Fix a struggling free-to-play Steam RPG in diagnosis order: identify when the problem occurs, compare your PC with the game’s requirements, close competing software, update Windows and drivers, verify the installation, then tune graphics one change at a time. This sequence separates damaged files and software conflicts from genuine hardware limits, and it gives you evidence before you reinstall or buy an upgrade.
Do not assume that one symptom has one cause. A crash during startup, shader-compilation hitching when entering a new area, and continuously low frame rates need different remedies. Retest the exact scenario after every change so you know which action helped.
Start with a reproducible diagnosis
Write down the trigger before changing anything. Record whether the game fails at launch, while loading a save, when entering a particular area, during combat, after playing for a set time, or only after a recent patch. For performance problems, note whether the issue is a brief hitch, repeated frame-time spikes, or a low frame rate that remains steady.
- Record the game version, Windows version, graphics-driver version, display resolution, refresh rate, and whether the game uses an integrated or dedicated GPU.
- Note what changed immediately before the problem: a game update, driver installation, graphics preset, mod, overlay, new monitor, or hardware change.
- Use the same save, location, camera angle, and action for each retest. A different scene can make an apparent improvement or regression meaningless.
A diagnosis-first approach is important because Steam notes that the wide variation in PC hardware and software makes many crashes configuration-specific. A single failed launch does not prove that the installation is corrupt, and a low average FPS does not prove that a new graphics card is required.

Check requirements and basic system health
Open the RPG’s Steam store page and compare both the minimum and recommended requirements with your PC. Meeting minimum requirements means the game may run; it does not promise high FPS or smooth frame pacing. Recommended requirements are also not a guarantee at every resolution, preset, or effect level.
What to compare

Before buying hardware, watch RAM usage, GPU utilization, temperatures and storage health while reproducing the problem. A graphics-card, RAM, SSD or cooling upgrade is justified only when the corresponding resource is demonstrably the bottleneck.
Fix crashes in the least destructive order
1. Restart and test a clean background
Exit the game and Steam, restart Windows, and try the same reproduction steps with nonessential applications closed. Disable overlays, recording tools, performance monitors and chat overlays temporarily. These programs can hook into rendering or input and create conflicts, while startup applications consume memory that the game needs.

Do not change several unrelated settings during this test. If the crash disappears, re-enable background programs one at a time until the conflicting program is identified. Keep essential security software enabled; the goal is a clean diagnostic test, not permanent protection changes.

- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the RPG and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then launch the game and repeat the documented reproduction.
A small number of files can still be reported as failing verification. Steam explains that local configuration files may be excluded from the check, so that message is not automatically evidence of a continuing installation failure. If Steam downloads replacements, allow the operation to complete before testing.
3. Update Windows and device drivers
Install pending Windows updates, then obtain current drivers for the CPU platform, graphics adapter and audio device from the appropriate hardware manufacturer or computer maker. Capcom’s Steam crash guidance also recommends current Windows and video drivers. Restart after installation, even when the installer does not insist on it.

If a new driver is the point at which the problem began, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback option or reinstall the previous stable package rather than repeatedly layering drivers over one another.
4. Undo recent graphics changes
If the crash began after changing resolution, HDR, ray-traced effects, shader quality or another video option, lower the settings and test. Start with a conservative preset and restore options gradually. This is reversible and safer than immediately deleting configuration files.
Some games document damaged shader-cache files as a cause of graphical problems. Capcom identifies shader-cache damage as one possible cause and provides game-specific directions where applicable. Only clear or rebuild a cache when the game publisher or GPU vendor documents the location and procedure for that title. Deleting arbitrary cache folders can remove useful data or create longer compilation stutters.

5. Capture evidence before reinstalling
When the crash persists, collect diagnostics while the failure is still reproducible. Windows Event Viewer may identify a faulting module. A DxDiag report records hardware, Windows and driver details. Larian asks players with persistent crashes for this type of information, because it lets support distinguish a game fault from a driver, component or operating-system failure.

- Include the exact action that triggers the crash and whether it occurs every time.
- Keep the game version, Windows version and graphics-driver version with the report.
- Save any in-game crash report and note the Event Viewer faulting module, if one appears.
- Do not claim success until the same save, area or combat sequence works repeatedly after the change.
Separate stuttering from consistently low FPS
Stuttering is a frame-pacing problem: the average FPS can look acceptable while individual frames arrive in bursts. Low FPS is a sustained throughput problem. The distinction determines which setting or resource to investigate.
Shader-compilation stutter
Hitches clustered immediately after an update or when entering unfamiliar areas can be shader compilation. They may lessen after the game has visited the affected scenes. Keep the game and driver current, and follow only documented shader-cache rebuild instructions. Do not repeatedly clear caches as a general-purpose fix; that can force compilation again and make the first runs worse.
Memory and background-application stutter
Close unnecessary startup and background programs, especially browsers with many tabs, launchers, video capture tools and other games. Steam explains that insufficient RAM can make Windows swap data to disk, which appears as repeated hitches and noticeable FPS loss. Check memory use during the hitch rather than relying on total installed RAM alone.
Unstable frame pacing on high-refresh displays
If the monitor runs above 60 Hz and frame delivery is erratic, test a sensible in-game FPS cap. Larian recommends a 60 FPS cap during crash troubleshooting when a monitor is above 60 Hz; the same cap can also make frame pacing easier to evaluate. Compare capped and uncapped results using the same scene, and keep the option that produces steadier delivery without unacceptable input latency.

Raise FPS by changing the settings that cost the most
Change one group at a time, record the result, and restore any option that has little effect. Exact gains depend on the game, resolution and hardware, so a setting that is expensive on one PC may be nearly free on another.

Integrated-graphics systems should first try low shader detail and windowed mode, as Steam recommends for this class of hardware. If the game becomes smooth at a lower render resolution but the GPU remains fully utilized, resolution or other GPU-heavy effects are likely the limit. If the GPU is lightly used while one or more CPU cores are busy, reducing shadows or view distance may help less than lowering simulation-heavy options, if the game exposes them.

RAM and storage
Monitor RAM use while loading a crowded area or entering combat. Swapping to disk can explain pauses even when average FPS appears acceptable. Keep adequate free space on the installation drive and investigate health warnings before moving the game or replacing components. A slow or failing drive can affect loading and in-game streaming, but an SSD alone will not cure a GPU-limited frame rate.
GPU utilization and temperatures
High, steady GPU utilization with low FPS usually indicates that the selected resolution or effects exceed the GPU’s practical capacity. Lower resolution scale, shadows, reflections, volumetrics or shader detail and test again. Sudden clock reductions, very high temperatures or shutdowns point toward cooling, power or hardware problems rather than a game setting.

A low overall CPU percentage can hide one saturated core. If frame rate falls in busy towns or combat while the GPU is not fully occupied, the processor or game simulation may be limiting minimum FPS. Lowering resolution may then have little effect. Close background CPU workloads and compare a less crowded scene before deciding that an upgrade is necessary.

Use a controlled troubleshooting matrix
When two possible fixes compete, choose the one that produces stronger evidence with less risk.

When to escalate to the publisher
Contact the game publisher when the crash remains reproducible after clean-background testing, file verification, Windows updates, driver updates and conservative graphics settings. Steam notes that some crashes are client or game defects that require a developer update rather than a local repair.
Send a concise support report containing:
- Game version and platform (Steam).
- Windows version/build and CPU, GPU, RAM and storage details.
- Graphics-driver and audio-driver versions.
- Exact reproduction steps, including the save, area or menu involved.
- Whether the issue occurs every time and whether other games are affected.
- Event Viewer’s faulting module, any crash report, and the DxDiag report.
- Changes already tested and the result of each retest.
For suspected hardware faults, repeated thermal shutdowns, visual artifacting across multiple games or drive-health warnings, use a qualified PC technician. Those symptoms require component-level diagnosis and should not be treated as an RPG configuration problem.
A practical order of operations
- Record the trigger and a repeatable test scenario.
- Check the Steam minimum and recommended requirements.
- Restart Steam and Windows; close overlays and nonessential background programs.
- Verify files through Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Install Windows, CPU-platform, GPU and audio-driver updates, then restart.
- Undo recent graphics changes and use a conservative preset.
- Test documented shader-cache repairs only when the publisher or GPU vendor provides the procedure.
- Measure RAM, GPU utilization, temperatures and drive health while reproducing the issue.
- Change one performance setting at a time; test a frame cap if pacing is unstable.
- Capture Event Viewer, crash-report and DxDiag evidence before reinstalling or escalating.
The Bottom Line
The safest fix is a measured sequence: reproduce the failure, remove background conflicts, verify Steam files, update Windows and drivers, tune the setting tied to the measured bottleneck, and document persistent crashes for the publisher. Upgrade hardware only when utilization, memory, temperatures or storage checks show that software changes cannot address the limit.
