Most Fairbuds problems can be separated into four causes: an incomplete pairing record, a charging-path problem, phone-side Bluetooth interference, or a fault in one earbud or the case. Start with the least destructive fix: charge both buds, pair them from the open case, and only then use the 10-second Bluetooth reset. For connection drops, test another device before resetting the phone’s network settings. If the Fairbuds app cannot see the earbuds, establish the Bluetooth connection first and grant the app the location access it needs to scan for Bluetooth Low Energy devices.

Identify the failure before changing settings

The symptom usually points to the right remedy. Use the table to choose where to start, then follow the matching procedure below.

What you observe Most useful first check Likely remedy if the check fails
Fairbuds do not appear in Bluetooth Put both buds in the open case and enter pairing mode Forget the old Fairbuds entry, then perform a Bluetooth reset
Pairing succeeds but audio cuts out Test within range and with another phone or computer Reconnect, restart the phone, or reset Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings
The case or one bud shows no charging progress Check seating, USB-C cable, adapter and LED Replace the cable or adapter; investigate a replaceable battery or charging core
Bluetooth shows Fairbuds, but the app does not Open the app only after Bluetooth says Connected Enable Location or Location Services and grant the app permission
A replacement or newly added bud will not work with the other Charge both buds and perform the replacement-earbud synchronization Reset and pair again; seek a spare part or support if synchronization fails

Pair Fairbuds with a phone or computer

Enter normal pairing mode

  1. Place both earbuds in the charging case and leave the lid open.
  2. Press and hold the function button on the bottom of the case for three seconds.
  3. Release it when the case LED begins flashing blue.
  4. Open the device’s Bluetooth settings and select Fairbuds. On Android, accept the Google Fast Pair prompt if it appears.

Both earbuds need to be in the case for this procedure. If the Fairbuds name is missing, wait for the blue flash before scanning again rather than repeatedly tapping the device entry.

Clear a stale pairing record and pair again

A phone can retain a damaged or outdated Bluetooth record even when the earbuds are working. Remove that record before resetting the earbuds:

Anker USB C to USB C Cable, 60W Fast Charging Cable (2-Pack, 6 ft, Black) | For iPhone 18 / 17 Series, iPad mini 6, and More
  • Durable Design: Reinforced nylon exterior and a robust core ensure this cable withstands up to 5,000 bends, outlasting other brands
  • Fast Charging: Supports Power Delivery for up to 60W high-speed charging when paired with a USB-C charger
  • Versatile Compatibility: Works with virtually all USB-C devices, including phones, tablets, and laptops
  • High-Speed Data Transfer: Transfer files quickly with 480Mbps data transfer speeds
  • Included Accessories: Comes with a hook-and-loop cable tie for easy organization and a welcome guide for hassle-free setup
  1. In the phone or computer’s Bluetooth settings, select Fairbuds and choose Forget, Unpair or the equivalent command.
  2. Put both buds in the open case.
  3. Hold the case function button for 10 seconds.
  4. Wait for the LED to flash red three times. Fairphone identifies those three red flashes as confirmation that the Bluetooth reset is complete.
  5. Run the normal three-second, blue-flashing pairing procedure and select Fairbuds again.

This reset removes the earbuds’ saved Bluetooth pairing information; it is different from resetting Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings on the phone.

Fix Fairbuds that will not charge

Use the specified USB-C power path

Fairbuds charge through USB-C. Fairphone specifies a certified power adapter rated at 5 V and at least 0.5 A (Fairphone, 2026). A cable or adapter that is damaged, intermittent or unable to provide that minimum can make the case appear dead or leave the buds at the same percentage.

  1. Connect the case with a known-good USB-C cable.
  2. Use a certified adapter supplying 5 V and at least 0.5 A.
  3. Leave the case connected long enough to observe the LED rather than judging by a brief flash.
  4. Remove and reseat each earbud so its charging contacts align with the case contacts.
  5. Try the same buds with the known-good cable and adapter again before changing Bluetooth settings.

Fairphone specifies approximately two hours for a full earbud charge. A 10-minute charge can provide up to 90 minutes of playback; both figures are Fairphone specifications from 2026, not a guarantee for every volume level, codec or battery condition.

Read the case LED

LED color Meaning What to do
Green The case is fully charged If a bud still will not charge, concentrate on seating, contacts or that bud’s battery rather than the adapter.
Yellow The case is at a medium level Continue charging and check whether the color changes after the case has had time on the adapter.
Red The case is low Keep it on the specified USB-C power source before diagnosing pairing or playback.

The LED indicates the case’s state; it does not by itself prove that both earbuds are making contact. A bud that sits slightly out of position can remain uncharged while the case reports a normal level.

When one Fairbud is not charging

  • Take both earbuds out, check that nothing prevents either one from sitting fully in its slot, and reseat them.
  • Charge the case with the known-good USB-C cable and certified 5 V, at least 0.5 A adapter.
  • Observe whether the problem follows the same earbud or remains with the same case position. A fault that follows one bud points toward that bud; a fault that remains in one slot points toward the case contact or charging circuitry.
  • If the battery is known to be working but charging still fails, Fairphone lists the charging core as a replaceable possibility.

Do not treat a Bluetooth reset as a charging repair: clearing pairing data cannot restore power to a bud that is not making electrical contact.

Stop Fairbuds from disconnecting

Check range, power and the phone

Fairphone reports a controlled, unobstructed Bluetooth range of 10 meters in its 2025/2026 FAQ. Walls, furniture, a body between the phone and earbuds, and other radio interference can reduce the usable distance. Keep the phone nearby while testing, and make sure the accessory is switched on and charged.

  1. Move the phone close to the case and earbuds.
  2. Confirm that Fairbuds have charge and are not still seated in the case.
  3. Turn Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it on again.
  4. Remove Fairbuds from the phone’s saved Bluetooth devices and reconnect them.
  5. Test the earbuds with another phone or computer. If they stay connected there, the original phone or its Bluetooth environment is the more likely source.
  6. Restart the Fairphone before using the system-level reset.

Reset Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on a Fairphone

Use this only after the accessory-side reset and ordinary phone checks. On a Fairphone, open Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi. This removes saved Wi-Fi networks as well as Bluetooth connections, so you will need to reconnect to wireless networks and pair Bluetooth devices afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Fairbuds also fail on another phone or computer after a fresh pairing, a handset-only reset is unlikely to solve the problem. Return to charging, earbud synchronization or hardware support instead.

Use Fairbuds with two devices

Fairbuds support dual-point connectivity, allowing them to remain connected to two devices. To add the second device without treating the first connection as a fault:

  1. Put both buds in the case and leave the lid open.
  2. Hold the case button for three seconds until pairing mode is active.
  3. Pair Fairbuds with the second phone or computer.
  4. Open the first device’s Bluetooth menu and reconnect Fairbuds there.

When troubleshooting, temporarily disconnect the second device. This removes automatic device switching as a variable; reconnect it after a single-device connection remains stable.

Make the Fairbuds app find the earbuds

The app does not replace Bluetooth pairing. The phone must already show Fairbuds as connected before you open the Fairbuds app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pair Fairbuds in the phone’s Bluetooth settings and verify that the status says Connected.
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled.
  3. On Android, enable Location and grant the Fairbuds app location permission. Android requires location access to scan for nearby Bluetooth Low Energy devices, according to Fairphone.
  4. On iOS, enable Location Services and allow the app’s requested permission.
  5. Open the Fairbuds app and tap Retry if discovery does not occur immediately.

The app can install firmware updates, change equalizer presets, show support material and help order spare parts. If Bluetooth itself cannot connect, resolve that connection first; changing app permissions cannot create a missing Bluetooth pairing.

Synchronize a replacement or added earbud

Use this procedure after replacing a lost bud or adding another individual earbud. It synchronizes the pair before you attempt normal Bluetooth pairing.

  1. Place both earbuds in the charging case and make sure they have charge.
  2. Hold the case button for 10 seconds until the LED blinks white.
  3. Close the case and leave it closed for at least five seconds.
  4. Open the case and pair Fairbuds again from the phone’s Bluetooth settings.

If the phone still shows the old pairing, forget or unpair that entry before pairing the synchronized set. A replacement procedure is not the same as the red-flash Bluetooth reset: the white blink indicates the earbud synchronization sequence, while three red flashes confirm that saved Bluetooth pairing data has been reset.

When a replaceable part is the appropriate fix

Fairbuds are designed around replaceable components. Fairphone lists LIR1054 earbud batteries, silicone rings, eartips, individual left and right earbuds, a 500 mAh charging-case battery, the charging-case outer shell and the charging-case core as replaceable Fairbuds parts. Fairphone says it aims to keep spare parts available until the end of 2030 (Fairphone, 2026 FAQ).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose an earbud replacement when the problem follows one bud after it has been charged and synchronized.
  • Consider an earbud battery replacement when the bud no longer holds charge but the case and contacts work normally.
  • Consider the charging-case battery when the case itself cannot retain energy despite a known-good cable and adapter.
  • Consider the charging core when the battery is known to work but the case does not deliver charge to a bud.
  • Use silicone rings or eartips only for fit or physical-wear issues; they will not repair Bluetooth or charging electronics.

Persistent faults that survive a correct reset, a known-good power path and testing on another device are a reasonable point to use Fairphone’s support or spare-part process rather than repeatedly deleting Bluetooth records.

Compare the tests before buying a part

Use a simple swap test to avoid replacing the wrong component. Keep the same case and cable while moving the left and right buds between their positions. If the failure follows the earbud, its battery or electronics are implicated. If any bud fails only in one case position, focus on that slot, the case contacts or the charging core. If both buds charge but pairing fails on every device, the Bluetooth reset and support path are more relevant than a battery purchase.

Likewise, compare devices before changing the phone’s system settings. A stable connection on a second phone or computer indicates that the Fairbuds can communicate and that the original handset, saved pairing record or local radio environment deserves attention. Failure on multiple devices after a fresh pairing points back to the earbuds or case. This symptom-following approach separates pairing, charging and hardware faults without performing destructive resets unnecessarily.

Common pitfalls that make troubleshooting take longer

  • Starting the app before Bluetooth says Connected. The app cannot create the underlying pairing.
  • Holding the case button for the wrong duration. Three seconds enters pairing mode; 10 seconds with red flashes clears Bluetooth pairing; 10 seconds with a white blink is the replacement-earbud synchronization procedure.
  • Testing range while the case is closed or the buds are still seated. Remove the buds and keep the phone nearby for a meaningful connection test.
  • Assuming a green case LED proves that each earbud is charging. It reports the case state, so reseat each bud and test whether the fault follows it.
  • Resetting Bluetooth and Wi-Fi first. That phone-wide reset also erases saved Wi-Fi networks and should be reserved for handset-wide Bluetooth failures.
  • Adding a second device while diagnosing dropouts. Temporarily disconnect the second dual-point device so automatic switching is not mistaken for a fault.

A practical order of operations

Follow this sequence when several symptoms appear at once:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Charge the case and both buds with USB-C, a known-good cable and a certified 5 V, at least 0.5 A adapter.
  2. Pair from the open case with a three-second button hold and select Fairbuds.
  3. If the old entry is present or audio still drops, forget Fairbuds, perform the 10-second reset until three red flashes, and pair again.
  4. For dropouts, test close to the phone, then test another phone or computer.
  5. Restart the original Fairphone; use Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi only when the problem appears phone-wide and you accept losing saved network connections.
  6. For app discovery, confirm Bluetooth says Connected, enable the required location permission, and tap Retry.
  7. For a replaced bud, run the 10-second white-blink synchronization before pairing.
  8. If the fault consistently follows a bud or the case after these checks, select the corresponding replaceable part or contact Fairphone support.

What the result tells you

Test result Interpretation Next move
Fairbuds pair normally after the red-flash reset The saved Bluetooth record was the obstruction Keep the new pairing and add a second device only after the first is stable.
Fairbuds work on another phone or computer The earbuds and case can communicate; the original phone is implicated Use the phone-side Bluetooth checklist and, last, the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi reset.
The same bud remains uncharged in any case test The issue follows the earbud rather than the phone Investigate its battery or replace the individual earbud.
Charging fails in one case position for multiple buds The case slot or charging circuitry is implicated Check the case charging path and consider the replaceable charging core.
Bluetooth is connected but the app remains empty after permission is granted App discovery is failing after the basic prerequisites are met Retry after reopening the app; if it persists, use Fairphone support and spare-part resources.

Further checks for intermittent symptoms

When the fault appears only occasionally, repeat each test under controlled conditions. Begin with a fully charged case, both buds seated, one phone within a few feet and no second device connected. Note the LED color before and after charging, whether both buds show the same behavior, and whether moving the phone changes the dropout. Then repeat with the same buds on another phone or computer. Recording which variable changes the result is more useful than performing several resets at once, because it reveals whether the trigger is power, range, a saved Bluetooth record or one physical component.

Do not infer a permanent battery failure from a single short session. Fairphone’s approximately two-hour full-charge figure and up-to-90-minute result from a 10-minute charge are reference specifications. A case that remains red, a bud that never reaches charge after a proper USB-C session, or a fault that follows one bud through multiple tests is stronger evidence of a power-path or replaceable-part issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my Fairbuds pair?

Put both buds in the open case, hold the case button for three seconds until the LED flashes blue, then select Fairbuds in Bluetooth. If an old entry exists, forget it first, hold the button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes red three times, and pair again.

How do I reset Fairbuds?

Forget or unpair Fairbuds on the phone, place both buds in the open case, and hold the function button for 10 seconds. Three red flashes confirm that the saved Bluetooth pairing information has been reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do my Fairbuds keep disconnecting?

Keep the phone and earbuds close, confirm they are charged, toggle Bluetooth, reconnect, restart the phone and test another device. Fairphone’s controlled unobstructed range is 10 meters, but walls and interference can shorten it.

Why is one Fairbud not charging?

Reseat both buds, use a known-good USB-C cable and a certified 5 V, at least 0.5 A adapter, and see whether the fault follows the bud or stays in one case slot. A persistent fault may require an earbud battery, individual earbud or charging-core replacement.

Why can’t the Fairbuds app find my earbuds?

Bluetooth must already show Fairbuds as Connected. Enable Bluetooth, turn on Location or Location Services, grant the Fairbuds app permission, open the app and tap Retry. Android needs location access to scan for nearby Bluetooth Low Energy devices.

Can Fairbuds stay connected to two devices?

Yes. Fairbuds support dual-point connectivity. With both buds in the open case, hold the button for three seconds, pair the second device, then reconnect from the first device’s Bluetooth menu. Disconnect the second device while diagnosing dropouts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What do the Fairbuds case LED colors mean?

Green means the case is fully charged, yellow indicates a medium level and red indicates low charge. The LED reports the case state and does not prove that each earbud is making charging contact.

How do I add a replacement earbud?

Put both charged buds in the case, hold the case button for 10 seconds until the LED blinks white, close the case for at least five seconds, then pair again. Forget an old phone entry if it remains.

How long do Fairbuds take to charge?

Fairphone specifies approximately two hours for a full earbud charge. A 10-minute charge can provide up to 90 minutes of playback, depending on use and battery condition.

Which Fairbuds parts can be replaced?

Fairphone lists LIR1054 earbud batteries, silicone rings, eartips, individual left and right earbuds, a 500 mAh case battery, the case outer shell and the charging-case core. It aims to support spare-part availability through the end of 2030.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with power and seating, then pair from the open case. Forget the old Bluetooth entry before the 10-second red-flash reset, and reserve the phone’s Bluetooth-and-Wi-Fi reset for phone-wide failures because it erases saved networks. For the app, Bluetooth must be connected and location permission enabled. If a fault follows one earbud or one case slot after these tests, use the corresponding replaceable part or Fairphone support rather than repeating resets.
