If a Crunchyroll episode will not start, keeps buffering, freezes, or shows a black screen, first check whether the problem affects one episode or every title, then try a refresh, a device restart, another network, and signing out and back in. These reversible checks help narrow down whether the issue is tied to the episode, your device or app, your connection, or your session. If they do not help, follow the troubleshooting steps for your platform and give Crunchyroll Support specific details about what you tested.
Work through one change at a time and retry the same episode after each step. That makes it easier to see what helped—and gives Support more useful information if playback still fails. The checks below apply whether you see an endless spinner, a black screen, repeated freezing, or a playback error.
First identify how much is affected
Before changing settings or reinstalling anything, note exactly what happens. An endless spinner, a black screen, playback that stops repeatedly, and an error message are different symptoms; write down the wording of any error rather than guessing what it means. Then check whether the problem is limited to one episode or affects other titles, and whether it happens on one device or several.

- One episode, one device: Try another episode on that same device. If other titles play, record the affected show and episode, including whether you selected a dub or subtitle version.
- Many episodes, one device: Try Crunchyroll on another device, if available. This helps establish whether the issue is limited to the original device, app, or browser.
- More than one device: Test another available network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. If the result changes, the connection or local network is worth investigating.
- One network versus another: Keep the device and episode the same while changing networks. Changing one factor at a time makes the result more useful.
These comparisons do not prove the cause on their own. They give you a more informative next step and, if necessary, a clearer report for support. For example, if the same episode fails in one browser but plays in another on the same computer and network, focus on the first browser. If several devices behave differently on Wi-Fi but work on mobile data, investigate the home connection before changing app settings.

- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Keep a short note of the time, device, title, and result of each test. Avoid changing the device, network, and episode together: if playback starts afterward, you will not know which change mattered. Also avoid signing in and out across several devices during the session check; test the affected device by itself.
Try the quick, reversible fixes first
- Close the video and reopen it. In a browser, refresh the episode page. In an app, close the video and reopen it.
- Restart the app or browser. Fully close it rather than leaving it in the background, then try the episode again.
- Restart the device. If playback still fails, restart the phone, computer, TV, streaming device, or console you are using.
- Test another network. If possible, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data or try another available connection. Keep the episode and device unchanged for a useful comparison.
- Sign out and sign back in on the affected device. Crunchyroll’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends this as a session check. Do this test on that device rather than signing in and out across several devices at once.
If playback returns, note which change made the difference. If it does not, continue with the section for your platform rather than repeating the same checks. A restart or sign-in refresh is a first-line check, not a reason to skip the more targeted browser, app, or connection steps when the problem returns.
Fix playback in a web browser
Browser playback can be affected by an outdated browser, stored site data, or an extension that interferes with the page. Work through these tests in order; after each one, reload the episode and check whether playback changes.
- Update your browser. Install available browser updates, then restart the browser. Crunchyroll Help’s browser troubleshooting article listed Chrome 117+, Firefox 117+, Edge 117+, and Safari 16.1+ as supported versions when it was retrieved on October 13, 2026. Browser support thresholds can change, so check Crunchyroll’s current browser support information rather than treating those figures as permanent requirements.
- Do a hard refresh. On a PC, press
Ctrl+F5. On a Mac, pressShift+Cmd+R. These commands reload the page rather than relying only on the current cached copy. - Restart the browser. Close the browser completely, reopen it, sign in if prompted, and try the episode again.
- Test a private or incognito window. If playback works there, an extension or stored browser data may be involved. Private mode is a diagnostic test, not proof of a particular cause.
- Temporarily disable extensions. Turn off extensions, including ad blockers, for the test, then reload the page. If playback starts, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify whether one affects the site.
- Clear cache and cookies for the browser, then sign in again. This removes stored site data, so expect to sign in again. Retry the affected episode after logging in.
- Try another browser. Keep the same device, network, and episode where possible. If it plays in another browser, focus subsequent troubleshooting on the original browser’s settings or stored data.
Crunchyroll Help’s browser quality guidance says VPN use is not supported. If you use a VPN, temporarily turn it off as a diagnostic step and retry; this does not establish that every playback problem is caused by a VPN.
Private mode and a second browser are useful comparisons because they help separate browser-specific trouble from a connection-wide issue. If the video plays in a private window, try disabling extensions first, then clear site data if needed. If it fails in both browsers but works on another network, return to the network checks rather than repeatedly clearing browser data.
Fix playback on a phone or tablet
On a mobile device, begin with the app and device before reinstalling. Reinstallation is more disruptive than closing and reopening the app, and it is best kept for cases where simpler steps have not worked.

- Force-close the Crunchyroll app and reopen it. Closing it fully clears its current running session; simply switching to another app may leave it open in the background.
- Restart the phone or tablet. After it starts again, reopen Crunchyroll and retry the same episode.
- Install available app and operating-system updates. Update the Crunchyroll app and the device’s operating system, then test playback again.
- Close other background apps. This is a useful check when playback is unstable on the device. Then retry without changing other factors.
- Try another network. Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data, if available. If playback changes, follow the network checks below.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN, if you use one. Crunchyroll’s iOS troubleshooting guidance says VPNs can affect speed, compatibility, or content availability. Use this only as a test, then restore your preferred setting if it makes no difference.
- Reinstall the app if the earlier steps fail. Remove the app, install it again, sign in, and test the affected episode.
If you need to contact support about an iOS problem, include the device model, iOS version, app version, region, affected show and episode, and whether you selected a dub or subtitle version. Include a screenshot of an error when one appears.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen testing a phone, keep the device and episode the same while switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If mobile data works but Wi-Fi does not, that points toward the local connection as the next area to check; it does not establish that the app itself is faulty. If both networks fail only in the app, make sure the app and operating system are current before reinstalling.
Fix playback on a smart TV or streaming device
- Close and reopen Crunchyroll. If the device allows you to fully quit the app, do so before reopening it.
- Restart the TV or streaming device. If a normal restart does not clear the problem, use a full power cycle: unplug the device briefly, reconnect it, and start it again.
- Install available system and app updates. Check for updates to the device software and the Crunchyroll app, then retry playback.
- Reinstall the Crunchyroll app if needed. Use this after the restart and update checks, then sign in and test the episode again.
Menu names and steps vary by device. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for its update, restart, and app-removal menus rather than assuming every TV or streaming device has the same controls.
If the TV app fails, compare it with Crunchyroll on another device using the same network. Playback on a phone or computer but not the TV narrows the next steps to the TV, streaming device, or its app. If both devices buffer on the same Wi-Fi, check the router and competing network activity before reinstalling apps on every device.
Fix playback on a console
- Restart the console and reopen Crunchyroll.
- Try a full power cycle if a normal restart does not help: shut the console down, unplug it briefly, reconnect it, and start it again.
- Use the console’s supported cache-clearing steps, if available. Menu paths differ by platform; follow the console maker’s instructions instead of deleting unfamiliar data.
- Reinstall the Crunchyroll app if playback still fails, then sign in and retry the episode.
Change one thing at a time where practical. If clearing cache or reinstalling is not an option on your console, continue with the network checks and record that limitation for support. A cache-clearing menu is not identical on every console, so do not remove unfamiliar saved data just to try an assumed fix.
Check whether the connection is causing buffering
Buffering can occur when a connection is unstable or when other activity is competing for network capacity. Compare another network first, then make small changes to your home connection and retest.

- Weatherproof & UV Resistant: Outdoor-rated Cat8 Ethernet cable with UV-resistant PVC jacket; withstands direct sunlight, extreme cold, humidity, and hot weather; anti-aging and durable; Includes 18-month support.
- Restart the router. Check that it has power and an internet connection, restart it, and wait for it to reconnect before testing the episode again.
- Reduce competing network activity. Pause large downloads and, if possible, reduce simultaneous video calls or streaming. Disconnect or pause activity on devices that do not need the connection during the test.
- Improve the Wi-Fi position. If you are using Wi-Fi, move closer to the router. A more central, open location for the router may also help the signal reach the device.
- Lower playback quality if that setting is available. Crunchyroll’s loading guidance suggests lowering playback quality when a connection is weak or inconsistent. Retry playback after changing the setting.
- Test Ethernet on a compatible computer, if practical. A wired connection can help determine whether Wi-Fi is contributing to the problem; it is an optional test, not a required purchase or a fix for account, app, episode, or service-side issues.
Change one network condition at a time and retry the same episode. If another network works while your usual Wi-Fi does not, that is useful evidence to include in a support request; it does not by itself identify a specific router fault.
For a fair comparison, avoid changing playback quality, moving the router, and pausing downloads all at once. Try pausing competing activity first, then test closer to the router, then use a wired connection if you already have a suitable setup. If lower quality helps, the connection may be struggling to deliver the selected stream consistently; it is still worth checking whether other devices are using the network heavily.
Start with the router you have rather than assuming it needs replacement. The basic checks are to confirm power and internet connectivity, restart it, improve its position, and reduce congestion. If those steps do not change the result, record whether other devices and networks work and share that with Support; replacing hardware is not a universal remedy for a particular episode or account problem.

Crunchyroll’s connectivity guidance includes DNS-change instructions for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS over Wi-Fi, Apple TV, Android TV, and Xbox. It names Cloudflare DNS and Google Public DNS addresses, but the guidance does not establish that changing DNS will fix every streaming problem.
Treat a DNS change as an advanced, optional diagnostic step after trying the app, device, and network checks above. Use the instructions for your exact device and connection type, and record the original setting before changing it so you can restore it if needed. Do not change DNS settings if you are unsure which connection they apply to. A DNS change cannot establish whether the underlying issue is an individual episode, an account session, an app, or a service-side problem.
Because DNS menus and connection settings vary by platform, use the device-specific instructions rather than applying steps meant for another device. If you are unsure how to restore the original setting, skip this step and include your other test results in a support request. DNS is not a substitute for checking that the app is current, testing a second network, or recording the exact error.

When to contact Crunchyroll Support
If playback still fails after the relevant checks, contact Crunchyroll Support with enough detail to distinguish a device, network, episode, or session issue. Avoid assigning a cause based only on an error code: Crunchyroll’s troubleshooting material does not provide a universal diagnosis for every code.
- The device type and model; for a computer, the browser name and version.
- The Crunchyroll app version and operating-system version, when applicable.
- Your country or region.
- The affected show and episode, including dub or subtitle details if relevant.
- Whether one episode or all titles are affected, and whether other devices have the same problem.
- Whether playback changes on another network.
- The steps you have already tried and what happened after each useful test.
- The exact error text or code, or a screenshot if an error appears.
- A precise symptom description, such as an endless spinner, black screen, repeated freezing, or failure to start.
Crunchyroll Help asks for device, region, issue scope, symptom, and error details when investigating playback reports. For iOS reports, its guidance also calls for the device model, iOS and app versions, affected shows, and an error screenshot where available.
A concise report can say: “On [device and app/browser version] in [region], [show and episode] shows [exact symptom]. Other episodes [do/do not] play. I tested [second device/network] with [result], and tried [steps]. The error says [exact wording].” Include a screenshot if the screen displays an error, but do not interpret the code for Support. This format gives them the comparison results as well as the symptom.
If only one title or episode fails after you have tested other titles on the same device, call that out clearly. If several devices fail only on one network, say so. Those scope details are more useful than a list of fixes without their results, and help avoid repeating tests you have already completed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t Crunchyroll play an episode?
Start by testing another episode on the same device, then refresh or reopen the video and restart the app or browser. If only one episode fails, note the show, episode, and dub or subtitle version. If all titles fail on one device, try the platform-specific steps and another network.

Why does Crunchyroll keep buffering?
Buffering can be related to an unstable or congested connection. Test another network, pause large downloads or other demanding activity, move closer to Wi-Fi, restart the router, and lower playback quality if the setting is available. On a compatible computer, Ethernet can be an optional comparison with Wi-Fi.

What should I do if Crunchyroll shows a black screen or endless spinner?
Record whether it happens on one episode or all titles, then close and reopen the video, refresh the page or app, and restart the device. If the problem continues, follow the steps for your browser, phone, TV, streaming device, or console and save the exact error text if one appears.
Should I turn off my VPN to fix Crunchyroll?
Temporarily turning it off can be a useful diagnostic test. Crunchyroll Help says VPN use is not supported in its browser quality guidance; its iOS guidance also notes a VPN can affect speed, compatibility, or content availability. A VPN is not necessarily the cause of every playback issue.
Will changing DNS fix Crunchyroll buffering?
Not necessarily. Crunchyroll provides DNS-change instructions for several platforms, but a DNS change is an advanced, optional step and is not guaranteed to fix buffering or other playback problems. Try app, device, and network checks first, and record the original DNS setting before changing it.
What information should I send Crunchyroll Support?
Include your device and model, app or browser and operating-system versions, country or region, affected show and episode, whether other titles, devices, or networks work, steps already tried, and the exact error message or a screenshot. Avoid guessing what an error code means.
The Bottom Line
Start with the smallest comparisons: test another episode, refresh or restart the affected app or device, try another network, and sign out and back in on that device. Then use the steps for your platform and check for network congestion if buffering continues. Keep notes of what changes the result; if playback still fails, send Crunchyroll Support the exact symptom, device and version details, affected episode, network comparisons, and any error text or screenshot.
