If Google Photos is not grouping faces or finding photos, first check that you are using the right account and that Face Groups is available and turned on. Then match the fix to the symptom: Google’s overnight refresh steps apply when existing groups lack newer photos, while a missing name-search result may mean the face group has not been labeled. Check backup status when a photo is missing from general search.
If People & pets or all face groups are missing
People & pets may not appear because Face Groups is off, no groups have been created, or the feature is unavailable for your region, domain, or account type. Start by confirming the Google Account shown in Google Photos is the one whose library you expect to see.
Check the Face Groups setting
- In the app: tap your profile picture, open Photos settings, and look for the Face Groups setting. Menu names and placement can vary by app version.
- On the web: go to Google Photos settings and expand “Group similar faces.”
- Confirm Face Groups is on. If it is on but there are no groups, Google says the People & pets area may remain absent if no groups have been created.
Feature availability can differ by geographic region, domain, or account type. If the setting is unavailable or the area remains missing, check Google’s Face Groups help for current availability and account details.

Google’s refresh guidance is for groups that already contain older photos but are missing newer ones. Keep Face Groups on; do not turn it off and on as a reset.

- Turn off your device’s power-saving mode.
- Connect the device to a charger and Wi-Fi.
- Open Google Photos and leave the device plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi overnight.
- If some photos are still missing, Google suggests repeating the process for one more night. You can also disable screen timeout while the app is open and the device is charging.
- Make sure Google Photos is updated.
Google does not promise an exact processing time, and it cautions that this procedure may not help when no face groups exist at all.
If searching by a person’s name does not work
Face labels are searchable only while Face Groups is on. A person or pet also needs a label before you can search using that name or nickname.

- Confirm Face Groups is enabled using the settings steps above.
- Open People & pets and check whether the person or pet has a face group.
- Apply a name or nickname label if one is missing. If a label is wrong, correct it; if a photo is in the wrong group, remove it from that group. The editing controls vary by platform.
- Search again using the label. Google notes that a face may not be available to label in all countries.

If general search cannot find particular photos
A photo missing from search may not be in the Google Photos cloud library you are searching. Check the account and backup state before troubleshooting search terms.

- Confirm that Backup is on and that the selected backup account is the account you are searching.
- On Android, check that the relevant device folders are included in backup.
- Check the overall backup status and the status of the individual photo or video. Google’s backup checklist explains where to check these details.
If an item was never uploaded to that account, it will not be part of that account’s cloud library. Google’s own reminder is: “Your missing photos or videos may not be backed up to Google Photos.”
Try a search that matches the kind of information in the photo
- For a scene, object, or place, try a simple descriptive query.
- For visible text, a filename, camera model, or caption, try putting the exact phrase in quotation marks. Quoted searches request exact text matches; unquoted searches are broader.
- For a person or pet, use the face-group label rather than assuming a name search will work without one.
On desktop, Google directs users to Google Photos search. App navigation differs between Android and iOS. Ordinary search does not require opting into Ask Photos; that experience has separate eligibility and availability, and is experimental where offered.

If results differ between the app and the web
As a practical diagnostic, compare the same account and query in the app and at Google Photos on the web. Check that the app is updated and that the relevant photos are backed up. If the issue remains, use Google Photos Help’s feedback or community routes and include your device, app version, whether the account is personal or managed, your region, whether groups are absent or merely missing recent photos, and whether the same photos appear on the web. Google’s help material does not establish a universal account-level cause or a guaranteed processing or restoration timeline.

Google describes Face Groups as a process that detects faces, creates numerical face models while the feature is on, and groups faces that are sufficiently similar. Google says face models may count as biometric data in some jurisdictions.

Turning Face Groups off deletes the face groups, face models, and labels you created. Google also says Face Groups content is deleted if the account is inactive for more than two years. Because disabling the feature removes this data, do not use an off/on toggle as a harmless troubleshooting reset.
