To fix Dead by Daylight connection errors, lag, or high ping, first determine whether an online-service outage is affecting your platform. If services are operating normally, test your local connection: use Ethernet instead of Wi‑Fi where possible, close competing applications, restart the modem and router correctly, update the game and platform, and verify that Windows Firewall is allowing the game. Matchmaking problems may also involve NAT restrictions. Error Code 107 and an RTM error have additional checks. None of these steps guarantees a lower ping, and the official guidance does not define a universal “high ping” number.
What a Dead by Daylight connection problem can mean
A failed match, rubber-banding, disconnect, or conspicuously slow response does not automatically mean your PC or console is faulty. The cause can be a platform online-service incident, a home-network problem, a firewall or proxy, restrictive NAT, an ISP routing issue, or a temporary game-side condition.

Behaviour Interactive’s support pages do not publish a ping cutoff that defines “high,” a success rate for any fix, or a guaranteed cure for lag. Treat ping as a symptom to investigate, not as proof of one particular fault.

How to fix Dead by Daylight connection errors: the correct order
Work from checks that are quick and reversible to changes that depend on your platform or router. This order prevents you from changing NAT or firewall settings when a platform outage is the actual cause.

1. Check the online-service status for your platform
When Error Code 107 appears, Behaviour specifically advises checking the online-service status for the platform you use. Use the platform’s own live status page for:
- Steam
- Epic Games Services, including Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC)
- Xbox and Microsoft services
- PlayStation services
- Nintendo services
- GeForce NOW
These pages describe platform service conditions. They are not direct confirmation that every Dead by Daylight match server is healthy. Status information can change quickly, so do not assume that a clear platform page rules out every game-side issue or that a warning proves your particular match failed for that reason.
If the platform reports an incident, wait for the service to recover before making advanced router changes. If the status is normal, continue with the local tests below.

2. Test the connection without changing advanced settings
Start with the physical link and the applications using it:
- Switch from Wi‑Fi to Ethernet for a test. Connect the PC or console to the router with an Ethernet cable if the device and room layout permit it. Behaviour’s Network Troubleshooting article, published January 21, 2022, states: “If you are using a wireless connection, try using a wired connection as this is typically more stable.” This is a diagnostic comparison, not a promise that a cable will lower ping or repair a service outage.
- If wiring is impractical, move the router closer. Use the same game and location after moving it, so you can tell whether the wireless path changed the symptoms.
- Close other applications. Quit downloads, streaming, cloud synchronization, browsers with active media, and other games before launching Dead by Daylight. Behaviour lists closing other applications among its basic checks.
- Run a speed test. Record the result rather than relying on the package name from your ISP. A speed result cannot by itself identify packet loss or a poor route, and higher bandwidth alone is not guaranteed to cure high ping.
- Ask your ISP to verify the subscribed rates. If the measured upload or download performance is substantially below what you normally receive, ask the ISP to check the line and the expected speeds.
An Ethernet cable is optional: use one you already have or obtain a generic cable only if it makes this comparison practical. It is not a universal fix.

3. Update the software on every relevant device
Before diagnosing the router, install pending updates for:
- Windows, if you play on PC
- Dead by Daylight
- Your graphics and network drivers on Windows
- The operating system and system software on your console
- The platform client or console online services
Restart the computer or console after updates that request it. A mismatch between an old client, driver, or platform component and the current service can look like a network failure.
4. Restart the modem and router in the prescribed order
Use this sequence from Behaviour’s network guide rather than repeatedly pressing the router’s reset button:
- Shut down the PCs, consoles, and other connected devices.
- Unplug the modem and router from power.
- Wait at least 15 seconds.
- Plug the modem back in first.
- Wait one to two minutes for the modem to reconnect.
- Power the router back on and wait for its connection indicators to settle.
- Start the gaming device and test Dead by Daylight again.
This is a power cycle, not a factory reset. Do not hold a pin in a reset opening unless you intentionally want to erase the router’s configuration.
5. Refresh the network lease and DNS on Windows
The Windows-only command-line part of Behaviour’s guidance releases and renews the IP address, flushes DNS, and then restarts the computer. Open Command Prompt and run these commands one at a time:

ipconfig /flushdnsClose the window when the commands finish and restart Windows. These commands do not alter your ISP plan or router NAT policy; they refresh local network information. If a command reports an error, note it and continue with the graphical checks or ask your network administrator for help instead of repeatedly running it.

Allow the game through Windows Firewall
Windows Firewall can block the game even when general web browsing works. Behaviour’s Error Code 107 instructions direct Windows players to add Dead by Daylight as an allowed app:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Firewall & network protection.
- Choose Allow an app through firewall.
- Select Change settings and authenticate if Windows asks.
- Find Dead by Daylight in the list and allow it on the network profiles you actually use.
- If it is absent, use Allow another app, browse to the game executable installed by your platform, and add it.
- Save the change, restart the game, and test matchmaking.
Do not solve the problem by turning the firewall off entirely. An allowed-app exception limits the change to the game and preserves the firewall for other traffic. If you use a third-party security suite, check its application-control list as well.
Check for a proxy or managed-network restriction
Behaviour’s general network guidance notes that a proxy can interfere with the connection and that a firewall on a shared network can block the game. On a personal Windows connection, review Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and disable a proxy you do not intentionally use, then restart the game.
University, workplace, hotel, and other managed networks may enforce firewall or traffic rules that you cannot change. Do not bypass those controls without authorization. Ask the network administrator whether game traffic is blocked, or test on a permitted home or mobile connection to separate the managed network from the game installation.

Understand NAT before changing router settings
Network Address Translation (NAT) affects which other consoles and PCs your platform can contact. Behaviour’s NAT FAQ describes these common labels:

Labels are platform-specific: a console may show a type number while a PC or router uses a different wording. Behaviour links separate instructions for Xbox, PlayStation, PC on Steam, Epic, and Switch. Use the instructions for your exact platform and current router firmware; the NAT FAQ was published April 23, 2021, so menu names may have changed.
NAT is primarily relevant when you cannot join matches or connect to particular players. Changing it is not a guaranteed latency fix, and opening ports or enabling automatic port mapping can affect your network’s security. Try the basic tests, updates, and firewall check first. If you need to change router settings, record the original values so you can undo the change and consult the router and platform documentation.
Error Code 107: what it means and what to do
Behaviour’s Error Code 107 article, published September 25, 2025, describes the code as following a network disconnection and reconnection. The cause may be the home connection or router, or an online-service outage affecting the platform.
- Check the official status page for your platform (Steam, Epic Games Services/EAC, Xbox/Microsoft, PlayStation, Nintendo, or GeForce NOW).
- If the status is normal, complete the wired-versus-Wi‑Fi test, close other applications, run a speed test, and ask your ISP to verify expected upload and download rates.
- Update Windows or the console, the game, drivers where applicable, and the platform software.
- Power-cycle the modem and router in the 15-second, modem-first sequence described above.
- On Windows, run the IP-release, IP-renew, and DNS-flush commands, then restart the computer.
- Use Windows Firewall’s Allow an app through firewall procedure to permit the game; do not disable the firewall completely.
- If the problem is limited to joining or matchmaking, inspect NAT after the basic checks.
If the code continues on a stable wired connection while the platform reports normal service, preserve the time of each failure and escalate with those details to your ISP or Behaviour support.

RTM error: verify the clock and NAT
For an RTM error, Behaviour’s March 4, 2022 support article calls out two checks that are easy to miss:
- System date and time: Turn on automatic date, time, and time-zone settings, synchronize the clock, and restart the game. An incorrect clock can interfere with service authentication.
- Platform-appropriate NAT: Behaviour recommends Open/Type 1 NAT for Xbox and PlayStation, and Type A or Type B for Nintendo Switch. The exact screens differ by platform and router, so verify the current menu names before changing anything.
If the clock is correct and the NAT checks do not resolve the RTM error, contact Behaviour support. Include your platform, the exact error text, when it began, whether another network changed the result, and the troubleshooting steps already completed.
Diagnosing Dead by Daylight lag and high ping
Separate wireless instability from an ISP route
Run the same match or connection test first on Wi‑Fi and then on Ethernet when possible. If the wired test is consistently better, wireless interference or signal quality is a likely contributor. If both behave the same, the issue may be upstream of your home Wi‑Fi, including the modem, ISP route, or a service condition.

A fast speed-test result can coexist with intermittent packet loss, queueing, or an inefficient route to a game service. Conversely, a temporary platform incident can produce errors even on a healthy home connection.
Use repeatable observations instead of a single number
Record the platform, connection type (Wi‑Fi or Ethernet), approximate time, whether other devices were busy, the exact error or in-match symptom, and whether restarting changed it. Repeating the comparison at different times helps an ISP or support team distinguish a persistent local fault from an intermittent service or routing event.
Because Behaviour does not publish a universal high-ping threshold in the cited guidance, avoid treating an arbitrary millisecond value as an official cutoff. Judge the result by the actual symptoms—delayed actions, rubber-banding, failed joins, or disconnections—and by whether the wired and alternative-network tests differ.
When to contact your ISP, network administrator, or Behaviour support
- Contact the ISP when measured upload or download performance is below the expected service, the modem repeatedly loses connection, or the same problem appears in other online games and services.
- Contact a network administrator on university, corporate, hotel, or other managed networks when a firewall, proxy, or traffic policy may block the game.
- Contact Behaviour support when Error Code 107 or an RTM error persists after the relevant official checks, or when the problem occurs across a known-good connection while platform services are operating normally.
Prepare a concise case:
- Platform and operating-system version
- Game version and the exact error wording
- Date and approximate times of failures, including your time zone
- Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, and whether a second network was tested
- Platform status result at the time
- Router restart, updates, firewall, proxy, NAT, and clock checks already performed
- Speed-test results and any ISP ticket number
This information prevents support from sending you through the same basic steps without knowing what has already been ruled out.

A compact decision checklist
- Service check: Is your platform reporting an incident? If yes, wait for recovery; if no, continue.
- Link check: Does Ethernet behave better than Wi‑Fi? If yes, investigate the wireless path; if no, continue.
- Load check: Did closing other applications change the result? If yes, manage competing traffic; if no, continue.
- Software check: Are Windows or console software, the game, drivers, and platform current? Update and restart.
- Router check: Did the modem-first power cycle resolve it? If not, continue.
- Windows security check: Is the game allowed through Windows Firewall and is an unintended proxy disabled?
- NAT check: Is matchmaking or joining specifically failing, and does the platform report a restricted NAT?
- Error branch: For 107, repeat the platform and firewall checks; for RTM, verify the clock and platform-specific NAT.
- Escalation: Give the ISP, network administrator, or Behaviour support your recorded results instead of guessing at a new router setting.
What not to assume
- A connection error is not automatically a defective PC or console.
- A clear platform status page is not proof that every Dead by Daylight match server is healthy.
- More advertised bandwidth is not a guaranteed cure for ping or packet loss.
- An Ethernet cable improves the test’s stability in many setups, but it cannot repair an outage or an ISP route.
- Changing NAT is not a universal latency solution.
- Turning off the firewall removes protection and is not the recommended fix.
