If your browser shows “This site can’t be reached,” “Can’t find the server,” or ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED, it could not turn the website’s hostname into an IP address. First check the address, test another site, and determine whether the failure affects one device or the whole network. Then use the least disruptive fix that matches that scope: reconnect the network, complete a public Wi‑Fi sign-in, check browser and security software, flush the Windows DNS client cache when appropriate, and test another resolver only if necessary. A local cache flush cannot repair missing DNS records or an upstream resolver that still has a negative answer.
What a DNS error means
DNS (Domain Name System) resolution is the lookup that maps a hostname such as example.com to the IP address a browser needs to connect. A DNS error occurs before the browser can request the page: the hostname lookup failed, timed out, was blocked, or returned an unusable answer.
Google Chrome defines ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED this way: “The hostname (web address) doesn’t exist or now has a different IP address.” That message does not prove that your computer’s local cache is at fault. The domain could be misspelled, its authoritative records could be missing or wrong, or a router, ISP, or other recursive resolver could be returning a stale or negative result.
| What you see | What it tells you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED |
Chrome could not resolve the hostname to an address. | It does not identify whether the cause is the URL, local cache, upstream resolver, network, or the site’s DNS records. |
| “This site can’t be reached” or “Can’t find the server” | The page did not load; DNS may be one of several possible layers involved. | It is not interchangeable with every other connection error. |
| Timeout, reset, or internet-disconnected errors | Chrome distinguishes these from name-resolution failures and they can involve connectivity or transport problems. | Flushing DNS is not a universal remedy for them. |
Chrome’s general loading guidance also lists the URL, internet connection, network equipment, browser, security software, and website downtime as possible causes. Treat the error text as a clue, then isolate the failing layer instead of applying every fix at once.

Identify the scope before changing anything
Two quick comparisons usually tell you where to start. They are isolation tests, not proof of a single root cause.
| Test result | Most useful starting point |
|---|---|
| Only one domain fails, while other sites open | Recheck the domain and subdomain spelling; consider a stale or negative DNS answer or a problem with that domain’s records. |
| Many domains fail on one device | Check that device’s connection, browser, security software, and local resolver behavior. |
| Many domains fail on every device on one Wi‑Fi or wired network | Inspect the modem/router and shared network or resolver; contact the network administrator or ISP if the problem persists. |
| The site fails on several devices and different networks | The domain owner or DNS host may need to correct its records, or the service may be unavailable. |
| It fails on one device but works on another device using the same network | Continue with device-specific cache, browser, and security checks. |
Follow this troubleshooting sequence
1. Verify the web address and reload once
- Read the address in the address bar character by character. Check the spelling, top-level domain, and any subdomain such as
wwworshop. - Remove accidental spaces or punctuation and try the corrected address.
- Reload the page once. If you opened the link from an old bookmark, type the domain manually rather than assuming the bookmark is current.
- Open a second, well-known site. If it loads, the internet connection is at least working for that test and the problem may be limited to the first domain.
A domain can stop resolving because its records were changed, removed, or configured incorrectly. A correct spelling does not guarantee that the owner’s DNS is healthy.
2. Compare another device and another network
- On the same Wi‑Fi or Ethernet network, try the site on another device.
- On the affected device, switch to a different connection, such as a phone hotspot, if that is permitted and available.
- Record which combination works: same device/different network, or different device/same network.
If every device on one network fails, focus on shared equipment or the network’s resolver. If only one device fails, keep the investigation local. If the domain fails across unrelated networks, visitor-side changes are unlikely to repair the site’s DNS records; the site operator or DNS provider needs to investigate.

3. Check the connection, equipment, and browser
These checks cover ordinary loading failures as well as DNS symptoms. Do them when several sites fail or when the browser reports more than a name-resolution problem.

- Confirm that Wi‑Fi or Ethernet shows as connected and that airplane mode is off.
- If multiple devices are affected, inspect the modem and router. Reconnect or restart existing equipment when appropriate, allowing it to finish booting before testing again.
- On hotel, airport, library, or other public Wi‑Fi, open a new browser tab and complete the network’s sign-in or acceptance page. DNS and web access can remain restricted until that portal is completed.
- Update and restart the browser. Test the page in an Incognito window to separate a normal-profile problem from the network path.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions one at a time, then retest. Restore any extension you do not need to disable.
- Check whether firewall or antivirus software is blocking the browser or DNS traffic. Use the product’s documented exception or diagnostic mode rather than leaving protection disabled.
- Clear browser data only when broader loading problems continue. Browser-data clearing is a general page-loading check, not a guaranteed DNS repair.
If the second known-working site also fails after these checks, do not keep repeating a DNS flush; investigate the connection or shared network instead.
4. Flush the Windows DNS client cache when one Windows device is affected
Microsoft documents ipconfig /flushdns for a Windows DNS client that has a cached negative response. A negative response means the client cached that a name could not be found. Run the command on the affected Windows computer, then retry the site.
- Open Command Prompt on the affected Windows device.
- Enter
ipconfig /flushdnsand press Enter. - Close and reopen the browser tab, then test the original address and a second site.
This is a client command. It does not clear the DNS cache in your router, ISP, workplace resolver, or any other upstream recursive resolver. Cloudflare’s DNS guidance specifically notes that an upstream resolver can continue holding a negative result after the local cache has been flushed. If the same name still fails, move to the scope and resolver tests rather than running the command repeatedly.

5. Test resolver behavior only when the simpler checks point there
A different DNS resolver can be a useful diagnostic comparison. Google’s Public DNS setup and troubleshooting documentation advises recording the current DNS addresses and settings before changing them because the procedure differs by operating system and device.
- Write down or photograph the existing DNS addresses and any other network settings.
- Check whether DNS queries are reaching the configured resolver and whether replies time out. A timeout, blockage, or apparent hijacking is evidence about the network path, not proof that a public resolver will permanently fix it.
- If you are authorized to do so, temporarily configure a documented public resolver using the instructions for your exact device and operating-system version.
- Retry the failing domain and at least one known-working domain.
- Restore the original DNS settings if the test makes no difference, causes other problems, or is not allowed on the network.
Changing DNS is not a guaranteed repair. It can bypass a faulty resolver or reveal that the current resolver is unreachable, but it cannot create missing authoritative records. On a work or school network, contact the administrator instead of bypassing policy or security controls.
Understand local and upstream DNS caches
DNS lookups can be cached at several layers: the browser or operating system, the home router, the ISP’s recursive resolver, and other shared resolvers. Flushing the Windows client affects only that computer. It does not instruct an upstream resolver to forget its answer.
This explains a common pattern: a site works on a phone using mobile data but not on home Wi‑Fi, or works on one resolver but not another. The tests show where the answers differ; they do not by themselves prove why. A stale negative answer, blocked DNS traffic, and incorrect records at the domain are separate possibilities.

What to do for each result
Only one site fails everywhere
Check the spelling and the exact subdomain first. If the address is correct and the failure occurs on several devices and networks, the owner or DNS host should verify the domain’s required records and authoritative DNS service. Give the operator the exact hostname, error text, time of the test, and the networks on which it failed.
Many sites fail on one device
Confirm the device is connected, test another browser profile or Incognito mode, and check extensions, firewall, and antivirus interference. On Windows, flush the DNS client cache once when a cached negative response is plausible. If only that device remains affected, its network settings or local security software need attention.
Many sites fail on every device on one network
Check the modem/router and whether a captive-portal sign-in is pending. If DNS queries to a documented public resolver time out or appear blocked, contact the ISP or network administrator. Keep the original DNS settings recorded so any temporary diagnostic change can be undone.
The browser shows a different connection error
Do not assume DNS is the cause. Chrome distinguishes name-resolution errors from internet-disconnected, timeout, and reset messages. Follow the corresponding connection, browser, or security-software checks instead of repeatedly flushing DNS.

Common mistakes and safer alternatives
- Flushing every device immediately: Start by identifying the scope. A local flush cannot repair a domain’s missing records or an upstream cache.
- Treating all DNS-looking codes as identical:
ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVEDhas a specific meaning. Other messages can involve different layers. - Changing DNS without recording the old values: Save the current addresses first and restore them after the test if needed.
- Leaving antivirus, firewall, or browser extensions disabled: Use a short diagnostic test, then re-enable protection and apply a supported exception.
- Bypassing a managed network: Work and school administrators may enforce approved resolvers or filtering. Ask them to test the network rather than overriding policy.
- Assuming a working alternate network proves the website is healthy: It shows that the original path and the alternate path differ; the domain may still have an intermittent or regional DNS problem.
- Repeating browser-data clearing for a network-wide failure: Browser cleanup affects the profile, not the router or ISP resolver.
When to escalate and what information to provide
Escalate to the right party based on the pattern you observed:
- Website owner or DNS host: one domain fails on multiple devices and unrelated networks, or the domain’s required records appear absent or incorrect.
- ISP or home-network administrator: many domains fail for devices on one connection, especially when resolver queries time out or appear blocked.
- Work or school IT: the affected device or network is managed, or policy prevents changing resolver settings.
- Device support: only one computer continues failing after connection, browser, security, and cache checks.
Include the exact hostname (including subdomain), the browser’s complete error code, the date and time, whether other sites loaded, which devices were tested, and whether a different network changed the result. This prevents the recipient from repeating basic isolation steps and helps distinguish a local symptom from an authoritative DNS problem.
A compact decision checklist
- Check the URL spelling and reload once.
- Open a second known-working site.
- Test the same site on another device using the same network.
- Test the affected device on another network when possible.
- Confirm Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, inspect existing modem/router equipment, and complete any captive-portal sign-in.
- Try Incognito mode, update/restart the browser, and check extensions and security software if general loading is failing.
- On an affected Windows client, run
ipconfig /flushdnsonce when a cached negative answer is plausible. - If needed, record current DNS settings before performing a temporary resolver test.
- Escalate to the site operator, ISP, network administrator, or device support according to the observed pattern.
