The right fix depends on what fails. A crash before the main menu calls for launch and system checks; a low frame rate or hitching calls for graphics settings and API testing; missing, distorted, or unusually fast sound calls for Windows playback and format checks. Start with the matching section below instead of changing every setting at once.
- Crashes on launch: check requirements, graphics drivers, Steam files, GPU selection, DirectX, and security software.
- Low frame rate or stuttering: update the driver, confirm the primary GPU, reduce demanding settings, close background programs, and test Vulkan or OpenGL.
- Missing, distorted, fast, or high-pitched audio: check DOOM’s Audio menu, the selected Windows playback device, and the device’s default format.
These are the troubleshooting paths Bethesda Support publishes for DOOM on PC. None is guaranteed to solve every configuration, so test one change at a time and keep track of the setting that changed the symptom.
Check the PC requirements before changing settings
Confirm that the computer is at least within DOOM’s listed minimum specification. Steam’s game listing gives the following historical requirements:
| Component | Minimum listed requirement |
|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-2400 or AMD FX-8320 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 with 2 GB or AMD Radeon HD 7870 with 2 GB |
| Storage | 55 GB available space |
Those figures describe the game listing, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or a diagnosis of a failing component. A system below them can explain crashes or severe performance limits, but meeting them does not rule out driver, API, file, or audio-device problems.

Keep the operating-system requirement separate from Steam’s client policy. Steam states that its client supports Windows 10 and later beginning January 1, 2024. That notice does not rewrite DOOM’s older, historical game-requirement listing. If you are using an older Windows edition, both the game requirement and the current Steam-client support policy can affect whether the installation is practical.
When DOOM crashes before or during launch
A launch crash means the game closes, freezes, or returns to the desktop before you can play reliably. Work through these checks in order, restarting the game after each material change.
1. Update the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer
Install the current driver offered by the manufacturer of the installed NVIDIA or AMD GPU. A driver package supplied by the computer maker may be older than the GPU vendor’s current package. Reboot Windows after installation, then try DOOM again.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not use the driver numbers in Bethesda’s July 2016 Vulkan FAQ as current recommendations. They document the state of support at that time; they are not an up-to-date driver target for a 2026 installation.
2. Verify the Steam installation
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click DOOM and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
Steam replaces or reacquires files that fail its integrity check. If the check reports no problems, continue rather than repeating it indefinitely.
3. Force the game to use the primary or high-performance GPU
Systems with integrated and discrete graphics can launch DOOM on the lower-power adapter. In the NVIDIA or AMD graphics control panel, add DOOMx64.exe if necessary and assign it to the primary or high-performance GPU. Save the profile, then launch the game again.
The exact control-panel wording varies by driver and Windows version. The important result is that the executable is mapped to the GPU intended for games, not the integrated adapter.

4. Check DirectX and security software
Bethesda’s launch-crash guidance includes checking DirectX and whether a firewall or antivirus product is blocking the game. Confirm that Windows and the installed DirectX components are not damaged, and review security alerts for a blocked DOOM executable.
Windows Defender can be tested by adding an exception for the game, as Bethesda suggests. Add the narrowest exception possible, use the real game installation path, and remove the exception if it does not help. Do not disable all security protection permanently just to test a launch.
5. Escalate with a DxDiag report
If the crash remains after the driver, file, GPU, DirectX, and security checks, contact Bethesda Support and include a DxDiag report. To create one in Windows, press Win+R, enter dxdiag, allow the diagnostic window to finish loading, and choose Save All Information. Attach the resulting text file along with a description of when the crash occurs and which checks you already completed.
When frame rate is low or the game stutters
Stuttering is inconsistent delivery of frames, while a low frame rate is persistently slow rendering. They can occur together, but use the same baseline sequence before deciding that a graphics card must be replaced.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Establish the baseline
- Confirm that the machine meets the minimum requirements listed above.
- Install the current GPU driver from NVIDIA or AMD and restart Windows.
- Verify that
DOOMx64.exeuses the primary or high-performance GPU. - Close unnecessary programs before testing, especially anything that consumes substantial CPU, GPU, memory, or disk activity.
These checks remove common configuration variables. They do not prove that an upgrade will fix the symptom; the requirements table is not a performance benchmark.
Lower the settings that directly reduce rendering work
- Launch DOOM and open Settings → Video.
- Lower the display resolution and test a repeatable area of the game.
- Change the anti-aliasing option and test again. Use the setting that gives a stable image and frame delivery on your system.
- Close background programs and repeat the same test so the comparison is meaningful.
Change one setting at a time. If lowering resolution helps immediately, the workload is likely GPU-limited at the previous setting; if it does not, continue with the driver, GPU-selection, and API checks rather than lowering everything blindly.
Test Vulkan as an alternative graphics API
Bethesda says that, in some cases, enabling the Vulkan API can improve GPU performance. That is a test, not a universal speed or compatibility promise. A driver, GPU, or operating-system combination can perform better with OpenGL, while another can benefit from Vulkan.

- Open Settings → Advanced Settings → Graphics API.
- Choose Vulkan, apply the change, and allow DOOM to restart.
- Repeat the same scene or workload used for the OpenGL baseline.
- If Vulkan causes a launch failure, rendering errors, or worse stutter, return to the setting and choose OpenGL. The game restarts whenever you switch APIs.
| API choice | Use it when | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| OpenGL | It is the stable baseline, or Vulkan will not launch or renders incorrectly. | Keep it if frame delivery is consistent on your supported driver and GPU. |
| Vulkan | Your GPU, operating system, and driver support it and you want to test whether performance improves. | Measure the same scene; revert to OpenGL if launch or rendering trouble appears. |
Understand the documented older Vulkan exceptions
Bethesda’s July 2016 FAQ records specific hardware and operating-system limitations. It says Vulkan is unsupported on the NVIDIA GTX 690 and on NVIDIA 2 GB GPUs running Windows 7, and it lists other known issues tied to particular GPUs or actions. Those notes are useful historical caveats for matching configurations, but they do not replace checking current driver support on modern hardware.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If your system matches one of those older combinations, begin with OpenGL and update the driver before drawing conclusions. If it does not, still treat Vulkan as an experiment: the FAQ does not establish that it is faster for every supported system.
Make performance comparisons repeatable
Use the same save location or gameplay area for every test. Record the resolution, anti-aliasing choice, graphics API, and whether background programs were closed. A setting that feels smoother in one scene but causes a crash or rendering problem elsewhere is not a reliable fix. Switching APIs always restarts the game, so allow the restart to finish before judging the result.
Compare stability before peak speed. If OpenGL delivers consistent frame pacing and Vulkan produces occasional hitches, OpenGL is the better choice even if a counter briefly reports a higher frame rate on Vulkan. Conversely, if Vulkan removes the hitching without introducing crashes or visual errors, keep Vulkan for that configuration.
When audio is missing, distorted, too fast, or high-pitched
Audio problems often come from a muted in-game level, the wrong Windows playback endpoint, or an incompatible default format. Check the software path before replacing a headset, adapter, or sound card.
1. Confirm DOOM’s own audio levels
- Open DOOM’s Settings menu.
- Choose Audio.
- Confirm that the relevant sound bars are audible; Bethesda’s guidance says to ensure the bars are set to 100%.
- If you are using headphones, test the speakers or another known-good output. If speakers work while headphones do not, the output path is the useful next suspect.
2. Select the intended Windows playback device
- Open Windows’ sound or playback-device controls.
- Enable the speakers or headphones you intend to use and select that device as the default playback device.
- Open the device’s properties and set its default format to 16-bit, 48,000 Hz.
- Use the Windows test control to confirm that the device produces sound.
- Leave the Playback tab open while starting DOOM and watch the device’s level meter. Movement indicates that the game is sending audio to that endpoint, even if the audible result is still wrong.
If the meter moves on a different device than the one you are wearing or listening to, return to the default-device selection rather than changing game volume repeatedly.
3. Isolate peripherals and background software
Disconnect unnecessary USB audio devices, controllers, adapters, and other peripherals temporarily. Close other programs, then launch DOOM with only the intended playback device connected. This removes competing endpoints and software that may capture or transform audio.

4. Update the sound driver and, if necessary, DirectX
Use Device Manager to update the driver for the affected audio device. Restart Windows and test again. Bethesda also lists DirectX reinstallation as a possible audio troubleshooting step when the basic device and format checks do not help.
5. Fix audio that is unusually fast or high-pitched
For fast or high-pitched playback, change the playback device’s default format rather than changing the game’s volume. Bethesda gives changing 24-bit, 48 kHz to 16-bit, 48 kHz as an example and suggests trying other frequencies if needed. After each change, start DOOM and listen for normal pitch and speed. Keep the first format that produces stable, correct playback.
Interpret the Windows level-meter test
If the meter moves for the intended device but you hear nothing, the game is reaching Windows and the remaining fault is at the device, connection, mute control, or format. If the meter never moves, DOOM is likely targeting another endpoint or an audio component is not initializing. Recheck the default device, reconnect only the intended output, and then retest. Testing speakers while headphones are disconnected can distinguish a game-wide problem from a headset-specific one.
Should you buy new hardware?
Do not treat the minimum requirement table as proof that a purchase is necessary. The official troubleshooting sequence starts with drivers, files, GPU assignment, settings, API selection, playback devices, and formats. Consider a GPU, memory, storage device, headset, adapter, or sound card only if the computer is below the published requirements or a component has been independently shown to be faulty. A purchase is not a guaranteed cure for a crash, stutter, or audio fault that has not been isolated.
A symptom-first decision table
| Observed symptom | First checks | Next controlled test |
|---|---|---|
| Closes before the menu or immediately after launch | Requirements, GPU driver, Steam file verification, primary GPU, DirectX, firewall or antivirus | Collect DxDiag and contact Bethesda Support if it persists |
| Low frame rate in normal play | Requirements, current driver, primary GPU, resolution, anti-aliasing, background programs | Compare Vulkan with OpenGL on the same scene |
| Intermittent hitching or uneven frames | Close unnecessary programs and confirm the correct GPU and driver | Lower resolution or anti-aliasing, then test the other graphics API |
| No sound or sound from the wrong place | DOOM Audio levels, enabled Windows playback device, default device, speaker/headphone test | Set 16-bit, 48,000 Hz and observe the Windows level meter |
| Fast, distorted, or high-pitched sound | Playback-device format and output selection | Try 16-bit, 48 kHz, then other available frequencies; update the audio driver |
Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder
- Changing several variables at once: If you update a driver, switch APIs, lower resolution, and change audio formats together, you cannot identify which change helped. Use a short test after each change.
- Assuming Vulkan is automatically faster: Bethesda’s wording is conditional. Keep the API that is stable and smooth on your supported configuration.
- Using historical driver numbers as current advice: The 2016 FAQ’s version references are obsolete. Obtain current drivers from the GPU manufacturer.
- Confusing Steam-client support with the game listing: The Windows 10-and-later client notice from January 1, 2024 is separate from DOOM’s historical Windows 7/8.1/10 requirement.
- Replacing hardware before isolating the fault: The official workflows start with software, files, drivers, and settings. Consider a purchase only after confirming that the computer is below the listed requirements or that a device has independently failed.
- Leaving broad security exceptions enabled: If a narrow Windows Defender exception is used for testing, remove it when it does not resolve the crash and keep normal protection enabled.
- Repeating a failed test without changing the variable: Running file verification several times or relaunching with the same API does not add information. Move to the next check once a step completes successfully.
- Judging performance from different scenes: Compare the same repeatable area at the same resolution and anti-aliasing setting so OpenGL and Vulkan results are meaningful.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Contact Bethesda Support when launch crashes continue after the requirements, driver, Steam verification, GPU assignment, DirectX, and security checks. Include the DxDiag report, Windows version, GPU model, whether the system has integrated and discrete graphics, and the exact point at which DOOM closes.
For performance issues, report whether OpenGL or Vulkan was active, the resolution and anti-aliasing setting, and whether the same test area improved after closing background programs. For audio issues, report the selected playback device, its default format, whether the Windows level meter moved, and whether speakers and headphones behaved differently. This information lets support distinguish a game launch problem from a rendering-path or output-device problem.

Is Vulkan always faster than OpenGL in DOOM?
No. Bethesda says Vulkan can improve GPU performance in some cases. Test both APIs on the same scene and keep the one that is stable and smooth for your GPU, operating system, and driver.
How do I switch between Vulkan and OpenGL?
Go to Settings → Advanced Settings → Graphics API, choose the other API, and let DOOM restart. Return to OpenGL if Vulkan prevents launch, causes rendering errors, or produces worse stutter.
Why does DOOM have no sound even though Windows works?
Check Settings → Audio and make sure the levels are audible, then enable and select the intended Windows playback device. Set its default format to 16-bit, 48,000 Hz, test it in Windows, and watch its level meter while DOOM starts.

Bethesda’s example is changing a device from 24-bit, 48 kHz to 16-bit, 48 kHz. If that does not help, test other available frequencies, restarting DOOM after each change.
Does meeting the minimum requirements guarantee smooth performance?
No. The Steam figures are minimum listing requirements, not a frame-rate guarantee. Drivers, GPU selection, resolution, anti-aliasing, background programs, and the chosen graphics API can still affect performance.
Are the old Vulkan driver numbers from 2016 still useful?
They are historical documentation, not current driver targets. Install the current driver supplied by your GPU manufacturer and use the old FAQ only to recognize its documented GTX 690 and NVIDIA 2 GB Windows 7 exceptions.
Should I buy a new graphics card or headset to fix the problem?
Not before isolating the fault. Use the software, file, driver, settings, API, playback-device, and format checks first. Consider hardware only when the PC is below the published requirements or a component has independently been diagnosed as defective.
The Bottom Line
Match the remedy to the symptom: verify requirements, drivers, Steam files, GPU assignment, DirectX, and security software for launch crashes; reduce resolution or anti-aliasing and compare Vulkan with OpenGL for stutter; and check DOOM’s levels, Windows’ playback device, and the 16-bit/48 kHz format for audio faults. Test one change at a time, keep the configuration that is stable on your system, and provide Bethesda Support with DxDiag details when local checks do not resolve the issue.
