ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED means DNS could not turn the hostname in your URL into an address your device can use. The cause is usually a misspelled domain or subdomain, a missing or incorrect A, AAAA, or CNAME record, incorrect registrar delegation, a broken CNAME target, or a stale local resolver cache. Check the exact hostname first, then verify records on the authoritative DNS service, test several public resolvers, and allow time for corrected records to replace cached answers.
What ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED means
Chrome describes ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED this way: “The hostname (web address) doesn’t exist or now has a different IP address.” In practical terms, the DNS lookup for the name in your address bar did not produce a usable address. Your web server may be running normally; the request can fail before a browser ever reaches it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
DNS is hierarchical. A recursive resolver used by your device asks the domain’s authoritative nameservers for records such as an A record (IPv4), an AAAA record (IPv6), or a CNAME (an alias to another hostname). If the name is misspelled, the record is absent, the delegation points to the wrong nameservers, or the answer is cached incorrectly, the browser can show this error.
The error is different from an HTTP status such as 404 or 500. Those responses mean DNS succeeded and a server answered. ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED indicates that name resolution failed first.

Start by scoping the failure
Write down the complete hostname exactly as it appears in the failing URL. The DNS name may be the zone apex, such as example.com, or a subdomain such as www.example.com, blog.example.com, or an application-specific name. A record for the apex does not automatically create a record for every subdomain.
- Copy the hostname, not the whole URL. Remove
https://, the path, query string, and fragment. Preserve hyphens, dots, and the spelling of every label. - Try the same hostname on another connection. Use a phone on cellular data, a different Wi-Fi network, or another device. If many unrelated websites fail there too, investigate your local connection or resolver before changing the domain.
- Test both the apex and active subdomains. For example, check
example.comandwww.example.comseparately. Their records can be managed independently. - Note the timing. A failure that began immediately after changing nameservers or DNS records points toward delegation, record content, or caching. A long-standing failure may be a typo, an uncreated subdomain, or an expired domain.
If only one hostname fails while other sites work, continue with the DNS checks below. If all browsing fails, restore connectivity and confirm which DNS server the device is using before treating this as a domain problem.
Check the hostname and required DNS records
Correct a typo or nonexistent subdomain
A typo in the domain or subdomain can produce the same error as a server outage. Compare the failing name with the spelling in your registrar, hosting dashboard, deployment configuration, and any links you control. If a subdomain was intended to exist but has never been created, add its required record or change the URL to an existing name.
Verify the zone apex record
For the bare domain, confirm that the authoritative DNS zone contains the record required by your hosting provider. An A record should contain the intended IPv4 address. An AAAA record should contain the intended IPv6 address. Do not copy an IPv6 value into an A record or an IPv4 value into an AAAA record.
Some providers use an alias-type record for the apex instead of a traditional CNAME, because the DNS standard does not allow a CNAME to coexist with other records at the same name. Follow the provider’s documented record type and target rather than inventing a second record at the apex.

Verify every subdomain used by the site
For www.example.com, blog.example.com, or a service-specific hostname, check the exact label in the authoritative zone. Confirm that its A, AAAA, or CNAME record exists and that the value matches the destination supplied by your host. A record at example.com does not make www.example.com resolve unless a separate record or provider-specific alias handles it.
Validate CNAME records and their targets
A CNAME maps one hostname to another hostname; it does not contain an IP address. If www.example.com is a CNAME for site.host.example, the target itself must resolve. A typo, an unfinished target domain, or a target that was deleted can leave the alias unusable.
- Open the DNS control plane that is authoritative for the domain. If a hosting partner manages DNS, make the change in that partner’s dashboard rather than in an inactive zone elsewhere.
- Locate the CNAME for the exact failing label. Check spelling, the final dot handling used by the control panel, and whether the target is the hostname your provider currently specifies.
- Look up the target independently. If the target does not return an address, fix the target’s DNS or use the provider’s current target.
- Check for conflicting records at the alias name. A CNAME generally cannot coexist with A, AAAA, MX, or other records at the same owner name.
- After saving, query the authoritative nameserver directly and then query public recursive resolvers. This distinguishes a saved-but-not-authoritative change from a cache that has not expired.
Confirm registrar delegation and authoritative nameservers
Changing records in a DNS dashboard has no effect if the registrar delegates the domain to different nameservers. The nameservers listed at the registrar must be the ones that publish the zone containing your intended A, AAAA, and CNAME records.
- In the registrar account, record the domain’s currently assigned NS (nameserver) entries.
- In the DNS provider, identify the provider-assigned authoritative nameservers for the zone.
- Compare the two lists exactly. A single old nameserver, typo, or partial delegation can send some queries to a zone that lacks your records.
- Check the parent-zone NS response with a DNS lookup tool. It should return the same authoritative servers you expect.
- If you recently transferred the domain or changed DNS providers, confirm that the registration is active and that the domain has not expired or been placed on hold.
When several independent public resolvers fail, inspect the authoritative response as well as delegation. A nameserver that is unreachable, serving an empty or incorrect zone, or returning DNSSEC-related errors can prevent resolution even when the dashboard appears configured.
Compare multiple public DNS resolvers
Testing more than one recursive resolver separates a domain-wide problem from a failure on one network or resolver. Replace example.com below with the actual hostname. Google’s examples use a trailing dot when following fully qualified names; include it if your command-line tool requires an absolute name.

In a successful answer, look for the expected A or AAAA value, or a CNAME followed by an address for its target. An NXDOMAIN or an answer with no usable record indicates that the resolver could not obtain the name. A timeout may indicate a resolver or network path problem rather than proof that the domain is nonexistent.

| The error remains immediately after a fix | Cached old answer | Wait for the relevant TTL and propagation, then retest from multiple resolvers. |
Inspect the authoritative answer directly
Public resolvers cache answers. To see what the DNS provider is publishing now, query an authoritative nameserver rather than relying only on a recursive cache.
- Find the domain’s authoritative NS records using your registrar’s DNS information or an NS lookup.
- Choose one listed authoritative server.
- On macOS or Linux, query it with commands such as
dig example.com @ns1.example-dns.comanddig www.example.com @ns1.example-dns.com. Substitute the real authoritative server and hostname. - On Windows, use
nslookup, select the server withserver ns1.example-dns.com, and then query the hostname. - Repeat against another authoritative server in the set. Their zone data should agree.
If the authoritative server lacks the record, changing your computer’s resolver cannot fix the domain; correct the authoritative zone or the delegation. If the authoritative answer is correct but public resolvers are old, caching is the expected explanation.
Clear local DNS state when the site works elsewhere
When public resolvers return the expected answer but your device still shows the error, remove stale browser and operating-system state and verify the configured resolver.
Browser and operating-system checks
- Close and reopen the browser, then retry the exact hostname in a private window to exclude an extension or page-specific state.
- Flush the operating system’s DNS cache using the procedure for your version of Windows, macOS, or Linux. The command and required privileges vary by release, so use the operating system’s current administrator documentation.
- Restart the local router or DNS-forwarding service if it maintains a cache.
- Inspect the network adapter’s DNS server addresses. A manually configured, unreachable, or filtering resolver can fail while another network succeeds.
- Temporarily test through a different resolver or network. If that works, compare the failing network’s DNS settings and security software.
Chrome’s general loading-error guidance also recommends checking connection problems and security software. Firewalls, endpoint filters, VPN clients, and parental-control systems can intercept DNS or block a resolver even when the domain is configured correctly.

Allow for TTLs and propagation
DNS changes are not instantaneous. Recursive resolvers retain previous positive or negative answers until their cache timers expire. The relevant TTL is supplied with the DNS response; a resolver can continue serving an old address or an old NXDOMAIN response until that period ends.
Cloudflare’s NXDOMAIN guidance notes that changes may take a few minutes to appear, but the actual interval depends on existing TTLs and resolver caches. Do not declare a fix failed solely because one device still shows the old result immediately after saving.
- Keep the record value unchanged while waiting; repeated edits make it harder to tell which version has propagated.
- Retest the authoritative server first, then several public resolvers at intervals.
- Check from a second network after the expected TTL has elapsed.
- If one resolver remains stale far beyond the TTL while others agree, investigate that resolver or its forwarding path.
Common configuration mistakes
Editing a non-authoritative DNS zone
It is common to have a registrar dashboard, a hosting dashboard, and a separate DNS provider. Only the zone served by the delegated authoritative nameservers controls public resolution. Confirm delegation before spending time editing records in another panel.
Using the wrong record type or owner name
Enter an IP address in an A or AAAA record only when the provider supplied an address. Enter a hostname in a CNAME only when the provider supplied an alias target. In many DNS panels, the “Name” field expects only www rather than the full www.example.com; follow that panel’s convention and verify the resulting fully qualified name.
Forgetting IPv6 behavior
An incorrect AAAA record can direct IPv6-capable clients to a nonexistent destination even when the A record is correct. If failures affect some networks but not others, compare A and AAAA answers and remove or correct an obsolete AAAA value supplied by an old host.

Leaving DNSSEC inconsistent
After moving DNS providers, stale DS records at the registrar or an incorrect DNSSEC signature can make validating resolvers reject the zone. If several public resolvers fail while the zone looks correct, check whether DNSSEC is enabled intentionally, whether the DS data matches the current signing keys, and whether the new provider completed signing. Change DNSSEC only with the provider’s documented migration procedure; disabling or replacing records blindly can extend the outage.

- Query at least three public resolvers and compare their answers.
- If only your network fails, flush local caches, inspect resolver settings, and check security software.
- If the authoritative data is wrong, correct it and save once. If it is right, wait through the applicable TTL.
- Retest the authoritative server, public resolvers, and the affected browser before changing additional settings.
When to escalate to your DNS or hosting provider
Contact the DNS provider or registrar with evidence rather than only a screenshot. Include the exact hostname, the time in UTC, the networks tested, the nameservers delegated at the registrar, the record values you expect, and the outputs showing whether each public resolver returned an address, NXDOMAIN, SERVFAIL, or timed out.
Escalation is appropriate when authoritative servers disagree, are unreachable, return SERVFAIL, show unexpected DNSSEC validation failures, or continue serving an incorrect zone after the control panel reports a successful change. Ask the provider to confirm which zone is authoritative and whether there is an account, delegation, signing, or nameserver-health issue.
How to know the problem is fixed
A reliable fix has three parts: the exact hostname is spelled correctly; the authoritative nameserver returns the intended record and a resolvable CNAME target where applicable; and independent public resolvers eventually return consistent answers. Only after those checks should you judge browser behavior. If one device still fails while authoritative and multiple public answers are correct, focus on that device’s cache, resolver, network, or security software rather than changing the DNS zone again.
