If your foldable phone suddenly loses charge, start with Settings > Battery > Battery usage (or the closest equivalent). Find the app or system component using the most power, then update the phone and apps, restart, restrict only the offending app’s background activity, reduce screen-on time, and enable the built-in battery saver. Keep the phone cool. If it loses more than 10% overnight while idle, stays unusually hot, shows a battery-health warning, or continues draining after these checks, use the manufacturer’s diagnostics and support or an authorized repair center. The exact menus and the 10% overnight threshold described below are not universal across foldables.
First, decide whether the drain is temporary or abnormal
Battery use can rise briefly after a phone is set up, restored from a backup, or updated. Samsung says new Galaxy phones, including Z Fold and Z Flip models, may use more power while data and apps finish setting up; 5G conditions and background activity can add to the load. Google says Pixel battery optimization can take up to a few weeks after setup or a reset, and that a little extra drain after a software update is normal while downloads and optimization finish.
These explanations are plausible temporary causes, not a reason to ignore a continuing problem. Note when the change began and what happened immediately beforehand:

If the phone is still losing charge unusually quickly after several days of ordinary use, move from observation to diagnosis rather than waiting indefinitely for optimization. A simple note of the battery percentage, location, network type, temperature, and activity can reveal a pattern that a single percentage reading hides.

Check which app or system component is using the battery
Battery percentages are useful only when you know what produced them. Open the phone’s battery-use screen and inspect both foreground and background activity. Menu names differ by model, carrier, Android version, and region.
On a Pixel Fold
Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Pixel provides views for apps and, on supported software, system components. Look for an app with a large share of use, a service running in the background, or a pattern that coincides with weak network coverage. The available controls can change with the Android version, so use the labels shown on your phone rather than following a menu from a different model.
On a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip
Open Settings > Device care and review the battery-related usage controls available on your device. Samsung’s Device Care can identify high use and offers Optimize now. It also provides background-usage limits for apps that you rarely use. Samsung’s support guidance names the Z Fold and Z Flip families, but exact labels and locations can vary by One UI release and carrier.
How to interpret the list
- One third-party app dominates: Check its background setting, update it, or uninstall it if you do not need it.
- Several apps are high: Look for a shared cause such as poor signal, hotspot use, navigation, streaming, or a long period with the screen on.
- A system or network item is high: Do not disable essential services at random. Apply updates, restart, and use the device-specific diagnostics before changing system settings.
- Nothing looks high but the percentage falls while idle: Perform an idle test and check for heat, signal problems, or a battery-health warning.
Take a screenshot of the usage page before changing settings. If the symptom returns, a comparison between two days can show whether the same app or component is repeatedly responsible.
Apply the reversible fixes first
1. Update the phone and every heavily used app
Install available Android or One UI updates, then update apps from the phone’s app store. Battery regressions and runaway background processes are often corrected in software releases. After updating, restart the phone so pending services and processes start cleanly.
2. Restart instead of repeatedly force-stopping everything
A normal restart can clear a stuck process without breaking notifications or essential services. Force-stopping system apps or disabling services indiscriminately can create new problems and does not identify the original cause. Make one change at a time and give the phone enough ordinary use to see whether the battery pattern actually changes.
3. Correct one abnormal app
For an app that shows unusually high background use, open its app-battery or background-usage setting and choose the restrictive option offered by the phone. Google recommends leaving apps on Optimized generally and changing the setting only for an app that merits it. Restricting messaging, alarm, accessibility, security, or other essential apps can delay notifications or impair a feature. If an unnecessary app remains a top user after an update and restart, uninstall it and observe the phone for a day.

Do not impose the most restrictive setting on every app just to make the percentage look better. Broad restrictions can hide the symptom by preventing normal synchronization, while creating missed messages or stale content. Target the app that the usage screen identifies.
4. Use Samsung Device Care where available
On a Galaxy foldable, run Device Care > Optimize now, then review background-usage limits for infrequently used apps. Optimization is a check, not a guarantee: it cannot repair a failing battery, poor reception, heat exposure, or a defective app. Samsung’s menu labels can differ across carriers and One UI releases, so use the controls actually shown on your device.
5. Reduce display and high-load activity
Lower brightness, shorten the screen timeout, and use the cover display when it meets the task. Foldables can spend long periods driving a large inner display; that is a power contributor, but the official guidance does not establish that a particular inner or cover display mode is defective. While diagnosing a low charge, avoid or shorten hotspot sessions, GPS navigation, video streaming, gaming, and extended camera recording. These activities can consume power quickly even on a healthy phone.
Compare like with like: a day spent recording video or navigating cannot be fairly compared with a light-use day. If the battery falls rapidly during a demanding task but behaves normally afterward, workload is a more likely contributor than an idle battery fault.

Use Battery Saver, Power saving, or Adaptive Battery when you need to extend runtime. These modes can limit background work, synchronization, performance, or display behavior. Read the on-screen description so you know which notifications or performance features may be delayed. They are useful for preserving a charge while you investigate, but they do not fix the underlying cause.
Check network conditions before blaming the foldable hardware
A phone working hard to maintain a weak cellular connection can drain faster than one on a strong signal. Samsung specifically lists network conditions and 5G as possible contributors on new Galaxy phones. Google’s troubleshooting guidance also points readers toward network-related patterns in battery usage.
Compare battery behavior in a location with reliable Wi‑Fi or strong cellular service. Temporarily avoid hotspot use and, where your model allows it, test a lower network mode for a short period. A reduction in drain suggests a connectivity contribution; it does not prove that the modem or foldable mechanism is defective. Availability of network-mode controls depends on the model, carrier, and region.

Record whether the drain follows a particular building, route, SIM, or network mode. If it occurs only in weak coverage, restore your normal setting after the comparison rather than treating a temporary lower mode as a permanent repair.
Keep the phone cool
Android Help states that a hot battery drains much faster even when the phone is not in use and that heat can damage the battery. Remove the phone from direct sun or a hot car, stop demanding tasks while it cools, and do not charge it under bedding or in an insulated case. If the phone is hot while idle, treat that as a warning rather than simply enabling a more aggressive power-saving mode.
Unusual heat combined with rapid drain, a swollen enclosure, physical damage, or a smell warrants manufacturer support or an authorized repair center. Do not press on a bulging battery or attempt to open a foldable at home; its compact, hinged construction and multiple battery sections make informal replacement especially risky.

Both branches can show higher use after setup or an update, and both can be affected by signal, heat, background activity, and screen-intensive work. No official guidance establishes that one foldable display or hinge behavior universally causes fast drain.
Run Google’s Pixel overnight idle test
Google’s Pixel 6-and-later troubleshooting instructions provide a repeatable check for Pixel Fold owners. Perform it only after normal use has settled and the phone is not hot.

- Close apps you have finished using.
- Unplug the phone and leave it idle overnight. Avoid streaming, navigation, hotspot use, or other deliberate activity during the test.
- In the morning, check the percentage lost and inspect Settings > Battery > Battery usage for the app and system details.
- If the loss is more than 10%, investigate the listed app or system component and repeat the check as Google’s guidance recommends. This is a Pixel support threshold, not a population statistic and not a rule for every foldable.
- If a listed system component exceeds 10%, contact Pixel Support. Pixel battery diagnostics are available on Pixel 6 and later; a question-mark battery icon is a reason to request support or use an authorized repair center.
Google’s instructions distinguish system or Google-app behavior from a third-party app. If repeated tests point to one third-party app, contact that app’s developer after applying its updates. If the pattern points to the system or a Google app, use Pixel Support rather than repeatedly changing unrelated app settings.

Have the exact model, software version, approximate start date, battery-use screenshots, and the result of any idle test ready for support. Menu names and repair availability vary by region, so follow the instructions for your model and market. If support asks you to repeat an overnight test, follow its instructions rather than substituting a different test from another brand.
Consider a factory reset only after backup
A factory reset can remove a corrupted setting or software state, but it erases locally stored apps and their data. It is a later troubleshooting step, not the first response to a battery percentage that changed after setup or an update.
- Back up photos, messages, authenticator data, files, and any app-specific content that is not already synchronized.
- Confirm that you know the account credentials and recovery methods needed to set the phone up again.
- Before resetting, repeat the battery-use review and remove or restrict any clearly implicated app.
- Reset only through the phone’s official system settings or the manufacturer’s documented support procedure.
- After setup, install updates, test the phone before restoring every app, and add apps in stages if you are trying to identify a software trigger.
If the phone is physically damaged, unusually hot, swollen, or showing a battery diagnostic warning, a reset is not a substitute for inspection.
What a charger or power bank can—and cannot—do
A charger or power bank can provide temporary runtime while you travel or wait for support. It cannot diagnose or correct an app that is running in the background, poor network conditions, heat, a software fault, or a worn or damaged battery. Do not treat extra charging capacity as evidence that the foldable itself is fixed. Use compatible charging equipment and stop charging if the phone becomes abnormally hot or shows physical damage.

- One app is clearly high? Keep it optimized or restrict its background use, update or uninstall it, then observe.

Should I turn off 5G to save battery?
