Stop drafts by matching the repair to the leak: use weatherstripping where a window or door moves, and use caulk, backer rod, or low-expansion window-and-door foam where the gap is fixed. Find the leak before buying materials, correct a loose exterior door before sealing it, and check ventilation and moisture after the work.
Find the leak before you seal anything
A cold spot is not proof that the window or door itself is leaking. Air can travel through trim joints, the rough opening between the unit and framing, a door threshold, or even an attic or basement bypass and emerge near the opening. Start with a short, repeatable inspection so you repair the actual air path.
Use a paper test on a closed window
- Open the window and place a sheet of paper across the meeting edge of the sash and frame.
- Close and latch the window on the paper.
- Pull the paper. If it slides out with little resistance, the compression seal is not closing firmly at that point.
- Repeat at the top, bottom, and both sides. Mark each weak section with removable tape.
ENERGY STAR lists a “Drafts around your closed window or door” as a sign of leakage. A paper test shows whether a moving joint is failing to compress; it does not locate a leak hidden behind trim.

Use incense smoke at seams
- Close the window or door and turn off fans that could move air across the test area.
- Hold a smoking incense stick near the sash seam, frame-to-wall joint, trim mitres, threshold, and door-bottom corners.
- Watch the smoke. A steady sideways pull indicates air movement; smoke that rises normally suggests no detectable flow at that instant.
- Mark the exact point and repeat on a windy day and a calm day if the result is uncertain.
Do not use an open flame for this test. Keep incense away from curtains and other combustibles, and ventilate when finished.

Look for visible and operating clues
- Daylight visible around a closed sash, frame, or door perimeter indicates an open path that needs attention.
- A loose-fitting exterior door, rattling hardware, or a latch that does not pull the slab tightly against its seals points to an adjustment problem before a weatherstrip problem.
- Peeling caulk, cracked mitred trim joints, shrunken sealant, and gaps at the threshold are fixed-joint candidates.
- Condensation or frost on interior glass can indicate a cold surface and excess indoor moisture, not only an air leak.
Record the location, approximate gap width, whether the joint moves, and whether the door or window still operates freely. That record determines the repair method.
Check the rest of the house when leaks are substantial
Sealing an opening can improve comfort while a larger bypass remains in an attic, basement, crawlspace, or mechanical chase. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recommends a whole-house approach when leakage is significant. A blower-door test can quantify leakage and help prioritize work instead of treating every cool draft as a window defect.
Choose the repair by leak type
| Leak location | Moves during operation? | Appropriate treatment | Selection and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sash meeting rail, jamb, or operable door edge | Yes | Weatherstripping | Choose a profile that closes the measured gap, stays flexible in cold weather, and does not obstruct opening, closing, or latching. |
| Window trim-to-wall joint or door-frame trim joint | No | Paintable caulk | Use a continuous bead on a clean, dry joint; seal mitred trim joints and the trim-to-frame line where appropriate. |
| Wide, deep joint that cannot be filled economically with caulk | No | Foam backer rod followed by caulk | Choose a rod that fits without being forced deep into the cavity; cover it with a durable sealant. |
| Space between a window or door unit and rough framing | No | Low-expansion foam labeled for windows and doors, caulk, or backer rod | Use low-expansion product so the frame is not bowed. Fibrous insulation alone does not stop airflow. |
| Exterior door bottom and threshold | Yes at the sweep; fixed at the threshold | Door sweep or gasketed door-bottom seal, with threshold adjustment where provided | Keep the sweep in contact without creating drag that prevents smooth operation. |
Weatherstripping for moving joints
Weatherstripping is intended for operable windows and doors. The seal must compress or flex when the unit closes and recover when it opens. Measure the gap at several points rather than assuming it is uniform; a profile that works at one corner may be too thick elsewhere.
Common profiles
- Foam tape: Compressible and simple to install on a clean, even surface. It suits small, regular gaps but can wear or lose resilience sooner than more robust profiles.
- V-strip: A folded strip that springs open against a moving edge. It is useful where a narrow, continuous seal is needed and the channel can accept it.
- Tubular gasket: A hollow, compressible seal for a larger or less uniform gap. It needs enough clearance for the door or sash to close without excessive force.
- Magnetic weatherstripping: Magnetic faces pull together when aligned, commonly on suitable door or window systems. Verify that the existing frame and sash geometry can accommodate the profile.
- Compression weatherstripping: A gasket that is squeezed between the closed unit and its stop. It provides a strong seal when the gap and stop are consistent.
For any profile, confirm three things before fastening it: the closed joint actually compresses the material, the material remains pliable at winter temperatures, and the hardware can still operate normally. If the seal makes a window hard to latch or a door spring open, it is too thick, misplaced, or being used to compensate for a structural alignment problem.

Materials and safety equipment
- Weatherstripping kit in the selected foam, V-strip, tubular, magnetic, or compression profile.
- Exterior door sweep or gasketed door-bottom seal.
- Paintable interior or exterior caulk matched to the joint and a caulk gun.
- Foam backer rod for larger joints.
- Low-expansion spray foam specifically labeled for windows and doors.
- Measuring tape, utility knife, screwdriver or drill, and the fasteners supplied with the seal.
- Gloves and eye protection; add a dust mask when fiberglass or dusty insulation may be disturbed.
Clean dirt, loose paint, failed sealant, and grease from bonding surfaces. Let damp surfaces dry. Do not cover a drainage path or weep opening in a window frame, and do not fill a door threshold channel that is designed to shed water.
Seal a drafty window
1. Identify the moving and fixed joints
Use the paper and smoke tests to separate the sash perimeter from the trim and rough opening. A sash leak calls for weatherstripping; a trim or frame-to-wall leak calls for caulk or another fixed-joint treatment. If the frame itself is loose, sealing the visible interior line may hide, rather than correct, the movement.
2. Install weatherstripping on the operable sash
- Measure the top, bottom, and side runs independently and note the gap at each end.
- Clean and dry the contact surface. Remove old, brittle material without gouging the frame.
- Cut each piece to the measured length. Keep corners neat and avoid stretching adhesive-backed products, which can shrink back later.
- Place the profile where the closed sash will compress it, not where it will be scraped off during operation.
- Close and latch the window, then reopen it. Confirm an even seal and normal handle or latch force.
3. Caulk fixed trim joints
Apply a continuous, controlled bead where window trim meets the wall, at mitred trim joints, and between trim and frame when those joints are the leak path. Tool the bead so it contacts both sides of the joint without smearing onto the glass or blocking drainage. Follow the sealant label for temperature, drying, and paint-recoat limits.

The rough opening is the space between the installed window unit and surrounding framing. Fill that space with caulk, foam backer rod, or low-expansion canned foam made for windows and doors. Apply foam sparingly in stages; excessive expansion can bow the jamb and make the sash bind. DOE Building Science Education states: “Do not rely on fibrous insulation alone to block airflow; it will not air seal.”

Seal fixed gaps around windows and doors
When caulk is the right tool
Use caulk for a narrow, stable joint that can be cleaned and reached from the surface. Remove loose material, cut the nozzle to a bead slightly smaller than the joint, and push the bead ahead of the nozzle so it wets both edges. Tool it promptly and remove excess before it skins. A paintable product is useful where the repair will be finished to match the trim; use an exterior-rated product on weather-exposed joints.
When to add backer rod
For a deeper or wider joint, press foam backer rod into the opening first, leaving the sealant at the surface rather than filling the entire cavity with caulk. The rod reduces sealant volume and gives the bead a stable shape. Do not compress it so aggressively that it pushes the trim apart.
When to use window-and-door foam
Low-expansion spray foam is suitable for an accessible gap between the unit and framing when the can is labeled for windows and doors. Protect finished surfaces, use eye protection and gloves, and follow the product’s cure and cleanup instructions. Keep the nozzle moving and fill in lifts; cured foam is difficult to remove without damaging trim. Trim only after it has cured, then cover it where the product requires protection from sunlight or moisture.
Fix an exterior door in the correct order
A door that is out of alignment can defeat new weatherstripping. Adjust the fit first, then install seals.

1. Correct movement and hardware
- Tighten loose hinge screws and replace stripped fasteners with suitable longer screws where the frame construction allows.
- Check the knob, latch, and strike plate. The latch should engage without lifting, pushing, or slamming the door.
- Move or adjust the strike plate only as needed to pull the closed slab evenly against its seals.
- Repair or replace a warped door, damaged frame, failed gasket, or hardware that cannot hold alignment. Natural Resources Canada advises repair or replacement when a door does not fit snugly.
2. Measure each run
- Measure the left side, right side, and top of the door frame separately; measure the bottom for the sweep.
- Check the gap at several points with the door closed. Use the largest gap to select a profile, but verify that the smallest gap will not be over-compressed.
- Cut side and top pieces to length. Notch side pieces around corners when the manufacturer’s instructions call for a continuous top seal.
3. Install side and top weatherstripping
- Dry-fit the pieces with the door closed and mark the screw-hole positions.
- Apply a thin bead of caulk behind the weatherstrip, aligned with the screw holes, when the installation instructions specify a sealed backing.
- Fasten with the manufacturer’s screws. Start at the middle and work toward the ends so the strip stays straight; do not overtighten and deform the profile.
- Close the door repeatedly. The seal should make continuous contact while the latch engages smoothly.
4. Install and test the bottom sweep
Fit the sweep or gasketed door-bottom seal so it contacts the threshold evenly. Trim only as directed by the manufacturer. Open the door slowly to check for rubbing, then close and latch it from both inside and outside. A sweep that drags can wear quickly and may prevent the latch from aligning.
Manage condensation after air sealing
Caulking and storm windows can keep interior glass warmer and reduce condensation, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. They do not remove moisture generated by cooking, bathing, drying clothes, or occupants.
- Run kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans during moisture-producing activities and for the period recommended by the fan manufacturer.
- Use a dehumidifier or adjust heating and ventilation when indoor humidity remains high.
- After sealing a noticeably leaky home, watch for persistent window condensation, musty odors, or damp framing. A tighter envelope may require better planned ventilation.
- Do not seal over evidence of bulk water entry. Repair roof, siding, flashing, sill, or threshold drainage problems separately.
Know when a professional is safer
Hire qualified help for complicated trim, inaccessible rough openings, major frame movement, water damage, or a door that cannot be made square and latching with ordinary adjustment. ENERGY STAR specifically recommends professional assistance for complicated trim and for homes built before 1978 where disturbing painted surfaces may create lead hazards.
A whole-house assessment is appropriate when drafts persist after opening repairs, rooms have combustion appliances, or ventilation and moisture are uncertain. DOE’s broader approach can include combustion-appliance safety testing, ventilation evaluation, moisture assessment, and blower-door testing. These checks go beyond a simple caulk-and-weatherstrip project.

What results are realistic?
ENERGY STAR reports potential savings of up to 10% on annual energy bills; the accessed page does not state a year for that figure, and actual savings depend on the home’s leakage, weather, heating system, and occupant behavior. DOE materials published in a 2021 context estimate that roughly 10%–20% of annual average U.S. energy cost is wasted through drafts, air leaks around openings, and outdated heating and cooling systems. Those are broad estimates, not a guaranteed saving from sealing one window or door.
Air-sealing performance can be dramatic when a large rough-opening gap is treated correctly. A DOE Building Science Education summary reports an Oak Ridge National Laboratory Buildings Technology Center study in which sealing a 3/4-inch rough-opening gap reduced equivalent leakage area from 28.2 cm²/m² to 0.5 cm²/m². The result describes that tested assembly, not every installation.
Troubleshoot after installation
The draft remains at the sash or door edge
Re-run the paper test. If the paper still pulls out easily, the profile may be too thin, interrupted at a corner, installed on the wrong surface, or unable to compensate for a warped or misaligned frame. Correct alignment before adding thicker material.

Remove or reposition the weatherstrip if the unit binds. Check for an over-thick profile, fasteners driven too tightly, foam expansion that bowed the jamb, or hinges and strike plates that need adjustment. A seal that prevents normal operation is not a successful repair.
Cold air comes from trim, not the moving joint
Inspect the trim-to-wall and trim-to-frame lines for a continuous gap. Re-caulk only after removing failed sealant and drying the joint. If the gap is deep, use backer rod or low-expansion window-and-door foam rather than a thick surface-only bead.
Condensation increases after sealing
Measure or otherwise assess indoor humidity, use kitchen and bath ventilation, and inspect for concealed moisture. Air sealing can expose a ventilation deficiency; it should not be reversed simply because a tighter room needs a planned way to exhaust moisture.
The room is still cold even though the opening passes the tests
Look for leaks at the attic, basement, crawlspace, ductwork, and other penetrations. DOE notes that significant leakage can be hidden in those areas, so a whole-house audit may produce more benefit than adding another layer around an already sealed opening.
