Excessive foam usually comes from a detergent-delivery problem, not from the pump itself. Use pressure-washer detergent at the label dilution, fit the low-pressure black SOAP nozzle, and then check the siphon hose, filter, injector and spray tip for kinks, leaks or dried soap. Clean or replace damaged parts, and flush the detergent path with clean water when finished. If the system still foams abnormally after those checks, follow the model-specific service procedure because an injector, unloader or pump fault may require approved parts.
What excessive foam means
A pressure washer creates detergent foam only when the chemical injector can draw soap through the pickup system and mix it with water and air. Foam that is unusually thick, appears in surges or continues after you release the trigger indicates that the detergent path is not operating at its intended flow. The usual causes are a concentrate that is too viscous, the wrong spray setting, a restricted filter or injector, or a hose that is kinked, cracked or allowing air into the siphon line.
Foam is not a reliable measure of cleaning power. More bubbles can mean the detergent is too concentrated or that air is entering where it should not. Using a high-pressure nozzle to force more spray does not correct the problem; it can stop the injector from siphoning altogether.

Safety first: depressurize before inspecting anything
Do not remove a nozzle, hose, filter or injector while the machine is running or pressurized. Follow this shutdown sequence unless your operator manual specifies an additional lockout step:

- Switch the pressure washer off.
- Close the water supply.
- Squeeze the spray-gun trigger until the trapped pressure is released.
- Disconnect the electrical supply or isolate the fuel-powered machine as directed by its manual before reaching into the detergent system.
- Wear eye protection and gloves when handling concentrated detergent or cleaning dried residue.
Keep the spray gun pointed in a safe direction during depressurization. Never test a suspected leak by holding a finger over a pressurized jet.

Step-by-step repair sequence
1. Verify the detergent and dilution
Read both the detergent label and the pressure washer manual. Use a product intended for pressure washers; household soaps can have a viscosity or foaming profile that the injector was not designed to handle. Action Cleaning Systems advises diluting detergent that is too thick and recommends the manufacturer’s detergent. A troubleshooting table from Shark likewise says high-viscosity detergent must be diluted to specification.
There is no universal pressure-washer dilution ratio. Concentrates differ, and some machines meter detergent through an injector while others use a bottle or onboard tank. Measure the amount stated for your exact product and machine rather than copying a ratio from another washer. If you have already poured an undiluted concentrate into the system, stop spraying and rinse the detergent container and pickup line before trying the correct mixture.

2. Select the detergent setting and nozzle
Most downstream injectors draw detergent only when water pressure is reduced. Install the low-pressure black SOAP nozzle supplied for your machine. The Kärcher operator guide states: “Install the black low pressure stream jet nozzle (SOAP) on the spray lance.” Use the model’s soap-siphon setting if it has a selector instead of interchangeable tips.
Do not assume that a nozzle with the same color or shape fits every washer. Check the wand connection and the manual before buying a replacement. Briggs & Stratton’s support guidance notes that a high-pressure-hose extension can prevent siphoning; remove such an extension during diagnosis. If detergent begins flowing only after the correct low-pressure tip is installed, the original setting was the cause rather than excessive soap concentration.

3. Check the pickup hose, filter and connections
With the machine depressurized, trace the entire detergent path from the container to the injector. The filter must be submerged in the diluted detergent. A filter hanging above the liquid level will draw air instead of soap and can create unstable, bubbly output.
- Untwist and reroute any kinked section so the hose has a smooth, open path.
- Look for pinholes, splits, soft spots, crushed sections and loose clamps.
- Check that each connector is fully seated and that its seal is not missing or damaged.
- Remove the filter and inspect its screen for dried detergent, grit or a film that blocks the openings.
- Rinse a cleanable filter with water; replace one that is cracked, permanently clogged or no longer seals.
Kärcher advises routing the hose without kinks and cleaning or replacing it. A damaged hose can both interrupt siphoning and admit air, which explains foam that pulses rather than flowing steadily. Briggs & Stratton similarly recommends checking hose placement and isolating a blocked chemical-injector section.

4. Clean the injector and metering parts
The chemical injector, metering valve and its small passages are vulnerable to dried detergent. A restriction changes the water-to-chemical ratio and can produce either no pickup or an unexpectedly thick burst of foam. Remove only the parts identified by your operator manual. Flush them with clean water and use the manual’s approved cleaning method.
Do not enlarge a nozzle or injector orifice with a drill, wire or other improvised tool. Changing the opening changes pressure and metering, and a damaged injector may no longer siphon correctly. If the manual specifies a removable screen, check that screen for blockage before condemning the injector.
5. Inspect the spray tip
A partially blocked spray tip can disturb the pressure conditions that make the injector work. After depressurizing, clean the tip with the tool and method specified for your model. Never substitute a larger or smaller orifice simply to alter the foam. If the SOAP tip is damaged or its connection does not match the wand, obtain a model-approved replacement rather than forcing it onto the lance.

6. Flush the detergent path
Once the blockage or connection problem is corrected, put the pickup tube in clean water and run the washer in its detergent setting until the discharge is clear. This removes residual concentrate from the hose, filter and injector. Flush after every use, because dried soap can harden inside a screen or passage and recreate the same symptom on the next job.

Replace only the component that matches the failure. A new SOAP nozzle cannot repair a cracked siphon hose, and a different detergent cannot clear a blocked injector. Compare the following before ordering:

Connector size, nozzle type and dilution instructions are model-specific. Take the model number and a photograph of the existing connection to a parts supplier, and compare the manual’s part description before purchasing.
Common mistakes that make foaming worse
Using a high-pressure nozzle for soap
A high-pressure tip is designed to maintain a narrow, forceful jet, not to create the low-pressure condition required by many chemical injectors. The result is often no detergent pickup, followed by a concentrated slug when the setting changes. Use the black SOAP nozzle or the exact soap mode specified for your washer.
Guessing a dilution ratio
Detergent concentrates are not standardized. A ratio that works in one bottle or machine can be too strong for another. Follow the product label and operator manual together, and measure rather than estimating by sight.

Leaving the filter out of the liquid
The pickup filter must stay below the detergent surface. If it is suspended in the container or resting against a dry sidewall, the injector draws air and the output becomes unstable.
Ignoring small air leaks
A loose clamp or hairline crack may not drip detergent, but it can admit air into the suction line. Tighten or replace the affected section instead of sealing it temporarily with tape.
Drilling out a blocked opening
Improvised enlargement changes the injector’s calibrated flow and can create a permanent pressure problem. Clean the part as the manual directs; replace it when cleaning does not restore the specified passage.
Storing the machine with detergent inside
Soap left in the tube or injector dries into a restriction. Run clean water through the system after each use and before long-term storage.

Foam is still too thick after correct dilution
Confirm that the diluted mixture is actually reaching the injector by checking the submerged filter and an unobstructed hose. Then verify the SOAP nozzle and inspect the injector screen or metering valve. If all three are clear, stop changing detergent ratios; a model-specific injector or pressure fault needs the manufacturer’s service procedure.

The washer will not draw detergent at all
Start with the nozzle and soap setting, then check hose placement, water supply and the injector for blockage. Briggs & Stratton lists hose placement, the low-pressure setting, extensions, water pressure and a clogged chemical injector among possible causes of failed detergent siphoning. Correct one variable at a time so you can identify which change restores pickup.
Foam appears only after the trigger is released
Residual detergent can remain in the lance or hose and expand when pressure falls. Flush the line with clean water. If foam continues from a clean-water flush, inspect the injector and follow the service instructions rather than repeatedly operating the machine.
Foam is accompanied by leaks, surging or unusual pump noise
Depressurize and stop using the washer. Leaks and surging can indicate a component problem beyond the detergent circuit. Do not defeat safety devices or continue testing with improvised seals; arrange service using the model’s approved parts and procedure.

- Before each job, confirm the detergent is pressure-washer compatible and mixed to its stated dilution.
- Inspect the pickup tube for kinks and make sure the filter is submerged.
- Install the correct SOAP nozzle or select the machine’s soap mode before opening the trigger.
- After washing, switch to clean water and flush until no detergent remains.
- Rinse the filter, allow removable parts to dry as the manual permits, and store the hose without tight bends.
- Replace cracked tubing, damaged filters and worn nozzles instead of continuing to operate them.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
Use professional or manufacturer-authorized service when the detergent path is clean, the mixture is correct, the hose and filter are sound, and the approved SOAP setting still produces abnormal foam. An injector, unloader or pump may require model-specific testing and parts. The absence of published performance statistics for this issue means there is no universal foam level or flow number that can certify a repair; judge the result against the machine’s manual and normal operation with clean water.
