Start with the symptom, not a random fix. Fallout: New Vegas failures fall into different groups: a crash during play, a launcher that returns to Play, a Steam button that appears to do nothing, or a freeze while loading one particular save. The safest sequence is to change one variable at a time, record whether the game is vanilla or modded, and note your storefront, Windows setup, graphics hardware, and the exact point of failure.
Bethesda’s PC support procedures cover system requirements, drivers, file verification, permissions, antivirus exclusions, configuration files, GPU selection, controllers, compatibility settings, and save recovery. None is a universal fix, so stop when the failure changes and keep the last known-good setting.
Before changing anything: record the failure
Write down what you see and when it happens. “Crashes” can mean a desktop exit after the main menu, an immediate return to the launcher, a Steam button that briefly changes and then does nothing, or a single save that never finishes loading. Those symptoms point to different branches below.
- Storefront: Steam or Epic Games Store.
- Windows details: edition/build, whether Steam itself is running with compatibility settings, and whether the account has administrator rights.
- Hardware: CPU, graphics adapter, whether the computer has integrated and dedicated GPUs, and the installed graphics-driver version.
- Game state: unmodified (“vanilla”) or using mods, launchers, overlays, or custom INI files.
- Timing: before the launcher, after pressing Play, at the main menu, during a new game, or while loading a particular save.
Back up saves and configuration files before deleting INIs, removing modifications, or allowing a launcher to rewrite files. Make one change, test the same action, and note the result; changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to identify.

General crash during play or startup
Use this order when the game crashes generally, rather than only on one save or only when Steam’s button appears inactive.
1. Confirm the PC meets the game’s requirements
Check the current Fallout: New Vegas listing for your storefront against your computer’s processor, memory, graphics hardware, operating-system, and storage requirements. A modern computer can still fail because of a driver, GPU-selection, permission, or configuration problem, but requirements are the first exclusion. If the storefront lists separate 32-bit or operating-system conditions, use the conditions shown for your edition rather than relying on a different platform’s listing.
2. Update or conditionally roll back the graphics driver
Install the current driver supplied for your graphics adapter, then restart Windows before testing. Bethesda specifically notes that some AMD RX Series users may be unable to launch with Adrenalin Edition 24.4.1. Roll back to a prior driver only if you have that affected hardware and driver combination; do not remove or replace a driver merely because another user reported it. Check the GPU vendor’s current driver information before selecting a version, because driver advice can change.
3. Verify the installation through the storefront
Use the launcher’s built-in file-verification or repair command for the edition you own. Let the process finish, then launch normally. Do not copy an installation path from a different storefront: Steam and Epic install games in different locations, and custom libraries can move either one. Verification replaces missing or damaged game files, but it does not necessarily remove custom settings, saves, or every mod file.
4. Check permissions and antivirus interference
Confirm that your Windows account can read and write the game directory and the Fallout: New Vegas documents folder. If security software quarantines the executable or blocks it from writing configuration files, review its detection history. Add narrowly scoped exclusions only when you understand the risk and only for the game’s executable and required folders; do not disable protection system-wide as a first step. Restore protection after testing and remove an exclusion that does not help.

5. Rebuild the local INI configuration
Fallout: New Vegas stores configuration files in the FalloutNV documents folder under your Windows user profile. Back up that folder, then delete the game’s INI files so the launcher can generate fresh defaults. This resets graphics and input settings, so record custom values first. Test before restoring any edited INI or mod-specific configuration. If a newly generated configuration works, reapply changes individually to find the setting that causes the crash.
6. Check Steam’s own compatibility setting
Steam should not itself be forced into Windows compatibility mode for this troubleshooting path. Locate Steam’s executable, open its Properties and Compatibility settings, and clear an unnecessary compatibility selection or administrator override that was applied to Steam rather than the game. Restart Steam and test again. This check is separate from testing compatibility for FalloutNV.exe in the launch-specific section.

7. Run Windows compatibility troubleshooting for the launcher
Windows can test suggested compatibility settings for the game launcher. Use the launcher’s Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and run the compatibility troubleshooter rather than permanently applying several modes at once. Record the setting Windows proposes, test it, and revert it if there is no improvement. Compatibility troubleshooting is a diagnostic suggestion, not evidence that one legacy mode fixes every current Windows installation.
When Fallout: New Vegas will not launch
This branch is for a launcher that opens and then closes, or an executable that never reaches the main menu. It is distinct from pressing Steam’s button and seeing no apparent response.
Delete Fallout.ini, then verify files
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Back up the FalloutNV documents folder.
- Delete
Fallout.inifrom that folder. Leave your backup intact. - Open the storefront that owns the game and run its file-verification command.
- Launch once with default settings before restoring edits or mods.
Use the installation location shown by your own launcher. Bethesda lists separate paths for Steam and Epic, but a custom library means a copied path may be wrong. If verification reports changes, allow it to complete and test the untouched installation.

Test the game executable’s compatibility settings
Find FalloutNV.exe in the installed game directory. In Properties > Compatibility, test Windows 7 compatibility mode. If that does not work, test running the executable as administrator. Apply one setting at a time and undo it if the result is unchanged. These are troubleshooting options for a legacy game, not a claim that Windows 7 mode is required or universally effective on current Windows releases.
Separate a clean launch from a modded launch
Disable third-party modifications and custom launch tools for the first clean test. A game that launches without modifications points toward a plugin, load order, script extender, edited INI, or replacement asset rather than the base installation. Re-enable components one at a time after establishing that the unmodified game starts. Keep saves made with modifications separate from a clean test; loading a mod-dependent save without its required content can create a different failure.
Steam Play button does nothing
If Steam changes to “Running” briefly and returns to Play, or appears not to launch anything, use Bethesda’s Steam-specific checks before repeating general repairs.
Disconnect a controller as a reversible test
Unplug any connected game controller, close and reopen Steam, and press Play. Bethesda identifies a connected controller as a diagnostic variable for this symptom. If the game starts, reconnect the controller after reaching the menu and test it; a failure that returns with the controller connected narrows the problem to device handling or an input layer. This is a temporary test, not a recommendation to discard the controller.
Assign FalloutNV.exe to the primary GPU
On a computer with integrated and dedicated graphics, make sure Windows and the GPU control panel assign FalloutNV.exe to the primary or high-performance adapter. Review Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics and the graphics vendor’s per-application profile, if available. Power-saving settings can select integrated graphics even when a dedicated adapter is installed. Apply the selection, restart Steam, and test the same launch action.

Check DirectX availability
Confirm that the DirectX components expected by the game are installed and that Windows has not blocked or quarantined a required runtime. Use the DirectX diagnostic tool to inspect the display and system tabs, but do not delete runtime files based on an isolated error. If the diagnostic reports a problem, repair it through Microsoft’s supported installer or Windows maintenance path, then reboot.
Try a clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with nonessential services and startup programs disabled. It can reveal an overlay, security product, hardware utility, or capture tool that prevents Steam from starting the game. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure, restart, test Fallout: New Vegas, and then restore normal startup services after the test. Re-enable items in groups so the conflicting program can be isolated without leaving Windows in a reduced-startup state.
Review Game DVR and overlays
Check Windows Game DVR or Game Bar settings and temporarily disable capture features or overlays for the test. Also consider other overlays supplied by Steam, GPU utilities, chat clients, or monitoring tools. Change one overlay at a time; an overlay that is harmless in other games can still interfere with an older executable.
Investigate an AMD amdvlk64.dll APPCRASH condition
Use dxdiag and Windows Error Reporting details to see whether the crash names amdvlk64.dll in an FalloutNV.exe APPCRASH. That combination is a conditional clue for a possible AMD Vulkan-related conflict. It is not a reason to download, delete, or replace DLL files manually. Preserve the error report, check the installed graphics-driver package, and use the vendor’s supported driver installation or rollback procedure only when the evidence matches your system.

If the main menu and older saves work but the latest save freezes or crashes, treat the save as potentially corrupted rather than immediately reinstalling the game.

- Exit without repeatedly overwriting the affected save.
- Back up the entire save folder and keep several separate copies.
- Load an earlier save made before the problem appeared.
- Play or travel briefly, then make a new save in a different slot and test that file.
- If earlier saves load and the newest one does not, retire the damaged save and continue from the newest working copy.
Frequent rotating saves are safer than relying on one autosave or one quicksave. If every save fails, test a new game without modifications. Bethesda describes starting a new game as a possible recovery when the problem persists, but it is a last resort for this save-specific branch, not an early fix for a general launch crash.
Crashes when exiting or instability after installing mods
For a crash that occurs while quitting, or instability that began after adding a modification, first return to a controlled, unmodified test.
Disable or uninstall third-party modifications
Disable modifications through the tool that installed them, or uninstall them according to that tool’s procedure. Do not delete random files from the game directory while trying to identify a conflict; keep a backup and record what was changed. Test an exit from a clean session. If the crash disappears, restore modifications individually and test both loading and quitting after each addition.

Verify files without misreading the result
Run the official verification flow for your storefront after disabling modifications. Bethesda notes that one or more files can fail verification normally when local configuration files are expected to remain unchanged. A nonzero failed-file count therefore is not automatic proof that the installation is broken. Allow the platform to complete its repair, then check whether the game’s executable and base assets are restored while retaining backed-up saves and configuration data.
Keep mod-dependent saves identifiable
Label or segregate saves made with a particular mod set. A clean installation may not be able to load a save that expects removed plugins, scripts, or assets. If you need to diagnose the base game, use a new test game or an earlier save known to work with the same content instead of risking your primary progression.

What not to do
- Do not apply a driver rollback unless the AMD RX Series and Adrenalin 24.4.1 condition matches your system.
- Do not delete DLLs, download replacement DLLs, or change system files because an error report names a library.
- Do not assume every failed verification file is a damaged game file; local configuration files may be intentionally left alone.
- Do not overwrite the only working save while testing a potentially corrupted latest save.
- Do not combine a compatibility mode, administrator setting, driver change, INI edit, and mod removal in one test if you need to know which action mattered.
- Do not leave Windows in clean-boot mode after troubleshooting; restore normal startup services.
When the official steps do not resolve it
Stop broad changes and collect a precise report for Bethesda Support or your storefront’s support channel. Include the storefront, Windows version, graphics adapter and driver version, whether the installation is vanilla or modded, the exact failure point, what changed immediately before it began, and any DxDiag or Windows Error Reporting entry. Mention whether all saves fail or only the newest one, and preserve the relevant save and configuration backups. This information lets support distinguish an installation problem from a GPU-selection issue, a driver conflict, a mod interaction, or a damaged save.
The Bottom Line
Match the fix to the symptom: repair the installation and configuration for broad crashes, test compatibility for a launch failure, disconnect the controller and check GPU selection when Steam’s button does nothing, and recover from an earlier save when only the newest file freezes. Keep backups, change one variable at a time, and treat driver or DLL changes as conditional diagnostics rather than universal cures.
