Start with the affected device in Device Manager, not with a generic driver-updater program. Note the device name, look for a yellow exclamation point, and open its status or error code. If the failure began immediately after a driver change and Roll Back Driver is available, restore the previous driver first. If rollback is unavailable, use Windows Update or Device Manager to update or reinstall the device, then obtain a compatible package from the hardware maker’s official support site if Windows cannot find one.
That sequence applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 general driver guidance, but edition and support status matter. Microsoft’s audio guidance notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so an audio fix described here should not be read as a promise of ongoing support for every Windows 10 installation or device.
First, identify what actually failed
“A driver stopped working” describes a symptom, not a diagnosis. A successful Windows update can coincide with a driver change, a device service failing to start, or an unrelated hardware problem. Conversely, Windows may fail to install an update because an incompatible driver blocked the installation. Treat those as different cases.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Name the device. Decide whether the failure affects audio, graphics or display, network, printer, keyboard, mouse, storage, or another device.
- Record the timing. Write down when the device stopped working, whether Windows Update reported success, and whether a driver was updated separately.
- Open Device Manager. Search for “Device Manager” from Start, expand the relevant category, and locate the affected device.
- Inspect status. Right-click the device, choose Properties, and read the message on the General tab. A yellow exclamation point is a common visible sign of a device problem, particularly in graphics troubleshooting.
- Capture the code and wording. An exact Device Manager code narrows the remedy far better than a message that the driver “stopped working.” Use Microsoft’s code-specific Device Manager guidance when the number does not match the cases below.
Do not uninstall a broad collection of drivers while investigating. Work on the named device only, and record its model and current driver provider and date before changing anything.

Choose the remedy from the evidence
| Evidence | Best next action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Failure began after a recent driver update; Roll Back Driver is enabled | Roll back, then restart | The previous package is the most direct test of whether the recent change caused the failure. |
| Rollback is missing or disabled | Search for an updated driver, or uninstall and reinstall the named device | Windows may have no earlier driver version stored. |
| Windows cannot find a compatible driver | Download the package from the device or PC maker’s official support page | Compatibility depends on the exact model and Windows version and architecture. |
| Graphics device shows code 43 | Update, roll back, or reinstall the graphics driver | Code 43 means the graphics driver notified Windows that the device is not working properly. |
| Sound disappeared after an update | Check the audio driver and Windows audio services | Microsoft lists an incompatible audio driver and services that failed to start as possible causes. |
| Windows Update itself failed with 0xC1900101 | Troubleshoot the incompatible driver blocking installation | This is an update-installation failure, not proof that a successfully installed update broke a device. |
Try Roll Back Driver when the timing fits
Rollback is appropriate when the device worked until a recent driver update. It restores the previous driver rather than asking Windows to find a different one.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the device and right-click it.
- Choose Properties, then open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver.
- Choose a reason when Windows asks, confirm, and restart if prompted.
You need administrator rights. Microsoft states that reinstalling the previous driver often resolves an issue that began after a Windows Update. The rollback control can be absent or disabled when Windows has no previous version to restore; that does not mean the device is beyond repair. Move to updating or reinstalling instead.
Update the device through Windows
Windows Update is Microsoft’s normal route for recommended hardware-driver updates. Device Manager can also search for a driver.

- In Device Manager, right-click the affected device and choose Update driver.
- Select the option to search automatically for drivers.
- Allow the search to finish, install a compatible result if one is offered, and restart Windows if requested.
- Test the original function again and recheck the device’s status in Device Manager.
An automatic search may report that the best driver is already installed even when the device still fails. That result only means Windows did not find a newer compatible package through that search; it does not establish that the current driver is healthy.
Uninstall and reinstall one affected driver
Reinstallation is the next built-in step when rollback does not apply or an existing installation appears damaged.
- Save your work and close applications that use the device.
- In Device Manager, right-click only the affected device and choose Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal. Do not select unrelated devices simply to “clean up” drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- After restart, check Device Manager. Microsoft says Windows attempts to reinstall the driver automatically; printers and some other devices may require manual installation instead.
If the device returns with the same error, note the exact code and proceed to the manufacturer’s package rather than repeating uninstall cycles.

Install a manufacturer driver safely
When Windows cannot supply a compatible package, use the official support page for the computer or device manufacturer. Microsoft explicitly warns: “Avoid downloading drivers from any websites other than the manufacturer’s official site.” Generic driver-download sites and universal “driver updater” utilities can provide the wrong model, an incompatible Windows build, or unwanted software.
- Identify the exact device model. For a built-in component, the PC manufacturer’s model and service identifier may be required; for an add-in device, use the model printed on the hardware or its documentation.
- Confirm the Windows release installed on the computer and the system architecture shown in Windows settings.
- Download the driver package listed for that exact model and Windows combination.
- Read the manufacturer’s installation instructions, run the package, and restart if requested.
- Return to Device Manager and verify that the error message has cleared before testing the device in its application.
If the maker offers several packages, do not assume that the newest date is automatically correct. Choose the package whose model, Windows version, and architecture match your system. If no matching package exists, contact that manufacturer rather than substituting a package for a different device.
Route common symptoms to the right fix
Graphics hardware reports code 43
Code 43 is a Device Manager status for graphics hardware. Microsoft explains that it means the graphics device driver notified Windows that the device is not working properly. Open the device’s Properties page to confirm the code, then use the documented sequence: update the driver, roll it back if a recent change preceded the failure, or uninstall and reinstall it. A yellow exclamation point beside the graphics device is another reason to inspect its status rather than guessing.

The screen flickers
Open Task Manager and watch whether it flickers along with the rest of the display. If Task Manager flickers too, Microsoft’s screen-flickering guidance points toward a display-driver issue; if Task Manager remains steady while another app flickers, the problem may be confined to that app. When the flicker started after a Windows or driver update, use the rollback procedure above if the control is available and you have administrator rights.
Audio stopped after an update
For “audio stops working after a Windows update,” first inspect the audio device in Device Manager and read its status. Microsoft lists an incompatible audio driver and Windows audio services that failed to start as possible causes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Try Roll Back Driver on the audio device if the timing fits and the button is available.
- Otherwise update the audio driver through Windows, or uninstall the audio device and restart so Windows can attempt reinstallation.
- If the driver appears present but sound remains unavailable, open the Windows Services app and check Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder. Restart each service, then test playback again.
- If Windows still cannot find a compatible package, install the exact audio driver from the computer or audio-device maker’s official support page.
The audio guidance’s Windows 10 support notice is important: support ended October 14, 2025. Check the support status of your edition and hardware before assuming every listed step or future update will remain available.

When Windows Update failed with 0xC1900101
Error 0xC1900101 is associated with an incompatible driver causing a Windows update to fail. The computer may still be running the previous Windows version; that is not the same situation as a device breaking after an update completed successfully.
- Read the Windows Update failure message and note the device or driver named, if any.
- Check Device Manager for warning icons, especially on network and graphics devices, which Microsoft highlights in its update troubleshooting guidance.
- Update, roll back, or reinstall the identified driver using the procedures above.
- Restart and run Windows Update again.
- If the installation still fails, return to the exact error and device information instead of treating the problem as a generic post-update driver failure.
Use error codes instead of a one-size-fits-all fix
Device Manager has multiple codes, and their recommended actions differ. Code 43 is specifically associated with a graphics device reporting a problem; 0xC1900101 identifies an incompatible driver blocking an update. For any other code, consult Microsoft’s “Error codes in Device Manager in Windows” table and follow the recommendation for that code. Do not infer that every yellow icon means Windows replaced the driver, or that every device error can be fixed by installing the newest package.
Checks after the driver change
- Restart when the installer or Windows requests it; some driver changes do not take effect until restart.
- Reopen Device Manager and confirm the device has no warning icon and that its status says it is working properly.
- Test the real function: play audio, open a display workload, connect to the network, print a test page, or use the input device.
- Record the driver version and date that worked. That record makes a later rollback or manufacturer-support call faster.
- If the same error returns immediately, stop changing unrelated drivers and provide the exact code, model, Windows release, and installation history to the manufacturer or Microsoft support channel.
What not to do
- Do not treat the date of a Windows update as proof that Windows replaced the failing driver.
- Do not download a driver from an unofficial mirror or a generic driver-download website.
- Do not install a package merely because its name resembles your device; model, Windows version, and architecture must match.
- Do not uninstall a broad set of drivers when only one device is failing.
- Do not confuse a failed update installation (0xC1900101) with a device that failed after a successful update.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Escalate to the device maker when no official package matches the model, when installation repeatedly fails, or when the device continues to report the same code after a correctly matched reinstall. Provide the model, Windows version and architecture, Device Manager code, the date and type of update, and the steps already attempted. That evidence is more useful than describing the issue only as “drivers stopped working.”
