If Escape Academy is stuck on the connecting screen on PS5, check the other player’s platform first. PlayStation cross-play is limited to PS4 and PS5; a PS5 cannot join a player on PC, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch. If the platforms are compatible, stop waiting after about a minute, check PlayStation services, test another online game, restart and update the console, and try Ethernet if available. A failure limited to Escape Academy should be reported to Coin Crew Games with reproducible details.
Start with platform compatibility
The most important check is whether both players are using a supported platform combination. The developer’s pinned FAQ says, “PS4 and PS5 can cross play with themselves only.” In practical terms, a PS5 player can join someone on PS4, but not someone playing Escape Academy on PC, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch. An unsupported pairing can look like a connection failure because the session never completes.

This compatibility information comes from a July 13, 2022 developer post, so it describes the published cross-play design rather than proving that every current build behaves identically. No later source in the available evidence expands PlayStation cross-play to other platforms. If your partner is on PC, Xbox, or Switch, changing network settings will not make that pairing supported.

Do not leave the connecting screen running indefinitely
Freezman, an Escape Academy developer, replied to a connection report on July 27, 2022: “It should connect almost instantly, no reason to wait more than a minute.” That is historical developer guidance, not a measured guarantee for every PS5, network, or software version. It does establish a useful diagnostic boundary: if the screen has remained unchanged for more than roughly a minute, cancel the attempt and move to the checks below instead of assuming it will eventually recover.

Record what happens before trying again. Note whether the host can create a lobby, whether the second player can see or join it, whether the screen freezes after an invitation, and whether an error message appears. Those details will help distinguish a lobby or invitation problem from a general online failure and will be useful if you need to contact the developer.

Determine whether the problem is PlayStation-wide or game-specific
After confirming a PS4-to-PS5 or PS5-to-PS5 pairing, test the scope of the failure. This prevents you from treating a service outage or home-network problem as an Escape Academy defect.
Check PlayStation service status
Open the official PlayStation service-status page from a browser or the console’s network troubleshooting flow and look for an incident affecting account, gaming, or multiplayer services. Status information can change quickly, so check it when the failure occurs rather than relying on an earlier result. If PlayStation reports an outage, wait for the service to recover before changing game settings.

Try another online game or service
Launch another game that uses online multiplayer, or use another online service on the same PS5. Use the same network and, where possible, the same PlayStation account. The result gives you a practical decision point:

A single successful test does not prove that every service is healthy, but a pattern across multiple games is more informative than repeatedly retrying one lobby. Run the safe PS5 checks in order
These steps are general PlayStation troubleshooting actions. They are sensible, low-risk checks, but the available guidance does not establish that any one of them specifically fixes Escape Academy co-op.
1. Close the game and restart the PS5
- Press the PS button, highlight Escape Academy in the switcher, and choose the option to close the game.
- From the PS5 home screen, open the power menu and select Restart PS5. A full restart is preferable to repeatedly reopening a suspended game session.
- After the console returns to the home screen, launch Escape Academy, create or join the co-op session again, and allow about a minute for the connection attempt.
Restart both players’ consoles if you are coordinating with someone on PS4 or another PS5. This removes stale suspended sessions without changing saved progress or deleting the game.
2. Install any available PS5 system-software update
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Choose System, then System Software.
- Open System Software Update and Settings and select Update System Software if an update is offered.
- Let the installation finish and restart the console if prompted before testing co-op again.
Update the other player’s PlayStation as well when possible. A mismatch between an up-to-date console and an unmaintained console can complicate diagnosis, although the available sources do not identify a particular Escape Academy version mismatch.
3. If the game will not launch, use launch-issue guidance
A co-op connection problem is different from a game that cannot start. If Escape Academy fails before reaching its menus, use PlayStation’s launch guidance. Depending on the situation, that guidance includes checking licenses where relevant and reinstalling the game. Treat those as launch-recovery options, not as proven remedies for a connecting-screen error.
Reinstalling is disruptive: it takes time and may require downloading the game again. Do not make it your first response to a supported-platform connection attempt that reaches the menu normally.

4. Repeat the test with a fresh session
After restarting and updating, have one player create a new co-op session rather than resuming an older invitation or suspended activity. The goal is not to change game progress; it is to establish whether the same symptom occurs in a clean attempt. Write down which player hosts and whether reversing the host changes the result. A change when the host switches is useful evidence for support, even though it does not identify a specific cause by itself.

Use Ethernet as an optional diagnostic
PlayStation’s general troubleshooting guidance suggests trying a wired connection where possible. Connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet, then repeat the same co-op test without changing the platform pairing or host. If the connection succeeds only when wired, the wireless path, signal conditions, or local interference may be involved. If it still fails, the test makes a Wi-Fi-only explanation less likely.
Ethernet is a diagnostic option, not a required purchase and not a guarantee of a fix. A Cat 6 cable can be used if you already have one or want a basic cable for this test, but it cannot make unsupported PC, Xbox, or Switch cross-play work, and it cannot repair a PlayStation service disruption or a game-side defect. Record whether the symptom changed, then return to your preferred connection if you do not need the cable for continued testing.
Use the symptom to choose the next branch
The following decision path keeps the checks in a useful order and avoids unnecessary changes.
- Different platform: If the other player is on PC, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch, stop. The developer FAQ limits PlayStation cross-play to PS4 and PS5.
- Supported platforms, less than a minute: Allow the normal connection attempt to complete, but do not repeatedly cancel it before the developer’s approximate one-minute boundary.
- Supported platforms, more than a minute: Cancel the attempt and check PlayStation service status.
- Other online games also fail: Work through PlayStation’s broader connection path and wait out any reported service incident.
- Only Escape Academy fails: Restart and update both consoles, repeat a fresh session, and optionally test Ethernet.
- Still game-only: Prepare a support report for Coin Crew Games with the exact symptom, any error text, platform pairing, host details, tests performed, and reproduction steps.
What to include when contacting support
If other games work and Escape Academy alone remains stuck on the connecting screen, escalation is more productive than repeatedly changing router or console settings. Steam’s technical-support listing identifies Coin Crew Games and provides Escape Academy technical issue support. The listing gives the customer-support email address hello@coincrew.games.

Send a concise report containing:
- The exact symptom, such as “stuck on the connecting screen,” and the point at which it occurs.
- Any error message, including its full wording and code.
- Whether each player is on PS4 or PS5. If either player is on PC, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch, mention that because the pairing is unsupported.
- Which player hosted, whether switching the host changed anything, and how long the attempt remained unchanged.
- Your country or region if the support team requests it, plus the date and approximate time of the failed attempts.
- Whether PlayStation service status showed an incident.
- Whether another online game or service worked on the same console and network.
- Whether restarting, updating system software, and testing Ethernet changed the behavior.
- Numbered steps another person can follow to reproduce the problem.
A short video or screenshot can clarify a visual freeze, but do not include passwords, payment information, or account-security codes. Keep the original wording of the error instead of paraphrasing it; exact text helps support search its records.

Assuming every connecting screen is a PS5 fault
The available evidence does not establish a widespread PS5-specific Escape Academy defect or a current game outage. A persistent screen can result from an unsupported platform pairing, a broader PlayStation problem, a local connection issue, or a game-specific failure. Test the scope before assigning blame to the console.
Waiting far beyond the developer’s guidance
Freezman’s 2022 statement says there is “no reason to wait more than a minute.” It is useful as a practical stopping point, not a promise that every connection will finish within exactly 60 seconds. Once the attempt has clearly exceeded that point, gather evidence and proceed through the diagnostic sequence.
Buying hardware before identifying the fault
A cable may reveal whether wireless networking is involved, but no source establishes that a router upgrade or other purchase is required. Do not buy networking equipment to solve incompatible cross-play or a PlayStation service outage.
Reinstalling before checking the basics
PlayStation’s reinstall guidance is aimed at games that will not start. If Escape Academy launches and only co-op remains stuck, begin with platform compatibility, service scope, restart, software updates, and the optional wired test. Reinstall only when the launch symptoms justify it or support specifically recommends it.

When the evidence points to a broader PlayStation issue
If multiple online games or services fail on the same PS5, focus on the platform and network path rather than sending an isolated Escape Academy report first. Check the current PlayStation service status, confirm the console is updated, restart the PS5 and network equipment according to your normal home-network procedure, and retest another online title. A game-specific email cannot restore a platform service that is currently unavailable.
If other titles recover but Escape Academy continues to fail, preserve the comparison: note the title that worked, the title that failed, the platform pairing, and the exact time. That contrast gives Coin Crew Games actionable information without claiming that the problem has a confirmed root cause.
When the evidence points to Escape Academy
A supported PS4-to-PS5 or PS5-to-PS5 session that fails while other online games work is the strongest case for game-specific escalation. It still does not prove a particular bug.
