Start by identifying which Figma product is running the task. The Figma agent inside a Figma Design file edits layers and designs; Figma Make turns prompts into functional prototypes or web apps. Copy the exact error, retry once, then reload the browser tab or restart the desktop app. If the run still fails, reduce the selected layers, prompt length, attachments, or project files before trying again. Stop a task that is still running, use Undo for an unwanted Design change, and duplicate a Make file before risky retries.
First, identify the product and preserve the evidence
Failure messages look similar, but the fix depends on where the run occurred. In a Figma Design file, the agent operates on selected layers and can create or edit visual designs. Figma Make is a prompt-to-app workspace for functional prototypes and web applications, with its own preview, project files, attachments, and setup process.
Before changing anything, copy the complete error text and note the time, file, selected content, prompt, and whether you were using the browser or desktop app. A screenshot or short screen recording is useful if the failure changes the canvas or preview. Do not rely on a paraphrase such as “AI failed”; messages about network access, rate limits, missing fonts, blocked prompts, file size, and connectors require different remedies.

Run the fast triage sequence
- Classify the run. Confirm whether the conversation is in a Design file or in Make, and save the exact message, timestamp, and affected file.
- Retry once. A transient model or service response may succeed on a second attempt. Repeated retries without changing the input can consume time while reproducing the same failure.
- Refresh the session. Reload the browser tab or restart the Figma desktop app. This clears a stale client connection without changing the file itself.
- Check the named condition. For offline, connection, or network errors, restore a stable connection. For a rate-limit message, wait for the short cooldown or the reset time shown in the interface. If an administrator has disabled AI for your organization, an administrator must enable it. Revise wording when the prompt is blocked by policy, and install or activate the font named in a missing-font error.
- Shrink the request. Select fewer layers, attach smaller frames, shorten the prompt, and remove unnecessary inputs. Make accepts no more than three attachments in one message. For high-fidelity work, provide one screen or a small group of related elements at a time.
- Protect the current state. Stop an active task, undo an unwanted Design edit, or duplicate a Make file before another experiment. These actions create a reversible checkpoint instead of stacking uncertain changes.
Fix a failed run or “Something went wrong” error
Retry, reload, and restart in that order
Figma documents retrying, reloading, or restarting as the first response when a request cannot complete. Retry the same request once. If it fails again, reload the tab; desktop users should quit and reopen the Figma app. Reopen the file and check whether the previous attempt actually changed anything before sending a new prompt.

Handle Make’s unknown failures
Figma Make attributes some unknown failures to the generative nature of AI models. Wait briefly, retry, and, if the problem persists, duplicate the file and run the smaller request in the copy. Duplicating separates recovery work from the original project and gives you a clean comparison point. A persistent, reproducible failure should be reported with the error text, timestamp, file state, prompt, and the action already attempted.
Separate service errors from input errors
A connection or offline message points to the session or network. A rate-limit message requires a cooldown rather than a new prompt. “Organization disabled” requires an administrator. A blocked-prompt notice requires different wording that still states the legitimate design goal. A missing-font error is solved by making that font available or replacing it, not by repeatedly submitting the same request. Treat the wording of the message as a diagnostic category.
Stop runs that hang or time out
Stop a running Design agent task
When a Figma Design agent task is still running, click Stop in the chat box. This ends the current task so you can inspect the canvas and decide whether to retry with a smaller selection. Stopping is preferable to closing the file while an edit may still be in progress.
Avoid the Make setup race
In a local-codebase Make file, do not send the first prompt the instant setup reports completion. Wait 30 to 60 seconds after setup is completed and the preview appears. Background build tasks may still be running; prompting during that window can create temporary or unwanted files and make a valid request appear to hang.

When Make keeps timing out
After the setup wait, retry with a short request that targets one screen or component. If that also times out, duplicate the file and test the reduced request there. Record the reproduction details for support: the file type, setup status, preview state, prompt, attachment count, exact timeout text, browser or desktop app, and elapsed time. Repeatedly resubmitting a large prompt does not address a background build or service fault.
Reverse unwanted edits and recover from off-track output
Undo the latest Design change
Click Undo in the Figma agent chat to reverse the most recent change. Figma’s agent guidance states that you can always undo changes the agent makes. If you need to compare the generated result with the prior state, duplicate the AI-updated version before undoing; the duplicate preserves the output for inspection while the working file returns to its earlier state.
Duplicate before a risky Make retry
Make has no equivalent instruction to keep experimenting in the same file after a persistent unknown error. Duplicate the file first, then retry in the copy. This protects the original project from generated files or configuration changes that are difficult to identify later.

Clear context when instructions drift
Long conversations can cause output quality to degrade as old requirements, attachments, guidelines, and MCP context compete with the latest request. In Make, clear the chat context when the agent repeatedly ignores your constraints. Clearing removes the AI’s prior conversation, attachments, guidelines, and MCP context while preserving the visible transcript. After clearing, restate the goal, constraints, acceptance criteria, and scope in a short prompt, then proceed screen by screen.

Prevent a repeat
- State what must remain unchanged, such as existing navigation, component names, or data contracts.
- Name the exact screen, frame, or component to edit.
- Give one measurable outcome per prompt instead of combining a redesign, content rewrite, and code refactor.
- Ask for a preview or a single screen before expanding the change.
- Keep a duplicate or version checkpoint before a broad edit.
Reduce selections, prompts, attachments, and project files
“Try again, with a smaller selection”
In a Design file, select fewer layers and retry. Large selections increase the amount of structure the agent must interpret and the number of objects it may modify. Start with one frame, component, or coherent group; add adjacent sections only after the first result is correct.
Content-length and attachment errors
Shorten the prompt to the essential objective, constraints, and deliverable. Remove repeated background and attach only the frames needed to answer the request. Make supports up to three attachments per message. If a frame or image is too large to upload, split the design into smaller sections and send them separately.
Oversized Make project files
A Make project containing files over 1 MB can prevent AI chat from working. Inspect the project, shorten or delete oversized files, and retry after the total is within the supported limit. Keep the original file duplicated before deleting content so you can restore anything removed during cleanup.

Fix prompts that are ignored or produce the wrong result
Make the instruction testable
Write the target, location, constraints, and completion test in that order. For example: “In the checkout frame, change the primary button to the existing blue component, keep spacing and typography unchanged, and return only the updated frame.” This is more reliable than a broad request such as “make the checkout better.”

Use staged requests
- Ask the agent to inspect or describe the selected screen without editing.
- Request one change with explicit elements that must not move.
- Review the result in the canvas or preview.
- Only then request the next screen or component.
Screen-by-screen inputs are recommended for fidelity and reliability in Make. Staging also makes it clear which prompt introduced a defect, so Undo or duplication remains useful.
Address blocked instructions and missing assets directly
If the interface says a prompt is blocked, rewrite the request while preserving the legitimate product requirement; do not disguise a prohibited action. If the agent reports a missing font, resolve the font availability first and then rerun the design request. A model cannot faithfully reproduce typography that the file cannot access.

Enable a tool set
A connector that appears connected but never responds needs at least one enabled tool set set to Ask to run or Always run. A connection alone does not authorize a tool invocation.
Check authentication and scopes
Open the connector’s Advanced settings and verify the required API key, personal access token, or OAuth scopes. An expired key or insufficient scope can look like a silent connector failure even when the connector is listed.

Invoke the intended connector explicitly
If the agent does not select the connector automatically, write @[Connector name] in the prompt, replacing the text with the connector’s actual name. State the operation and the expected return so the agent has a clear tool target.
Use supported hosting
Figma’s connector guidance says that the Figma agent and Figma Make do not support local localhost or stdio MCP servers. Deploy the server at a publicly accessible HTTPS URL, then update the connector configuration and authentication. A local process cannot be made reliable by repeatedly retrying from the Figma interface.

Escalate a persistent problem with useful details
Contact support after the retry, session refresh, input reduction, and product-specific recovery steps fail, or when the same short request reproduces the issue in a duplicated file. Include:

- The exact error text, date and time, and whether the run was in Figma Design or Figma Make.
- The browser or desktop app, connection condition, and whether the preview or canvas loaded.
- The prompt, selected layers or screen, attachment count and approximate sizes, and any project file over the 1 MB threshold.
- For Make, whether setup had completed and whether you waited 30–60 seconds after the preview appeared.
- For connectors, the tool-set permission, authentication method, scopes, explicit invocation, and whether the server is public HTTPS rather than local.
- A screenshot or short video showing the failure and the action already attempted.
This record lets support distinguish a model error from a client, input-limit, organization-policy, or connector configuration problem without asking you to reproduce the entire project blindly.
