ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID usually means the browser cannot build a trusted certificate chain for your site. The most common server-side fix is to install the site certificate together with every required intermediate certificate, then select a chain that the affected browsers and operating systems trust. If the error appears only on one computer or office network, investigate that client’s trust store, clock, antivirus HTTPS inspection, or corporate proxy before replacing the public certificate.
Do not make visitors click “Accept the Risk” or add a permanent exception. That suppresses a security warning instead of fixing the certificate and can expose users to interception or impersonation.

When a browser opens an HTTPS site, it validates the certificate presented by the server and follows a chain of trust:
website certificate (leaf) → intermediate CA certificate(s) → trusted root CA

Chrome uses NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID when the presented certificate does not validate to a certificate in the Chrome Root Store or the user’s local trust settings. Firefox describes the same process: it checks the site certificate, any intermediate certificates, and a trusted root, while also checking that the certificate matches the requested domain.
The chain can fail when:
- The server sends the leaf certificate but omits an intermediate certificate.
- The server sends the wrong intermediate or an incompatible alternate chain.
- The certificate is self-signed or issued by a certificate authority that the visitor’s device does not trust.
- The root certificate is missing from the client’s trust store.
- A corporate proxy or security product replaces the public certificate with its own inspection certificate.
- The certificate is expired, not yet valid, or installed incorrectly.
A hostname mismatch is a different certificate error, but check the hostname during troubleshooting so that two problems are not confused.

First establish whether the problem is the server or one client
Test the exact HTTPS URL, including the hostname that visitors use. Record what changes when you vary the browser, device, and network.
- Open the URL in a second browser on the same computer.
- Open it in a private or Incognito window.
- Test from another device, preferably one using a different operating system.
- Test from a different network, such as a mobile connection instead of the office Wi-Fi.
- Check whether the failure affects every hostname on the certificate or only one subdomain.

Chrome recommends installing operating-system updates and checking whether antivirus software provides HTTPS protection or HTTPS scanning. Those features can replace a site’s certificate during inspection and cause an authority error even when the public certificate is valid.
Inspect the certificate before changing anything
Certificate details reveal whether the fault is on the server, in the chain, or on the client.

Chrome
- Open the affected page and select the site-information icon to the left of the address.
- Choose the connection or certificate details option. The exact wording can vary between Chrome releases; it may appear as “Connection is not secure,” “Certificate is not valid,” or a similar entry.
- Open the certificate viewer and record the subject names, issuer, validity period, and certificate path.
Firefox
- Select the padlock or warning icon beside the address.
- Open the connection details, then choose “More Information” and “View Certificate.”
- Review the certificate hierarchy, issuer, subject names, and dates.
Compare the hostname in the address bar with the certificate’s subject or Subject Alternative Name. Then check whether the issuer shown for the leaf is followed by the expected intermediate and a root trusted by that device. If the viewer shows only the leaf certificate, or marks an intermediate as missing or unknown, the server is probably not presenting the complete chain.
Fix the server by installing the complete certificate chain
For a public website, the server normally needs to send the leaf certificate followed by every required intermediate certificate. It generally does not need to send the root certificate; browsers already obtain trusted roots from their operating-system or browser trust stores.
Using a hosting control panel
- Obtain the current certificate, private key, and CA chain or intermediate bundle from the issuing authority.
- Open the panel’s TLS, SSL, or certificate-management area for the exact domain or virtual host.
- Paste or upload the leaf certificate in the certificate field.
- Paste or upload the intermediate bundle in the CA chain, certificate chain, or intermediate-certificate field.
- Confirm that the private key belongs to the leaf certificate, save the configuration, and apply or reload the web service if the panel requires it.
- Check every HTTPS hostname separately, including
www, the bare domain, and API or mail-related hostnames that use separate services.
Never publish or paste the private key into a support forum. Keep it restricted to the server or certificate-management system that needs it.
Using a web server configuration
Use the certificate file format and chain order required by your server software: leaf certificate first, then the intermediate certificate or certificates in the order supplied by the authority. Do not substitute an unrelated intermediate with a similar name. After changing the files, reload the web server and verify that the new certificate is being served by the public hostname, not merely present on disk.
Many certificate authorities provide a download containing both the certificate and a recommended chain. Let’s Encrypt explains that an ACME download includes a chain and that presenting the whole chain allows browsers to validate the certificate to a trusted root. Its documentation notes that a typical chain consists of the end-entity certificate and one intermediate, although the exact chain depends on the authority and compatibility requirements.

Resolve an incompatible or incorrect chain
A site may work on one platform and fail on another when the server sends a chain that the affected trust store cannot build. This is especially common when an older operating system lacks a newer root, when a server is configured with an obsolete alternate chain, or when an intermediate has expired.
Choose for the clients you actually support
- List the browsers, operating systems, embedded devices, and managed clients that must reach the site.
- Identify which group reports the error and note whether it is an older platform or a recently updated one.
- Review the issuing authority’s current chain options and compatibility notes.
- Select the chain that reaches a root trusted by the target platforms, then deploy the leaf and the selected intermediates together.
- Retest both the newest and oldest supported clients after deployment.
Let’s Encrypt documents ISRG Root X1 and ISRG Root X2 compatibility and explains that serving the wrong chain is a common reason a site fails on some platforms while modern platforms continue to work. Do not choose a chain solely because it works on the administrator’s computer.
Check local causes when the website works elsewhere
Incorrect system time
Certificate validity is date-dependent. Verify the computer’s date, time, and time zone, and enable the operating system’s automatic time synchronization. A clock that is significantly ahead or behind can make a valid certificate appear expired or not yet valid.
Outdated operating system or browser
Install available operating-system and browser updates. Trust stores are updated through these packages, so an old device may not recognize a root that current devices trust.

Some antivirus products insert themselves into HTTPS connections and generate a locally trusted replacement certificate. Chrome specifically warns that antivirus “HTTPS protection” or “HTTPS scanning” can trigger the error. Temporarily disable that feature only as a controlled diagnostic, then re-enable it and apply the vendor’s supported configuration or certificate update. Do not leave security protection disabled as the permanent fix.

Corporate or school TLS inspection
Enterprise proxies such as Zscaler, Palo Alto Networks, or Fortinet can decrypt and re-encrypt traffic. The proxy signs the replacement certificate with an organization-specific root certificate. Managed devices must receive that root through the organization’s approved device-management process. If an unmanaged personal device shows the warning only on the corporate network, contact the network administrator rather than importing an unknown root certificate yourself.
Retest from outside your own browser
After correcting the certificate or chain, use an independent TLS checker such as SSL Labs. Mozilla recommends SSL Labs when a site has an “Chain issues: Incomplete” result. An external scan helps detect a stale load balancer, CDN, reverse proxy, or second web server that is still presenting the old certificate.
Retest in representative conditions:
- At least one current Chromium-based browser and Firefox.
- The oldest supported operating system or device.
- A home or mobile network and the affected office network, if applicable.
- Every public hostname and redirect target.
Clear only local browser state if necessary, but do not treat cache clearing as a certificate fix. If an external scan still reports an incomplete chain, inspect the deployed certificate order and every TLS termination point.
Renew or replace the certificate when the chain cannot be repaired
Obtain a new certificate from a certificate authority trusted by the browsers and devices you support when the existing certificate is expired, self-signed for a public site, issued by an untrusted authority, revoked, or installed with the wrong private key. Deploy it with the complete chain and verify the renewal before the old certificate expires.
Public visitors should normally receive a certificate that validates without manual action. A self-signed certificate can be appropriate for a private development service, but every controlled client must be configured to trust its issuing root; it is not a suitable default for an Internet-facing public site.

Compare certificate and hosting approaches by operational fit
The cheapest certificate is not automatically the least expensive option to operate. Compare the following before changing providers or architecture:

Whichever approach you select, document the certificate owner, renewal method, chain files, TLS termination points, and alert recipients. A certificate that renews successfully but is not reloaded, or a load balancer that still serves the old chain, can recreate the same browser error.

Is it safe to bypass the warning?
No—not for a public website. Firefox warns that an invalid certificate can indicate fraud or interception and that permanent exceptions weaken security. A visitor who bypasses the warning may send credentials or payment information to an impersonator, or may be connecting through an intercepted session.
For an internal, deliberately controlled service, an administrator can install the organization’s root certificate through a trusted management process. That is an explicit trust decision for known clients, not a workaround to recommend to public visitors. Remove temporary exceptions after testing and fix the certificate or trust distribution instead.
