ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE means Chrome received no usable data from the web server. It does not identify a single cause. First determine whether only one website fails or whether several websites fail; that split tells you whether to investigate the site itself or your browser, device, network, or security software. Then test reversible local fixes before changing server configuration.
What ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE means
Chrome describes the condition as: “ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE: The page didn’t send any data and might be down.” The browser connected far enough to wait for a response, but it received no usable response body. This is different from a DNS error, a timeout, a reset connection, or a refused connection, each of which indicates a different stage of failure.
The message is an observation, not a diagnosis. A web server can close a connection without sending content, an application can fail before producing a response, or a local browser, firewall, or network device can interfere with the request. Treat the error as a signal to isolate the failing layer.
Start by measuring the scope
When only one website fails
Open another unrelated website in the same browser. If other sites load normally and one URL repeatedly shows ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE, the affected site’s hosting, web server, application, DNS, TLS, reverse proxy, or resource state is more likely to be responsible. A visitor can report the problem, but only the site owner or host can inspect the server-side evidence.

When many websites fail
If several unrelated sites fail on the same device, investigate the local connection, router, public Wi-Fi sign-in, security software, or the device itself before changing anything on one website. Confirm whether the problem also appears in another browser or on another device connected to the same network.
When the site works on mobile but not Wi-Fi
Test the same URL over cellular data and then over Wi-Fi. A successful cellular test with a failed Wi-Fi test points toward the Wi-Fi network, router, DNS path, captive-portal sign-in, or network security filtering. It does not prove the web server is healthy for every visitor, so compare with another network when possible.

Fixes for visitors: work from least disruptive to most disruptive
1. Check the address and reload
- Confirm that the URL has the intended spelling, domain, path, and protocol.
- Reload the page once or twice. A transient upstream failure can clear without configuration changes.
- Open a different website in the same tab or a new tab. Record whether it loads.
Write down the time of the failure and the exact URL. A timestamp helps a site owner match your report to server and application logs.
2. Verify the connection
- Check that Wi-Fi or Ethernet is connected and that the device has a usable network address.
- On public Wi-Fi, open a new tab and complete the network’s sign-in or acceptance page. An incomplete captive-portal login can prevent normal web requests.
- Restart the modem and router, then wait for the connection to return before testing again.
- If the connection remains unhealthy across multiple sites and devices, contact the internet service provider.
3. Restart and update Chrome
Close Chrome completely, reopen it, and try the URL again. Then check Chrome’s Help or About screen for an available update and restart after installation. Updating removes known browser defects and ensures that the current networking and security components are in use.
4. Use an Incognito window
Open the URL in an Incognito window. Incognito limits the effect of existing cookies, cache entries, and most extension settings.
- If the page works in Incognito: the normal profile’s stored state or an extension is a strong suspect. Continue with the extension test below and then clear the affected site’s data.
- If it fails in Incognito too: the cause is less likely to be a normal-profile extension or cookie. Continue with network, security-software, and site-owner checks.
5. Disable extensions one at a time
- Open Chrome’s Extensions management page.
- Turn off every extension temporarily, then reload the affected URL.
- If the page now works, re-enable extensions individually and reload after each change.
- When the error returns, leave the responsible extension disabled, update it, or contact its publisher.
Testing one extension at a time creates evidence about the conflict. Disabling all extensions permanently removes a useful diagnostic signal and may leave the underlying conflict unidentified.
6. Clear cookies and cached files
Delete browsing data for the affected site, including cookies and cached files. Stored state can become inconsistent with a site’s current session or response behavior. Clearing it may sign you out of websites, so save any work before confirming the deletion.

After clearing the data, close and reopen the tab and enter the URL again. If the error disappears, the old local state was involved; if it remains, proceed to the network and security checks instead of repeatedly deleting data.
7. Check firewall and antivirus rules
Security software can block or terminate a connection before Chrome receives a response. Review recent firewall and antivirus events for the browser or affected domain. If you temporarily pause protection for a controlled test, restore protection immediately afterward and use the product’s allow-list or policy controls rather than leaving protection disabled.
On a managed work or school device, filtering may be enforced centrally. In that case, provide the administrator with the URL, timestamp, device, network, and whether other sites work.
8. Free device resources
Chrome can behave unpredictably when the device is under heavy memory or system-resource pressure. Close unused tabs and applications, restart the device, and test again. If every browser session fails only when the device is heavily loaded, resource pressure is relevant; if the failure is limited to one URL, do not assume memory is the root cause.
How site owners should investigate
When visitors report ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE for your site, do not begin by telling everyone to clear cache. First establish whether the server actually receives the request and whether it closes the connection before generating a response.
1. Reproduce from more than one network
- Test the exact URL from your normal connection.
- Test it from a different network, such as a phone’s cellular connection or another trusted connection.
- Record the UTC time, URL path, protocol, status observed in the browser, and whether the failure affects every page or only selected routes.
A failure from multiple independent networks makes a site-side problem more plausible. A failure confined to one network directs attention to that network’s DNS, filtering, routing, or security policy.
2. Compare browser behavior with a command-line request
Run a verbose request from a shell against the affected URL, replacing the example address with the exact page that fails:

curl -v https://site.example/Capture the complete output and timestamp. cPanel documents the equivalent server-side symptom as curl: (52) Empty reply from server: the connection was made, but the peer returned no data. That result is valuable evidence, not a complete diagnosis. A qualified system or network administrator may be needed to determine the correct fix.
3. Check hosting and service status
Review your hosting control panel and provider status information for outages, maintenance, suspended services, exhausted quotas, or a failed web-server process. Confirm that the domain points to the intended host and that the active virtual host serves the requested name.
- Check whether the problem began after a deployment, configuration change, certificate renewal, plugin update, or traffic spike.
- Compare the failing URL with a simple static asset on the same host, if one is available.
- Note whether HTTP and HTTPS behave differently; do not assume a redirect or certificate change is harmless when the server is closing connections.
4. Inspect web-server and application logs
Review access logs and error logs for the recorded timestamps. Look for worker exhaustion, upstream connection failures, crashed processes, uncaught application errors, permission failures, and requests terminated before a status line was written. Check application logs separately; a clean access log does not prove that the application completed successfully.
Preserve the relevant log lines before restarting services. Restarting can clear a temporary symptom but may remove the evidence needed to identify the trigger.

5. Validate DNS and TLS configuration
Confirm that DNS records resolve to the current server and that all expected record types and names are consistent. Verify that the TLS certificate, private key, certificate chain, and protocol configuration match the hostname. A DNS or TLS issue can prevent a usable response, especially when only one hostname or protocol fails.
Check from more than one resolver or network, because a stale or split DNS response can make the site appear healthy in one location and empty in another.
6. Review reverse-proxy and security rules
If a CDN, load balancer, reverse proxy, web application firewall, or host-level security module sits in front of the application, inspect its logs and routing rules. Confirm that the proxy can reach the upstream service and that health checks are passing. A proxy that cannot connect to its upstream may close the client connection without forwarding an application response.

Look for newly added rate limits, IP blocks, authentication requirements, header rules, or protocol restrictions. Test with a known permitted client and compare the proxy log with the origin-server log to locate the layer that stops the request.

Inspect CPU, memory, storage, process limits, connection limits, and database capacity during the failure window. An application that cannot allocate memory, open a database connection, or start another worker may terminate before sending headers. Resolve the limiting resource and then verify that the application remains stable under normal traffic.
Do not treat a temporary increase in capacity as proof of the cause. Correlate the resource metric with the timestamped request and error logs.

WordPress adds plugins, themes, loopback requests, and security rules that can fail independently of the underlying web server. Use a controlled sequence so that you know which change affects the response.
Deactivate plugins individually
- Open the WordPress Plugins screen and deactivate one plugin.
- Reload the affected URL in a private window or after clearing the relevant cached state.
- If the error remains, reactivate that plugin and test the next one.
- If the page starts working, leave the identified plugin inactive, update it if a compatible release exists, and review its logs or configuration before reactivation.
Testing one plugin at a time avoids mistaking a second unrelated change for the fix.

Test the active theme
Temporarily switch to a known-compatible default theme and reload the failing page. If the response returns, compare the theme’s PHP errors, templates, hooks, and recent changes before restoring it. Keep a backup of the current theme and record the exact switch time.
Check loopback requests
WordPress uses loopback requests to call its own site for scheduled tasks and background checks. A loopback failure can indicate that firewall rules, DNS, SSL validation, or HTTP authentication prevents the site from requesting its own URL. Confirm that the server can resolve the domain, establish the expected protocol, and authenticate where required.

Recover when the dashboard is inaccessible
Use FTP or SFTP to disable a suspected plugin or to switch the theme temporarily when wp-admin cannot load. Rename the specific plugin directory rather than deleting it, so the change is reversible. After access returns, restore the directory name and test plugins one by one to identify the conflict.
Also inspect firewall, DNS, SSL, and HTTP-authentication rules that may block WordPress from reaching its own URL. A dashboard that loads while front-end requests fail can still have a loopback or proxy problem.

Common mistakes that delay a fix
- Changing DNS before confirming scope: if only one browser profile fails, a DNS change cannot fix the local cause and may introduce propagation problems.
- Disabling every security control indefinitely: a short, controlled test is different from leaving a firewall or antivirus disabled.
- Deleting all WordPress plugins at once: this may restore the site but removes the evidence needed to identify the incompatible plugin.
- Restarting the server before collecting logs: a restart can hide the original crash, exhaustion event, or upstream failure.
- Assuming mobile success disproves a server issue: different networks can reach different DNS answers, proxies, or routes.
- Repeating cache clears without new evidence: if Incognito and another network show the same failure, move to network or server investigation.
What to include in a support report
A precise report lets a host or network administrator correlate the event instead of guessing. Include:
- The complete URL and whether every page or only one path fails.
- The exact UTC timestamp and your time zone.
- Your browser and version, operating system, and whether Incognito changes the result.
- Whether other websites work on the same device.
- Whether the site works from cellular data, another Wi-Fi network, or another device.
- The result of a verbose command-line request, including any
curl: (52) Empty reply from servermessage. - For site owners, matching web-server, proxy, application, DNS, TLS, and resource log entries.
When to escalate
Escalate to your ISP or network administrator when
Multiple unrelated websites fail across devices on the same connection, the router cannot maintain a connection, or a public Wi-Fi portal will not complete. Provide the affected times and whether cellular data works.
Escalate to your host or server administrator when
The site fails from independent networks, the command-line request receives an empty reply, or logs show worker, upstream, application, DNS, TLS, proxy, or resource errors. Request confirmation of the hosting service state and ask which log entries correspond to your timestamps.
Escalate a WordPress issue when
Plugin and theme isolation changes the behavior, loopback checks fail, or the dashboard cannot reach the site’s own URL. Supply the component name, test time, and whether the site recovered after the component was disabled.
Bottom line
ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE says only that Chrome received no data. Identify whether one site or many sites fail, test the browser and network with reversible steps, and collect timestamps before changing configuration. Visitors should isolate extensions, stored data, connection state, and security software. Site owners should correlate browser and curl behavior with hosting, server, application, DNS, TLS, proxy, and resource evidence. WordPress owners should add plugin, theme, loopback, firewall, DNS, SSL, and HTTP-authentication checks to that investigation.
