longPathAware, but File Explorer does not use the long-path Group Policy setting, so that change is not a universal Explorer fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will renaming the ZIP file fix the error?

Usually not. The extractor is evaluating the destination plus the folders and filenames stored inside the archive. Rename the ZIP only if its location is also being used as a long destination; otherwise select a short output folder such as C:Temp.

Why does extraction work in C:Temp but fail in Downloads?

The Downloads path, project folders, or synchronization folders add characters to every resulting path. The archive may be fine; the longer destination pushes the complete address past the extractor’s limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does enabling Enable Win32 long paths make File Explorer extract long ZIP paths?

No. Microsoft says File Explorer does not use that Group Policy setting. The application must opt in with a longPathAware manifest entry, so Explorer may continue to fail even after the policy or registry value is enabled.

Do I need to enable long paths before trying a different extractor?

Not for the first test. Use a short destination and inspect the archive first. If you switch applications, verify the vendor’s current documentation for long-path extraction on your Windows version; opening ordinary ZIP files does not prove support for unusually long paths.

What if one filename inside the ZIP is more than 255 characters?

That is an individual component problem. A longer destination or a long-path setting does not remove the component constraint. Shorten that name in a working copy, rebuild the archive, or ask the sender for a corrected archive.

Can I move the files after extracting them to C:Temp?

Yes, provided the final destination keeps the complete paths within the limits of the application that will use them. If a move fails, shorten the parent folders or keep the tree at the shorter location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I rename folders inside an archive I did not create?

Only if changing names is acceptable. Preserve the original, work on a copy, and record old and new names. Scripts, project files, and documentation may depend on exact paths, so requesting a rebuilt archive can be safer.

The Bottom Line

Use C:Temp first. If extraction still fails, inspect the archive’s internal depth and individual names, then change names only in a working copy or use an extractor whose documentation confirms long-path support. Windows long-path settings require both system configuration and application opt-in, and they do not turn File Explorer into a guaranteed long-path extractor.
