If Destiny 2 crashes, freezes, closes during launch, or shows an error code on a Windows PC, start with reversible checks: restart the game, update Windows and your graphics driver, close unnecessary background software, and check Bungie’s service and known-issues pages. Then use the exact error code and launcher to choose a focused repair rather than reinstalling blindly.
The steps below separate damaged files, graphics-driver problems, performance drops, configuration corruption, platform errors, and network disconnects. That distinction matters because a fix for one category will not necessarily resolve another.
Identify exactly what is failing
Before changing files or settings, record the failure in a few words. Note whether Destiny 2 reaches the title screen, freezes on a black screen, closes while loading a character, or disconnects after entering an activity. Copy the complete error code, including its spelling. Also record your launcher (Steam, Epic Games Store, or Microsoft Store), when the problem began, whether it followed an update or graphics-settings change, and whether it happens every time or only occasionally.

Run the low-risk checks first
- Restart Destiny 2 completely. Exit to the desktop, close the launcher if it is still processing the game, wait a few seconds, and start the game again. Bungie specifically recommends restarting for one-off disconnects.
- Install Windows updates. Use Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver offered for your GPU from its manufacturer, then reboot. Driver checks are part of Bungie’s Steam and CHIVE troubleshooting.
- Close unnecessary background programs. Shut down overlays, recording tools, browser windows, hardware-monitoring utilities, and other applications you do not need for the test. This is especially important for RUTABAGA, which Bungie associates with performance falling below sustainable thresholds.
- Check Bungie’s service and known-issues information. A service incident or a newly acknowledged game issue can look like a local crash. Bungie says its Destiny 2 Known Issues and Vital Information list is targeted, not complete, so an absent entry does not prove that your system is at fault.
Test the game after each meaningful change. If the problem disappears, you know which category to investigate if it returns; changing many variables at once makes that diagnosis harder.
Use the error code or symptom to choose the right fix

Fix MARMOT and other damaged-file symptoms
Bungie defines MARMOT as corrupted game files. File verification compares the installed content with the launcher’s expected files and replaces items that fail the check. It is reversible with respect to your personal settings and is a narrower intervention than uninstalling the entire game.
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Destiny 2 and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files. Older Bungie instructions call this area Local Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Launch Destiny 2 again and check whether the same code or crash returns.
If verification reports files and the error persists, Bungie lists reinstalling as the next MARMOT escalation. For a persistent Steam-specific problem, its MARMOT guidance also lists checking the drive for errors. Do not start with a reinstall when a verification pass can answer the damaged-file question more safely.

- Open the Epic Games Launcher and go to Library.
- Use the three-dot menu beside Destiny 2 and choose Manage.
- Select Verify, allow the process to complete, and relaunch the game.
If the launcher reports that files are healthy but the same MARMOT code remains, follow Bungie’s Error Code: MARMOT escalation guidance rather than repeatedly running the same check.
Handle CHIVE graphics-driver failures
For CHIVE, Bungie recommends checking the graphics driver and using the platform’s scan-and-repair function; it also says reports are under investigation. Treat these as targeted troubleshooting steps, not a guaranteed cure for every crash.
- Install the current driver for your GPU and restart Windows.
- Try Destiny 2 with conservative graphics settings if the crash began after a settings change.
- Run Steam’s file verification or Epic’s Manage > Verify scan.
- If updating did not help, reinstall the graphics driver using the driver installer’s clean or reinstall option, then reboot.
Use the exact instructions on Bungie’s Error Code: CHIVE page if the code continues. Avoid assuming that a driver reinstall fixes a network disconnect or a launcher-generated error.

Reduce RUTABAGA performance failures
Bungie associates RUTABAGA with performance dropping below sustainable thresholds. The practical goal is to remove competing workloads and confirm that the computer is operating with current software and adequate hardware support.
- Close other applications before launching Destiny 2, including overlays and capture software.
- Restart the game after closing those applications.
- Install current Windows updates and confirm that the graphics processor’s firmware or driver package is current.
- Compare the computer with Destiny 2’s published PC requirements. If the system cannot sustain the game’s workload, lowering settings may help, but it does not change the underlying capability.
Persistent RUTABAGA errors should be reported with the code, launcher, GPU model, operating-system version, and the activity or screen where the failure occurs. Bungie’s detailed recommendations are on Error Code: RUTABAGA.
Reset a damaged configuration file
If the crash began after changing graphics or other in-game options, a corrupted configuration can prevent a normal launch even when the installed game files are intact. Bungie recommends deleting CVARS.xml so Destiny 2 can create a fresh copy.
- Close Destiny 2 and the launcher.
- In File Explorer, navigate to
UsersUSER_NAMEAppdataRoamingBungieDestinyPCprefs. ReplaceUSER_NAMEwith your Windows account folder. - Delete
CVARS.xml. - Start Destiny 2. The game generates a new file with default settings.
This action resets custom settings. Expect to configure graphics, display, input, and other preferences again. It does not repair corrupted installation content, so use file verification for a MARMOT diagnosis. Bungie documents the file-reset procedure in its Destiny 2 Steam Guide.
Clear launcher cache only when the symptom fits
Clearing Steam’s download cache can help with certain download, installation, or launcher-state problems. Bungie mentions it for general Steam issues, Windows Defender false-positive situations, and TERMITE cases. It is not a universal crash fix and should not replace graphics-driver checks or file verification when those match your symptom.

In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads, choose Clear Download Cache, sign in again if prompted, and retry the affected download or launch. If Windows Defender has quarantined or blocked a Destiny file, consult Bungie’s Windows Defender and Destiny 2 on PC guidance. Do not disable security protections indiscriminately.

For TERMITE, use Bungie’s code-specific instructions at Error Code: TERMITE. Cache clearing addresses launcher download state; it does not prove that the game executable, driver, or network is healthy.
Compare the main repairs before choosing one
These actions solve different classes of problem, so choosing the least invasive matching step saves time and avoids unnecessary downloads.

For example, running verification repeatedly will not restore a broken CVARS file, while deleting CVARS will not replace a damaged game archive. Likewise, a wired-connection test can isolate packet loss but cannot repair CHIVE driver problems. Match the intervention to when the failure occurs: before the title screen usually points toward launch, file, driver, or configuration checks; a disconnect inside an activity points toward connectivity guidance.
Separate network disconnects from game crashes
A disconnect after the title screen is a different problem from a process that closes on launch. Repeated or changing disconnect codes can indicate network instability rather than one bad game file. Bungie’s disconnection guidance explains why the exact code matters.
TURTLE symptoms
- Restart Destiny 2 and retest.
- Use an Ethernet connection if practical; it removes Wi-Fi variability from the test.
- Check for packet loss or unstable latency on your connection.
- Clear the relevant platform’s download or web cache when Bungie’s instructions call for it.
For the code-specific procedure, see Error Code: TURTLE. If several different disconnect codes appear over time, document their order and timing instead of repeatedly reinstalling the game.
Understand current, hardware-specific known issues
Bungie’s known-issues page includes targeted notices that can change. The version reviewed lists crashes in high-demand environments on laptops using 12th-generation Intel Iris integrated graphics and suggests selecting the discrete GPU for Destiny 2 in Windows Graphics Settings when one is available. The path is Settings > System > Display > Graphics; add or select Destiny 2, choose Options, select High performance, and save.

The same page reports an investigation into Steam frame hitches and performance drops since Update 9.7.0.2. That notice is not evidence that every Steam crash has the same cause. The page contains entries dated July 7, 2026, and June 9, 2026; check the live page for changed wording, dates, or additional affected hardware before relying on a time-sensitive entry.

Reinstalling is an escalation, not the first response to an unexplained freeze. It becomes reasonable when a code-specific verification or scan-and-repair pass fails, the launcher repeatedly reports missing or corrupted content, or Bungie’s code page explicitly lists it as the next step. Record your settings and account details first, because reinstalling removes the local game installation and can require a large download.
Do not use registry edits, random file deletions, security-software deactivation, or hardware replacement as generic crash remedies. The official guidance here does not establish those actions as general fixes, and they can create new problems.

Bungie states that Destiny 2 is unsupported on SteamOS and Proton. If the game will not launch in that environment, switching settings or applying an unofficial compatibility workaround is not a supported crash fix. Bungie directs players to Windows for supported play and warns that attempts to bypass the incompatibility can result in a game ban. Treat this as a platform requirement, not as a damaged-file diagnosis.
Escalate with useful evidence
If the exact code remains after its listed steps, open that code’s Bungie Help page and use the appropriate support forum. Include the complete code, launcher, Windows version, GPU model and driver version, when the problem began, whether it is reproducible, and every step already attempted. Mention whether the game reaches the title screen and whether other applications or games show similar failures.
