HTTP 410 Gone means the server says the requested resource was intentionally and permanently removed. Reloading, changing browsers, or restarting your router cannot recreate a page that the site no longer serves. Check the address and the site’s replacement page first; if the URL should still work, the site owner must correct the origin configuration.

If the error appears while printing, it may refer to the retired Google Cloud Print service rather than your printer. Google discontinued Cloud Print in January 2021, so the remedy is to switch to platform printing, ChromeOS CUPS, a supported printing partner, or a PDF-to-Drive workflow.

Start by identifying which kind of 410 you have

The same three-digit code can describe different problems. Use the scope of the failure to choose the right fix instead of treating every 410 as a damaged browser or printer.

What HTTP 410 Gone actually means

HTTP status 410 is the server’s statement that a resource is gone by design. The owner may have deleted the page, retired a download, or deliberately configured the server to return 410 instead of the more general 404 Not Found. The code describes the response from the website, not a browser-specific malfunction.

On a site using Cloudflare as a proxy, Cloudflare’s support documentation says that a 410 is generated by the origin server and passed through the proxy. Its guidance is direct: If you encounter a 410 error on a Cloudflare-powered site, the issue lies with the origin server. That means changing a Cloudflare setting is not the first step; the site administrator needs to inspect the server, application, or content-management system that answered the request. See Cloudflare’s HTTP 410 documentation.

A 410 is useful when removal is intentional because search engines and clients can distinguish a deliberate retirement from a temporary outage. For a visitor, however, the practical result is simple: a genuinely deleted resource cannot be restored from the browser.

Fix 1: Check the URL and locate the replacement page

These checks cost nothing and establish whether you are chasing a stale link or reporting a real site problem.

  1. Read the address carefully. Compare the spelling, capitalization, hyphens, file extension, and path segments with a current link from the same site. Remove a copied fragment, obsolete query parameter, or extra character. A bookmark saved years ago may point to a retired path even when the site still publishes the content elsewhere.
  2. Open the site homepage. Follow its navigation to the relevant section rather than editing the old URL repeatedly. A publisher may have moved an article, changed a product path, or replaced a downloadable file.
  3. Use the site’s own search. Search for the page title, document name, or a distinctive phrase. The replacement may have a new address and may not redirect from the old one.
  4. Try the current link in the same browser. If the replacement opens, the 410 was accurately describing the old resource. Repeated reloads will not bring it back.
  5. Record the exact failing URL. Include the complete path, any meaningful query string, the date and time, and the browser or network on which it occurred. This information lets the site owner reproduce the request.

Do not ask a printer repair shop, replace a cable, or reset your router to recover a deleted web page. Those actions do not change the server’s response.

When only one browser or network sees the 410

A browser- or network-specific result deserves a limited local-state check. Open the URL in a private window or the browser’s troubleshooting mode, temporarily disable extensions that rewrite requests, and clear the site’s cookies and cached data. Then compare the result on a different connection, such as a phone hotspot, and with any VPN or custom DNS disabled.

These steps isolate local conditions; they are not a universal cure for 410. A 2022 Mozilla Support case involving a BBC request described a stale or altered DNS route to a former content-delivery address, while the support guidance suggested troubleshooting mode and clearing cache or site data. It is one historical example, not evidence that DNS is normally responsible. Read the archived discussion at Mozilla Support.

When to contact the site owner

Contact the publisher or administrator when the address is correct, the page is expected to exist, and the response persists across browsers or networks. Send the exact URL, the time observed, and a short description of what you expected to open. The owner controls the page, redirect, and origin routing; a visitor cannot repair those settings from Chrome, Firefox, or another browser.

Fix 2: Investigate an unintended 410 at the website origin

This branch is for site owners, developers, and administrators. Do not apply these changes to a site you do not control. First decide whether removal was intentional; only then change routing.

1. Confirm the content decision

Check the publishing record, release notes, and content owner. If the page was intentionally retired and has no genuinely equivalent successor, retaining a 410 can accurately communicate that decision. If a substantially equivalent page exists, the owner may choose to direct visitors there according to the site’s redirect policy. A redirect should lead to a real replacement, not a loosely related page chosen merely to suppress the error.

2. Look for an explicit 410 rule

Review the web-server configuration and per-directory rules for an intentional 410 response, including Apache .htaccess entries such as a Redirect 410 rule. Check the requested path, parent-directory rules, virtual-host configuration, and any routing layer that can override the application. Do not delete all rewrite or redirect rules as a guess: unrelated URLs can break, loops can be introduced, and security controls may be lost.

3. Review recent application changes

Compare the time the 410 began with recent CMS core, theme, plugin, framework, or deployment changes. A route removed during a release, a slug migration, or a plugin that marks content as permanently deleted can produce the status without any browser fault. Use the application’s logs and deployment history to identify the first change associated with the failing path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check caches after correcting the origin

Once the intended route is restored or a deliberate redirect is in place, purge or revalidate relevant page and reverse-proxy caches according to the site’s normal procedure. A cached 410 can continue to appear after the origin is fixed. Validate from more than one network and with a fresh request, and confirm that only the intended URL changed.

5. Understand the proxy boundary

Cloudflare states that it proxies a customer site’s 410 rather than creating it. If a Cloudflare-branded error page appears, trace the request to the origin and inspect the origin response and rules before changing proxy settings. The official explanation is the appropriate reference for that boundary.

The title-matched troubleshooting guide also highlights explicit Redirect 410 rules, recent CMS or plugin changes, and cache state as owner-side areas to inspect. Its checklist is a starting point, not proof that any single item caused your incident; confirm the intended URL and routing before making a change. See the guide’s 410 troubleshooting page.

Fix 3: Replace the retired Google Cloud Print workflow

If the message appears when you select an old Cloud Print destination, the service—not the printer—is the problem. Google’s migration documentation says, Google Cloud Print was deprecated in January of 2021 and is no longer supported. Devices on any operating system can no longer print through that service. Clearing browser cache, restarting the printer, changing USB cables, or reinstalling a driver cannot reactivate a retired endpoint.

ChromeOS: configure CUPS printing

For ChromeOS devices, Google documents Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) support for local and network printers through Google Admin. An administrator should identify the printer’s connection method, add the printer using the organization’s ChromeOS printing controls, and test a print job from a managed device. The exact fields and authentication requirements depend on the printer and network, so use the current Chrome Enterprise instructions rather than an old Cloud Print setup guide.

Other operating systems and mixed environments

For Windows, macOS, Linux, or an organization with several operating systems, Google recommends using each platform’s current printing infrastructure or working with a printing partner. Its migration page lists Directprint.io, LRS, NT-ware, PaperCut, Pharos, PrinterLogic, Printix, and Y Soft as examples. The list is an official set of possible partners, not a guarantee that every provider supports your printer fleet, region, security model, or budget.

Before selecting an organizational replacement, compare the factors that affect deployment:

  • Platform coverage: confirm support for every desktop, mobile, and ChromeOS version you actually manage.
  • Printer compatibility: inventory local USB printers, network printers, print servers, and specialty devices before migration.
  • Administrative controls: determine whether you need authentication, secure release, quotas, auditing, or usage reporting.
  • Operations: account for directory integration, software deployment, driver maintenance, monitoring, and vendor support.
  • Commercial terms: obtain current pricing, contract conditions, data-processing terms, and regional availability directly from the provider. The cited Google material does not provide a head-to-head price or feature ranking.

Save a document to Drive without Cloud Print

The former Cloud Print “Save to Drive” destination also ended for Windows, macOS, and Linux after December 2020. That does not prevent you from storing a document in Drive. In a supported desktop Chrome workflow:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the document and choose Print.
  2. In Chrome print preview, select Save as PDF as the destination.
  3. Choose a local filename and save the PDF.
  4. Upload the saved file to Google Drive, or use your organization’s documented Drive upload workflow.

This creates a PDF copy and uploads it; it does not restore Cloud Print or send the job to a physical printer. Google’s current migration instructions are at Migrate from Cloud Print.

Home-user migration sequence

For a single home printer, identify the computer or phone operating system, confirm whether the printer is connected by USB or the local network, and use that platform’s built-in printer setup or the printer maker’s current instructions. Print a test page after installation. If the printer is shared, verify that the device and computer are on the same network and that the account has permission to use it. There is no universal consumer replacement application established by the cited documentation, and an ordinary one-printer setup does not automatically require a paid service.

Choose the remedy by failure scope

Branch Who can change the outcome Useful checks Expected result
Old or mistyped page URL Visitor Correct the address, remove stale bookmark details, search the site Open the current replacement page, if one exists
Correct page URL fails everywhere Site owner Confirm removal intent, inspect 410 and redirect rules, review CMS changes, revalidate caches Keep an intentional 410 or restore/redirect the unintended removal
Correct page URL fails only locally Visitor or local network administrator Troubleshooting mode, site-data cleanup, extension/VPN/DNS comparison, alternate network Identify or eliminate a local routing or state difference
Old Cloud Print destination Printer or Chrome administrator Stop using the retired endpoint; configure platform printing or a supported partner Print through the current operating-system or managed printing path
Need a file in Drive rather than paper Document user Save as PDF in Chrome print preview, then upload to Drive A stored PDF, not a Cloud Print job

Mistakes that prolong a 410 problem

  • Assuming every 410 is a cache bug. Caches can preserve an old response, but the defining signal is still an origin decision or rule. Establish what the origin currently returns before purging anything.
  • Editing server files as a visitor. Only the responsible administrator should change .htaccess, CMS routes, DNS, or proxy settings. Random edits can damage unrelated pages.
  • Blaming the proxy without checking the origin. A proxied Cloudflare response does not mean Cloudflare generated the 410.
  • Confusing a 410 page with a printer hardware fault. A web status code and a physical printer’s readiness are separate layers. Retired Cloud Print software must be replaced with a supported print path.
  • Treating Save as PDF as a printer repair. PDF export preserves a document for storage or later printing; it does not connect to a printer or revive Cloud Print.
  • Redirecting every removed URL to the homepage. A broad, irrelevant redirect can confuse visitors. Use a replacement only when it is genuinely equivalent; otherwise, an intentional 410 may be clearer.

A concise administrator checklist

  1. Capture the complete URL, timestamp, response headers if available, and affected networks.
  2. Decide whether the resource was intentionally removed.
  3. Inspect origin routing, explicit 410 directives, CMS or plugin releases, and rewrite rules.
  4. Correct the route, restore the content, or document the intentional 410 decision.
  5. Revalidate caches and test from independent networks and browsers.
  6. For printing, remove obsolete Cloud Print instructions and deploy the platform-supported method or a documented partner solution.
  7. For Drive storage, publish the current PDF-save workflow instead of the discontinued Cloud Print destination.
