When Microsoft Edge will not sign in, or favorites, passwords, history, or tabs fail to appear on another Windows device, diagnose the failure in layers rather than immediately deleting data. Check the Edge profile and account first, then sync selections, Windows connectivity and sign-in, Edge’s own installation, and finally any work-or-school policy. This order separates account configuration from browser faults and reduces the risk of deleting synchronized data.

Identify the failure layer before changing anything

“Sync not working” describes several different conditions. Edge may be signed into the wrong profile, sync may be disabled for one data category, the browser may be malfunctioning, Windows may have loaded the wrong profile, the device may be offline, or an organization may control which account can sign in. The first safe fix depends on which layer is failing.

What you observe Most relevant layer Safe first check Why this comes first
The profile icon shows a different person or account than expected Edge profile or account Open the profile menu and select the intended account Sync attaches to the Edge profile that is signed in; opening Edge alone does not configure sync.
Edge is signed in, but only one category such as passwords or favorites is missing Sync selection Open Settings > Profiles > Sync and inspect that category Each data type can have its own toggle.
Pages, settings, or Edge sign-in behave erratically Edge browser health Update Edge, then consider Repair Repair targets a damaged browser installation without starting with data deletion.
Windows cannot sign in, loads a temporary profile, or has no internet Windows sign-in, profile loading, or network Restart, check connectivity, and address Windows sign-in separately An Edge setting cannot fix a Windows profile or device connection.
A work or school account is required, or a compliance message blocks access Organization policy Use the required managed Edge profile and contact the administrator if blocked Policy restrictions are controlled by the organization, not by a personal Edge setting.

The sequence below follows those layers. Do not skip to clearing browsing data: Microsoft warns that deleting data while sync is enabled can remove it from every synchronized device.

1. Confirm the Edge profile and account

Edge sync is associated with an Edge profile and its signed-in account. A Windows account being signed in does not prove that Edge is signed in to the intended account. Check the profile explicitly.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and select the profile icon near the address bar.
  2. Look at the account and profile name currently displayed. If it is not the account that owns the missing favorites, passwords, history, or other data, choose the intended account or select the option to add an account.
  3. When Edge offers it, choose Sign in to sync. If Settings is already open, go to Settings > Profiles > Sign in, as described in Microsoft’s Edge sync sign-in instructions.
  4. Complete any identity verification requested by the account. Return to the profile menu and confirm that the expected account remains selected.
  5. Repeat the check on the other device. Both devices must use the intended account; two different accounts can look similar while maintaining separate sync data.

If the profile menu shows several accounts, do not assume the first one listed is correct. Verify the account address and the profile name before changing any data. Switching profiles is safer than deleting a profile when the problem is simply that Edge opened the wrong one.

2. Check whether sync is on and which data types are enabled

After confirming the account, inspect the sync controls. Microsoft documents separate controls for categories such as favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill entries, and payment information. The labels and available options can change with the installed Edge version, so use the controls currently shown rather than relying on an older screenshot.

  1. In Edge, select Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
  2. Open Profiles, then Sync. You can also navigate directly through the Profiles section if the page layout differs.
  3. Check the overall sync status. If sync is off, turn it on for the intended profile and account.
  4. Review every category relevant to the missing item. For example, a missing favorite requires the favorites control; a missing saved login requires the passwords control. Enable only the categories you want synchronized.
  5. Leave the page open long enough for the status to update, then check the destination device while it is online and signed in to the same account.

A category that is absent on another device can therefore indicate a disabled category, not a failed account. Microsoft’s category guidance is available in Change and customize sync settings in Microsoft Edge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the category controls mean

  • Favorites: saved bookmarks and their folder structure.
  • Passwords: credentials saved in Edge; treat these as sensitive account data.
  • History: browsing history, subject to the options shown in your version.
  • Extensions and settings: browser customizations that may differ between devices.
  • Open tabs: tabs available for access across signed-in devices, where the current Edge version supports the option.
  • Autofill and payment information: form and payment data; enable only if that is appropriate for your privacy and organization rules.

3. Separate Windows sign-in and network problems from Edge problems

If Windows itself is not signed in correctly, Edge cannot reliably load the intended Windows profile or reach Microsoft’s services. Check the operating system and connection before repeatedly changing Edge accounts.

When Windows is signed in but Edge cannot reach sync services

  1. Confirm that the taskbar shows a working internet connection. Open a normal website in Edge to distinguish an offline device from an account problem.
  2. Restart Windows. A restart can clear a stalled sign-in session or network state without removing browser data.
  3. Check Windows Update and install available updates when practical, then restart if Windows requests it.
  4. Reopen Edge, verify the profile again, and inspect the Sync page after the connection is restored.

When Windows itself will not sign in

Use Microsoft’s Windows sign-in troubleshooting guidance for the operating-system failure. Depending on the symptom, Microsoft suggests checking for updates, trying Safe Mode, or trying another account if one is available.

  • Safe Mode limitation: Safe Mode sign-in requires the account password. Windows does not provide PIN or biometric sign-in there.
  • Another-account test: If another Windows account works, the issue may be confined to the original Windows profile rather than Edge’s installation.
  • Do not use an alternate account as a data fix: A different Windows account will not automatically contain the Edge profile or synchronized data belonging to the original account.

When Windows loaded a temporary profile

A message such as “We can’t sign in to your account” can mean Windows loaded a temporary profile. Microsoft explains this condition in its temporary-profile sign-in article. Treat it as a profile-loading problem, not as evidence that Edge sync deleted your data.

If you work in a temporary Windows session, save any work created there before signing out. Microsoft says files created in that temporary profile will be lost when you sign out. Resolve the Windows profile issue before creating or reorganizing large amounts of Edge data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Update and repair Edge without starting with data deletion

If the account and sync selections are correct but Edge itself is unstable, use the browser’s maintenance tools. Repair is intended for a malfunctioning Edge installation; it is not a guarantee that an account or policy restriction will be fixed.

Install the current Edge update

  1. Open Edge and select the three-dot menu.
  2. Choose Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge, or open Settings > About Microsoft Edge if that is the label in your version.
  3. Allow Edge to check for and install an available update.
  4. Restart Edge when prompted, then revisit Settings > Profiles > Sync.

Microsoft’s browser troubleshooting page, What to do if Microsoft Edge isn’t working, documents this update path and the repair option.

Repair the Windows Edge installation

  1. Open Windows Settings.
  2. Go to Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find Microsoft Edge, select its three-dot menu, and choose Modify.
  4. In the Microsoft Edge setup window, select Repair and follow the prompts.
  5. After repair completes, start Edge, confirm the profile, and check Sync.

Microsoft says Repair should not affect browser data or settings. It requires an internet connection and administrator rights. If Modify is unavailable because the browser is managed by an organization, do not try to bypass that control; contact the administrator instead.

5. Protect synchronized data before clearing anything

Clearing history, cookies, cached files, or other browser data can have a broader effect when sync is active. Microsoft states: Deleting data while signed in and syncing will remove it from all of your synced devices. Read the full guidance in View and delete browser history in Microsoft Edge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a scope decision before a clear-data action

  • Need to preserve data everywhere: Do not clear synchronized categories. Continue with profile, sync, connectivity, repair, or administrator checks.
  • Need to remove data intentionally from every device: Confirm the account and the exact categories selected in the clear-data dialog before accepting it.
  • Need to clean only this computer: Check whether the selected item is synchronized. A local-only action may have a different scope, but the dialog’s wording is the authority for your installed Edge version.
  • Unsure what will be removed: Cancel the dialog and establish the scope first. Do not use profile deletion as a diagnostic shortcut.

Sync is a data-consistency feature, not a promise that Edge is a backup system. Keep separate backups or exports where your data-management requirements call for them, and do not test a suspected sync problem by deleting the original copy.

6. Check work or school account requirements

Managed Windows devices can apply sign-in, compliance, and browser policies that do not exist on a personal device. An organization may require Edge to use a work or school account before it grants access to internal resources.

  1. Read the account or compliance message instead of dismissing it as a normal sync prompt.
  2. In Edge’s profile menu, switch to the required work or school profile, or add it if your organization permits that action.
  3. Sign in with the organization account and complete any required verification or device-compliance steps.
  4. If the organization blocks sign-in, the profile cannot be added, or a compliance message persists, contact the administrator or helpdesk. Provide the exact message, the account type, and whether personal Edge profiles work.

Microsoft’s compliance-error troubleshooting guidance covers these managed-account conditions. Do not disable security controls or attempt registry changes to evade a policy; those actions can violate organizational requirements and do not address a server-side restriction.

Symptom-specific fixes

Favorites are missing on the second device

  1. Compare the profile account on both devices.
  2. On the source and destination devices, open Settings > Profiles > Sync.
  3. Ensure the overall sync status and the Favorites category are enabled.
  4. Keep both devices online, restart Edge, and check the destination profile again.

If favorites appear in one Edge profile but not another on the same computer, the account/profile mismatch is the explanation; do not merge or delete profiles until you know which one contains the original data.

Saved passwords are missing

  1. Verify that the intended account is signed in to the intended Edge profile.
  2. Check that Passwords is enabled in the Sync page.
  3. Confirm that you are not looking at a work or school profile with different policy or data.
  4. If Windows is using a temporary profile, stop changing password data and resolve the Windows sign-in problem first.

Because passwords are sensitive, avoid copying them into unprotected notes while troubleshooting. If a managed device blocks password sync, ask the administrator whether policy intentionally disables it.

Edge repeatedly asks you to sign in

First distinguish a browser loop from a Windows sign-in failure. If Windows is also showing a temporary-profile or account-loading message, follow the Windows path above. If Windows is stable, check the Edge profile, network connection, updates, and organizational policy in that order. Repair Edge only after those checks; Repair addresses browser installation problems, not an account requirement imposed by an organization.

Only one device refuses to sync

Use the working device as a comparison, not as a reason to delete its data. Compare the account address, profile name, Sync category toggles, Edge update status, Windows connectivity, and whether the failing device is managed. A difference in any one of those items identifies the next layer to fix.

Verification checklist after each change

Make one change at a time and verify the result before moving to the next layer. This prevents a data deletion or profile switch from obscuring the original cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows is signed in to the expected account and is not using a temporary profile.
  • The device has a working internet connection.
  • Edge’s profile icon shows the intended account.
  • The overall Sync setting is on.
  • The specific missing data category is enabled.
  • Edge is current, or Repair has completed if browser malfunction was the identified layer.
  • No work-or-school policy or compliance message is blocking the required profile.
  • No clear-data or profile-deletion action has been taken without confirming its scope.

Once the checks pass, add or change a small, non-sensitive test item—such as a temporary favorite—and observe whether it reaches the other device. Remove that test item only after you understand whether its deletion is synchronized.

When to stop troubleshooting and escalate

Contact Microsoft support or your organization’s administrator when the correct account and category are enabled, Windows and Edge are healthy, and the problem still persists; when an organization-managed browser hides the Modify option; when compliance blocks access; or when Windows repeatedly loads a temporary profile. Include the Edge version shown on the About page, Windows version, account type (personal or managed), exact error wording, affected data category, and which devices are affected. Do not include passwords or other secret credentials in a support request.

This evidence lets support distinguish an Edge installation problem from an account, Windows profile, network, or policy problem without asking you to erase synchronized data prematurely.
