If File Explorer keeps freezing or closing, work through these checks from least disruptive to more involved recovery. They are practical options drawn from Microsoft’s guidance—not ten guaranteed cures for every crash. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but some steps are version- or symptom-specific.

1. Install available Windows updates

Updates are a sensible first check for File Explorer problems. On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Install available updates and restart if prompted. Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting guidance applies to both versions. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for it. Microsoft’s Windows Update information explains the end of support.

2. Restart the PC

Restart even if Windows Update does not show that one is required. Microsoft notes that this can ensure pending updates are installed. Save open work first, then use Start > Power > Restart.

3. Check the paging-file setting on Windows 10

Microsoft’s File Explorer article includes this check in its Windows 10 instructions; it is not established there as a general Windows 11 fix. Open Advanced system settings > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Virtual memory > Change, then confirm that Windows is set to manage paging-file size automatically. If you change the setting, apply it and restart if Windows requests it.

4. Free disk space with Disk Cleanup

Low available disk space can interfere with normal Windows operation. Search for and open Disk Cleanup, choose the Windows drive, and review the categories before confirming deletion. Check the Recycle Bin before selecting its contents for removal; files emptied from it may no longer be recoverable through the Bin.

5. Run System Maintenance if it is available

Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance points to the System Maintenance troubleshooter in Control Panel. Interface availability can vary by Windows version. Search Control Panel for Troubleshooting, open the maintenance option if present, and run it as administrator. If that option is absent, skip this check rather than looking for a different tool with a similar name.

6. Repair protected Windows system files

If Windows components may be corrupted, Microsoft documents running DISM before System File Checker (SFC). Open Command Prompt as administrator, run the first command, wait for it to finish, and then run the second:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow

DISM obtains files used for repair; SFC checks protected system files and replaces corrupted files with cached copies when possible. Let SFC reach 100% verification before closing the window. If it cannot perform the requested operation, Microsoft advises running the SFC scan in Safe Mode. See Microsoft’s system-file repair instructions.

7. Try Startup Repair for a Windows startup problem

Startup Repair, also described as Automatic Repair in Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting guidance, is a recovery option for problems that prevent Windows from starting properly. It is more involved than the checks above and is not a general remedy for every Explorer crash. To reach it, open Windows Recovery Environment through Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup on Windows 10, then follow the recovery prompts to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Labels and routes can vary; follow the prompts shown on your PC.

8. Remove a recent update only if the timing fits

If File Explorer began failing after a recent Windows update, uninstalling that update might help. This is a conditional recovery step, not a recommendation to remove updates routinely. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates on Windows 10, and select the relevant update if Windows offers the option. Microsoft’s recovery options guidance says removing an update may help when a problem started after it.

9. Consider broader Windows recovery only after simpler steps

If the problem persists, review Microsoft’s recovery options and choose the least disruptive one that fits the situation. Options differ in what they keep or remove, and some can cause data loss. Back up important files before proceeding, read the effect of the specific option you select, and follow the current Windows recovery prompts. Do not begin a reinstall without understanding whether your chosen route preserves personal files, apps, and settings.

10. Relaunch Explorer during a blank screen with a cursor

This step is for a specific symptom: a blank screen with a cursor, where the desktop shell may not be running. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If Windows Explorer appears in the process list, select it and choose Restart. If it is not listed, choose File > Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and select OK. This is Microsoft’s guidance for that blank-screen scenario, not a general fix for recurring crashes. See Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting page.
