If an emoji appears as an empty square, a square containing a question mark, a diagonal box, or a blank space on Android, the phone or app usually cannot render that character with its available font. The emoji may still be intact in the message; only its visual glyph is missing. First determine whether the problem affects one app or many. Update the affected app, install available Android updates, and remove any custom font temporarily. Android 12 and later can update system fonts independently of a full system update, while Android 11 and earlier generally depend on the device manufacturer for new font files.
What a box or question mark actually means
Typography systems use a fallback symbol when they receive a character for which the selected font has no glyph. That fallback is commonly called “tofu”: an empty box, a box with a question mark, a crossed or diagonal box, or sometimes an empty gap. Unicode’s explanation of display problems identifies two usual causes: the character is newer than the font, or the application’s font and fallback logic cannot find a suitable glyph.
This is different from an emoji being deleted. In a chat, the underlying character sequence can remain in the message data even though your screen cannot draw it. A recipient with a newer font may see the intended emoji, while another recipient sees tofu. Complex sequences, such as a person combined with a skin-tone modifier, a family sequence, or a flag made from regional indicators, can fail even when the individual component symbols work.

Identify whether the fault is in one app or the whole phone

To test scope, copy the exact emoji from the conversation and paste it into another text field, such as a notes app or a second messenger. Do not substitute a similar-looking symbol. If it renders elsewhere, the original app is the useful place to troubleshoot.
Fix emoji boxes in the affected app
1. Update the app
Open Google Play, select your profile icon, choose Manage apps & device, and install updates for the app that shows tofu. An app can ship its own font resources or fallback behavior, so an Android system update alone may not change its output. After updating, force-close and reopen the app, then check the original message again.
If the app has no pending update and the problem occurs only there, send its support team the app name, exact version, Android version, device model, and one example of the failing emoji. Explain whether the same character works in another app. That information distinguishes an application rendering defect from a missing device font.

2. Check the app’s text or accessibility font settings
Some apps offer a text style, custom font, or compact-display option. Return that app to its default text style and disable any feature that replaces the normal system font. Labels vary by app, so look under its display, chat, appearance, or accessibility settings. This is a diagnostic step rather than a guarantee: the app may still lack support for a newer character.
Fix emoji boxes across multiple apps
1. Check the Android version and install available device updates
Open Settings and search for Android version, or open About phone and select Android version. Then search Settings for System update, Software update, or the manufacturer’s equivalent and install any available update while connected to power and Wi-Fi.

Update availability depends on the manufacturer, model, region, carrier, and support period. A message saying the phone is up to date means no update is currently offered for that device; it does not prove that every newly released emoji is supported. Restart after an update so font services and applications reload their resources.
2. Temporarily restore the default system font
If you selected a downloadable or manufacturer-provided custom font, open the phone’s display or font settings and choose the default system font. The exact path differs by manufacturer; search Settings for font if you cannot find it. Test the same message before reinstalling or changing other software.

Returning to the default font is a controlled test, not proof that every custom font is defective. If the default font fixes the issue, keep it or choose a font explicitly documented as supporting the emoji characters you need.
3. Restart and retest with an established emoji
Restart the phone after changing its font or installing an update. First test a long-established emoji, then test the character that failed. This separates a general rendering failure from support for a recently added character or sequence.

The Android Open Source Project documents this architectural difference. It does not mean that every Android 12-or-newer phone immediately receives every font revision; manufacturers and update channels still determine when a particular file reaches your device.

Android Developers also documents the Emoji2 library and compatible downloadable-font providers, including Google Play services. Emoji2 is a backward-compatibility approach that applications can use to display newer emoji on older Android releases. It is a dependency of AppCompat, so an app built with current Android components may display a character that another, older app cannot.
Understand app support for newer emoji
There are three layers involved when an emoji is displayed:
- The message data: the Unicode code point or sequence stored in the text.
- The application: its text widgets, fallback rules, and any bundled or downloadable emoji implementation.
- The device font: the actual glyph files available to the Android rendering system.
A failure at any layer can produce a box. For example, a current device font cannot help an app that replaces the normal text renderer with an outdated custom implementation. Conversely, a well-designed app can use Emoji2 and a compatible downloadable-font provider to support a newer character even when the underlying Android release is old.
Google Play’s Android Emoji policy requires apps running on Android 12 and later to support the latest Unicode Emoji. Apps using custom emoji implementations, including third-party libraries, are given a four-month window after new emoji are released to fully support the latest Unicode version. This policy concerns app developers; as a user, your practical actions remain updating the app and reporting a persistent rendering failure.
When only new or complex emoji fail
Newly released characters
Emoji are added through Unicode releases, but devices and apps receive the corresponding font data on different schedules. A 2022 Google explainer relayed a historical estimate that 96% of Android users could not see emoji released in the year they debuted. That figure describes the situation reported at that time, not a current adoption rate.

If an unfamiliar emoji fails while older symbols work, ask the sender to describe it or send a more widely supported alternative. Check the app and system for updates, then retest. There is no setting that can create a missing glyph before the relevant font or application support exists.
Sequences and modifiers
Some visible emoji are sequences of multiple Unicode characters. Gender and skin-tone modifiers, family groupings, professions, flags, and joined pictographs can require newer shaping and fallback behavior than a single symbol. One component may display while the complete sequence becomes a box.
Compare the complete sequence in two apps. If one app displays it and another does not, the difference is application support. If all apps fail but a simpler emoji works, the phone may lack the necessary sequence support; use a simpler symbol until an update adds it.

Android Developers mentions clearing Google Play services cache for a recently flashed device or a new emulator when startup font caching causes tofu. This is a targeted diagnostic for that situation, not a universal fix for ordinary phones.
- Confirm that the device was recently flashed, reset, or created as a new emulator and that the problem appeared during initial setup.
- Open Settings and go to Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Select Google Play services, open Storage & cache, and choose Clear cache. Do not choose a data-reset option unless you understand its account and service consequences.
- Restart the device or emulator, allow setup services to finish, and test the emoji again.
Menu names vary by Android build. If the phone was not recently flashed or newly initialized, skip this procedure and use the app-versus-device troubleshooting path instead.

What usually will not solve received emoji rendering
- Changing keyboards: it changes text entry, not the font used by the app displaying a received message.
- Repeatedly clearing every app’s data: it can delete local drafts or sign you out without adding a missing glyph.
- Installing an arbitrary font file: it may omit emoji, introduce fallback problems, or create new display inconsistencies.
- Buying a new phone as a first response: the evidence-supported fixes are updates and rendering support; hardware replacement is not a routine remedy.
- Assuming a sender’s phone is at fault: the sender may have generated valid Unicode text while your app lacks the font to draw it.
Use this decision path when the problem persists
- Reproduce it exactly: save the original message or copy the exact character sequence, noting whether it is a single emoji or a combined sequence.
- Compare apps: paste it into a second, unrelated app. Record whether the second app displays it.
- Record versions: note the device model, Android version, affected app version, and whether a custom font is enabled.
- Apply the matching fix: update the app for a one-app failure; install device software updates for a multi-app failure; restore the default font for a custom-font failure; use the cache procedure only for a newly flashed device or emulator.
- Escalate with evidence: contact the app developer when one app fails, or the device manufacturer when several apps fail after all offered updates. Include the exact sequence and screenshots from both a failing and working app.
Support teams can act more quickly when they know whether the character is missing everywhere, whether it is a new Unicode addition, and whether the failure started after an update or font change.
Answers to common questions
Why do I see a question mark instead of an emoji?
The question-mark box is a fallback glyph indicating that the selected font or application cannot render the character. It does not necessarily mean the message contains a literal question mark.
Why does the emoji work in one app but not another?
Apps can select different fonts and fallback implementations. One may use Emoji2 or a downloadable-font provider while another relies on an older bundled renderer.
Can Android 11 get newer emoji?
Yes, an individual app can provide backward-compatible support with technologies such as Emoji2, but Android 11 and earlier cannot update the system emoji font without an OEM system update. Results therefore vary by app and device.
Will an Android 12 update guarantee every new emoji?
No. Android 12 introduced FontManager support for independently managed system fonts, but the installed font revision, manufacturer update channel, application renderer, and the age of the emoji sequence still determine what appears.
What should I send an app developer?
Provide the app version, Android version, device model, exact emoji or sequence, a screenshot, and the result when you paste the same character into another app. This identifies an app-specific fallback problem without exposing unrelated message content.
Bottom line
Treat emoji boxes as a font or rendering-support diagnosis. Test the same character in another app, update the app when the failure is isolated, update the device when many apps are affected, restore the default font if a custom font is involved, and reserve cache clearing for recently flashed devices or new emulators. New or complex emoji may remain unavailable until the relevant app or font receives support.
